    Tesla sells a Full Self Diving Package for $8000 for all of their cars, and the main feature of this package is Navigate on Autopilot, which Tesla says includes
    “automatic Driving from Highway on-ramp to off-ramp including interchanges and overtaking slower cars”. So essentially, once I get on the freeway, the car should be able to drive me all the way until my exit, no matter where I route it.
    So, I decided to put Autopilot to the ultimate test, and route myself through some of the craziest freeway interchanges in Los Angeles, during rush hour.
    I started by routing myself from the 210 over to USC which required me to take the 210. 605, 10, 101, and 110. Then I did a bunch more crazy interchanges downtown and out in Glendale, and we had some success, and some failures from Autopilot. The video will be a little out of order since it took a bit to really get into the heat of traffic, but I’ll be sure to let you know everything that’s going on.
    For the purposes of the test, I let the software determine everything, and had Lane change confirmations turned off. So if I’m hanging out in the passing lane, or doing any stupid driving maneuvers, it’s the software okay….not me! Normally I would take over in these scenarios but I wanted to see what the car would do for this video.
    Also for all of you Tesla nerds out there, I’m on software version 2020.28.6 in the Model Y with Hardware 3.0, speed based lane changes are on Average, and my following distance is set to 1. . Alright lets get into it.
    For today’s test, I’m driving in my Tesla Model Y, and using Full Self Driving, or FSD with Navigate on Autopilot with Lane Change Confirmations turned off. I try lots of crazy freeway interchanges, merges, and intersections all throughout downtown Los Angeles during rush hour, and see how Autopilot can handle in LA Traffic. LA Traffic Autopilot.
    You’ll see times when Autopilot does a great merge, or a terrible merge, as well as some cases of the Model Y doing phantom braking. You’ll get to see just how non-courteous LA drivers are, and see how angry they can be from time to time. I’m glad it wasn’t an accident in one of those “Autopilot Accident” videos, and overall I’m glad that in general, Autopilot seems to do incredibly well.
    Tesla’s Full Self Driving package includes:
    Auto Lane Change
    Autopark
    Navigate on Autopilot
    Recognize and Respond to Traffic Lights and Stop Signs
    Summon
    And soon: Autosteer on City Streets.
    #tesla #modely #teslamodely #teslaautopilot #autopilot #selfdrivingcars
    We saw some pretty big extremes from Autopilot today putting it through some really tough circumstances with crazy freeway onramps, merges, interchanges, and lane changes.=. Sometimes it did a really great job and did no better or worse than I would have done, but sometimes it just sat there and waited for a gap and did a really poor job.
    Overall, really exciting technology, and I’m super excited to see what the future holds. Also just to reiterate, I don’t use it to this extent every time I drive. ‘d typically take over much sooner in all of the times it failed throughout this video.

    Watching Americans drive on the highway in the US always gives me anxiety. I'm from Germany and there are strict laws which mandate you to always stay in the furthest right lane unless you need to overtake someone. You are also absolutely not allowed to ever overtake anyone on the right. This makes driving really smooth and it feels like a perfect choreographed dance between all vehicles (Obviously we have bad drivers, too, but it feels like those are 95% fewer than in America). Those rules are obviously in part due to the fact that we don't have speed limits on many sections and therefore the left lane usually has people going 150-200 mph. But seeing people just weave in and out, overtake left and right, sit in the left lane while going slow is just pure madness to me. I'm not sure if Teslas Autopilot in Europe has some kind of different software to follow these rules, but if it doesn't, it's absolutely not usable on the german highway since it is vital to for example move to the right when someone comes up to you from behind at max speed and you need to anticipate this already when the car is hundreds of meters away.
    Sorry for my messed up english, I hope you guys get what I'm trying to say.

    • @VoxelLoop
      @VoxelLoop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I could be wrong, but last time I checked the US driving test is mainly an exam, not including much actual road experience. This surely doesn't help that case, especially considering every other road user there is on their phone. In Europe thankfully very few people use their phones whilst driving now, there's really heavy fines for it. Like you said too, we don't undertake either, if someone tries to undertake it upsets everyone else on the road. :)

    • @VoxelLoop
      @VoxelLoop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      In regards to Tesla Autopilot in Europe, yeah, it's different. It won't undertake anyone, if you're about to undertake them they'll show up as a darkened car on the display which means the car is following them, in this case, it'll just match their speed and give you space to move in behind them. When I visited France it was interesting because a lot of people there sat in the middle lane but would be going slower than the right-hand lane, causing Autopilot to brake quite hard to avoid undertaking them.

    • @arningad
      @arningad 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Germany has an excellent Autobahn System. In the US, if there are more than two lanes, I have no problem passing someone on the right and no problem being passed on the right. And even on two lanes, if someone is creeping in the left lane, you have no alternative than to pass on the right.

