    Paid $8K in 2020 and worth every penny to me. Did 444-mile drive from Fairfax County VA to northern NJ and back yesterday, all of it on FSD Beta except 30 miles in a driving rainstorm. Drove all types of roads, curves, roundabouts - 5 errors total, maybe 8 slowdowns (pedal tap). Saved this 65+-yr-old body bigtime. IMO, FSD tech is the third personal tech revolution in my life, behind PCs and cell phones.

    I really don’t think these few little features and some of which are not flushed out (smart summon) is anywhere worth 6k. That’s 15-20% of the cars value for the standard models. I think 2500-3000 would be the absolute most they should charge for this. Cars have had auto park for free for so long, smart summon is not complete, so you’re basically paying 6k for lane changes/traffic lights.

    Watching videos on how well navigate on autopilot works along with the ability to have auto lane changes on is fantastic. It sealed the deal for me.
    I am trading my Kia Niro EV in for a Tesla this week and my Kia has lane keeping assist with adaptive cruise control. Works great but sometimes I miss exits or have no idea what lane I need to be in. I work in IT and the multitasking that happens sometimes in my car at least on highways definitely will benefit from any additional safety measures in place.
    Driving around town I’d much rather drive than the potential stress of the car not recognizing an idiot or emergency stop would have me worried. Plus if I’m driving around town, chances are it’s a very quick trip.
    Smart summon sounds great for a rainy day if it ever works with Tesla vision, hopefully we’ll see someday.

    I bought FSD for $10k when I ordered a MY in January just before the price increase to $12k. Had EAP been an option at that time I’m confident I would have went that route. However, after seeing the FSD Beta progress and expansion of the program to more people over the last 5-6 months, I’m glad I got FSD at the lower price. Now I just wish I could take delivery of my car soon!

    • @ChrisLeiter
      @ChrisLeiter ปีที่แล้ว

      the last few months have been a MASSIVE improvement in Beta - but it still does really stupid stuff from time to time. Had it completely stop the car in the middle of a traffic circle today, and it's one that FSD has taken me through hundreds of times before with zero issue as it's at the entrance to my neighborhood. Thought it was fluke so went back and tried again and ... nope. FSD doesn't like that traffic circle anymore ... FML. I have a couple videos that show how badly it handled unmarked roads on a loop I test on in the past, and just published one with a HUGE improvement on my last drive. But like I said, every once in a while, it just does the dumbest thing and for seemingly no reason.

  • @Gurule

    I was considering buying it. if I was planning on keeping the Y as my main tesla I would. but it would take so long for me to reach 6k just using the fsd subscription because I am able to just buy it every few months when I want the features. let's say you buy the subscription every other month. at 200 dollars it would take like 5 years for the subscription to reach the price of the package.
    I'm crossing my fingers for CT with offered FSD price though

    It was expected that this will land again as an option, as the EU/UN allows for hands-off driving on the highway etc. in the near future. So this feature will likely be Tesla's response, which they will try to get certified for that.
    Note that hands-off does not mean reading newspapers, in the contrary the driver will be actively monitored and only if the system is sure the driver pays attention hands-off is allowed.

      Lane change assist (LCA) is the only thing that is missing from standard autopilot. It is a very important, non trivial feature included free with most cars of this class with the exception of Tesla. They charge $6K to include this. I am selling my M3P with FSD. There is no reason to spend $15K for the possibility of getting the beta. I essentially never use FSD as it is so buggy. I also never use self parking or summon either as they are buggy. So I will buy the EAP for $6K.

  • @codemonkey2k5
    @codemonkey2k5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Bought it and yeah, it's expensive but perhaps this might help justify the cost.
    First of all, with the beta of FSD or when FSD is publicly released I feel it is very much worth the cost.
    But until then, the extra cost is a guarantee that includes any needed hardware changes/upgrades that are required to utilize FSD. So it's kind of a guarantee that you will always have the latest hardware for free until it's actually full self-driving. Also, if you actually want the functionality of FSD as I do, it makes much more sense to buy it now rather than wait until it is far more expensive than now.
    Just my 10 cents.

      FSD is a total joke and a total waste of money. I paid $5k for it and wish I didn’t. Now it’s $12k. I’m sure it will go up again without any new features added again. I had the beta for 8 months before being erroneously removed from it due to 3 BS strikes. The car literally tried to kill me dozens of times. Imagine if the detection software worked better than the beta itself. Because if I wasn’t paying attention to beta, I’d likely be dead at least a dozen times over.

