Drove to Furnace Creek/Bad Water in 2019 in a rental Dodge mini-van. Temperatures hit 122F. The rental was almost overheating on the drive out so we had drive around 40mph AC off windows down. On the down hill the brakes caused a wicked vibration that went away after temperatures drop back below 110F. Had the same reaction you did when we got to the first gas station outside of Death Valley.

The raven Model X made significant imporvements in thermal and cooling solution! also Model 3/Y handle extreme weather much better too due to them having more range 310+ and better cooling/ heating systems.

Most car manufacturers actually test cars in DV, Phoenix area, or Middle East in the Summer to test cooling system, and A/C performance. Newer, and well maintained cars have no issues there even when it's 125 or warmer. Needles, California and Bullhead City, AZ are very close to DV temps in Summer, and people live there with no problem

128 Deg. is not excessive here. In summer it is commonly 115 - 118 in the shade daily with nights in the 95 degree range. My biggest question is how a Tesla would work in my area - I really want one but fear the battery will both have daily temperature issues and the life of the battery will be very negatively effected. A/C is essential both summer and often in the winter also. I have seen some Teslas, but not many.

It will be interesting to see how the new Octovalve and Compressor combo handles heat like this.
The Rivian R1T did exceptionally well towing that 30ft 11,000 pound trailer on the Davis Dam test during 118f temperatures over 11.4 miles and 2,950 ft elevation rise.
Though there is more info to be released like range reduction details, the bar has been set for the Cybertruck to match now :)
Hopefully tomorrow on Battery Day we will get some treats of informations provided to us all

    • @OniMetsuki
      @OniMetsuki ปีที่แล้ว

@@stevenwatson3496 Yup, diesel is the way to go for now if you need longer range or charging times are an issue.
Battery energy density is ramping up fast and next years batteries will be able to charge to 80% in 5mins. Cheaper tech than most of today's too.
Towing eats about 50% range, an aero trailer is key for electric and overall towing efficiency, but once range is 700 to 1000km electric will be the way to go.
Cars already have that range today. Trucks next year+

    • @stevenwatson3496

@@OniMetsuki not sure I would say they are going to be better that soon. Here in texas EV’s are not taking the heat well and most of the state has been advised not to charge between 3pm-8pm due to stress on the grid. These are fairly new. Many more problems will surface I’m sure.

That very much seems like a manufacturing issue. The car's electronics should be made to withstand those temperatures. 150 isn't a great on electronics but it shouldn't course failure. My guess is something is getting very hot underneath, that the desert heat is adding to and coursing premature failure, or it's failing due to insufficient materials. The battery could definitely be suffering too if it lacks in cooling capacity as Lithium is sensitive to temperature.

The Model Y has a heat pump designed for this kind of stuff I would be interested to see how much of a difference it makes.

Doesn't make difference in hot weather. AC works on heat exchange principal as well.

Wait, so your almost out of charge, and you decide to floor it and waste more energy that you coulda used to get to the charger.. if you ended up stranded you’d have no one to blame but yourself

We went on a roadtrip as tourists through death valley at 118-120 degeee fahrenheit in 2018 with a rental Model3 LR RWD... no issues at all. We have driven a lot of Tesla back here in Sweden.
You seem inexperienced with Tesla-roadtrips and you still seem to have a lot of range anxiety... surprised me since you have been doing Tesla content for quite a while.
Learn to use the energy graph and calculate range, you definitely won't be this worried.
We drive in -22° fahrenheit in the winter and we are never worried about range anxiety.

The thing is you would have had a lot more battery left if you weren’t driving like 20 mph over the limit according to the sign shown in the cars dash
