I currently live full-time out of my Toyota Sienna. A few weeks ago I watched this video. I've known about the climate control capability of the vehicle for years. But seeing your microwave and inverter was a revelation. I had no idea you could run appliances off the Prius. Game-changer! I've watched a ton of Prius dwelling video since then.. I even rented a Prius 2 weeks ago to check it out in depth. Now I am 90% sure I'll be making the Prius my next vehicle to live out of. And I'm stoked! 🙂 From one nomad to another...Your content has had a huge impact on me. Thanks. Keep it up man. Good stuff.
It's harsh on the 12v starting battery. I'd recommend a small lithium battery and a charging relay/ auto cutoff between the lithium and the starting battery. The relay protects your starting battery and charges only when the engine is on. Worth every penny.
@@SlammedAvalon for a battery you can also get a 20ah or 50ah LiFePO4 (lithium) battery that's quite small and not too expensive. If you have more space you can just get a marine size 31 battery at an auto store. More capacity and less upfront cost.
This was the very first Prius Camper video I ever saw. Before this I didn't even realize that people turned cars into campers. Much less that the Prius was the perfect car to camp or live in. Now I'm hooked and I've been binge watching these kinds of videos to learn for when I'm ready myself. I honestly believe that this kind of minimalist lifestyle can solve so many societal problems if single young people lived liked this in order to save money so they can settle down with a family completely DEBT FREE!
that's neat, I'm glad I was able to show you that car camping is a thing with this video. yeah, it's nice to live in your car for a while so you can save some money
Thanks so much for taking the time to show us your setup!! My Prius is 10 years old and has over 206k miles on it and is still going strong!! IMHO, NOTHING beats a Prius!!!!
I was a trucker they trained us NEVER to sleep behind the wheel that's your alert place. Best to crawl into bed you'll sleep better and safer than eventually falling asleep behind the wheel when driving.
Yep, too easy to get blood clots in your legs and travel to your heart or lungs and you die from sitting in the front seat too long. Make sure you get horizontal at least 7 hours a day every day. Sleep in the back always. (Just ask YTer Car Living Case about that. Ended up in the emergency room from sleeping in the front seat kf his car.)
I guess going to sleep in the driving position could be subconsciously habit forming. But because most of my car sleeping was 1 or 2 nights at a time, and the driver's seat goes completely horizontal, that is what I normally did. Not worth setting up a bed and crawling to it for just a night or two. And I never confused driving position (looking out the windshield) with sleeping position (looking at the roof and actually having a black sheet stretched out above me). As for clots, I can get my legs horizontal with feet behind the brake pedal. The trick is to not step on the brake pedal if the car is in Ready Mode (a fancy way of saying On and ready to drive) which would ruin your stealth with brake lights. In some cars, the brake lights come on even with the car off! I discovered that when sleeping on the front floor of a rental car in a national park (rangers tend to look in the back for people). I got a knock on the window in the middle of the night because my brake lights were on! But it was from people telling me to get off the brake pedal before the ranger found me! Linda of Serene and Simple Life sleeps in the driver's seat in various positions, living in a Highlander, preferring it to a bed in the back. But she's the exception to the rule among people living fulltime in a vehicle. In any case, it's such a space-saving move, that it's worth figuring out whether it works as well for you as a bed. It does also have the huge advantage of being able to much more quickly drive away if things go bump in the night that you want to get away from. Plus easier access to HVAC controls, lights, horn, etc.
I've got my inverter put in and tried out my small instant pot, an infrared cooktop and a 700 watt microwave. All work great. Did a dry run of powering the essentials(freezer, refrigerator, modem, 2 latops and 4 LED lamps) in my home using 4-50 foot extension cords as a backup for a power outage. Most important thing is not to draw more than 1000 watts total at one time so you don't overtax your main battery. Why doesn't Toyota make a small camper using the Prius motor. I'd get one in a heartbeat.
I have a minivan but got so many tips and ideas from your setup. Best Prius setup I've seen. Thanks for taking the time to go into all the little details. Most creators dont and I think newbies want the details no one talks about. Great job!
I camp out of my Prius all the time. I bought a tent called habitat that fits on the back hatchback gives you headspace and airflow with screens. I have used it since 2015.
Excellent set up. For those that are not familiar with instant pots, you might mention its versatility as it can be used to pressure cook meats/veggies, but also can be used like a stove top to brown meats, cook/simmer sauces, keep foods warm and even bake a cheesecake or other sweet cakes.
Be sure to use the smallest 3 quart model that uses only 645 watts (at least mine does) at the max. It takes a few minutes to get up to temperature and pressure THEN THE POWER COMPLETELY SHUTS OFF AND THE REST OF THE COOKING USES NO ELECTRICITY AT ALL. I have a Kill-a-Watt and observed this firsthand.
@@M447DT If it helps, we bought a brand new Prius C in 2013. In eight years it's never broken. Maintenance only. The only special thing we do is to keep the garage heat on during the winter time. Temperature extremes are hard on batteries. If you buy a used Prius, five years old or older be sure to check or replace the "House" battery, or "Control" battery. It's about the size of a regular car battery and it controls the entire car, sending signals to the traction battery and it also powers the audio system and other things. If that goes bad a Prius won't start or do anything.
I really appreciate the little things that add value to your life and don’t cost much, it is just about fitting just right. Like the fridge door being held up by the passenger seat. I think you have a talent for solving problems
I'm planning on getting a van to travel and camp in. I'm glad that I watched this because it gave me a lot of ideas on how to maximize space. I'm shocked that you made a Prius work for you! This is incredible! Your gas mileage is making me very jealous haha

