    I feel like Nu goth is a great gateway into the subculture. It was so much easier to shop and see what styles and silhouettes I liked before investing in $80 dresses and $200 shoes lol.

      Brooke Adams - what I really love about my goth is it pulls a lot of elements and inspiration from the 80's, and it has a bit of a witchy vibe to it as well. I love it.

      My style of goth is so weird... I dress kinda 60s'ish. If I had to say, lots of my style ranges from very dark 60s/70s clothes influence to lots of nu-goth in my style, and as well as some 80s clothes here and there. As I do listen to the 80s goth music. I can say, I also would consider myself to have lots of bohemian goth in my style as well.

    Lets be honest if you like to wear a specific thing, be it nu goth or pastel got or even cyber goth and classic goth then where's the issue? they're all just people who like that darker theme but in a different way :) be comfortable with yourself and be proud for those that are

      It kinda feels like people are trying to gatekeep who's goth and who's not just based on what they wear or what music they listen to and it reminds me why I don't get involved in communities. As long as they aren't hurting anyone just let them do what they want and wear what they want.

    I was a teenager in the 90s, so it makes sense that I'm part glitter goth, part hippie goth, part Victorian goth, (but chronic illness leaves me in my PJs most of the time). I totally appreciate the nu goth trend because as you said: it's pretty easy! No corset to lace, no flouncy skirts to get caught on things, and my unteaseable hair fits in just fine. Pastel goth is cute. The sparkle bat in me understands it.

    I've been in love with the gothic subculture for about ten years but have always been timid about getting into the fashion and make up. I live in a very conservative place and have a very conservative family. The nu goth/pastel goth fashion has given me a chance to express myself but still blend in. I don't like calling attention to myself, and these two fashion trends are a little bit more comfortable to wear

    I 100% agree with you on the Pastel Goth and Nu Goth trends! I've liked the Gothic subculture for awhile (particularly the Gothic music, poetry, books, art, etc.), but never really knew how to express myself in the scene in regards to my fashion. I've always appreciated other Goth styles such as Cyber, Trad, Death Rock, Romantic Goth, etc., but they never really suited me. Once I discovered Nu Goth, I realized I found a style that truly fit my aesthetic. Finally having a way to express my style got me more and more interested in growing my knowledge about the Gothic subculture. Now I absolutely love it and I think the scene suits me so well. I mean...I'm still worried other Goths will think I'm "posing" or "following a trend" with the Nu Goth style, but thank you for making this video as it's given me more confidence to express myself! ^.^ ♥

    To me feels like pastel goth is the modern equivalent of the switchblade symphony aesthetic from the 90s. In a decade heavily inspired by the east cultures and post modernism it's a natural outcome. Homogeneity is the ultimate killer of any artistic movement and goth is no exception which I totally agree with you but I honestly feel that people who treat it as an exclusive club frozen in time simply don't know the history of art.

  • @BlackMarshmallow
    @BlackMarshmallow 7 ปีที่แล้ว +136

    I feel the same as you do in regards to pastel goth. I love the colors themselves and like having things with those colors but not wearing them. I feel like it doesn't suit me as much as just all black does. For nu goth, it is really easy to achieve like you said if you have little to no money and it's such a great place to start if you're new to the subculture. I personally don't dress too out there so I think it's not bad at all :).

    A lot of people say that Pastel Goth isn't really subculture due to only having a fashion background, but they don't say that about Gothic Lolita??? I think it's really unfair to glorify the original styles and view new recent takes on gothic fashion as shallow and "not proper goth"

    Finally, someone who approaches this topic logically and without elitism! Thank you for presenting your opinion. Also, I know several "pastel goth" who listen to Gothic music. I would classify myself more as a trad goth more often then not, but I understand these trends in the subculture too. Also, gothic subculture is partially about being who you are and not worrying what people think. Thinking about it like that, Goths should be some of the most accepting in this regard. Let people be themselves even if you don't agree ^^

    • @fofotheclown1051
      @fofotheclown1051 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess the real fear is the beauty of the goth subculture getting diluted into just a trend, when it is so much more than that. People who once degraded and bullied goths for dressing in black, are now jumping on the fashion, and I can fully understand how that pisses a lot of goths off. People need to understand this apart from their own point of view, or there will be no peace or understanding within the subculture.
      Also, just because someone expresses their disagreement/distaste with pastel/nu goth, it doesn't make it necessary for them to be called an "elitist". That term is getting *abused* now-a-days. It's understandable why some are disgusted, even though I like both trends when I dabble into them in my own personal way!

  • @shadowprincess9817

    Pastel is not really my first choice but I do get its appeal, I mean there ARE people who like "darker" things but also like colors and some "silly" themes so Pastel is the best combination for them

    I would respect those styles more if the clothing is more torn and more accessories on it. Goth is based on DIY and I think its important to keep that element in the sub culture

    • @CosmicCats
      @CosmicCats 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think we're at opposite ends of the spectrum. I always admired gothic styles, but would not buy from gothic stores myself as I find the clothes too busy.
      I like a gothic print, I am always on the look out for a black dress with white bat/cat pattern - but it's difficult to find a bat dress that doesn't also have corseting, or lace hems, or spikes, or mesh ect. For that reason, I've often had to DIY or make specific requests of my local dressmakers. I don't think simple clothes exclude a DIY element, creative people will create.

