  • In today's vlog, I get to experience what the third generation of the Toyota Prius has to offer, and boy... Does it offer a lot!
    After almost a full year of being a total Prius enthusiast, I finally got the opportunity to check out the next generation of Toyota Prius. The 3rd generation Prius was made from 2010 to 2015 and it offers several improvements to the Prius platform. Come along as I do a few Prius activities in my own car, then head over to Josh's to check out his 2012 Prius and compare it to my (old) 2008 Prius. We also check out the 1967 Camaro that he and ‪@WatchJRGo‬ are LS Swapping for Holley LS Fest, but that takes a backseat compared to the HOT PRIUS ACTION that takes place in this video. Later on in the review, we even get a little bit of ‪@100PercentJake‬ action! Huge shoutout to Josh for letting me check out the car.

    Cant believe as a car guy, I'm looking at one of these as my next car. Motor tax, insurance, and Irish roads mean fun cars aren't viable. Not to mention fuel costs. Solid, cheap to run and space... they hold their value damn well too.

      Dude, don’t be embarrassed. I have a Hellcat, Corvette, and a Maserati and I drive my Prius the most out of all of them. Once you get over the initial embarrassment, they are actually quite good cars. And you’ll find that most of the bad reputation of the Prius stems from the type of people that typically drive them, not the cars themselves.

      @@ElliottAlvis Not embarrassed at all. I've driven my sisters Gen2 a bit, and it's actually fun! But as a guy who has had many Japanese cars (including forbidden fruit in the US such as Glanza V) it's a departure. Ireland is stupid when it comes to travel/transport. Motor tax, anywhere from €90-€1500+ per year, depending on CO2, or engine size if pre 2008. Petrol is about €1.16 per litre, and that's low prices for here. Insurance is another monster.... :p

    My 2010 has the solar panel. WOW love it. It runs a fan that sucks the hot air out of the cabin while the car is parked(been running it forever). Replaced the big battery, was easy. You can find cheaper Toyota battery by shopping thru the different dealerships(for the dealership only discounts) sites, they have portals into Toyota parts USA. Saved 1K doing that( 5 local dealerships, 1 had a sale price). But you can find better battery replacements on the market now and up your mileage. Just never cover the vent for the air intake on the big battery. It's on the passenger back door fender interior trim, hot batteries fail sooner. The solar panel running the fan is helping extend the life of my big battery, by not letting the cabin bake in the Florida sun.

    We've had a 1st Gen (2003), 2nd Gen (2006), and 3rd Gen (2010)... The 2010 burns A LOT of oil, and takes full sythetic. Expensive to opperate, the 2nd gen, specfically the 2006 is the best in my opinion, have had to do almost no maintenance over the 246k miles driven. Water pump replaced twice, and the traction battery once.

    We have a third-gen plug-in. Lots of fun to get 60, 70, or even 80 miles to the gallon, depending on the miles driven between charges. Only costs 45 cents to charge it overnight and the 4.4kw battery can take the car electric-only for up to 15 miles. The real secret to higher mileage is to put it in HV mode when cold and let the engine start and warm-up for a minute before driving. Another secret is to put quiet tires on the car. Makes the long term driving experience much more enjoyable. I have found for freeway driving, the Gen 3 has four popular speeds that work well for California freeways. For the slow lane, 62 and 68 mph work best for maximum mileage when following trucks or slower vehicles. I find most semi-trucks go about 62 mph, smaller trucks go 68 mph. Just set the cruise and forget it. For the center lane, 78 mph will keep you up with car traffic and doesn't penalize you too much on fuel economy. My Prius actually cruises really well at 82 mph which will let you compete with the faster drivers in the fast lane, but often puts you near the fuel gulping power range. Overall a fun car with a video game console right in your face. Maximize the mileage is the sport, and with some care, I can often get 75 or 80 mpg on my 30 mile round trip commute.