    • @VoxelLoop
      @VoxelLoop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@arningad In Europe it's extremely frowned upon to pass on the right so we just sit in the left lane behind someone until they move. Some people indicate behind them and flash their highbeam to get them to move out of the lane.
      Passing on the right is a bit scary for us because it's usually pretty rare, I guess we don't expect it. :)

    Glad you did the test so people can understand the capabilities of the platform. Its there to assist you but definitely not ready for prime time.
    Sometimes AP works phenomenally and other days it does some dumb shit. If anything take home message is that the software will releave some of the stree but one should always pay attention.

Hope that gets fixed in an update later on!

    @5:30 to make sure you don't kick yourself out of auto pilot mode, instead of applying pressure on the steering wheel, just scroll the volume or the speed limit roller on the steering wheel up/ down for a second. It does the trick. I recently drove over 800km while doing that on auto pilot (not FSD) on a really long road trip.

    Thanks for this video. I recently upgraded to Fsd. Took a drive with my wife on NoA. She definitely was not happy with the car not being able to anticipate other vehicles. Similar to you a truck had it’s indicator on trying to change lanes and my car keep going the speed and didn’t slow until it realized the truck had crossed the dotted line. Also there is a couple ramps where my lane ends and joins another lane from a different ramp and my car rides the lane all the way till the end then just crosses over with no indication. I definitely think mapping is a problem for Fsd and with that approved it would solve a lot of the headaches of it

    16:00 @Ryan Shaw My guess is that it sees the traffic lights on top of the overpass. Glad you pointed out the phantom braking issue because I'm thinking of getting a Model Y but have been wondering about the phantom braking.

    • @mikemccarthy1638
      @mikemccarthy1638 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Terranwolf - None of the phantom braking (PB) examples Ryan talked about were real head-bobbers (extreme braking to avoid metal-to-metal).
      And by the time you’d get a Y (since you haven’t ordered one yet), AI will be much better (PB going on then will be about hard-scape, not some mythical red light at 10:00 high...) Also, as many other comments mentioned, intense rush-hour FSD calls for “Mad Max” mode (shudda ben called, “Intense Mode” - Elon needs to get a li’l more Sirius about traffic safety, esp. when working w/ Germany).
      As for what was going on w/ Ryan, it’s psychology: E.g., “Phantom braking is what you do when I’m riding shotgun and look up after you braked - and DON’T see anything...” That’s what Ryan’s experiencing w/ the majority of the PB cases in the video, cuz he’s multitasking to make this video.
      Look at his eyes when he’s narrating - he’s as distracted as if he was on a call w/ his wife who has to go to school again cuz Harold hit a kid for laughing at his name - you’ll see him being pulled back to ea. braking instance he wasn’t paying direct attention to.
      In industrial work situations, the company safety/workers comp guy wouldn’t let him continue doing these videos w/o assistance (FSD or not).

    That first slow down with that truck behind you was actually good.... You keep your distance in traffic... That's how you lol traffic jams... I cruise like that in traffic and eventually everyone else notices "hey he's not hitting his brakes every 5 seconds" lol

    Ryan - excellent video. Still a way to go until we have true FSD, but videos like yours provide valuable insight to the AI folks at Tesla. • @stookalacka4577
    @stookalacka4577 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why the phantom breaking happened - The traffic light was on up and to the left there. On the bridge. You can see the lights on the screen actually resemble where the lights are (look in the top left of the wide view). It just didn't realize that the traffic light was above it, not in front of it, for a second.

    No doubt, LA's traffic is the ultimate test of any self driving system. When Tesla's Autopilot and FSD can pass LA's traffic test then it will be ready for deployment everywhere in the U.S.

      Congested traffic is just one type of hazardous driving. It also needs to prove itself in bad weather conditions such as snow-packed roads, blizzards, and high winds; on poorly-maintained roads with potholes; on lanes shared with bicycles, and suburban streets where pedestrians are crossing or children playing.

    "The road marking are really terrible in LA" - then calling Autopilot is just totally miss-leading, its an auto/driver assist facility that may be the best auto/driver assist on the market but it is years away from being anything close to autonomous driving. Poor road marking, hazards, poor weather, emergency vehicles, road works, broken down vehicles are common everyday problems, poor road markings are probably among the easiest hazard to cater for.

    Love your video! The title says Tesla Autopilot, but you're actually using full self driving, correct? I wonder why it's not mentioned in the title. LA freeway driving is definitely one of the ultimate tests on FSD. Would you share what setting you had for following distance in Autopilot as well as the auto lane change mode (mild? mad max?) Different settings could have caused different behaviors in traffic. My Model Y has FSD also, but living in northern CA won't give me that many chances to do such tests on FSD. Besides, I don't have your bravery either. :-)
