I always understood that dipping a watercolour pencil in water was a no-no as it wicks the water up into the lead and therefore makes it just like an ordinary coloured pencil
Good point. And I think if you avoid dipping the wood, just the lead, it's fine since only the outer edge of the lead is wet and quickly wears off and back to a dry lead after applying to paper. I never had a problem doing it like this and I use a lot of the same pencils over and over.
@paintingandchocolate I would never dip them. They are to expensive to have the lead/ink dissolve or the wood be ruined.
I use a brush carefully on the tip.
I understand, do what feels better and the brush is an alternative

Thank you for the great tip about using hot press paper. I find it interesting that Inktense continue to state that the ink in Inktense will not lift once dry, when I'm sure all of us have found this to be untrue. I love the intensity of the Inktense colors and pair them with the muted tones of Derwent Graphitint, both pencils and watercolor pan sets.

What a great idea! The strength and weakness both of watercolor pencils are their texture. Consequently, they are great to add texture to a watercolor painting.

I was so waiting for the content you are sharing. Thank you! So good to hear from someone like you, what are my insight, experience, and thoughts about papers, inktense, and all the things you are talking about, but the rest of the content creators don't mention here on TH-cam. I learnt the harder way but efficiently, by own experience these things about paper.. I have not much time for videós, it is watching or doing, for me.
I think I will try out skillshare, after 2 years of learning curve now I feel like I have "skills" to improve 😂 or at least, to learn and develop skills.
And to not be scared of drawing or painting.

Good info Mrs chocolate. I would,have struggled with cold pressed paper and no doubt been frustrated with the pencils. I am envisioning an int3nse ocean wave painting now with gorgeous greens and turquoise showing/glowing through the wave as it catches the light.

I have a small set of these Ink base colored pencils. They are amazing, I use them in combination with water color on water color paper.

The technique you show (using the pencils like watercolor pans) is a wonderful way to take advantage of Inktense's ability to layer without any muddling--- a lot like watercolor itself, when doing glazes, but without watercolor's necessary long drying time between layers. But I'm a drawer so using the pencils directly on dry paper is non-negotiable for me. I've been looking for papers that will leave no pencil stroke marks. I tried literally dozens of paper samples and found that hot press papers are the worst for this (obliterating the stroke mark) probably because of their sizing issues. Among the cold press papers, there was a big range of effectiveness for this performance characteristic. My top choices right now for dry Inktense application are Fabriano Artistico and Strathmore 500 cold press. Still, even with them, technique is all-important and also some Inktense colors just don't activate as well.
I've become a bit of a paper nerd since collecting all these samples so thank you so much for drawing attention to paper!

Not cotton, and I think it is cold press but I found it great.

I have been able to lift from watercolor paper with the Derwent pencils, but not in a regular sketchbook paper. I've tried applying wet on wet and dry to wet, but no lift there. I love the vibrant colors tho, such fun effects! ❤

Can u use any plastic palette to color on?
This is what I use and it works well because of the rough texture of it.
@@barblallier9413 I use a mini/smaller chopping board which has some teeth. And porcelaine plates from my coffee mug. Only for watercolour purpose. I love to be creative and one does not always need to buy expensive /fancy stuff, just to have a logo or brand on it.
There are, though, lot of functional, practical things out there which always worth to look at. But as a hobby art menace I will not just buy anything, and I rather spend that money on quality paper, brush or supply.

I haven’t tried it myself (as it’s pretty expensive!) but I’ve seen that Derwent offer their own watercolour paper, called Inktense Paper, specifically for these pencils. 🙂

Hi Francoise, I have just recently discovered your channel and I have watched several if not all of your watercolor pencil videos. They are wonderful. I also signed up for a trial membership at SkillShare and I have completed your apple class. It too was wonderful and I spent several enjoyable hours rendering an apple using your techniques. I DID NOT enjoy my experience navigating the SkillShare website however. In fact, after 2-3 hours attempting to get the site to work properly I have decided to cancel my trial membership. The frustration is not worth the trouble and the monthly payment. Even finding a way to cancel my trial membership was impossible. I finally just canceled through PayPal. Anyway, watercolor (and ink) pencils have been such an enigma for me and I'm really interested in using them. Thank you.

