  • Don't drink and drive because if you do, you're part of the problem. It's okay to drink, stand in your bedroom and talk into a microphone. The Chevy Malibu is a car in which you can tell a black-guy joke. It's also a car for people who just want a car and that weird drink where they latch Corona bottle upside down to the glass at an angle. Corona Rita Margarita. Blegh.
    Everyone, man-up and lean to love Gin Martinis.
    My contacts itch.

    I'm a teacher posting from my husband's account, because if I posted from my account that I'm drinking wine and watching this instead of grading papers the parents who follow my G+ account will see and get me fired for moral turpitude. Your non sequitur about teachers was the truest thing I've ever heard. Except I'm too poor to own a Malibu so I bought a 2007 PT Cruiser from my mom. It's canary yellow. It serves as both a metaphor and as a punishment for my career choices.

    The modern Malibu is a car that people buy RIGHT when the new model comes out, then AGAIN when the next one comes out. It feels nice, new, at the time. Four years later it looks, drives, and feels like it was owned by baboons.

    • @raymondnewbill2748

    • @powermatt
      @powermatt 8 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      +alecjahn The "hates driving" assertion couldn't be more true. While Camry drivers just seem to neglect their cars, Malibu owners seem to actively try to destroy their cars.

    • @vortexflier
      @vortexflier 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +alecjahn As someone that lives in southeastern Michigan, I know exactly what you mean. most people that buy them and then get rid of them for the next model year leased them. more specifically they leased them through GM/Ford/Chrysler, because they or their spouse works for them. Of course they don't have a hands on car job like design, or engineering, they work in accounting and marketing, and don't even know half of the models the company makes because it has nothing to do with their work.

    • @TimJoseph08031990
      @TimJoseph08031990 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      What also sucks is that for the 2016 model, if you do have a teenager, you have to get the top-of-the line 2.0 Liter turbo engine trim level to get the so-called "report card tech" to monitor your teens driving. If Chey didn't spend their money on making 4G LTE as standard equipment on every trim level, they could have spent it on standard HID headlights and putting safety tech in every trim level. People can live without built-in 4G LTE in the car, because phones have them, portable hotspots have them, and now 4G LTE hotspot can be plugged into a 12 volt outlet.

    I never understood people who actually bought these base level midsize cars new. Sure, if you option up cars in this class, then they can be pretty nice, and even reasonably exciting in some cases. But in base form, they're just the dullest of the dull. It's slow, yet it doesn't get particularly notable fuel economy. It's bland, and by particularly well equipped, but it's also not particularly cheap, especially when you factor in the used market.
    Buying one of these cars is like going to a fancy restaurant and ordering a $30 peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Sure you probably won't hate it and it fills your stomach, but there's plenty of better things you could have spend your money on.

    • @thegreengrovecomedian
      @thegreengrovecomedian 8 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      +splewy Most of the "base" models are bought by rental fleets, then purchased used by people with bad credit

    • @MalikCarr
      @MalikCarr 8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      +Sean Haney This, or you just have a desperate or irrational desire for a new car no matter what - even if the car itself isn't anything to write home about. Frankly I don't understand this model year fetishism. You can get a base model economy car, or a top trim nice car that's a couple years old and "gently used" for probably about the same amount of fliff. Resale value of luxury trim and options plummets like a damn rock after a painfully short period of time.

    • @splewy
      @splewy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      MalikCarr
      I couldn't agree more. If you're gonna buy new, then get a car that is actually new. One with the latest features, tech, etc. If you can't afford one of those cars, buy used. Buying a stripped out, base level new car is one of the dumbest things you can do with your money. Like you said, there are so many better options in the used market.
      Five years ago I bought an 4 year old Acura TL with 44k miles and all the bells and whistles for less than the price of a base Honda Civic (also less than half the TL's original price). It has given me zero problems.
      The same thing applies to trucks too. I see lightly used, 2 year old, loaded King Ranch 4x4 F-150s selling for $35k every day, when a similar 2015 truck will set you back $52k.

    • @MalikCarr
      @MalikCarr 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +splewy And that TL is probably nicer than a Civic in every way, right? Hell if you really scrounged around you probably could have gotten one with under 40k on the odo too.

    • @splewy
      @splewy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      MalikCarr
      Oh yeah, way nicer. And I could have gotten one cheaper or with less miles, but I specifically wanted one with the rare 6-speed manual option.

      I dunno. Supposing the car is reliable and upkeep isn't much, I could see tons of people taking the car in as a part of the family, with the same brand loyalty Packard had back in the day. Not every one wants performance or luxury, and simply having a car that has no major faults and is competent is a nice stepping-stone to a full-sized Buick later on.
      I mean, sheesh, it was Detroit's inability to make a car exactly like this that handed the market to the Japanese. Nothing wrong with cheap, reliable transportation that is executed well.

      +quintessenceSL I feel like those people are incredibly simple minded and dumb to be frank. For instance, a fully loaded Malibu is over 30k. Yet for 30k you can buy a fully loaded Mazda6. Which gets better gas mileage, looks MUCH better and has almost no plastic inside. Its all leather, has way more goodies and when the road gets twisty the car is a lovely experience. Lots of feedback and feel for the driver, so why would ANYBODY buy the Malibu. Unless they are retarded and think that ANY new car is amazing.

    OMG I'm 55 bought a 13 Malibu ltz. I don't like diet Coke. I like martins. made with Russian vodkas. I like my 13 Malibu ltz that redlines at 7000 RPM. And drives out better than a Camry. and was about 5 k less with way more options. Loved the video.