  • @AUSTiNKiNSER
    @AUSTiNKiNSER 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    So on the Hybrid System Indicator, the center line represents the limit for electric only driving (when everything is already warmed up). The EV button is kind of pointless, and only useful if you’re going out to move it and don’t want the engine to start up for its warmup cycle, you can press EV mode right after powering up so the engine doesn’t do it’s warm up. That’s at least it’s one good use for me.
    But the Gen.3 can drive on electric only with the engine at 0 RPM up to 46 mph, (42 mph for Gen.1 and Gen.2). If you keep the bar inside that center line. When in EV mode (pressing the button) it kicks off at 25 mph, but you can actually accelerate up to 25 mph decently when you use the EV button, just don’t let the hybrid system indicator bar go into the power portion.
    I usually keep my finger on or near the button and turn off EV mode at about 24 mph so it doesn’t beep and give the warning, and right before I turn it off I let off the throttle enough to make sure that the bar goes below the center line so it still stays in electric mode.

    • @ElliottAlvis
      @ElliottAlvis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Austin Kinser this was the kind of detailed explanation I needed! I knew that my second gen would stay in electric only up to 42mph so I was surprised that EV Mode kicked itself off after 25mph but you’re detailed explanation makes a ton of sense. Thanks man!

    • @BrownsFaninIowa
      @BrownsFaninIowa 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ElliottAlvis That is a neat feature in the 3rd gen cars. We keep the ECO mode switch on most of time and use that particular graphic in the hybrid display to modulate the throttle to maximize the time in electric-only mode in daily around-town driving. It is nice having a graphic show you where you are in maintaining electric mode as opposed to the 2nd gens where you have to do it by feel.

  • @BrownsFaninIowa
    @BrownsFaninIowa 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    We've owned a 2nd gen ('07 Touring) and current own a 3rd gen ('15 Four) -- we bought both new. So we've been Prius-ing for 13 years now. They are incredibly practical haulers -- TONS of room inside.
    The third gen is MUCH more comfortable to drive long distance (ours has heated seats, power lumbar) and those 2nd gen seats are painful over long distances. I found the 2nd gen to be better with front storage, generally (more convenient, easier to use). Plus that fold-down dual cupholder at the back edge of the console was brilliant in the 2nd gen...and missing in the 3rd gen. The shifter console thing in the 3rd gen seems cool at first, but I found it to be a total waste of space long term. The little storage area underneath is helpful, but really I found the openness of the 2nd gen more appealing overall.
    Overall we found the 3rd gen to be more refined overall than the 2nd gen -- smoother, more powerful, better driving, and better fuel mileage ('07 we got 38mpg over 100k miles of driving, '15 we are at 41+mpg over 50k miles)
    In our 3rd gen we have downloaded the Entune app, sync'd it to the car...and NEVER used it in the 4+ years we've owned it. Ever. We have never found anything worthwhile in the app to even bother messing with.
    We have found the on-board GPS to be a disappointment, too. While it navigates adequately, the resolution and colors are really low-rent to the point of being useless to help you get a sense of where you are and the location of the roads around you.
    We have looked at 4th gens when they first came out, but it didn't appear that they had as much usable room in the back and bought the '15 instead of a '16.

Keeping the gen 2 made most sense to me, I would only consider a real upgrade like a gen 3 insight or gen 4 Prius now. If your considering a 2nd gen Prius for yourself I’ll tell you the cons: little-to-no torque/power going a hill or off-ramp, outdated tech/entertainment, no temperature gauge. The car itself is bulletproof, no doubt in reliability (varies with used car and it’s service record), and certain early failure point such as wheel bearings. Overall, would recommend, it’s not much more expensive to maintain than a NA car but the savings are much more. The only thing is the lack of power/torque and the oldness or lack of tech in the car.

    Hi Elliot, I'm currently indecisive about the Prius P3. I'm looking for my next car(family is growing) and trying to decide between a 2008 P2 or a 2011 P3. $6000 vs $8500. Could you please explain your experience with them? Is the P3 worth the upgrade? From videos to me it's like a better interior, better seats and that's pretty much it. To me the P2 despite its age still looks fine and actually buyable for 2-3 years to come. What are your thoughts?

    • @ElliottAlvis
      @ElliottAlvis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Szilveszter Sebők I think the P3 is a slight upgrade from the P2, but it’s mostly interior features. The P2 is still a very good car and you really can’t go wrong with either car. If the P3 you’re looking at is in considerably better condition than the P2, it might be worth the extra money. But other than that, you can’t go wrong either way.

