I have both Albrecht Durer and Caran d'Ache pencils and I think the Caran d'Ache are slightly better; the colour depth is almost identical, but the CD are softer and easier to apply. The CD are also slightly thinner which I prefer. The CD are also better for multilayering (as your video highlights). Both pencils are top quality. Only the Staedtler come close. Plus, CD are the only ones which specify light fastness. So, if you want the best, Caran d'Ache is the goto if you can afford them! Love your presentation style. You are my top TH-cam water colourist.
@@paintingandchocolate Yes, the Karat. Not much about them on the net, but I have found them as good as Albrecht Durer. And they are nice and thin, but with plenty of core. Of course the big advantage of Caran d'Ache is they are readily available singly unlike the Karat.
The Museum Aquarelle is 1 peso cheaper than Albrecht Durer in an open stock. Museum Aquarelle is 149 in Philippine Pesos per pencil while the Albrecht Durer is 150 pesos per pencil. Purchasing them in sets will make the Caran d'Ache almost double the price compared to Albrecht Durer. I guess it's the box that made it too expensive.
For those of us who care about longevity of the artwork, your remark about lightfastness is crucial. Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle and Derwent Inktense are measured with the industrial BLUE WOOL STANDARD (BWS) test, which rates lightfastness from 1 to 8, with only a 7 or 8 being acceptable for artists selling their work. - I never found precise info about the testing of any Faber-Castell product, but their three-stars rating means you can only hope any three-star color will really last. A Faber-Castell rating of two stars is the equivalent of 5.3 on the BWS, far too low. - Derwent is the most straightforward, using the 8-step BWS measurements as ratings for their pencils. For the 100 Inktense pencils, only about 50% rate a 7 or 8 on the BWS; It was the same when they had only 72 colors about 10 years ago. I don't use them because the colors are too saturated for my taste. - Caran d'Ache also does a (lesser) bit of fudging for the Museum Aquarelle, using a five-star scale even though the measurements were made with the BWS test. Still, if one counts only their five-star colors, that represents a magnificent 80% of their 72 colors! A Caran d'Ache rating of four stars is the equivalent of 6.4 on the BWS, not that far from 7. If we'd count them as valid provided the artwork is displayed away from bright light, we'd get a ratio of 93% of Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle colors as acceptably lightfast!
Looking forward to more watercolor pencil videos. I hope you consider a video on papers to use with watercolor pencils...if your thinking is different from regular water color papers.
@@stevendavis7628 more colors are tempting and seem easiee at first but I would encourage you to narrow it down and leverage color mixing. Unless it feels too overwhelming, which was how I felt when I started.
@@paintingandchocolate thank you for making the video. Here's the link th-cam.com/video/isuFeggbhfE/w-d-xo.html I'm looking forward to more watercolor pencil videos.
Would love to see you compare these to Faber Castell. I have both, and personally, I like the Faber Castell more, as I prefer the feel of them on paper as I colour, the colour range is bigger, and I find that they dissolve a bit better, and leave less lines behind on the paper that I use. However, these are still also very nice, and I wouldn't be without the 'Purpleish Red' and 'Light Olive' colours to supplement the FCs for floral paintings.
Im torn between completing my Caran Dache collection or the Albright Durer watercolors. I suppose when in doubt, i need to keep researching as open stock is not an option where i dwell.
Thank you! What do you mean? Stating all color names in the set? I didn't think of it honestly probably because usually my sets are a lot bigger. A 12 pencil set is good, usually I like at least 24 colors (but CD is pricey).
Colors are a lot stronger being ink based. In another video I compared inktense to Faber Castell Albrecht Dürer, this would give you a good idea since the AD compare to the Museum a lot imo.
Hi, preferences might vary, for me, out of the set I have, light cadmium red, dark ultramarine, gold cadmium yellow, brown, black, bright green. To have enough to go from to paint many things. Primaries, green for convenience, brown and black for dark shadows.
Hi, it's Arches 100%cotton cold press 300gsm paper. There was no coloring book in this video but in the description of this video you will find a kit.co link to all my supplies including coloring books 🙂
Yes, please: Compare these pencils with the Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer pencils. Which one should I buy? If these are much better, and worth it, I'll gladly pay more.
So, I have to come back here to see the colors for the twelve set, and the set up of the colors for a typical 12 set isn't good. What's the purpose of having 3 yellowish colors for a very small selection of colors? The yellow ochre should be burnt ochre instead and there's supposed to be skyic light blue color. Lack of white isn't a big deal, because white gouache is a better replacement. I would buy the landscape 20 instead if I had money soon.
People said that's because it's the best lightfastness among watercolor pencil products so that why it's expensive. But I don't know how we can prove that😂.
I would love these pencils but they are just too expensive for my pocket. I just use acrylics and my son's cheap water colours and cheap pencils lol. But I am greatful because at least I can create art with my crappy materials, there's probably so much talent out there that can't even draw because they have nothing, so I feel blessed

And will keep doing it they are so underrated. Thank you 🙂
"A golden snitch" I love it!!!! And this video is amazing and very informative, as they always are. Thank you.

A nice brand, I love the luminance too!
The sad thing about those stuff except for being expensive is that it is rare in my country.

80 colour set is not really 80 colors, but 76 plus 4 drawing pencils. But they recently extended matching Luminance line to 100, so there’s hope :)
