I adopted a salvage title 2008 Prius! Mine is red and her name is Emily. We just hit 300,000 km :D one of the big cost savings is brakes, since regen means they aren’t used nearly as much as non hybrid cars. I also love how comfortable they drive, and how well they do in snow, surprisingly. Old cars I’ve had are 4Runner, Land Cruiser, Tacoma, Toyota Truck before they made Tacoma’s, and two Subaru outback’s.

You'll end up replacing the rear brake pads and rotors because they rust pitted and wore out the pads due to lack of use :)
The grief counseling got me, lol. I was driving a 14-year-old Rav 4 and the adjustment to the car was painful but I do love my Prius.

I concur. I bought a 2005 Prius last year with 254k miles (way more than I would have considered)! However, both batteries had been replaced within the last year, the car ran smooth so for the price of 2500, I said yes. It’s been great, drives great- people have commented how quiet & smooth it rides. Initially I replaced the 4 tires (worth it), had a tune up for baseline, and recently had the inverter pump go out. Not counting gas, I’m about $4500 invested. Would do it again.

I own a 2012 Prius with 192000 miles, bought it at 143000 in 2016 for $8800, $10000 after taxes. It runs great just oil changes every 5000 to 10000 miles. I average 50-65 mpg city and highway. Average 400-500 miles per 10 gallon tank of gas all with a solar sunroof 🚙

@@planetwalker798 😳 Wow 400 miles on a tank that is good. I let it get down to one bar for gas for sure then I fill up. The solar roof is to keep the inside of the Prius cool during hot days. It blows air inside the car when it’s parked automatically. Also the the sunroof attached to the solar roof opens up as a giant glass panel and makes the car look sporty. Mine is a white Prius with black stock wheels and full window tint all around the car.

As for mileage, right now 220 miles at half a tank and often better -glide, coast and not a lead foot! Since it’s a Prius, I like the challenge of getting the best I can (price of gas another incentive).

Ahhh the extra costs items. Killed me at NPR membership. I valet park cars and almost always the Prius clients have news radio/NPR on. I have a Toyota Sequoia and feel I need a National/Regional Park membership 😅

Yep, there is definitely a Prius/NPR/organic food/bicycle demographic crossover.
NPR is the only station at least in my market that consistently accepts and promotes science. No surprise to hear a lot of Prius drivers would have it in their presets. Willingness to accept/act on science + frugality = Prius

@@wshelby83 yes! it uses a combination of gas + electricity, hence the hybrid name! so ultimately you are using a lot less gas than you would a non-hybrid vehicle. i'm always amazed at how far only one tank of gas can get me.

In my country(Cambodia), people love prius. Prius are everywhere here, I got myself a 2005 prius and i love it. I drove to work around 30km per day and i spent around 50$ for gasoline. 1L=1.04$ or 1.06$. I can save alot of money from prius and repair price i might say it's affordable. Love from Cambodia 🇰🇭
50-55 mpg in city, 10 gal gas tank, should be around 500 miles. If you are getting 200-300 miles then you are getting only 20-30 mpg in your use case.

For a normal person yes! I just have such a short commute that my gas engine is almost always on and I’m never on the highway. 550 miles is more accurate for a normal driver though, you’re right!

I have seen several videos from mechanics regarding the 2010 to 2015 Prius head gasket. It seems they don't recommend buying those years because the head gasket will need to be replaced. I was thinking about replacing my 2007 Prius with a newer one, but those videos made me rethink that. I am going to do some body work to my 07 rather than invest in another newer one. Present mileage is 217K.

I have three of these Gen 2's. I don't need three, but I have three!! I keep finding low mileage versions and I feel compelled to buy them. My last one was a 2005 with 25K on the clock!! Some old lady drove it to church and the grocery store. I had to buy it and drove to San Jose to get it. These are marvelous cars...👍
LOL! Awesome video, ridiculously relevant. I own a 2010 Prius as my daily. I donate to KEXP radio, drink carbonated water and listen to NPR. The fuel savings have been really serious though given that fuel is usually ~$1.40 CAD / litre here, and as far as a useful commuter goes, it's great!
Recently bought a '09 Prius with 246,000 miles on it. I put a couple thousand dollars into it getting it right. One place that turned out to be very nice is the junkyard. You go pull your own parts from the junked cars, and the parts are SO cheap. I got a rear right tail light, a new antenna assembly, the cargo pull out cover, a spare tire, a middle armrest fabric cover, some fuel injectors, a couple pieces of door trim, a rear spoiler, and a lot of fuses and relays. All of that junk was around $120.
How is it running now?

