TO WHOEVER READS THIS : Goth is a music based subculture first. As long as you listen to any sub genres of goth your good. You don't have to dress a certain way either. If people don't like the music just the aesthetics that's fine, they can refer to themselves as alternative or darkly inclined ... & there is nothing wrong with that. If you enjoy the music embrace the subculture support your local scene. A WARNING : just don't turn into an Elitist as.shole & you'll be ok

Here is my take on it, yes I identify as goth, I listen to goth music, I dress in a goth aesthetic (most of the time). Also I am nearly 42 years old. When I was younger a person's style/fashion was a conversation starter. If you went to a coffee shop or a bar and saw someone there in a goth aesthetic you knew you could likely start a conversation with them about music and more than likely walk away with a new friend. The fashion is still a conversation starter, the conversations are just different now I guess. I am an extrovert and I enjoy meeting new people, now a days I can no longer just assume that someone with purple hair and an all black wardrobe is going to have anything in common with me. Which is fine, I believe people should dress to make themselves happy. However, I do miss the era where the style and the subculture were more closely entwined, it made breaking the ice with new people a little easier. I agree with you that the style being more commercial has allowed for me to find more office appropriate wardrobe pieces as well as my fashion sense being more acceptable in the office environment, and I do like that. :)

Listening to goth music makes you goth. There's so much misinformation about how "goth is a feeling" or "goth is a style". If you're not goth, there's always liking gothic elements or being 'darkly inclined', heck even just calling yourself 'alternative'. You have to listen to the music to be considered goth! A certain fashion video coming out soon is just going to contribute more to the misinformation and confusion. People forget that a lot of goth fashion was inspired by the musicians themselves, and didn't just come out of nowhere.

Goth is ultimately a music based subculture. There is more to it, but that's the most fundamental part. You wouldn't call yourself a metalhead if you don't listen to metal music, so why call yourself a goth if you don't listen to goth music? It's not a badge of honor or anything, not being goth isn't something negative :)

It's a musical subculture. You should like at least some of the music. No, goth fashion does not make you goth. It is only part of the subculture. The music and literature are an important part of the subculture. There are other aspects too but the music is core. Goth is goth and we can't rewrite history. I feel very similar to you!
Wearing the clothes doesn't automatically make you a goth, nor does listening to the music, or even reading gothic novels. It's a choice to join the subculture and say, "Yes, I am one of these people." Even if you like everything under the goth umbrella, if you don't make that choice... you're not goth.
On the other side, if you want to be goth, I also feel that you really need to know the subculture's roots. Even if you don't like old-school goth music, I think it's important to know who they are and why they matter.
You can't really look at a person and tell if they are a goth. Its not that simple. There is a lot more to it than just clothes. Many people don't put it together that I AM goth because I don't always dress in the more extreme clothing (i have a day job, people XD, and sometimes lazy). I also think it's because I'm blonde, and people think you have to dye your hair black or another color (once again, day job. I'd much rather have green hair) to be goth. And because I listen to other things than just what they think is "goth" music. I've never been the type to be limited by anything. If I like something, I do it. Music, clothes, whatever. That's how I got into goth. I loved the aesthetics and the music and gobbled it up. Just because it's not all of my being doesn't mean it still doesn't fit.

Interesting because I ask myself this ‘am I goth’ I have to say no. I have always enjoyed the dark style of clothing and when young wore black, dyed my hair black but was obsessed with Kate bush, but I also loved the Pet Shop Boys. My favourite time of year was Halloween and was very much interested in the spirit world. I have recently come back to the dark side at age 48 and once again I wear black but I am letting my black hair grow out to it’s natural grey streaks, I consider myself an eclectic solitary witch and I practise on days I do not work. Labels are so tiresome but at the same time comforting and perhaps something to aspire to.

