      I'm excited but anxious in the same time as I really didn't like 1770s. In my opinion it wasn't an upgrade over 770s plus they were overpriced. I hope 700X are better and worth the price if not I'm going back to 770s.

    Those pads are everything! Btw, would the headband take to a slight bending to adjust clamping force higher or lower if need be or is the surround still too plasticky to do without cracking easily? Great to see you back!

    • @WheezyTech
      @WheezyTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've been flexing them trying to get the headband to give a little. I had a look under the padding and its the same old spring steel design encased in the rubberised coating. The coating seems to be really flexible so doesn't look like there will be any issues with cracking.

  • @MichaelW.1980
    @MichaelW.1980 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey there! Thank you so much for this video! I ordered myself the DT 700 PRO X on Friday. Your video was among the videos I watched before considering it. This will be a switch to a pair of closed back headphones once more, after using the AKG K712 Pro headphones for five years, which actually was an open back pair of headphones. But in my time, I have been using preferably closed back headphones. Originating with the rather simple Sennheiser PC 151 and PC 161 headsets, being primarily a gamer back then, I have a history with Beyerdynamic. The 80 ohm MMX 300 Headset, which pretty much is a DT 770 Pro with a microphone attached was my entry to actual headphones. I got these, because listening to music became more and more important to me. I gave the Denon AH-D 1100 a go, but those were really poorly built, and showed signs of breaking, so I sent them back early, getting a refund. This experience made having a durable pair important to me or let’s say it made me focus on it more.Later, in 2014, I did, what I hoped to be a major upgrade and got a T70P pair of headphones. As we all can tell nowadays, these never got a fan base and was discontinued and honestly, I feel like I know why. As my pair got a broken cable within the warranty, I was able to send them back and get a refund. Luckily this time, I must say, because I didn’t particularly liked them for the price I paid. So the AKG K712 Pro were my venture into open back headphones, but while in 5 years of usage for listening to music I actually liked them, recording and live streaming became a thing in 2018. And for that these were never really ideal, because of possible bleed issues. Also, some parts of the K712 Pro aren’t repairable and broke on me. They are still working fine, nevertheless, but I wonder, for how long. I did order the DT 700 PRO X for being a replace everything pair of headphones. I know Beyerdynamic sells replacements for almost everything on the the DT 770 Pros, but replacing the cables would require soldering, which I’m not comfortable with. I expect the DT700 PRO X to be slightly different sounding, but my main focus is on the possibility to replace pretty much everything later on. That being said, I *HOPE*, I will be. While replacing the cable is possible today, with the parts listed on the website, any padding - or additional parts - are not listed at the time I write this comment. Since Beyerdynamic advertises this even with a manual of how to replace certain parts, I decided for the DT 700 PRO X, especially since I have a history of bad luck with breaking cables, which was why I didn’t like to get the DT 770 Pro. I want to be able to repair them, rather than replacing them, because the pads *will* and the cable *might* need replacing down the line. The rest looks like it could be built to last. Time will tell. For now, one thing to mention is: the adapter for the plug has a really unusual threading and I didn’t find a replacement for it, aside from getting a replacement cable + the plug, which is rather expensive. With your testimony on the headband casing, I hope it will be replaceable down the line. Again, time will tell.

    Thanks for the review, helps a lot. I'm going to bet those earpads are not memory foam by the way they react (seeing them in your video). Memory foam is somewhat squishy, and it take a couple seconds to return to its normal position. Where as the usual medium density foam returns to position almost instantly. I'm really not saying either one is preferred, just personal taste, and memory foam costs more. If you have a set of the Philips Fidelio X2 or X2HR they have memory foam and you can tell when you squeeze it. So a bit less treble than the 770's? Would you go as far and say like the infamous Sennheiser veil?

    • @WheezyTech
      @WheezyTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right they are not memory foam. At first glance they looked like they should be but this was my raw first impressions. Its actually really sad that they aren't memory foam because it does have an impact on the comfort.