May I ask if you know which media group would this be classed as officially, please? Ink, pencil, or watercolour?
Great question 😁 I would say watercolor, although one could argue they're pencils first and foremost.the end result is a watercolor style though. Definitely not ink as far as I'm concerned, as ink makes me think of the standard black inks first.
I love hot press paper for watercolor.. The colors are brighter because they don't absorb into the paper. I will try my pencils with it.

I am using a cheap brand of watercolor pencils over Baohong textured paper .. it 's just a bit too patchy and uneven ... sadly I cannot afford the higher end watercolor pencils/paper .. is there a chance you would show how to get better results using affordable brands?
I understand. It's a good idea. I think even cheap watercolor paper will work very well as long as It's smooth enough, since even coloring paper works.
Pick cellulose paper if you want to apply watercolour pencils, crayons or markers directly on the paper; I feel they just don't work as well on cotton paper.
Paper is the most important, i tend to find. If you don't get along with the very base upon which everything else is used, the texture or make of the paper, good luck. It can only lead to dissapointment, and the road there is paved with frustration to boot!
From my own experience at least. For my part, I absolutely loathe working on rough paper. cotton or cellulose don't even matter at that point, I'll hate my time with it all the same!

Well lets see, when I wet the tip of the pencil before applying it to the paper, I don't have the issue of still seeing the lines. Of course you do have to wet the tip often. I have also used them with my paper submerged under water and that worked insanely awesome. But the pencils do require a feather light touch to avoid seeing the lines if that's an issue for you. Also using the side of the pencil, rather than standing it up on its point helps to prevent this issue.

Lightfastness? I was surprised by the use of the ink gel at towards the end of the video, where does that fit in as to longevity and lightfastness of your piece? Is acid-free and long term stability of the pieces a goal, a compromise? Thank you for your work on this. I am new to this medium outside of using it for planning acrylic or oil pieces. I would like to use it as an alternative medium.
I understand your point. I paint for fun and experimentation. White gel pens are fantastic to have fun and practice realism with crisp highlights.

Good hot pressed paper is expensive. I’ll try mixed media paper as practice.

I appreciate your suggestions and techniques. However, I'm confused, considering the way you use the pencils brushing them onto a pallet and watering them there. It seems to me you might as well use watercolor or gauche since you are treating the pencil as if it were those mediums to begin with.
Yes I understand. This question has come up, so I explained the benefits 2 videos after that. Overall I only use them in this way in the beginning, it avoids having to use watercolor and the pencils in one piece. And still get the perks of using a pencil for the detailed parts.
I use Caran D Ache watercolor pencils,,,so much better than Derwent!!!
I have them too, I love them both, my absolute fave are the Faber Castell Albrecht Dürer watercolor pencils.
what is the difference with just watercolor? It looks the same to me.
It's more vibrant when activated, it's more obvious when you see it next to it, I made a video about it.

Why not using watercolor!? At least it doesn't have kind of cornstarch binder in it. I used several different brands of watercolor pencils they all laking.

Why use them and not just use paint?
The pleasure of using pencils in the coloring stage, the texture only they can create, and with inktense, the general intensity of colors.

Yes I agree they are! There are smaller sets and open stock options. Also maybe with Christmas coming,.family may gift them to you?
What’s the point of this technique- rather just use regular water colour paints surely and just use pencils for finer finishes?
Juse using one supply for everything and the pleasure of using pencils overall.
personally i find watercolors on brush impossible to control - i never managed to understand it. with pencils it seems much easier to get the values you want. you also don't need to worry about your palette getting contaminated, or cleaning/wetting your brush all the time.