Wow, this is a big topic for it is not all that straightforward in my opinion. We must also take into account the divide of the pre-internet time and the times we are now in. With this I mean that before the internet became commonplace people who dressed Goth usually were into Goth because there was no online shops and you had to visit quite niche shops to get the clothing you wanted. Even getting into Goth was quite hard if you didn't know anybody in the scene because you didn't have any resources to look it up like these days. As I'm Goth for most part of my life I know the struggle as a teenager to get into the whole Goth thing, the access to Goth music was very limited and while there were parties you didn't have a clue where or when, you actually had to stumble onto flyers or by knowing somebody to get you started. Nowadays it's of course much much more easy to get to know about the scene and everything what's around it.
So the internet did 2 things, on the one side it brought the scene closer together (oh where are the times of Gothweb :) ) but on the other side it started the commercialization of what is Goth and opened up the clothing style to people who had/have no idea of what Goth is and what it stands for. But what not is can of course come and a part of them will get interested into the lifestyle that is Goth. Dressing up as a Goth does not make you a Goth per sé, and vice versa of course but Goth being so wide and with so many branches of music there is almost something for everyone. Goth used to be all black and it still is by a large margin but it can be also complete white, or fluorescent and so much more. Goth is not only clothing and music, it's a state of mind, a way of life and a special view on life as a whole.
In my opinion the commercialization of Goth clothing isn't a bad thing because it makes access much more easier for those who never heard of it before because face it, despite being the longest subculture in existence we don't get much attention in the press or on the radio or television and if any usually they make something about the freaks of the scene (I remember that Jambers episode about Goth that was so disgustingly wrong on so many levels). And yes, some people dress up as Goth without being a Goth but usually you can tell when they aren't Goth by small details. After about 20 years in the Goth scene and countless parties and the like later I kind of developed an instinct of knowing who is really into Goth and who just dress up like it.
Getting into Goth has never been so easy, the online sources are plenty and the parties are there (at least when Corona finally fucks off that is). The only thing is that we as a subculture must be open to new people and don't become all scene-queens (and oh yeah, that's a term which includes all genders :p ). Of course there will always be some who consider themselves ÜberGoths but I tend to believe this is only a small group within the Goth community. My general feel is that on Goth parties people are pretty considerate towards each other and I believe that this behavior makes newcomers feel at ease pretty fast and perhaps let them discover their Goth side.
Of course this is a topic that is so large that several books can be written about it. Goth is a package deal but it has become so diverse that there is something for everybody and to be honest, that's why the subculture managed to survive. Many other subcultures got stuck in the same gear for much of their existence and eventually ceased to exist but Goth always carried on because we as a subculture diversified and keep on doing that. This evolution is what keeps the scene alive and kicking and of course no small part because of those who have the guts to organize things we can go to, those are perhaps the real ÜberGoths, worthy of our respect and admiration.

It certainly is important to investigate, research and try to be in the know, especially if a young person wants to be part of any social group, including Goth. I myself don't identify as Goth, but the Goth culture has always fascinated me. This includes the literature, art, spooky things and of course music. Music certainly brings people together, which is awesome. But wish was more prevalent, which would make the world a better place. Exactly. When I first found out about goth, I had no idea about goth music. I got confused by google that implied "Goth listens to heavy metal" which later I found out that is very very inaccurate. So thats when research comes handy. Goth music, original goth club (batcave) history, goth bands, etc all can be discovered if we just put more effort on finding out about the Goth Subculture .
P.S I kinda hate how many blogs n articles in google misleading these babybats on what is goth. They lump other subcultures n dark associated things together (metalhead, punk, witchcraft, satanism etc) n define it goth. Now these infos will be the one that slowly ruining the subculture and attracted these "tourist" which later tell the same misleading info to others that r interested in "Goth"

For me, people who listen to a lot of bands (not only four), who go to the concerts without dressing with goth-associated clothes are also goths even if personally they don't want to be directly associated to the subculture or be putted in a box because music IS the definition of this subculture and they know the history and roots of the scene. For example : a lot of goth umbrella contemporary solo artists or bands don't dress with a really extravagant style that is often associated with the goth scene.
But I think that there is also a second factor : supporting the contemporary bands, labels following the everyday news of the scene. 😊
All the people who don't fit these criterias don't have a relationship to the scene for me. People who just want to be recognized by their style without speaking of music just serve a certain confusion and a superficial image of the subculture...

Hi Orphea! I think I'm a pretty good example of your opinion on this matter. I've worn uber goth clothing back in the day, did the whole Lip Service thing, changed my style and club outfits according to how I felt that day. You know I don't consider myself goth at all despite the clothing and the fact that I went to the club for such a long time, because I just don't listen to what I personally consider to be 'goth music'. I use my style to artistically express myself, while still enjoying other darker things in life. I am totally fine with being called darkly inclined, or just alternative is fine for me! I have a tendency to just fit into and hang out in all alternative subcultures, and no one has ever really accused me of pretending to be someone I am not (thankfully!!) I just want to see ALL alternative subcultures thrive, but it seems like social media has just unfortunately caused a lot of confusion. :/ PS- that e-girl style is cute as hell, but I could never fit into any of that haha. Thanks for such inspiration. I learn much about Goth from your channel. There are many useful information tho.
I have to admit that I never label myself as goth anyway, although I listen a lot to Goth music (most of them are goth popular band - IMHO) like Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division, The Cure, Cocteau Twins, Lacrimosa etc.. Besides, I listen in various range of British alternative rock bands, or symphonic metal as well. I get dressed very often in all black clothing. Even, I'm a man in my 30s, sometimes still wear my knee-high new rock, or 20eye or 14eye docs. But I never do some make-up or wear Goth jewelries/ accessories, or visit cemeteries for any leisure motives. I visit library a lot.
I agree with you for some reasons. It is because I find here in my Country, there are a lot of people wear all black clothing and combine with docs, and goth-like make-up for the girls especially. But, I find them usually hangout in coffee shops or stores which don't represent any goth settings, even never play any goth music there. In my experience, with some little observation, people here who dresses goth usually labeled themselves emo, punk, black metal, or death metal fans, otherwise they are like to hipster or edgy fashion enthusiasts. But, i don't wanna too far away with stereotyping. Perhaps here, in Indonesia, there are very little influence for goth subculture. We don't have any Vampires and Frankenstein-like story in our local horror stories. And most of people usually don't like to discuss anything related about death. It is kind of "taboo", and people prefer to avoid it. Greetings from Indonesia!