  • @yabadabauk
    @yabadabauk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Nice casual chat...thanks. I love the 990 and 770's and have the 250 ohm and 600 ohm of the former and 80 ohm of the latter. I've just ordered the 900 Pro X as just can't resist trying them out. Like you, I actually get on fine with the treble peak on the 990 and 770, especially when it eases off after the pads flatten a little and also when my brain has accustomed to it after listening to more veiled headphones. I don't EQ any longer, but if I did I'd probably still drop the 990's down a tad somewhere in the treble frequencies, so I'm hoping that the 900 Pro X give me that slight reduction, but not too far. Also, hope the bass quantity is about the same.
    As regards the comfort of these new models, you might find that the pads soften a bit and therefore clamping force also eases a bit, after a little use. Now looking forward to your 900 Pro X review!

      Yeah they are replaceable. The pads aren't showing on the Beyer site just yet but should be on there soon. They are held in with a retention ring which may limit you using third party replacements but I would usually advise against that, most headphones sound best with original pads. With that said Dekoni have already said they will produce a pair with the retention ring for these headphones.

    I just bought the DT 770 Pro 80 Ohms and I absolutely love them. I enjoy the so-called "Mt. 19:10 "the only negative i could see"
    didn't get one in my hands yet, still waiting for more reviews, but i can already see more than one:
    - heavier (more in the cosmetic way than the sturdy way unfortunately)
    - huge price increase (you're better off with a dt770 and a cable mod)
    - new pad system with plastic ring (probably more fragile and not compatible with third party pads like the dekonis or else you already own)
    - new headband clipped in plastic (probaly more fragile than the old headband with metal clips)
    - only one impedance available (as opposed to 3 with the dt770)
    now for the build quality, i'd like to dismantle one and see if they made the same mistake with the metal screws in plastic threads. had this problem with the dt1990 even though almost every youtuber claimed it was "build like a tank" without ever dismantle one to prove it.
    i own the akg371 and it is still going well, the dt1990 supposedly tougher failed first. the dt770 and dt990pro still going well after all these years.
    so i wonder if these new dt1xx0 and dtx00 series build quality will be able to last as long, guess we'll know in 20 years.
    for now all i see is increased cosmetics, weight and price.
    i wonder how the new 48 ohm stellar drivers slam compared to the teslas?
    keep in mind that for the same price you could have both dt770 and akg371, so it's gotta be a huge sound improvement for this much money.
    waiting for your full review with sound, hope you'll compare it with dt770 and akg371.

      @WheezyTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      RE the negatives, this was just a first impressions off the top of my head, there's a few things I didn't mention that I'll be covering in the full review.
      Which part of your 1990 broke? They really are built like tanks, but no headphone is indestructible, I'd trust any Beyerdynamic, or Sennheiser for that matter, to be in one piece long after many other brands have fallen apart. The important thing with Beyerdynamic and Sennheiser is that replacement parts are readily available from headphones spares stockists, even from Amazon. They are designed to not only be tough, but most importantly, be easily repairable.

    • @testek3053
      @testek3053 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WheezyTech the weak point of the DT1XX0 series is the new yoke locks design that can't handle the strain from both the yokes and heavier headband with thin plastic cover and threads.
      it got loose on mine, see this part of the teardown: th-cam.com/video/D84OJF1fEYc/w-d-xo.html
      it cracked on this other one: th-cam.com/video/1-XpM1gS8EY/w-d-xo.html
      this guy explains the problem and says in his review "that crack is quite common". and i bet it will be even more common after all owners have them used for a few years.
      my first beyer was a DT770PRO, still working after 20 years (only had to change pads and cable, went for xlr). very sturdy. took a lot of abuse, but the yoke locks on the old design never failed on me... no wonder: it was lighter, thinner metal frame, and no extra strain from adding heavier headband extra pressure on it with the same "only 2 small screws in plastic threads" design!
      so, easily repairable is one thing, lack of sturdiness because of design flaw is another. when you put more strain and pressure with heavier parts on the same thin plastic part and threads, the failing rate will unavoidably increase.
      this new design is not built like a tank anymore, unless tanks nowadays have plastic threads for the wheels but it's ok because the army has spare parts when it fails.
      beyer should have gone (at least) for female metal threads inserts and thicker plastic on the yoke locks to handle the new added strain from bigger frame and heavier headband. they went for fake metal cups covers, fake leather stitches and shiny fake mesh instead.
      fun fact: i was a little concerned when i saw your honest review about AKG K371 bad build quality. eventually they said they'll check qc, so i took a chance and bought one to see by myself... well, this little guy is still going strong with everyday use and travel for now. at the same time my DT1990PRO kept safe in studio and praised by almost all youtubers to be "build like a tank" failed after less than a year. pretty ironic.