*INCREDIBLE SET UP!* *Consider not smothering your inverter with too many clothes because all inverters have a ventilation fan & need to breath otherwise over time they will burn out faster.* *Also consider when it's in drive-mode cover everything behind your seats with a simple dark colored sheet just in case someone peeks in & feels tempted to smash & grab when your not "home".*
Yeah I have since taken the inverter out of that little cubby and put it inside the cab of the car. And yes good idea on covering everything with a dark sheet, I often put my window covers in the front windows so nobody can see in
Oh, this is why there's a lot of people who lived in a prius. It's that hybrid battery. Wow! Fuel economy is amazing! You pretty much have everything in there.
I have a Prius and a dog, and we both love roadtrips. So far we either stayed in dog-friendly hotels or set up a campsite. This is what I'll try next. I'll have to re-think all the stuff I usually put in the car when camping, most is "just in case" but they take up space. Thanks!
Wow! That's incredible, you might be the highest mileage Prius I've heard yet. How many miles were on it when you bought it? also, what kind of work have you done besides rebuilding the hybrid battery since you've owned it?
@@MountainSpringsAdventures Yeah! I post on Priuschat about my car. Bought it new. I am on all the high mileage threads. Going for the 500k thread. I run synthetic oil. Change every 10k. Sparkplugs, transmission fluid, serpentine belt, every 100k. Only changed the front brake shoes once @ 300k. And tires of course. That's it! Everything still works. Man you’ve almost sold me on an old Prius for camping. Running the hvac off the battery most of the time and 15 miles off a little bottle of emergency gas. Dope
www.nj.com/union/2014/08/deceased_woman_in_elizabeth_worked_four_jobs_napped_in_car_overcome_by_fumes_police_say.html I’d be SUPER careful sleeping in a car with a bottle of gasoline.
@@TimeGallon if you use a sealed bottle made from gas it doesn’t leak fumes. Plus she was in a ‘01 Kia. It’s exhaust was probably non existent leaking into the cabin. A Prius runs for a few minutes every hour, as long as your exhaust is working fully and you aren’t parking in a closed garage you are fine.
Zach S I’ve owned 3 priuses and I’ve lived out of one for almost 2 years. I had a carbon monoxide detector, fridge, tri-fold cot, curtains, the whole set up. So I’m not dissing any effort to cut corners but I would never keep a bottle of gasoline in my car as I slept. Even if it was 100% sealed and tested in a lab by professionals, it would bother me that I’m potentially putting my mental health at risk by breathing in gasoline fumes that could escape if the bottle manages to leak. Not to mention the highly explosive nature of a sealed container of gas. I’d just rather keep an eye on my fuel gauge and if I absolute had to carry extra gas, I’d get a exterior luggage rack and store a five gallon container. Cause I mean, an extra 15 miles sounds cool but if you’re low on gas and decide to park somewhere secluded instead of finding a gas station and then you end up running completely out of gas, I don’t have any sympathy for you lol. And if you do run out of gas but the nearest gas station is 25 miles away then the extra gas is pretty much pointless.
@@TimeGallon you are very right. But MSR white gas bottles for backpacking stoves have like 50 years of track record of people using them safely in these situations.