    • @emamarjanovic8631
      @emamarjanovic8631 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Emma C but thats kind of the whole point of the goth subculture because the clothes are very busy looking. No styles have never looked simplistic. I believe nu goth is just for posers.

    • @CosmicCats
      @CosmicCats 7 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      I disagree. The whole point of goth as a style was to take the music, the literature, take whatever aspect of goth that inspired you and express it through your outward appearance. The reason DIY was a part of that was because those clothes didn't exist, so you'd take something and adapt it, or you'd make something from scratch. Before nu-goth, minimalistic goth styles did exist, like corporate goth, for example.

    Being a part of the subculture myself, I choose not to always wear gothic clothes but I do have a side shave and I try different things with my hair including hair colour. People stare at me anyway because I have what is called Hydrocephalus and a huge scar on my head when my head is fully shaved and a pysical disability. So I say, if they want to stare at me, I will give them something to stare at, so I choose to dye my hair purple or red or something abnormal and if they don't like it, they can bugger off. Most people like how I dress or look.

    I think its good to chill about it, so I agree with you. I think the point of why some people are annoyed with pastel or nu goth it's that gothic rock icons were influenced by punk music. So I feel like many goths value the anti establishment mentality of punk. They see bands like the cure, siouxsie and the banshees, and sisters of mercy were a counter movement to the materialistic society of the 80s. Many don't feel like pastel or nu goth reflect that history or mentality. I've heard people say, "well girls are encouraged to be cute so what's goth about it?" Then nu goths is very marketed so not very goth either, to some. It's just one pov and I think it's good to recognize different avenues of self expression as valid since that's a very important part of gothic subculture as well.

    • @znyznyzny
      @znyznyzny 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Jeanette Martinez I don't see how Lolita, Victorian, or even cyber looks THAT related to punk either. It branches off...because it is a different style that came from post punk that came from punk. Different means different even if trad and deathrock are still around.

    • @beardpandaa
      @beardpandaa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ultragaze That is a good point. It is weird to protest nu goth or pastel and not do the same to Lolita or Victorian (cyber could be anti mainstream I guess in some ways).

    • @fofotheclown1051
      @fofotheclown1051 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, to be fair, Gothic Lolita isn't goth - it's a style of the Lolita fashion (which I adore). It just has the word "gothic" in it, as its inspired by the gothic imagery. Same as, for instance, gothic metal, which isn't "goth" at all. It's just the use of the word "gothic" to describe an "aesthetic".

I wouldn't wear it myself unless I get requests to show off the style on videos etc and try to put together something interesting. I like black clothes mostly but once a pastel goth style chick sent me this really pretty pastel purple bracelet and I thought it was so sweet. I am 26 I am a young mum to 3 children (7, 5 and 3) I have been goth for 17yrs, my mother is an elder goth, I dress Nu goth because as a mum it's more comfortable, cheaper and quicker to dress this way, I can run around after my little ones with ease and not give up how I like to dress, us young goth mums get judged enough by society, we don't need people of our own subculture telling us we are aren't apart of the subculture just because we dress Nu goth, (now I know not only goth mums dress this way but, I am speaking from my own experience) it's actually very pathetic, rude and only posers and elitists feel the need to be that intense, since when did goth become about fashion and not about the music, personalities, and being around others with the same interests?

Some other goth Characters you may or may not be interested in is Sarah from Bring it on: in it to win it (a cheerleading film), Miss Perigrine (miss perigrine's home for peculiar children), the main character in The Craft, and there's a cute cartoon called Lenore the little dead girl :)

    It's really nice to see a goth like you who actually can talk about this kindly and not just trash it :)
    My fashion is pretty much 90's inspo, romantic goth, kind of dolly at times, and punk. It depends on how I feel! I think you'd look adorable in pastelgoth, but only just a little. I myself feel best in black. I loved your video (:

    Winnona Ryder was kind of the go-to Goth teen in the 90's, as Lydia in Beetlejuice, Veronica in Heathers and Dinky in Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael (a film that fell into total obscurity). And then there's Nancy, from The Craft ... They were all portrayed as being "weird" and just a little (or a lot) crazy.

    Elder goth here. I've been in the subculture since the 80s, and have been the DIY route, and still DIY and thrift most of my clothes. I wear mostly black, but if I do wear a color, it's either royal blue, lime green, or purple. I do like pastel goth, but I'm too dark for most of those items, and I don;'t really like baby pink. Hot pink is OK though. I agree 100 percent with what you said about styles evolving. They have to. There always has to be new and fresh ideas out there for the subculture to survive. And yep, goth will never be mainstream, but the styles are beautiful, and many have stood the test of time. I myself have evolved into nu goth style. It is a lot easier. (Jan Griffiths).