In theory if you buy a 200 000km car the petrol engine has only done about 160 000 km assuming the electric motor has been doing 40 per cent of the driving. Also alot of the petrol engine has been used to generate electricity for battery storage at a lower rev range, meaning the petrol engine has never worked hard . A new way at looking at the mechanics of a hybrid.
After 5 years with an '05 with 233K miles, I like mine well enough to spring for a full set of KYB struts with springs and DOT certified headlights totaling $700. Makes an old guy feel flush enough to send big bux to Doctors Without Borders. You'll like the feeling.
I put wheels off of a Subaru Outback on mine. Not only do they look good, now mine is all wheel drive!

That's not a bad price for such low miles. Take it to a Toyota dealer and get it checked out first just to be on the safe side.
2005 Prius purchased in 07 with 14k miles on it. Oct 2021 it has 193K miles. It had front end collision and was repaired when I purchased for 14K$. Georgia state inspection due to salvage title for 125$. Throttle body replacement at dealer in 2012 for 1400$ but it may have been failing since purchase. Spark plugs at 120k miles for 20$. Traction battery replacement in 2017 for 2800$ but sold used one for 1000$ to a friend and turned in their old battery for the core. Win Win. Struts on trunk for 45$. Coolant inverter pump at 190k for 30$ amazon part (taking a chance on a cheap one). Radiator fan has started making noises and I ordered one for 110$ when it completely fails. No brake replacement yet because friction brakes do not engage until less than 8 MPH. 2 brake inspections and no issues. I change the transmission fluid with synthetic every 65K miles. Change oil and filter with fully synthetic and high micron filter every 5K miles. Coolant has been replaced two times with toyota brand lifetime coolant diy. The only thing that was not DIY was the throttle body because it need to be reprogrammed. I am very happy overall. My mileage has only been as good as 45 MPG. I am still very happy overall and do not plan on ever selling it. I believe I am getting my money's worth.

I have the 07 Prius. I bought mine with 67k miles and for $5,500. I average 43.5 mpg after 250 miles on the screen hits. It's great. I pulled off the hubcaps and the rims look aftermarket! My insurance is $35. I need to update that this weekend. I had a wheel bearing go out and that hit for around $400. Currently my car has 170k miles and I'm hoping I don't buy another car for 5-10 years! I'd buy another Prius asap. I came to the Prius from a v8 Mustang.. I just needed to slow down in life and focus and this change really helped

$35 for insurance!! We are being ripped off in Canada (not including Quebec where they have a cheaper car insurance as well)...the cheapest insurance I could get for a Prius was $80 (us $). With about €100-120 I can pay full year worth of insurance in Europe...at this pace of being ripped... Canadians might start migrating elsewhere

I’m looking to purchase a Toyota Prius for full time Uber driving and have been going back and forth between getting a Prius that’s 10+ years old with just over 100,000 miles in the $9-12k price range , a 2011 Toyota Camry with 111,000 miles that’s $9k and a 2013 Toyota Corolla with 72,000 miles that’s $12k. All of the “more affordable” Prius I’ve found on Carfax have been 10 years or older due to the battery of most Prius only lasting 10 years. I’m curious to know if you’ve got your Prius battery tested and how much battery/fuel cell is left in your Prius battery? Also what’s your preference between the used cars I mentioned above versus the Prius? Anyone with expertise on these vehicles please chip in!
😀I updated my prius 2007 into plug-in hybrid with the latest 20 kWh Nissan Leaf batteries. It's still running strong after 17 years! Incredible! Best car ever !
Bought a 140kmiles, 2007 Prius a couple days ago. It had one owner and costed near 5.5k but I bargained it down to 4.2k before some fees and taxes. So far I drove it back home from the buyers location which was a little over 200miles and it ran pretty smooth. It used exactly half a tank of gas !
I have 2008 model prius .as used in taxi trade for 8 years and its current mileages are 385000 and it's still smoothly going on . Regular servicing by myself not from Toyota dealership 😄.

2013 Prius owner with 145k miles. Don't forget to make sure your EGR system has been cleaned of carbon build up, and if it's misfiring and making clunking noises on a cold start, have it checked for bad head gasket, and change it before it blows a piston.

It has a 12-gallon bladder tank. At 45 MPG, you can get 500 before you hit the blinking pip on the gas gauge.