@@MountainSpringsAdventures I especially appreciate that you include the links below the video. What an amazing little vehicle--I wonder why no one else has utilized that technology in larger vehicles? yeah it would be great if they used the hybrid technology in a larger vehicle. I feel like a Toyota Highlander hybrid would be a good camper conversion but it's not as reliable as a Prius. Solar power systems are still great. Good luck with your camper and safe travels
I have 2008 but the new ones, especially the plug in hybrid are more than worth it. 44 miles on just electric, and then 52mpg on the 15 gallon tank. I thinks it’s very worth it.

Excellent set up. Thanks for showing it. I can attest to the reliability of the Prius. Ours is a 2002 first generation model (the sedan before it changed to hatchback!). It has 150,000 miles and still on the original hybrid batteries, which were warranted for 80,000. No significant repairs have yet been needed but the usual: breaks, tires, that sort of expected thing.
Awesome! This is more like the setup I had in my Blazer when I lived in it on the road. Minimal work, nothing fancy, inexpensive, and total stealth. The big fancy vans are SO OBVIOUS even when they are “stealth”. And bluntly, if I want to live in something that looks like a house, I’ll just live in a house. For living in a vehicle and traveling, this is perfect. Love it.
I love my Prius and Honda civic hybrid. So easy to work on - even the batteries! However, I've had issues with the Prius handling in snow. I've had issues with below freezing weather effecting the battery health. But that's honestly it. I love my hybrids! Maybe I'll see you out on the road! Thanks so much for sharing all that you have done to make your car such a smart and affordable way to see all of the beauty that God created. May God bless and keep you safe, healthy and rolling. :-)
Nice job! Thanks! Yeah, the Prius is the best small camper ever. Fantastic versatility. The 24/7 heating and cooling systems along with electrical are pure gold missing in every small camper setup up to an RV. Very economical. Flat-folding Popup shower tent is a nice addition for changing/cleaning/etc privacy or even tarps and poles for more outside versatility.
With the increasing potential for severe weather conditions.. violent social unrest and other unexpected events , more than ever it is a very good idea to be flexible and prepared. Anything that attracts undo attention is a bad idea... expensive R.V.s.. outwardly elaborate conversation vans ... any vehicle that shouts "survival, bug-out prepped rig" must be avoided. Think visually boring..uninteresting.. dull. Your safety, comfort and low key .. low maintenance mobility are paramount. This video is an excellent example of how to deal with emergency situations... and not sacrifice day to day practicality. Good job.
Very cool! Never thought about a Prius camper. One thing I would consider is making your first aid kit more accessible, maybe buckled the the back of the headrest or somewhere someone else can see it if you get in trouble
Mine made it over 290K, and would have gone a lot further if a Chevy Blazer hadn't backed into it. Now I have a HiHy for the same features, but more room and 4WDi

You’re prepared man, simple minimalist life is underrated
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Yes I guess you could call this a minimalist type lifestyle
From one nomad to another...Your content has had a huge impact on me.

This is like the proper legit straight up video by any camper on TH-cam no nonsense just straight facts
Or boomers whose lives didn't turn out as planned ... like me... 😆
Thanks so much for taking the time to show us your setup!! My Prius is 10 years old and has over 206k miles on it and is still going strong!! IMHO, NOTHING beats a Prius!!!!
Your welcome and that's great! Yeah I really feel like the Prius is one of the best cars on the road right now
I absolutely love my 2015 Prius
My 2005 Prius has 276 thousand. I hope she keeps going. Her name is Pearl.
I was a trucker they trained us NEVER to sleep behind the wheel that's your alert place.
Best to crawl into bed you'll sleep better and safer than eventually falling asleep behind the wheel when driving.
Been there, done that, very true!
Having a seat that folds down helps.
I just ask in my comment could I buy a battery off a wreck Prius to Power my camper? I can't afford Tesla's.
Think you could transfer one to the other? Conversion kits will be big soon, in my opinion.
Toyota Sienna is hybrid only and comes close to being camper sized.
The probably do in Japan or something similar