    • @WheezyTech
      @WheezyTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That fault is not unheard of on the older models either, its usually the first thing to go. The older models are also metal screws in plastic. But I get your point, I think its the increased clamping force versus older models which is causing extra strain.
      As far as I'm concerned I still think they are very well built. I've had my 1990 for around 4 years and there are no issues with any Beyer I've ever owned. Anecdotal of course. But I do want to reiterate its not just the design but the high availability of replacement parts and reparability of these designs that is the real winner in my book and I think that more than makes up for any perceived weaknesses in the design.
      It could be argued that Sennheiser's designs such as their 500 and 600 series are better, they also provide readily available replacement parts and are designed to be repairable. Although many would knock them for being almost entirely made of plastic.
      As always its going to come down to whatever you feel comfortable with so its fair criticism.

    • @testek3053
      @testek3053 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WheezyTech you're right, the older models were plastic threads too. i've seen some pictures of broken ones and even 3d printed spare parts.
      - but out of the countless reviews, how many mentionned this fact, compared to all the ones jumping the "build like a tank" hype train?
      - the yoke lock hinge being the most critical part, knowing that point of failure when upgrading to new design bulkier, heavier, wider (and 3 times more expensive btw) why not upgrade with metal inserts female theads? this is a question i wish some big reviewer asked to beyer themselves. none of them does.
      your example is interesting: they are well built if you compare them with sennheisers (and other brands mostly made of plastic). what if you compare them with a real mostly metal build with all parts available worldwide? ollo cans are mostly made of metal. the yoke hinge (the most critical part) is made of metal! check their spare parts page (available from the main menu btw), everything is on sale, even the screws! and the best part is the company asks their consumers what changes they want when they upgrade the design.
      if a new and small company like this can do it, why wouldn't big old beyer?
      i have a doubt about "high availability of replacement parts" from beyer since i read comments about how the parts shop is not available on their site outside of germany and france, and how hard it is to order parts from the states. i'd like to see one reviewer outside of eu actually try this and testify from real experience. none of them did.
      not everyone feels like it is fair criticism: in fact i get some hate from fanboys and i see my comments disappear from a lot of headphones youtube reviewers who sound more like hype salemans than honest critical reviewers. i gotta thank you for this.
      one could think this is me bashing beyer when it's not: i've been using their cans for years, but i think they could do better.
      shoutout to this guy from "no theme reviews" channel because he's one of the rare reviewers that always speaks the truth about weaknesses and defaults, and the only one to always consider the value factor (price vs performance and sturdiness) for each product.
      and i think consumers deserve the truth when they spent their hard earned money after watching a review from a youtuber they trust.

    • @WheezyTech
      @WheezyTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@testek3053 Even if they reinforced the thread with metal, that would still be encased in plastic and prone to cracking. Perhaps if they had made the whole slider from metal but that would add cost and weight. Its all a balance when in reality the incidences of cracking are low compared to shipped units, easy to just provide replacements should they break. And my argument is that by making parts available you never need to retire a headphone after a failure unlike some headphones in the cheaper price brackets and even some more expensive ones from other companies have some crazy design choices. Although I do agree that it is a lot less forgivable on a £400 headphone like the 1990 versus a ~£100 headphone like the 770.
      On that note Beyerdynamic have stopped shipping to the UK due to Brexit, but its kind of moot as all headphones and parts are available from UK stockists anyway, even Amazon in some cases.
      Props to Ollo tho, that's really good to see. I've wanted to try their headphones for a while now.
      Reviewers don't tend to mention it cos its a small problem. Beyerdynamic are well known for lasting many years with the only needed replacements being the headband padding and the earpads. They have a reputation that has been built up over decades and comes from the experience that they actually do last. Most reviewers, most users in fact, will never have a problem. And of course those who do post online complaining of issues are a self selecting group.
      I'm not saying Beyer could not improve the design in some areas of course. But on the "built like a tank" mantra. A tank is more durable than a car, but they still get destroyed on a battlefield. The DT770 as a "monitoring" headphone is constructed in an incredibly more tough way than the MDR7506 for example, but I'm sure you could break the 770 if you wanted to. Its all relative.
      To finish, it does look like Beyerdynamic have sought to address this with the 700/900 Pro X as the adjuster unit seems to have been completely redesigned. Obviously time will tell how durable it turns out to be.