      +Ted Roberts Yep. I bought a '14 Malibu LTZ in September in great condition for a helluva lot less than new. The car is 'fine' -- just the way I want it. It beats driving my F-150 just to run errands around town all week.

    this review is so accurate because before my aunt lost everything she had, she was working for Wachovia in Scranton, (I know own her house in East Stroudsburg and am thinking about contacting you) and in 2005 she ran her 1987 Ford Taurus into a snow bank. She sold it for 300 dollars and bought a 2004 Malibu. She was doing very well, making 80k a year in a manger's position. She was laid off when the Wachovia branch closed in Scranton? and she began to work for Walmart. She then crashed her Malibu into a wall going up 715 to get to 447. She resulted to my grandfather's 82 Volvo 240 wagon and, well her husband wasn't the best with her money. After a few years she sold it and was finally able to buy a 2002? Chevy Aveo. It wasn't glamorous but she drove it. Then winter came in 2012 and boom another snow bank. She sold the car back to the dealer and used the money to lease a new elantra. But it was when she went to SC for my grandmother's funeral that her husband bought a chevy colorado, and ugh. Her car was repo-ed and needless to say, after being stuck in there apartment which she got after she foreclosed twice, she left him, and scraped up 1700 to buy a 2003 Impala. She has no job because after she got into the same accident twice, she was a little messed up. But she moved in with her sister in South Carolina and works at a Publix. So she's kinda back where she started.

    I recently bought a 2016 Chevy Malibu (same body style, just slightly newer.) My last vehicle was a 2001 Ford Ranger, so this car feels like a HUGE upgrade. It's not a bad car, I'm 22, I finished my degree, and I'm about to be looking for a new job. I needed something reliable for the long haul. It's jam packed with plenty of features and even voice control. However, that 2.5L EcoTec isn't very fuel efficient at all! If I'm lucky if I get 19 MPG city and 28 MPG highway, right now I'm at 18.5 because I'm mainly city driving it!

    • @Coonotafoo
      @Coonotafoo ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I figure I might as well post an update. I mostly did both a combination of city and highway driving (2/3 highway) and the highest MPG I ever got was 23. And that was basically form grandmother driving it for an entire month. Most of the time I stayed around 22.5 MPG with typical driving. It wasn't just me, I know someone else that had basically the same car but a year older and it pretty much got the same MPG. That's pretty sad out of a 2.5L 4-cylinder. I've been working a decent job for awhile and have recently upgraded to something more fuel efficient and more practical overall.

    Regular Drunk Car Reviews! ALCOHOL EVEN MAKES A MALIBU INTERESTING.
    Like "V8s are for the men, V6s are for the girlfriend!", it's funny how my parent's generation react to certain configurations in cars. I remember when I was searching for a family beater to move lawnmowers and dogs around, and we looked at a V6 Mitsubishi Magna (Diamonte). My dad was all interested in it, until I mentioned front wheel drive... "Ahhh geez! I don't think we can have a front wheel drive... front wheel drive is bad, it's bad to maintain, front wheel drive is bad!"
    I don't think my father has ever owned a front wheel drive car. And he's had around 40 cars.
    Either have I, for that matter.

    I bought my '13 Malibu LTZ in early 2014, I love the car. It's comfy and rides smooth. Now, some export Malibu's came with a V6, which is what I have, and the fuel economy is so good, the performance is what you expect from a mid-size V6 sedan. I think if the '13-'15 came with the interior from the '17 it would sell like hot cakes (never mind that it actually sold out of showrooms every year). The Interior is like it's 1999 but with a touch screen and a lot of fake wood lmao.

      The Chevy SS is a re-badged Australian Supercar. Ever hear of the Holden Commodore? Fast and handles surprisingly well for a car with 4 doors. Pontiac started with the G8 but once Pontiac went under, Chevy took the torch. The biggest problem with the SS is it looks like a normal car. You could call it a sleeper, but it defeats the purpose of having a fast car of it looks like a normal rental car.

    • @PistNRods

      Well disregard the 100000mpg everyone can achieve by, in 99% of the case(the rest is by grandma the car), boasting. Malibu is a bigger car, it is more of a Superb-sized. dont forget 25mpg CITY. Not much more different than VW passats in US testings. Not sure about UK but Swedish Insginias(Malibus, really) have roughly the same mpg as the Superb.

    *I drove one of these from Enterprise actually and it was a pretty smooth riding car good for long trips but yeah not much power to speak of but i've never used so little gas on an 800 mile trip home to middle PA either before so i really can't complain and something you didn't get to see that impressed me was the blue lighted trim that gave off just enough light at night for you to be able to see pretty well in the front seats of the car without having to blind the driver with the map lights. i did like the little hide yer dope box behind the LCD for the radio, and i did think that little battery in the trunk was a neat idea until i had to sit stopped in traffic until the whole car just shut off and stayed off and i had to re-start the damn thing again to go anywhere once traffic started moving again. AND the driver's seat was a pain in the ass for a 6'5 360 pound man with back problems (me) to get in and out of at the time which are the very reasons i swore that even though i liked the car we would never own one. TO which my wife instantly declared "i want one!" OF FUCKNG COURSE! i bought her an 08 Pontiac Grand Prix in great condition for $2500 and told her to ride that rig a while and save up her money. mean time i went an bought myself an 06 Cadillac Escalade EXT so i could pull cars around on my car hauler, decked it out with 10 ply heavy duty All Terrain tires and customized the shit out of it. (my money WTF) but now she's changed her mind and would rather have one of these escalades too (Women!) She's still rocking the Grand Prix though and i haven't heard any of the "i want" out of her lately at all so maybe the Pontiac is enough for her for now* and Honestly i really did like the way the Enterprise Malibu handled and drove it just didn't have any balls is all it would move but you had to wind it up first. At least the Impala can be ordered with a 5.3L V8 still. much nicer option i'm sure.