Mmm
Was that a basket of rocks
I camp out of my Prius all the time. I bought a tent called habitat that fits on the back hatchback gives you headspace and airflow with screens. I have used it since 2015.
Excellent set up. For those that are not familiar with instant pots, you might mention its versatility as it can be used to pressure cook meats/veggies, but also can be used like a stove top to brown meats, cook/simmer sauces, keep foods warm and even bake a cheesecake or other sweet cakes.
Very true! thanks for the tips
@@MountainSpringsAdventures : If you haven't yet, perhaps do a cooking vid on how it's used?
Be sure to use the smallest 3 quart model that uses only 645 watts (at least mine does) at the max. It takes a few minutes to get up to temperature and pressure THEN THE POWER COMPLETELY SHUTS OFF AND THE REST OF THE COOKING USES NO ELECTRICITY AT ALL. I have a Kill-a-Watt and observed this firsthand.
Yeah

@@MountainSpringsAdventures what year is your prius what generation of prius is most reliable ?
I have a 2006. I've heard the second gen (2004-2009) is the most reliable but they're all reliable in all honesty
@@MountainSpringsAdventures Will you please tell me what brand refrigerator you have?
@@M447DT If it helps, we bought a brand new Prius C in 2013. In eight years it's never broken. Maintenance only. The only special thing we do is to keep the garage heat on during the winter time. Temperature extremes are hard on batteries. If you buy a used Prius, five years old or older be sure to check or replace the "House" battery, or "Control" battery. It's about the size of a regular car battery and it controls the entire car, sending signals to the traction battery and it also powers the audio system and other things. If that goes bad a Prius won't start or do anything.
Clever setup. Never imagined all of this could work in a prius.
I really appreciate the little things that add value to your life and don’t cost much, it is just about fitting just right. Like the fridge door being held up by the passenger seat. I think you have a talent for solving problems
One of the best Prius camping conversions I have watched on YT. I like the fridge.
Well thank you very much! That means a lot
I'm planning on getting a van to travel and camp in. I'm glad that I watched this because it gave me a lot of ideas on how to maximize space. I'm shocked that you made a Prius work for you! This is incredible! Your gas mileage is making me very jealous haha

I 2nd that!
I just bought a Prius. I only drove it three times. It’s a 2008. This video is so inspiring and I can’t wait to go camping in my Prius.❤❤❤
*INCREDIBLE SET UP!*
*Consider not smothering your inverter with too many clothes because all inverters have a ventilation fan & need to breath otherwise over time they will burn out faster.*
*Also consider when it's in drive-mode cover everything behind your seats with a simple dark colored sheet just in case someone peeks in & feels tempted to smash & grab when your not "home".*
Yeah I have since taken the inverter out of that little cubby and put it inside the cab of the car. And yes good idea on covering everything with a dark sheet, I often put my window covers in the front windows so nobody can see in
Wife and I took 9 day 8 night trip in our Prius V in the winter to Iowa this October was pleasurable. Well done.
Moment we guys saw that dr pepper bottle, we were all waiting for him to be honest about the usage for it 😂
Love the basic setup. Mini fridge, microwave and instant pot just wow me. Some hotels don’t even have microwave and or mini fridge
Oh, this is why there's a lot of people who lived in a prius. It's that hybrid battery. Wow! Fuel economy is amazing! You pretty much have everything in there.
yes, i have everything i need pretty muich
I'm so impressed how everything fits so perfectly and it looks like you have absolutely nothing in your car when you 1st open it up
Yes, that was one of my goals, to keep it stealth so nobody would ever guess that somebody is living inside of it
I have a Prius and a dog, and we both love roadtrips. So far we either stayed in dog-friendly hotels or set up a campsite. This is what I'll try next. I'll have to re-think all the stuff I usually put in the car when camping, most is "just in case" but they take up space. Thanks!
Yeah no problem, good luck with your build. I've learned from experience that I don't carry anything that I don't need now
Wow, I’m impressed. We just went over 250,000 miles in our 2009 Prius so can relate to your love of the car. Great job!!
My 2005 Prius has 470k. Same engine and transmission. Got a rebuilt hybrid battery at 358k. It's indestructible.
I’d be SUPER careful sleeping in a car with a bottle of gasoline.

Excellent set up. Thanks for showing it. I can attest to the reliability of the Prius. Ours is a 2002 first generation model (the sedan before it changed to hatchback!). It has 150,000 miles and still on the original hybrid batteries, which were warranted for 80,000. No significant repairs have yet been needed but the usual: breaks, tires, that sort of expected thing.

Just a tip about the gas bottle. Be sure to change out the gas once a month. Gas does go bad. You have an awesome set up and functional too.

You could also just add fuel stabilizer in it to prevent that.
With the increasing potential for severe weather conditions.. violent social unrest and other unexpected events , more than ever it is a very good idea to be flexible and prepared.