I bought a Toyota IQ a good while back. The car was around $14k brand new and got over 40mpg. They had to understate the gas mileage to keep the car from competing against the Prius. For the cost and fuel economy, the IQ was the better choice. All my coworkers gave me crap about it though. The fuel savings would literally pay for the entire car payment at the time. I ended up giving it to my daughter though after 6 months and then bought her a new one again after she totaled it.
You hit the nail on the head regarding the grief counseling coming from a big dodge diesel, I'm not sure I can own a Prius.
wait til your brake actuator goes out (2to 3k) or the head gasket goes out (2k)or your dash cluster goes out (2k) or the hybrid battery goes out (2to3k) all common problems around the 200k mile range.
Brilliant video. I have a 2012 Toyota Auris Hybrid with the 1.8 engine, which is basically a Prius underneath. It's a fantastic car. Tax is cheap, and it's a lot cheaper to fill up completely than a normal car. In this wintery cold weather, I get an average of 58 to 65 mpg UK. I get much more mpg in the summer though. About 68 to 79 mpg in the warmer months. I did get a quick drive in my friend's older 2004 Nissan Almera, and I found it very hard to go back to a normal gear-shifting car. I nearly stalled the car a few times. I would never go back to a normal ICE car at this stage.

Between 140K-160K miles, my 2007 Prius cost over $6500 in parts just to keep it on the road. As great as the mpg’s are, the hybrid system components are so expensive to replace that it practically cancels out the fuel savings compared to a traditional ICE powertrain. If you’re not mechanically inclined to save thousands of dollars with DIY repairs, then *DEFINITELY* avoid a high mileage Prius. Aside from the catalytic converter and tires, the parts below were installed myself:
- $3,300 genuine catalytic converter (required by law in my state)
- $1200 genuine ABS actuator
- $330 MillerCat stainless steel catalytic converter anti-theft shield
- $120 genuine inverter coolant pump
- $290 genuine front end brakes/rotors
- $40 aftermarket HID ballast
- $300 KYB front end strut assemblies
- $200 genuine front end sway bar end links
- $60 genuine transmission fluid
- $100 four oil changes (Costco brand full synthetic oil, genuine filter)
- $60 four genuine engine air filter replacements
- $460 set of Michelin X-Tour tires
The HV Battery Pack, ABS actuator, and catalytic converter are the “big three” expensive repairs. On Gen2’s these go bad every 100K-150K miles. If you’re buying a high mileage Prius, make sure the previous owner replaced at least 1-2 of these three parts fairly recently.

Bought a 2008 for $3,200 at 98,000 miles but had to replace the big battery with a refurbished one for $1000 at around 110,000 miles and will be changing the inverter water pump for about $100 real soon.
I have 2007 10 gallon tank gets approximately 450 miles per tank using 8 1/2 gallons driving 75 /80 miles per hour i don't baby it i just drive it like the other cars I've had I've had it 3 years i had to replace windshield wiper blades and 12 volt battery that's it other then oil changes air filter very cheap car to operate and maintain. It saves me money 💰.
Excellent and funny video. My son and I have 3 2007 Prius. One thing worth mentioning is the hybrid batterys can have cells go out approaching 200k miles. My son has gotten good at detecting and replacing the bad cells for about $60 per cell. We have had to replace the brake modulator on two of them as well. Still not bad considering the gas savings. I am a 79 year old car guy and this is the best car I have ever owned.

I understand. Though mine were/are NOT high miles. The first (2009 1.5 gen2 in lagoon blue (dark) had 8500mls on the clock. Now 48000. It has so impressed me (ie NOTHING has gone wrong), that I bought another (1.8gen 3) was 29000 in 2019 now 45000. I had cruise fitted, which makes a HUGE difference on long runs. MPG for the gen 2 has year average of 50mpg with the gen 3 at 62mpg (all seasons). on summer runs the gen2 does 60mpg while the gen 3 does 67mpg. AND never breaks down.
hi elliott i am coming over from hoovies garage. i bought a 2007 prius with 210000 miles for 1900 bucks. i had to change the hid bulbs which are expensive. and the ac blower for 37 bucks. other then that it runs great. big fan.

You will really never regret it. I made a 100 mile per day round trip for 16 years and only got gas about once every 4 days. The American made tank I had before that had to be filled every other day.

