Being Goth Without Dressing Goth?!

  • Please let me know what you think down in the comments! Id love to hear your views on this as it seems that everyone has a slightly different opinion on the subject! By the way Im not ignoring how important fashion is in the subculture as it obviously is a huge part of it. Its just that I think sometimes people feel pressure to look a certain way to be accepted as goth, and I dont think it should be like that. x

    Goth is your mindset, and your interests. The clothes happen to express that.
    I hate it when elitist arseholes pick on fellow goth's clothes, or lack off you could say, as a way to shun others out of the culture.

      People do this in any sort of style or whatever. I like pop punk music and usually dress kind of punk/grungy...But then I like being totally girly (like in my photo). It's so annoying when people judge you for not being stereotypical. Hope that makes sense...

      +Bethany Francia Yup I agree, the metalheads do the same because you don't happen to be looking 'metal as fuck' one day. I wear whatever I like.

      ^ ikr. Why do you have to dress a certain way? It's not like that justifies the fact that you like the band or whatever. I don't own a lot of band tees but that doesn't mean I don't like them. I just don't have money to spend on clothing.

    I am a goth but now I am 50 plus the fashion isnt as important to me as the lifestyle. I LOVE everything goth and probably was born this way. My daughter is so similar and unlike my parents I will encourage her to express her love rather than hinder it

    I identify myself as Goth and also love to wear black clothes, but I simply cannot pull off the makeup. Being an introvert, I even hate the thought of attracting that kind of attention. Being a guy doesnt make it easier either. :-/ So I've made peace with that fact and express myself in other ways, such as art and music. :-D

      You don't have to buy goth brands. There are sometimes some gothy things from normal shops too. For example I have bought a lovely black lace top at sale for maybe around 13 € at sale this year.

    • @GothicRockGoddess
      @GothicRockGoddess 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, Ebay is your friend! Second hand clothes on there go for peanuts and you're bound to find some really unusual things, especially if you don't specifically search for the term 'goth' or 'gothic'. Have a look at the expensive sites, then use the descriptions of the things you like as keywords to search for similar items in the 'auction' category on Ebay. You'll find loads of stuff that way. :-)

      I agree with Only Babs. Be creative, mix your outfits yourself by finding individual pieces that are nice (and don't cost a leg). Also stop worrying whether or not something is (uber) goth. Just buy what you like and what makes you feel comfortable (it shows when you wear stuff that you aren't comfortable with).
      I always recommend staying far away from "alternative fashion" brands and shops. The pieces they sell are usually very cheap quality, expensive and more geared towards the whole mallgoth/Hottopic/Emo/Scene look kinda thing. Even the stuff that ia marketed towards Romantics, Cybers or Rivetheads is rather meh in my opinion (not everyone can pull off a corset or latex suit. And it may look tacky as hell). Instead try to find your own stlye. Make stuff yourself for example or customize.

    all throughout high school i did not dress goth at all, yet i was still labelled and identified as one because my music taste was all goth music. I still don't dress traditionally gothy, and tbh I don't think your outward appearance matters when you enjoy the subculture. But I add gothy elements to my wardrobe all the time because i like mixing styles to create my own style.

    I love goth and punk music and goth literature. I like spooky morbid things. I get goth joke. I own some goth pieces and would like to buy more but I also like getting naturally tan in the summer and wearing colors. I consider myself goth. Kudos to you for not being an elitist! Goth is all about getting to be yourself and you shouldn't face discrimination within the subculture.

    Very well said. I'm a very lazy Goth LOL. I prefer looking at others in their finery to being in it. Even when I do dress up and deign to put on any makeup, it tends to be very minimalist and conservative.

  • @lestranged
    @lestranged 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I'm too old now to worry about fitting into any subculture, I dress up more for shows, but for day to day I look pretty normal/lazy/comfortable. I was a teen when the gothic and punk style first began,(and I loved them) but even back then I could never fully commit to any single subculture because my musical and fashion tastes were so eclectic. I might dress punk one day and mod the next, I liked vintage cocktail dresses (50's and early 60's), I just didn't want to fit myself into a small rigid box.
    I liked a lot of things, but I didn't hate the things I was supposed to hate. Years later it turned out that many punk musicians also had more diverse tastes and influences. Like early punk was very anti-hippie and anti-disco when it first started, and at the time, country music was something every "alternative" person said they hated. Punk was pretty much "anti" everything, except for punk. It defined itself more by what it was against, than what it was for.
    But then later, artists like Elvis Costello did a country album and an album of grateful dead songs. Members of X formed the Knitters and did a lot of country/folk songs with a punk edge. Blondie did disco songs and rap songs. There is a lot more room now for eclectic tastes and hybrid styles of music and fashion. Almost any two styles can be combined, even ones that were mortal enemies when they started. Like punks used to HATE hippies, but now hippie/punks are an easily recognizable style. Goth has so many variants and crossover styles, there is more room for individuality now I think.

