why do people have a problem with her being 22 & labeling herself goth? she looks beautiful! i've seen so many people in the alternative style in older age, with lots of tattoos & piercings & i think that's pretty rad.
I feel like I don't really have a style tbh. One day I could wear full goth then dress like a hippie, then Emo/Scene type look, then really girly. Idk it's just a jumble of crap haha. I usually gravitate to the more alternative stuff but I do find myself wearing other types a lot.
There's an important universal lesson in this video. I think we in the comments can all agree that every single one of those photos was absolutely beautiful, yet she was insecure about herself at those times and still embarrassed about some of the pictures. Lesson being that the way you see yourself is likely FAR from how most other people see you! You really are your own worst critic and you are all beautiful to someone.

I think your current look is the best. It really suits you, Fuck everyone who says "you look better without so much makeup" Makeup is just another expression of yourself, like wearing clothes. It doesn't mean you're insecure. You wear this look like a queen and I can tell how much more comfortable you look.
When I was 14 I would also rock the eyeliner around the eyes with a bright top in blue or purple with a pearl necklace. Combined with some ripped jeans and maybe some pink legwarmers. Oh puberty....

This was amazing! I definitely want to try out reacting to old photos, the awkward middle school pics are always hilarious. I was never really comfortable either when I was younger, but I loved having colored hair and being able to dress crazily. I loved your story that went along with this!

+Vein That's not always true. Exercise and a healthy diet won't really help you lose weight during puberty. It usually just goes away on its own. I started putting on weight around the age of 11, and I ate healthy food and probably exercised a lot more than I do now, but still didn't lose any weight. I've only just started losing weight now that I'm almost 17.
Ally Nagle Well, every body is different. You have to look what works best for you. But it is important to change your diet to a healthier one to keep the weight loss you achieved.

Being confused about who you are and trying to accept yourself is the whole point of being a teenager; it's completely normal and not at all unnatural that you went through that. I'm amused by how you think this is the style you have found for yourself that you'll now stay with forever. That won't be the case. :D Your entire life is a process in that way! Lastly, I'm slightly uncomfortable looking at your dermal piercings nets to that net fabric. Don't they ever get caught in that? I hope not!
Im 15 right now and my style had definitely changed over the years. I've definitely had that embarrassing emo and scene phase haha. I still love the cure and all the gothic music I listened to, but I've changed my style but goth had always had a place in my heart because that's what I've been since 12-14. I feel like I know you a lot better that you showed us those photos haha I definitely laughed along and understood where you were coming from with the body issues aswell as i too am struggling with this at this stage and you saying that you feel better at 18 with who you are and how you dress makes you so happy and I cant help but feel so happy for you too! I'm not saying anything untrue, but when you're not ready to hear it, you react by outcasting the person who said it. That's what you're trying to do to me. But what compels me to comment at all is not because I reject that young people pass through these phases in their lives, but that she has such a huge platform and audience through which her juvenile way of thinking can be reinforced. I wonder if all that validation can prevent someone from growing. She is, after all, not a teenager anymore. Nope. Having tastes is for everyone. I think the biggest factor is not in how you dress, but rather how you talk about how you dress. Like the defensive kid that responded to me, Gerard Way..., who says that he's 'alternative,' whatever that means. I have plenty of friends who dress in unconventional ways, but they don't limit themselves by identifying with a vague, meaningless label such as 'alternative.' It's not a bug deal, but people are fooling themselves if they think they'll never change their opinions or tastes over the course of their lives, especially when they've probably got more life left than they've already lived. But defensiveness goes with the territory. I think my statement makes some people feel like they're not being taken seriously, but I respect that people find some things really important at times in their lives that others don't. But passing through is normal, because we are always growing and, hopefully, becoming more intelligent, sophisticated, and refined as we get older. :)
I'm sure it will take you more than a couple years to grow out of your teenage defensiveness. But that's normal, especially if you are still a teenager. :)

There are 30 year olds who are goth. There are people who get married, have jobs, and have families and still are goth. People will have styles until they die. This is just hers.

To be fair it is a phase for a lot of people. It was for me and the majority of the other scene/goth/emo kids back in high school. Time goes by and people change, it's just life. Now all the former alternative kids are hipsters. Some people truly do stay the same, but a lot of them won't.

I went thru a ton of styles too growing up; mainly tho because Goth wasn't allowed in my home. So I went the polar opposite and dd decora. Absolutely still love it and would do it again if I could, but I'm very happy to finally be me.
do you wear all that makeup during the summer? i'm not goth, but typically for me i start wearing lighter styles of makeup in the summer. do you still go around in 80 degree weather wearing white foundation and black clothes?

I definitely agree with that you said about wishing it could be easier to be confident and dress the way you want to! I've struggled with that kind of thing my entire life and am currently in the process of looking and acting like who I actually want to be, although I'm 22 years old. I guess sometimes it just (unfortunately) takes some time.

To be fair it is a phase for a lot of people. It was for me and the majority of the other scene/goth/emo kids back in high school. Time goes by and people change, it's just life. Now all the former alternative kids are hipsters. Some people truly do stay the same, but a lot of them won't.

I went thru a ton of styles too growing up; mainly tho because Goth wasn't allowed in my home. So I went the polar opposite and dd decora. Absolutely still love it and would do it again if I could, but I'm very happy to finally be me.

I definitely agree with that you said about wishing it could be easier to be confident and dress the way you want to! I've struggled with that kind of thing my entire life and am currently in the process of looking and acting like who I actually want to be, although I'm 22 years old. I guess sometimes it just (unfortunately) takes some time.
