That bird is so cute. I just love how you do your feathers. I'm going to practice so I can surprise my husband with an Eagle. Here are some tips on watercolor pencils I've picked up here and there. If you use a stiffer brush it will reduce the watercolor pencil line weight. I use my Golden Taklon or synthetic sable brushes. The Royal Langnickle Gold Taklon or Princeton Velvet Touch Collection works well. Problem is layering because those brushes will scrape off bottom layers. For me, the best way to use watercolor pencils is in a certain layering process. First a layer of staining watercolors. Second layer, watercolor pencils activated with water. Third or final touches of watercolor pencils not activated with water. Or like you mentioned in my travel art journal. Love drawing or sketching watercolor artwork with them. One more thing, you can get some cool calligraphy effects by writing the letters then using the waterbrush to fade out the color. Mostly, use them for fine details, shadows and sometimes under drawings. Thanks for sharing your beautiful painting.

Another beautiful painting, thank you for sharing with us. 🎨 I have a tip regarding watercolour pencils - take a plastic palette and lightly sand the wells, then you can rub the pencils in the well depositing some pigment, add a few drops of water and hey presto you have paint. I love your painting Louise! I think another way to use watercolor pencil would be preparing a mix of water and some of the pigment from the pencil that you can obtain from sharpening it.
hello Louise, I have those pencil brands also, you did say Caran d,ache properly...sometimes I use the Prismacolor VERITHIN they give a lovely thin line if you want to outline or add details...my favourite are Faber Castell, the WC Pencils are beautiful but the Verithin are not WC pencils....enjoying your helpful tips you give! Enjoy the journey, and cherish yourself as an artist each step of the way. Your painting will improve with each painting you do, and you'll naturally get better. But the art you do today is a reflection of who you are and what you know right now, and it has value for that reason. I have work I did years ago that disappointed me at that time, but I look at it now and like it. You're probably better than you realize. :)
This was wonderful! I just purchased some watercolor pencils and tried them. Much the same as you. Then I found ur video! Using them lightly for detail shading, I had not tried yet. Lindsey the Furgal Crafter, she uses sanded paper because it picks up the colored lead then activates it w/ water. She said its much like working with oils. Thanks for ur videos they r so helpful! :)
wonderful colour blending and result with wc pencils. I shave a bit of paint end of the pencil onto a regular pallet and activate the pigment on the pallet so you can even blend colour pencil colours.You know, if you needed to add Windsor violet to them :):)
P.S. I meant to say Faber-Castell Albrecht-Durer in my last comment as the watercolor pencil of choice these days for most artists I see on TH-cam (but I personally love Dewent Inktense, so vibrant), and I just looked in my stash and I have 081 of the Supracolor, so I'm doing a Happy Dance in my pajamas, weeeee! I've watched many of your videos. Love your voice, your approach, your work. And....you bloopers, of course. I have not seem any where your drawing isn't already complete. Do you draw free-hand directly onto the paper? Some of the lines look as if you may have transferred after drawing. Stay safe and healthy!

Regular colored pencils (ones that are not water soluble) also make a great combination with watercolor. Dried watercolor paint makes a GREAT base for them. The dried paint is a little bit grippy and takes to the pencil perfectly. So if anyone wants to use their pencils like she did in this video (NOT activating with water) and you have regular colored pencils and not watercolor pencils, that's totally fine. No need to buy watercolor pencils if you only plan on using them dry.

Thank you so much for showing your techniques with wc pencils. Personally I use them very much in the same way like you on details. As I love outdoor sketching sometimes I use them to make paper palets. That way I can carry along several different colors/palets with my minimum equipment in a pocket (little sketchbook with paper palets, pencil, waterbrush). Lovely video - happy painting!!!
Tip: You can do that paper palette trick on a plastic palette if you rough it up first with sandpaper. It would probably work without roughing it. Saves paper. Thanks.