  • @KillerQueen_87
    @KillerQueen_87 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yes! This is so true!
    I have identified as goth for about 10 years now, not always dressing that way or doing my make-up that way because of school or work or other circumstances, but it's always been who I am inside. Problem is that I find it hard to approach other goths when I'm not "obviously" goth, because I'm afraid that they won't accept me/see me as goth.

    amazing video.
    For me is all about the music and the spirit too.
    Don't need to wear new rock shoes and punk rave clothes to be goth.
    But there is a thing I hate : when I'm dress in black, a very simple style, people say "look at her, she is emo " OMG I have nothing against emos but I hate people who think that I am that.
    People are so stupid in france..

    I really needed this video because I wanted to ask you for advice and I found it fitting that you posted this a week ago haha. Organizing my closet, I found a bunch of clothes I really like that are colorful and don't fit the "goth look" but I feel like I'm losing my identity as a goth because I still want to wear them. I'm totally open to accessorizing them in a way that would bring it back more to my dark side but I have no clue how, especially with a pastel mint summer dress. Lately I've been struggling a lot with my identity as a goth because, though I've identified with it for the last few years, I don't feel like I've been as immersed into the music as I'd like (I don't know how, I don't have the money to buy things to my leisure and Pandora and Spotify aren't exactly the best) and I look less and less goth and have no clue how to bring it back, not to mention how isolated I am from the gothic scene. Any help or advice would be extremely appreciated.

    I love this SO much. I've always identified as goth, even had an embarrassing time in highschool when I tried to dress how i felt but I just couldn't do it right. At the time my mom wasn't too pleased about it. But now, the only reason I can't dress how I feel is because I'm flat broke. I've always felt goth on the inside but I just don't have the means to express that. I appreciate this video a lot. Thank you for touching base on this. I don't see this on youtube so I am so stoked you shared your views on it.

    #StoryOfMyLife my personal fashion sense as a teenager always was a Dark/Scene/Gothic one. My cloths were usually black all the time and I wore a lot of chains. I was more or so a Metal head. This Video mentions reasons for being unable to fulfill the Goth look entirely; I agree with the reasons due to experience; continuing, I never got the chance to absorb myself into the scene completely, primarily for the reason that it was difficult for someone living in a Christian household, secondarily living in poverty(inability to afford goth wardrobe), and lastly not meeting the conventional standard of racial color to smoothly fit in. (I'm really Tan&My hair is impossible to manage). Not knowing where to start is a good one too. However, I listen to the Goth music genres a lot. Goth music is some of my favorite music to listen to. I listen to everything Goth in spite of my limitations. Some day I'll be able to fulfill my longing to become entirely absorbed into the scene. When the time is right..

    I am 100% a goth but I I don’t dress overtly goth at all. I’ve heard people like me called a “naked goth,” which I like. I love the music always have since I was a child, I love dark aesthetic, the energy of gothicness itself, I love dark shit in general...in my sexuality and my interests-macabre, vampiric, etc. and I also practice witchcraft, which is actually generational for me. So, for sure one can be a goth without looking goth. It’s an inside job~a soul feeling🖤🙂.

Most people around me feel a little bit intimidated when I wear Goth all the time. Wardrobe wise... I've been uploading my wardrobe in the past years at a slow rate. Nowadays, every time I need to buy clothes I buy them in one of three colours: black, white or various shades of purple/violet. Other than that, just jeans fabric.

But i still got the ghoulish humor,macbre literature,and expresion and infatuation with death and music..but i think its more how i live that defines me not by clothes so to speak if that makes sense...its more of spiritual feeling then a just putting on some trendy overly expense hot topic vampire freaks clothes and calling it a day so to speak...

    Although the whole Goth attire is awesome on others,
    For me, the furthest I'd ever go is black clothing.
    But in a way, I do feel like I am a Goth.
    The fact that dark stuff interests me, and when researching Goth, literally anything related has been interesting to me.

    I am very interested in the goth subculture and music, I think my personality and interests are very much in tune with it but.... I hate the idea of limiting my wardrobe to black and I don't like heavy makeup on me either. I definitely have somedays when I look "goth" but definitely not most of the time. I also dress grunge and tomboy and just very girly, I want to look different every day. But inside I guess I'm more goth than anything else

    You look amazing in your makeup! I’ve always wanted to try goth makeup but am too nervous to. Does the white foundation feel good on your face when applied? I’ve heard it does and to me the whiter the better.

    This really helped me. I call myself goth, but most people including my sister won't believe me because I dont have colorful hair or wear dark makeup. I listen to emocore and metal core bands, and I wear skinny jeans and have a small selection of band tees (not enough money..), but I'm just not into makeup and my hair is thick and dark brown and my mom says its in no condition to bleach and dye. I guess its about sharing a common interest and not how you look.