Fyi : I own the Gen 3 too ...... Taken it to multiple cross country road trips and in one case even slept in my car overnight in 108 F temperature in Arizona with the A/C on and had to turn in to low because it got so DAMN cold ... Bought my 2012 grey Prius back in 2017 with 91k miles on it for $10,100. The original owner said he bought it brand new back in 2011 and this Prius was sitting in the show room, it came fully loaded with 17 inch rims, navigation and leather seats. The vehicle looks practically brand new when I purchased it, even the leather seats have no scratches and no sign of wear and tear. Toyota dealer replaced front brakes and struts, Hybrid battery, Egr and both coolant flushed and refill @146k miles. Egr was a recall so I didn’t have to dish out any cash. Hybrid battery was still good but a friend of mine who works forToyota dealer suggest that I replace it, cost me $900 for a brand new hybrid battery. I replaced the spark plugs every 90k miles and oil change every 5k miles. I was living in Northern California and moved to Texas last year, prior to moving i had the water pump and thermal stat replaced, new pcv valve, clean throttle body and hybrid battery fan, new timing gasket. I’m currently over 197k and my Prius’s running like it’s brand new, only had all the works done as a preventive maintenance because my friend does it for cheap, nothing was wrong it with. I have no oil consumption and never have a check engine light on except for oil change warning light. With the prices of new vehicles escalating I’m hoping to drive it for another 100k.

      Hi Wayne, I'm glad to read your comments because I can see some preventative items to address down the road. I recently bought a 2014 with very low miles from the original owner. I never thought I'd get a Prius! I've had an 03 Civic Hybrid and always saw the Prius as too odd looking for my tastes. But it's a commuting car for me which serves it's purpose well.
      I'm a native Texan and grew up in the Austin area. Many here won't say this lol, but Welcome to Texas! I absolutely love California and by that I mean it's nature and scenery. I've visited the bay area twice and fell in love with it when Iast visited in 2012. I even considered moving there, that was until I saw how much the cost of living was. I've heard it's changed a lot for the worse since then. Looks like it from what I see from here. But that doesn't take away from it's beauty. I may just have to take a trip up the Pacific coast highway in the Prius! Haha. Hope your Prius is doing well for you. Now that you're in Texas, where do you get yours serviced? Take care!
      Julian

    Ethanol free is all I use in my vintage cars. Even cars that are designed to use e85 have a 25-33% fuel economy drop. I had a company GMC Sierra that was e85 capable and the trip from Grand Island to Fort Morgan saw a drop from 19mpg to 13mpg.

    • @ElliottAlvis

      BILL GORMAN true, it’s important to use ethanol free gas in vintage cars. And E85 capable cars experience worse fuel economy, but better performance when you fill up with actual E85 not just the BS mixture that all gas has in it these days.

      Elliott Alvis Yes, give us a Ford C-Max review! My 2013 has 174k. It’s been rock solid, and fun to drive. If only it got amazing mpg like a Prius! I’ve owned 4 Prii, I still have a 2004 as my backup car. I’ve had a 2005, 2012, 2012 v five. Loved em all!

      aaronvitolins I’ll do my best to review a C-Max soon! What kind of mpg are you experiencing?

      Elliott Alvis awesome! I get mid 40s around town, but only mid 30 to upper 30s on the highway. That’s at 70-75 mph. :(

    Please please please try a 4th gen. The 3rd gen is fine but it understeers badly, the 4th gen can actually go round corners (but maybe this doesn't matter in the USA).

      I will hopefully get to experience a 4th gen soon! The cornering this doesn't matter *as* much here in Kansas because its all flat and straight, but it is important to me personally so I'll be anxious to see how it handles! Thanks for watching!

    2nd gen prius last way longer(400,000mi+), if your gonna ever change up id reccomend the smaller cheaper and better driving prius c, or the larger prius v. I drove them all as a courier they were company cars so i never paid for a thing.

      400,000 miles??? That's amazing! Was that on the original Hybrid battery?

      @@jonathanfiel6215 yes the original batteries, and when they go bad I'd replace the cell myself. The thing that stopped working that mattered was the dash would stop working then no speedometer or gas guage also the odo stopped adding up the miles when it would not work

    If your second gen prius doesnt have a second screen youve got the wrong one, they had available screens back then and the backup camera was a must imo. 5 disc changer and leather were nice too