Wow so many cool birds!!! My neighborhood is surrounded by woods and I have bird feeders along with bird houses. I've only lived here for a year (South Carolina, USA) and moved here from central Florida. The birds here aren't as exotic of course as where you live but I get mostly song birds which I love. Since last Spring I have seen Cardinals, Wrens, (lots of wrens), Pine Warblers, Titmouse, Chickadee, Morning Dove, Goldfinch, Indigo Bunting, Grackles, lots of Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds and only once I saw a Downy Woodpecker. For several months I have had a pair of Bluebirds nesting in one of the birdhouses. The female can't make up her mind which house she wants to stay in. She goes back and forth between two of my birdhouses. I love them all though and am always happy to see them. You are lucky to have all those exotic, gorgeous birds in your area.
Laughed my head off at the end! Thanks for another great video. You probably already know this but in case you don’t…Caran d’Ache make a small rough palette specifically for removing pigment from the pencils and blending.
Beautiful job, as always! To use watercolor pencil on a palette, I would advise against doing so on paper. It's wasteful, and who knows what sizing rubs off the paper and gets in the paint. Instead, you can use a piece of white plastic which you can rough up with sandpaper for grip. Also, to activate the rubbed pigments on the palette, I use a 100:1 mixture of gum arabic in distilled water. This makes the pencil pigments more compatible with my regular watercolors. I keep this magic potion in a 100 ml dropper bottle; makes mixing a cinch.
...the best best pencils for me are the "Albrecht Dürer "from Faber Castell, because you do not see the lines and the colors are wunderfull, but I like although Caran dache, best wishes from Cologne, Germany, sorry for my bad english :-(

Watercolor pencils are the best if you're travelling or painting outdoors 👍 I prefer tubes but pencils are lightweight and convenient... I hate dried up pans that get cross contaminated. I don’t know if you’ve ever used prismacolor colored pencils but, I’ve learned recently you can use the white pencil like the way you used the white watercolor pencil for the little white flicks of feathers. They are more opaque than the white watercolor pencil. Also you can use the white prismacolor premier pencil as a resist for watercolor. I really don’t know if it has to say premier but, mine does and I know it works. You probably know all this but just in case you didn’t maybe it will be useful? Have a great day! Debbie

Such a gorgeous painting! I am acrylic artist but am dabbling in water colour. I am really struggling with watercolour, but love water colour pencils as I have more control!
Beautiful work, thank you. I think many of the manufacturers tell you to keep the pencils themselves dry because of issues with damage to the leads. Also, Derwent Inktense are actually quite resistant to rewetting. I was surprised when I tried it and it interfered with attempts to reactivate areas that had dried. It can be quite useful though, once you get used to it, because it allows layering. I am getting quite fond of these pencils, but am a bit disappointed that there may be problems with lightfastness in some colours.
You worry too much about the occasional vocal slip. Everyone does it, and most people would not even notice if you said boom instead of bloom. Or just say flower instead of flower bloom. What we appreciate is your generous instruction.
I am just beginning. I was wondering if you could show how to paint in larger areas, example a flower pot with flowers. My flower pot was crazy inconsistent color.
Wow I’ve always wanted to incorporate watercolor pencils in my paintings - I usually tend to gravitate towards ink for a line and wash effect. I recently bought the Fantasia brand which are quite affordable and very pigmented. I would say they rival the prismacolors. Have you tried those before?
thanks for this video. i came to the same conclusion, that watercolour pencils are not very helpful^^ well you didnt really say that... your pencils work still better than mine: for me its not possible to make a white mark on a colour wash, the white wont show. i have the faber castell goldfaber aqua and i regret buyin them, not for the brand, but for the principle of watercolour pencils per se.
This was very helpful. I will try this technique for birds in the future. I think the control will be helpful especially for tail and flight feathers as I always blur them and can't quite get the lines straight.
Another gorgeous painting and great video. To save paper,I sometimes scrape the end of the pencil with a sharp knife over a palette. The fine shavings then can be hydrated with water.