    Ah I've always thought about that because I don't have much money for Gothic clothes even if I love them. I love the music, culture all same stuff. But I am also scared because I've heard my parents talking about shit of Gothic style for example my dad making fun of one. Like how they looked.
    Hopefully later I can finally impress myself better

    Of course goth is primarily a state of mind - all true goths are goth at heart first and foremost. As a 51 year old guy, I don't wear makeup and I sport a .5 haircut. But I wear my Demonias to work, lots of retro silver and primarily black clothes. I'm lucky that I work in an environment where I can wear what I like. Great video Snowy.

    I've always been called a Goth because of my taste in music, I absolutely love Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Sisters Of Mercy etc etc, plus I've always had very pale skin and I tend to wear mostly black. I'm also drawn to Goths. But for me personally I would just say I'm alternative, as I love to wear neon colours, as well as black, I love vibrant colourful hair as well as black, futuristic fashions, such as Cyberdog, Cybergoth. I also really love Industrial and EBM music, like Combichrist, Solar Fake, Aesthetic Perfection. My list goes on, there is so much I love in the Alternative scene :D I love some girly things too. I really love the style of your bedroom, that lilac colour is beautiful

      Some people say the cure is a goth band...som people say the cure is a punk band. We have to invent an own genre just for the cure because no existing genre describes them properly :d

      By the way..one of my friends called them a ELECTRO POP band....shame on her for saying this!!!

    • @MysteriousAsteria
      @MysteriousAsteria 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Cure's Pornography album was definitely Gothic Rock, regardless what people say. It's just that the majority of their Discography doesn't fall into the genre. Especially the albums that made them famous and accepted in the mainstream music scene were more pop rock than anything. But it's undoubted that their early material was Post-Punk and therefore had a huge influence.
      And in my opinion Depeche Mode were indeed a Synth/Electro Pop band. Again, they had one album that can be classified as Darkwave, but the majority of their work isn't. To make things more complicated: before the whole goth label was put on the dark cloaked individuals of the New Wave scene, those "Goths" used to be in the same group as New Wavers and Punks. So in that context "Goths" listened to Depeche Mode.
      Which ultimately is the reason why I am becoming more and more sceptic of the whole "I am so GOTH" labeling thing. It is a legit musical genre though, but the subculture's history is quite the mess

    I really want to start to dress goth. I'm just really scared of what my mom will think. She says she's perfectly fine with it but sometimes she makes little comments like "why are you wearing a lot of makeup when we are just going to the store/movies/ect" do you have any advice on this? Also do you have any advice on wear I can get gothic looking clothes for pretty cheap?

  • @thewitchykitten2705

    I have a buddy who always says that you aren't goth if you don't listen to goth music. Which I get. But I disagree a bit. It has evolved into a fashion scene, not just music. Shit changes over time, so do fads, but he's hardcore always going to say "No, you are not goth" if you don't listen to goth bands.
    Anyways, my reason for not dressing up for the longest time was due to weighing so much. Now I've lost almost 50 pounds, so I was forced to get rid of most of my clothes AND I didn't like my clothes anyways. It was all frumpy stuff because I felt ugly and didn't care. Now I care. 95% of my wardrobe is black and beautiful clothing that makes me happy ♥

    I identify as goth and even declare it in my videos, even though I don't always don the all-black-with-lots-of-black-make-up-and-wild-black-hair uniform... I don't give a crap who doesn't like it. We all have free will and can't be the most groomed version of ourselves all the time. And yes, dressing goth CAN be expensive. LOL The other day at work, I wanted to be comfortable in the hot weather, so I wore a plain black tank top, blue jeans, running shoes and I used a rolled up bandana to hold my hair back... No makeup, no jewelry. But no matter how I dress, people can tell that I'm alternative... Mainly because of my tattoos.

    I'm goth but unless I'm going 'out' I'm way too lazy to put together an outfit every day - I still do good to do full makeup most days lol. Plus there are a few not totally gothy items in my closet that I just love too much to get rid of. :)

    I can't dress goth because of my place of work. There is a uniform, and we aren't allowed to have tattoos or unnatural hair colors. (I really want blue hair, but I settle for black dye.) I can still wear goth jewelry, though. I do very light makeup because our A/C is broken, so I don't want it to run when I sweat.

    I agree just because you don't look the part does not mean your not that type of person. Just because I don't dress Goth all the time does not make me a non goth goth is a lifestyle not a fashion statement like some mainstream people think. I love the Goth lifestyle but I don't want to be backed into a corner and have someone say you have to wear this in order to be Goth that what pisses me off. I love Color and I like black and not all Goths wear black a stereotype people put on Goths who totally have no idea what Goth really is lol =0)

    I want to dress more goth, but...I live in burning hot Texas, my grandma complains when I wear black. Yeah. But I am an eyeliner freak and love goth like jewelry. I sometimes dress goth, but not all the time. When I move and live on my own, I will dress more goth. I mostly got into it because of the music and movies. I love the fashion, but I don't want to at the moment.