    I just realised I dress quite nu-goth, and I didn't even know! My style is a weird mix of nu-goth, punk, hippie, grunge and vintage...I basically change my style on a daily basis :D Also, pastel goth is so cute and I kinda wish I could dress like that, but I can't really pull off bright pastel colours :P

    i totally agree with you also I'm glad that those new trends which aren't bad new goth and pastel Goths are cute and are keeping goth alive because like you said it will never be main stream and i don't won't it to fade away, in LA where i live for example is so rare to see anyone dress goth but they all seems to come out on a saturday at bar sinister, but still it isn't like it used to be !! when i lived in London it was much better!!! here in the usa Unfortunatley rap and hip hop have taken over 😢

    I really love Pastel Goth with all the creepy-cute styles. I love the bows with the eyeballs and the spiky headbands with the roses. I love pastel as well as bright neon colours. Pastel Goth is more colourful and I think that's what gets people because there isn't much black involved or it isn't "dark" enough.

    Hi Snowy, just to say that having been Goth for over 30 years, I do use items from mainstream fashion in my look but it does tend to be trad rather than pastel as that seems so far from where we came from. Nu Goth seems more available to more people, so that must be a good thing :) I personally always feel under-dressed whenever I see pictures of Whitby festival or if I go to gigs so there will always be someone Gother-than-thou!!!!

    i love nu goth style honestly because it is easy to attain. I have been involved in the goth subculture since I was 14 and I have always just diyed everything or ebayed everything since. i put together my outfits on whichever style i feel like wearing that day. it can be 90's, romantic, deathrock, trad goth, nu goth....it is whatever i feel like. thats how goth should be honestly is just expresseing yourself in whatever darkly inclined style and interests you have!

    Being the artist that I am I try to see beauty in all things. Including which is very different. I particularly don't like labeling. Though it does help others at times with research and identifying. I really think that we need to be more open minded and respectful of others. Tearing someone down solves nothing. I look at it this way. We are all unique individuals and to each his or her own when it comes to styles ect... I wear what I like and can afford. Some items I restyle and make them my own. When you go to a Art/History Museum there is so much variety to see. We can learn from each other. I love seeing people express themselves in art, poetry, music, fashion ect... they are living life and having fun. As for Symbolism that is a preference. But doing your research helps just in case you get in a awkward situation that goes south. Hugs and blessings.

    I think Nu Goth happened because of all the scene and emo kids, etc. falling out of that specific subculture and trying to find their way in alternative fashion as a whole. With pastel goth, I love it so much because people like me no longer need to feel the pressure to decide between two things we love; cute and creepy.

    As an elder goth who has identified as goth since the early 1990s (though my style fit it even when I was a child in the '80s before I even knew what goth was), I love pastel goth and nu goth. I think it's fantastic that the creativity within the goth subculture is continuing to grow and change. It's keeping a subculture that has meant so much to me throughout my life alive and it inspires me to continue to play with my own fashion. It gives new life to something that would get boring and die out otherwise.
    I love seeing what new things people come up with. Creativity and self expression have always been at the core of goth and I love seeing that those things continue to be important even after several decades.

    I like Goth music. I like wearing black. I like dramatic makeup and dying my hair "unnatural" colors. I've never considered my style of dressing as goth. I call it preppy with an edge 😊
    I do love the goth style though... I really admire how creative some people get with their outfits and overall look. I like taking basic black pieces and adding accessories that have a bit of a goth vibe. Possibly I've got a bit of the nu-goth in me...

    I also feel like nugoth and pastel goth are good gateways for people just getting into the subculture too, and either can't afford some of the more expensive goth clothing, or are young and have parents who don't want them to wear all black, or are transitioning from a "normal" style to goth. Or, you know, maybe they're lazy like me and don't want to put a ton of effort into their fashion upkeep, or, also like me, don't want to subscribe to *one* sort of label. I really like your viewpoint on these, I feel like there's so much exclusion and elitism in the goth community, expecially pointed toward nu and pastel goths, and it's not a cute thing.

  • @arthurwatts1680
    @arthurwatts1680 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree that elements of the nu goth look are easier on those of us who dont necessarily get some of the more extreme aspects of the subculture. Its interesting that many of the people I grew up with in the 70s - Robert Smith, Siouxsie etc - have gone to great pains in interviews to disown their own influence on goth culture, presumably because they didnt want to be painted into a style corner (even if Smith seems happy to retain much the same look all these years later). Yvonne De Carlo and Carolyn Jones remain the prototypical trad goth for mine but I doubt that either would have worn any of their wardrobe away from the set - happy to hear otherwise. My first interaction with the people we currently consider 'trad' would have been late 70s / early 80s - they were just people who wore a lot of black and hung around with punks. The vast majority had black hair and pale skin - not a great combo in a surf-obsessed city like Sydney but a perfect fit for the group they hung with. I was into quite a few post-punk / new wave bands at the time but I cant say I saw a lot of the alternative crowd at gigs - even imports like the Ramones and the Clash seemed to have an audience composed mostly of 'normals' with the odd weekend punk (mohawks didnt fare too well in job interviews). I didnt think much of it when that group started to dwindle in the 90s - life moves on etc - but its interesting to see that goth survived while so much of the transitory fashion from the last 4 decades disappeared. Thanks for the vid.