    4:46 I drive a 2021 model 3 Performance w/FSD, and recently drove a Long Range via Turo for about a week while we were out of town. If I were to do it again, I'd get the Long Range w/FSD (or you can just get the EAP if the extra $6k is too much) before I'd get the performance again. Off the line? Big difference - the 0-60 in this thing is genuinely shocking. Once you're moving though? Almost no difference between the LR and the Performance. Sure, handles a bit better. I have had EAP and FSD on the car since the original purchase of the car. Like Chris, I have watched the evolution of the software. There have been a lot of changes “under the hood” that have gone a long way to improve the driving experience. On the highway, monitoring traffic is about the only requirement on long trips and in stop and go traffic, it’s great. All other functions are pretty much flawless. NOAP is a game changer driving through new cities where signage can be confusing for someone new to the area. Beta drove us through a congested downtown area yesterday evening where we had never been before. It wasn’t perfect, but sure made navigation much easier. One of my passengers didn’t even realize the car was doing the driving for most of the trip.
    I have been using this ADAS for so long and trust it so much (even with its flaws) I feel less comfortable driving manually.

    I rented a performance model 3 and a FSD LR for a week. The FSD was cool but the performance was a lot more fun and felt better to drive imo. Iv been trying to decide between the two for a month now. I very rarely drive more than 200 miles a day and I dont plan on taking road trips anytime soon, so for me the performance just equals a bit more money for a lot more fun. But when I hear almost everyone saying its not worth it, its got me second guessing why not?

      I own a '21 Performance 3 with FSD (and Beta) and recently rented a LR with FSD (Not Beta) on Turo when I went on vacation.
      IMO? The LR is the better buy. Yes, the Performance is MUCH quicker off the line - but once you're moving, it's not that much of a difference. Yes, it has better brakes and suspension. But I use those FAR less than I do FSD which I literally use daily. Are there instances where I drive some backroads and enjoy the fact that I have a nicely setup car? Sure. But if I were to do it again, I'd get the LR w/FSD and enjoy the fact that the LR has a much better range, is pretty damn quick in its own right, and just get some better wheels for the cost difference.

    The enhanced autopilot costs €3800 here in The Netherlands. I don't think it's worth it with the limits it has here. Auto lane change requires bothwaiting for the car to prompt you to change lanes, then turning on your indictator manually then putting enough torque on the wheel. You have a limited time to do this or it fails. Also it tends to wait to long to change lanes meaning you get stuck behind slow trucks, requiring you to take over to pass manually. So, it's still a mostly manual process with too many issues.

    I have FSD Beta which is Navigate on Autopilot over city streets. It's a preview of what full autonomy will be like as improvements continue to roll out the remainder of this year and next. If you'd like to be an early owner of a fully autonomous car, purchasing FSD now for $12,000 is a wise decision, in my opinion, and the only game in town. It will never be cheaper. I included FSD on my Model 3 in 2018 for about half that price when it was in the early stages of development. I do not regret it. I also purchased FSD for my Model Y for $10K earlier this year. When you buy FSD today you're buying a subscription for software updates that will, at some point, allow your Tesla to drive itself, on its own, without human supervision. Just imagine! Many don't believe that's ever going to be possible. Others believe it's decades away. I think it will be here in one or two years, and want in. It may not seem so today, but when Tesla achieves Level 4 autonomy, those who bought FSD for $12K will wonder how anyone thought it was overpriced.

Stops for red lights and stop signs. It's monitoring everything. Phantom braking? Nav issues unprotected left issues? Am I still responsible? Yes. But it's getting better and once they get to releasing robotaxi it's going to be much more expensive. 6k over the typical ownership imho isn't that bad. If you can afford an S/X sure. For more price sensitive, I'd rather have FSD than performance, big wheels, special color, etc. But everyone has to make their own priorities. Many of my trips are without disengagement/intervention. On top of that, Basic Autopilot was split away from EAP and forced to be included with the car. This IS NOT free. Base prices of the cars went up by $2k-$3k when they did this.
    So now you’re paying $6k on top of the basic autopilot premium for a package that is feature complete and not expected to have major updates. Only reason it would make sense is if you’re 100% sure that you’re buying FSD in the future and want to lock in half the current price.

    If EAP were about $1k I could probably go for it.

    EAP for $6k is overpriced. Only feature worthy of daily use is auto lane change for $1-2k at most. The rest are gimmicks

    i never understood how anyone could buy fsd in the last few years (unless you're rich and wanted to help the cause)...and now it's crazy expensive so forget it. by the time they crack fsd and then go through the years of regulatory approval so that you can recoup your investment...your car will be aged....and you don't buy it for life...just for the one vehicle...so that's dumb.