I'm really enjoying your videos (I just recently found your channel!). I have several sets of watercolor pencils.They can vary in their ability to dissolve on paper (as well as on the type of paper). My favorites are Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer and Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle (I believe the latter ones are all lightfast but you should check the individual ratings on all pencils for display work). I do not like using pencils that do not dissolve easily and completely when water is applied. With higher quality pencils, you should not have marks left on your paper once you apply water with your brush. Another brand of pencils I like are the Derwent Inktense, but several of the colors are not lightfast. The Inktense pencils are ink - they dry more permanent (i.e. they don't move much, if at all, once they dry). You can download color charts from their respective websites and either buy separate pencils or full sets (the sets are a better value but open stock may be bought for replacements when they run out, or if you just want to try a couple). Love your beautiful paintings! You are lucky to have so many beautiful birds right in your backyard. I viewed many of those you mentioned on my trips to Oz.
I just wanted to add a couple more things now that I watched the entire video. You can use WC pencils as you used the water soluble graphite, to sketch with then activate - high quality pencils will dissolve completely, with no lines left behind. Thus you can even use them to draw your initial sketch, instead of regular graphite that needs to be erased or covered up. You can layer the pencils for mixing on paper. High quality WC pencils *are* WC paint and should have all the same properties, plus the pencil form. I highly recommend that you try the pencils I mentioned above and maybe sell or give away the ones you currently have; as you have noticed, they are more difficult to dissolve, and I doubt many are lightfast. Although the brand name may be good, you are not using the artist grade versions - think of them more like the student grades.

We learned to use watercolor pencils as a way to add texture to our paintings by rubbing the pigment against a piece of sandpaper above the still damp paper. This allows the pigment to fall and spread organically thereby creating additional interest and texture.

Wow. Those watercolor pencils really come in handy. Especially the lighter valued colors (like that light granite rose/pink) for highlights that would otherwise be difficult or impossible. The pencils make them so easy and convenient. I just got the 60-color set of Faber Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils and they're amazing quality.
Your Galah is beautiful and you did a great job using the pencils. I bought a set of 60 Faber -Castell Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils and tried them, didn't like them that much and never use them. Added to the collection of other numerous art supplies I have bought and never use 😂 I prefer regular watercolours so much more. Thank you for the great video and wonderful bloopers:)

Wow so many cool birds!!! My neighborhood is surrounded by woods and I have bird feeders along with bird houses. I've only lived here for a year (South Carolina, USA) and moved here from central Florida.
The birds here aren't as exotic of course as where you live but I get mostly song birds which I love. Since last Spring I have seen Cardinals, Wrens, (lots of wrens), Pine Warblers, Titmouse, Chickadee, Morning Dove, Goldfinch, Indigo Bunting, Grackles, lots of Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds and only once I saw a Downy Woodpecker. For several months I have had a pair of Bluebirds nesting in one of the birdhouses. The female can't make up her mind which house she wants to stay in. She goes back and forth between two of my birdhouses. I love them all though and am always happy to see them.
You are lucky to have all those exotic, gorgeous birds in your area.

Laughed my head off at the end! Thanks for another great video. You probably already know this but in case you don’t…Caran d’Ache make a small rough palette specifically for removing pigment from the pencils and blending.

Beautiful job, as always! To use watercolor pencil on a palette, I would advise against doing so on paper. It's wasteful, and who knows what sizing rubs off the paper and gets in the paint. Instead, you can use a piece of white plastic which you can rough up with sandpaper for grip. Also, to activate the rubbed pigments on the palette, I use a 100:1 mixture of gum arabic in distilled water. This makes the pencil pigments more compatible with my regular watercolors. I keep this magic potion in a 100 ml dropper bottle; makes mixing a cinch.
...the best best pencils for me are the "Albrecht Dürer "from Faber Castell, because you do not see the lines and the colors are wunderfull, but I like although Caran dache, best wishes from Cologne, Germany, sorry for my bad english :-(

Watercolor pencils are the best if you're travelling or painting outdoors 👍 I prefer tubes but pencils are lightweight and convenient... I hate dried up pans that get cross contaminated. This painting was superb Louise 👌 You are so skilled... I asked Liron to do a review of you in his "masters" series 👍😁 thanks so much for sharing 🙏
I don’t know if you’ve ever used prismacolor colored pencils but, I’ve learned recently you can use the white pencil like the way you used the white watercolor pencil for the little white flicks of feathers. They are more opaque than the white watercolor pencil. Also you can use the white prismacolor premier pencil as a resist for watercolor. I really don’t know if it has to say premier but, mine does and I know it works. You probably know all this but just in case you didn’t maybe it will be useful? Have a great day!