Thank you for making this vid, I was very curious about what goth truly was. I've seen the style everywhere and I knew of Marilyn Manson but never really dived into it. But now I've thought about it and it really intrigues me. I read a bit of the goth subculture on Wikipedia and it was really interesting. I'm also curious on the difference between goth and emo. I've listened to my fair share of MCR, Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, and Paramore and I really like their music. I don't classify as goth or emo, I just like the aesthetic, now I won't wear any "goth" or "emo" clothing if it's offensive to both of those subcultures. I've done a little bit of research on both of them and it's really interesting. I would like to dress like that because I think that the aesthetic is very cool and stylish, but I also don't want to offend anyone who is goth or emo. But thanks for making this video, it definitely brought me a lot of understanding about goth culture. Also I just have a little question. How do you have your skin look pale white? I'm just curious and I would like to do that, again, I'm just curious. But again, thanks for making this, it definitely helps broaden my understanding of this very interesting subculture.

I have a dirty job (firearms manufacturing). There is practically no goth scene where I live (near Prescott, AZ), except for one club called The Attic, where I hang out on Saturday nights. Every other club on "Whiskey Row" plays either hip hop or country/western. Sometimes I will go into one of those other places, and people have been accepting, but not too often. (Jan Griffiths).

I identify myself with the goth culture, yet, I don't dress goth. I live in a very hot place all year long. It makes me no less interested in goth. I still listen to Type O Negative, The Sins of Thy Beloved and Virgin Black. I also read novels. I'm only dressed goth when I go all black to the gym at night. But the truth is that I recently overcome two years in deep depression. I dyied my hair red and just got new silver earings for myself to feel more me and a little more goth. Still have to find new cloths for my new body too.

Metalheads listen mainly to metal, goths listens mainly to goth rock/darkwave and the likes, the fashion is an addon, not obligatory, I know of some casual goths who just wear goth band tees and black jeans and docs, no makeup or special jewelry but heck do they love the music! Other addons are gothic literature, gothic movies, lifestyle, architecture, poetry. The music is the base, you can add to it, it's a subculture. Only liking the fashion means you like to dress as a goth, that doesn't make you goth. In the old days we would call you a poseur hehee.

I'll start off by saying I'm a guy that likes metal music and dig the goth style. I think this question has gotten extremely complicated over the years as different groups expand and form. For example, the style and general culture associated with industrial metal (Motionless in While, Manson, etc. - also yes, I know, fuck Manson) and goth, really aren't that different... but the music is, and that is something both groups are very passionate about.
Personally, I think life is really hard. There is a raging pandemic, women are losing their rights in America, the income inequality is at record levels, and so much more that I cannot possibly list it all today. So, I think we should all be more supportive of each other.
Is a metalhead a goth? Not by traditional descriptions, but if they're not hurting anyone, then I genuinely couldn't care less anymore.

I agree. Music is the core, and without listening to at least some of the bands, you're not Goth. As for the fashion for me personally, it has changed a lot. My life has changed especially last year, and the fashion part of me had to take a seat. From all black, to dark woodland fae, to just casual shirt and leggings. I also got into wild swimming and all that nature sports jazz, so 99% of the time, my fashion choices are non-existent lol. And ofc that 'rona keeping me at home.

Goth isn't about fashion or music it's a lifestyle it's the attitude and political. it's to be individual not to look like everybody else and about 90% of so called Goths are fake.. there's no different from them and chav's that wear the same Nike and listen to R&B and hip hop they are all sheep..and don't forget no one was actually called goth.. until someone said that its like punk living a gothic lifestyle and that was in the late 80s and didn't catch on until the 90s.. the punks and sub culture has lost its true meaning.. now you can be an of the shelf goth just buy everything from a goth shop.. so you can all look the same...