I bought a 2007 Prius in 2021 with 163,000 miles for $6,600 after tax. In my 32 months of ownership, all of my expenses (maintenance, non-routine maintenance, gas, insurance, annual registration, car washes, and road tolls) have averaged out to $362/month. That total includes $3,500 I spent on a brand new hybrid battery pack just this month at 198,000 miles. In total, I've spent about $18,180 on transportation since I've owned the Prius. Had I bought a car for $18,180 and paid it off in 32 months, my monthly cost on the payment alone (not including interest) would have been $568. Buying high mileage cars can be a gamble, but in my case it has been worth it.
Yeah...my antenna broke through many a car wash as well because the damn thing wasnt removable. And my trunk button broke. And my trunk opens slow and tough like a vampires coffin. I got quite the fixer upper on my hands.

a couple of things about 2nd gen Prius problems. First the capacitor in the dash. It's not big enough and at some point it will go out and need to be replaced. It's not hard and i did mine myself. Second is the rear door latch. also a DIY project and rather easy. The third is the head lights. The ballast like to crap out on these cars and you have to buy them as an assembly which sucks.
My car has over 200k on the original battery and doesn't use oil. Great car.
Why in the hell would you replace the ballasts when you can bypass them and install LED's?? As a bonus the headlights are 100 times better.🤷🤦
@@whatsit2ya247 two reasons really. First, I prefer OEM if I can get it. It's been tested to work with the car and therefore I'm assured that it works. (As an example, Chrysler O2 sensors. If you don't get an OEM part the sensor will NOT work. The tolerances are off on the sensor) Second, I have better things to do with my life than rewire my lights. I don't know about you but i have enough crap on my plate without making extra work. You do you though. If changing over to LED works for you go for it.
As an extra point, I have no problems with the original lights. I'm not trying to blind people on the road, potentially causing an wreck just because i want to see the asshole on a deer at two miles.

Why not tell me how you really feel?😂 you don't really have to re-wire anything, it's easier and way cheaper than replacing the HID unit, doesn't blind anyone and I personally would rather see the road in front of me unlike those useless OEM lights. I've been an Auto body tech for 30yrs and I usually don't recommend aftermarket parts but this is one of those exceptions. But it sounds like you're the expert here 🤷

Guncannon good question! I’ve heard of original batteries lasting as long as 400,000 miles. But if they do need to be replaced, you’re looking at about $1,000 for a refurbished battery or $2,000 for an OEM battery from Toyota. But both can usually be had with a warranty.
@@ElliottAlvis Battery life was my concern as well, because otherwise I'd never hesitate to buy an old Toyota that was in good condition. I have heard higher figures mentioned with regard to replacing battery packs--and frankly, if one battery is gone, you might as well replace the whole battery pack, since you're living on borrowed time with the remaining batteries. Or have I been watching too much of Scotty Kilmer?

Then you should talk about possible expenses down the road...Aka the battery needing replaced and I'm talking the battery for the hybrid electric motor... Otherwise anyone could say I bought a used vehicle of any make and model and have owned it for 6mths and haven't had any problems...So go out and buy 1..Uhm ok and since you went to the casino and won we all will 2 right 😉 lol
I had one as a company car for awhile. Over 330,000 on a Gen II model, still the original battery.
Unless you are driving a Corolla or other Toyota, you won't likely see those miles from a conventional car. Consider that the Prius really only has half of the miles on it-- as at least half the time it's not running the gas engine.
One more battery comment. There’s a TH-camr who is Toyota master technician (channel name escapes me right now) who in one video stated that most of the cases of battery issues he had seen had to do with the batteries overheating, usually the result of the owner unwittingly cutting off air circulation vents within the passenger compartment. If I bought a Prius I would talk to an experienced service manager when taking delivery to make sure I never made that mistake.
I have the same model only 2005, it is a 6.7 gallon gas tank. And mileage is more like 40 now after 295k miles. I had the AC go out and needed to be totally replaced when living in swampy southern Maryland. The dealership also talked me into a battery swap at around the same time. I think I got ripped off, didn't trust the dealership at all. Anyway, those were the only issues in the last 16 years and intend on keeping the car forever.