I think many of the manufacturers tell you to keep the pencils themselves dry because of issues with damage to the leads.
Also, Derwent Inktense are actually quite resistant to rewetting. I was surprised when I tried it and it interfered with attempts to reactivate areas that had dried. It can be quite useful though, once you get used to it, because it allows layering.
I am getting quite fond of these pencils, but am a bit disappointed that there may be problems with lightfastness in some colours.
You worry too much about the occasional vocal slip. Everyone does it, and most people would not even notice if you said boom instead of bloom. Or just say flower instead of flower bloom. What we appreciate is your generous instruction.
I am just beginning. I was wondering if you could show how to paint in larger areas, example a flower pot with flowers. My flower pot was crazy inconsistent color.
Wow I’ve always wanted to incorporate watercolor pencils in my paintings - I usually tend to gravitate towards ink for a line and wash effect. I recently bought the Fantasia brand which are quite affordable and very pigmented. I would say they rival the prismacolors. Have you tried those before?

thanks for this video. i came to the same conclusion, that watercolour pencils are not very helpful^^ well you didnt really say that... your pencils work still better than mine: for me its not possible to make a white mark on a colour wash, the white wont show. i have the faber castell goldfaber aqua and i regret buyin them, not for the brand, but for the principle of watercolour pencils per se.
The only thing that would make your channel any better ....MORE!
This was very helpful. I will try this technique for birds in the future. I think the control will be helpful especially for tail and flight feathers as I always blur them and can't quite get the lines straight.

Another gorgeous painting and great video. To save paper,I sometimes scrape the end of the pencil with a sharp knife over a palette. The fine shavings then can be hydrated with water.

I'm really enjoying your videos (I just recently found your channel!). I have several sets of watercolor pencils.They can vary in their ability to dissolve on paper (as well as on the type of paper). My favorites are Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer and Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle (I believe the latter ones are all lightfast but you should check the individual ratings on all pencils for display work). I do not like using pencils that do not dissolve easily and completely when water is applied. With higher quality pencils, you should not have marks left on your paper once you apply water with your brush. Another brand of pencils I like are the Derwent Inktense, but several of the colors are not lightfast. The Inktense pencils are ink - they dry more permanent (i.e. they don't move much, if at all, once they dry). You can download color charts from their respective websites and either buy separate pencils or full sets (the sets are a better value but open stock may be bought for replacements when they run out, or if you just want to try a couple). Love your beautiful paintings! You are lucky to have so many beautiful birds right in your backyard. I viewed many of those you mentioned on my trips to Oz.
I just wanted to add a couple more things now that I watched the entire video. You can use WC pencils as you used the water soluble graphite, to sketch with then activate - high quality pencils will dissolve completely, with no lines left behind. Thus you can even use them to draw your initial sketch, instead of regular graphite that needs to be erased or covered up. You can layer the pencils for mixing on paper. High quality WC pencils *are* WC paint and should have all the same properties, plus the pencil form. I highly recommend that you try the pencils I mentioned above and maybe sell or give away the ones you currently have; as you have noticed, they are more difficult to dissolve, and I doubt many are lightfast. Although the brand name may be good, you are not using the artist grade versions - think of them more like the student grades.

Thank you so much for sharing your awesome talent and totally engaging personality 🥰. Your videos are my new obsession. I took a class with Wisconsin watercolor artist Karlyn Holman . We learned to use watercolor pencils as a way to add texture to our paintings by rubbing the pigment against a piece of sandpaper above the still damp paper. This allows the pigment to fall and spread organically thereby creating additional interest and texture.

I only draw graphite portraits, period. That's my one and only art subject and medium. When I tell my son that I discovered a superb watercolor teacher on You Tube and that I'm going to start painting birds, I think he won't believe me :-D That's how inspiring your are! Thanks again

Wow. Those watercolor pencils really come in handy. Especially the lighter valued colors (like that light granite rose/pink) for highlights that would otherwise be difficult or impossible. The pencils make them so easy and convenient. I just got the 60-color set of Faber Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils and they're amazing quality.
Your Galah is beautiful and you did a great job using the pencils. I bought a set of 60 Faber -Castell Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils and tried them, didn't like them that much and never use them. Added to the collection of other numerous art supplies I have bought and never use 😂 I prefer regular watercolours so much more. Thank you for the great video and wonderful bloopers:)