We just brought three high mileage prius's here in NZ (Ex taxi cabs) We film stuff for a business here. They all have around 300,000 miles on them. Our fuel prices have skyrocketed to nearly $12 (nzd) per gallon ! We were using the Toyota landcruisers as work vehicles but while the fuel prices are silly here we can use the prius's as around town commuters and the big 4x4's when we head up to film the back country. We certainly have learnt to pack our film gear minimally in the prius but its functional. I laughed at the grief counselling I can say its quite a change from a big 4x4 to a little prius haha great vid !
In love with my Generation 2, 2008 Prius, with 170,000 miles. It was only 25K, new in 10/2007. Most think it’s new since it’s garage kept with my custom front and rear running lights. Perhaps garage kept helps the original battery last longer due to less corrosion on the hybrid battery connections? The HID headlights failed but replaced them myself without taking the bumper off by feeling my way with my hand. They are much brighter than the originals. Went 90K with the energy saver Defender Michelin tires and replaced them with the regular Defender Michelin tires. Loss a few miles per gallon but handles better and a softer ride maybe due to new thread. The Prius is used for long trips only with an average mileage of 53 MPG. Short trips are by bike, feet and public transit all year. It’s a beautiful sports car Barcelona RED. Good sleeping camping car with a 6’ bed with great cargo capacity. Adding a portable inverter makes a 115 Volt generator for back up efficient home power with the on and off cycle of the engine. The Princess Prius is a tough survivor like the princess cat in the movie “The Incredible Journey”. The beautiful large dash display is ahead of its time with sharp graphics like a space ship. Ran out of gas, and a whole dashboard lit up including the triangle of death (indicates serious malfunction - do something now!). Fortunately filled up 1/2 mile away before the battery became too low. Never again!!
It’s an adventure reliable stealth vehicle that slips through the air quietly! The best smooth styling of all the model years. Definitely a incognito James Bond vehicle with secrete abilities never to be underestimated. So watch out!!! In time, it will become a classic antique with appreciating value.

I really love my 2008 Toyota Prius! Mine has 209,411, and it's been an amazing car. I have a loan on my car and it will be paid off in 2 1/2 years however, I am not concerned because of the used car dealership I got it from has stood by me ever since I got it a couple months ago. They do all my maintenance work, and such. I do an oil change and filter change every 4-5,000 miles, along with tire rotations!
My Prius has been phenomenal with high gas prices, low-car insurance rates, and I have NO check engine light on and no maintenance required light on. Let's say it's been the BEST CAR I'VE EVER OWNED! ❤

I just purchased a 2013 Prius with 114,000 miles and will pick it tomorrow. I did see something in the owners manual about cancelling my Sam’s Club membership. No big deal. I am sure the Whole Foods prices are similar.

Just donated my 2004 Prius that I put 285,000 miles on and replaced it with a 2023 Prius Prime XSE Premium.
My 2004 Prius was driving well, but I started putting more money into it after about year 15 of owning it. Here is a list of those things I replaced in the last 4-5 years.
6 disc cd changer
1 window motor
Right and left rear tail light assemblies
Hybrid battery
The latest thing that started happening in 2023 was the gauge cluster disappearing, and the car not being able to be turned off. Luckily, I found hacks that temporarily fixed those two things. But both of those problems happened twice in 2023.
But the first 15 years were mostly about regular maintenance and wear abd tear. It was overall the best car I've ever owned.
I was also the only owner and always serviced my car at the dealership.
I would recommend buying a 10-12 year old Prius, but probably not older unless you are willing and able to work on the car yourself. Things like the hybrid battery usually need to be replaced by year 15. Also things like the water pump, the Inverter, and Multi Function Display start going bad. Good luck.
I'm getting an '07 with 200k miles this weekend, but I'm upgrading from a '97 crv so I won't need grief counseling. Besides, I'm a grief counselor so I had great tools to work with anyway!

I fucking love my '07! I got it for $1,600 and paid with Cash app 🤣 of course the HV battery was going out but a really good hybrid shop by my house hooked me up for cheap. So now my car is worth more on KBB than I paid 😀 I fucking love having motorcycle MPG in a car and everything works! It's so sturdy

I have the exact same model, year, and color Prius. Mine has 288,188 miles on it! Starting to have a few issues with various engine parts, and I actually bought a 2013 Prius yesterday. It will be my 3rd Prius!
My 86k never gets over 39.6 Miles per G.
It has a New Battery Pac, & 12v, new plugs, correct amount of Motor Oil.
New tires, etc.
It still get 50% better mileage than my previous car.
So not really complaining.
So I'm going to clean the Mass airflow meter.
Will see.

I'm also looking around for a 3rd gen, 15 is a solid year but keep in mind that anything from like 12-15 is solid. Never buy the first year or two of a new gen. Gotta work out the kinks.

mine is a 2013 and now has 250,000 miles ... gas struts don't work well in cold weather ... but I just live with it.
