- Castlevania was a game that spawned an entire franchise of vampire-hunting escapades and was also one of the most classic NES game of all time. Up there with Super Mario Bros, Ninja Gaiden, Legend of Zelda and Megaman. Castlevania brings that classic NES charm and a fear of the night as you battle all kinds of monsters.
Castlevania was released by Konami in 1987 in America and received critically acclaiming reception. It was ranked 19 among IGNs favorite NES games. You play as Simon Belmont who armed with his whip the Vampire Killer must venture the dark corridors and staircases to kill the legendary vampire himself Dracula. Following Castlevania were of games for all different consoles from NES to the Xbox 360. Castlevania remains to be on the most classic franchises of out time.

I work in a theme park, and I run the spook house ride, "Dracula's Castle." Nearly got fired for swapping out the house soundtrack with the ost from Castlevania. Worth it.

THIS is my Halloween. Every year. I come here and listen to the greatest episode(s) of AVGN ever made. I think I like it so much because it's actually a game that The Nerd loves, and the enthusiasm is just irresistible. So as Halloween is here again, so am I. Listening to AVGN Castlevania and listening to 8 bit soundtracks. Heaven.

I prefer the Dracula X version.
An easy way to beat the Knights and Medusa heads in the hall before the Grim Reaper is having the Holy Water subweapon. The technique is to keep throwing Holy Water, it paralyses the knights and also stops the medusa heads from getting near you.
The cross also works very well
Holy water is ridiculously overpowered, it destroys any enemy with ease, even bosses!
It even paralyzes Dracula Phase II
The hard part is that you only get Holy Water in the begining of that stage. If you lose a life in the middle of it, you'll respawn in an area where is impossible to get that item back. It's infuriating lol
I recently found that you don't even need to KEEP throwing the water, too. For me, the trick is to lunge at the knight and throw the water in the air so that the knight can't retreat fast enough to avoid the water.
These classic avgn videos in a real basement are the best

In my opinion these four videos are James Rolfe's best AVGN episodes.
Well, it's a throwback to Simon's Quest, where the series began.
I bought Rolling Rock today because of this guy. They owe him some royalties! I forgot all about that beer.
It was huge in Pennsylvania before it went national. ....and you know what? The popularity of AVGN and the nationwide sales of Rolling Rock coincide almost perfectly. ... Just saying

What they're basically saying with all the cheesy celebrity names, is that the game is meant to be viewed as a horror movie, where _You_ play as the star. Just think of it as, every time you die, there's a director yelling "Cut!" because you messed up the scene they were shooting. It would also explain why a lot of the staircases go nowhere. The way they often would on the set of a stage play.

Could be. I never played Dracula's Curse.
Yeah I remember finding the ending credit roll super funny already back in the early 90ites (and I am the same generation as AVGN) and I got it immediately that they were spoofing the names of famous horror movie actors which made perfect sense as i was playing a game where i had just killed Dracula (hence the horror genre)
So given that James/AVGN is a horror movie fan I was a bit surprised that he completely dismisses the credit roll and almost gets angry at it "what the hell is this not even a child would think this is funny!"
Nowadays i still find this a funny and cheesy way of acknowledging all those early forerunners of the horror genre that laid the groundwork for new francises like Castlevania today.
Come to think of it I think this game also opens with a Film scroll (if you don't press start right away) - hinting at the fact that game virtually is a movie where the lead (the player) is pitted against all the classic stock monsters of the genre (the Bat, the Medusa head, the Mummies, Frankenstein and Igor, The Grim Reaper, and finally the Count himself).

Original rondo of blood was great. But the controls in super castlevania were much more fluid and the music was slightly better. Thats what gives it the edge but rondo is up there. frozenaorta
Rondo of Blood is a pierce of horse shit and only got famous because it never left Japan in its original state.

AVGN episodes 79-81 are my favorite. Such a great feeling to settle down (whether with friends or alone) with a classic and fun horror game franchise like Castlevania! Nobody presented it better and with more heart than James.

The whip is kinda explained now, it was created by alchemy and when it strikes certain things-it has random and odd effects on it. Thus the weapon was considered a holy weapon later on down the line. And its proven to be one of the very few weapons that COULD hurt the undead.

The AVGN Castlevania series is my favorite of his reviews. It also turned me into a massive fan of the series and I've finished and played several entries as a result. Thank you James! You also acted as the intro and inspiration for me getting into retrogaming in general. Been watching since 2006, will watch until the grim day that Avgn ends.

I haven't heard of this guy up until a few days ago. I must say, I'm really liking it so far! He's pretty damn funny. I'm glad there was someone out there that reviewed shitty games so we can all laugh at them and hopefully avoid them. It's also cool learning about all the 80's and 90's consoles that no one knew about. He has a pretty impressive collection of retro game stuff.

The Sega Saviour I don't care if he's not some expert gamer god, I don't watch for that. I enjoy it because It feels like I'm just hanging on the couch with some buddies trying some games. And avgn has an emphasis on older titles as well.
+Sir Bacon I've been watching AVGN since 2007. Every day I check the site as soon as I wake up to see if there's anything new. I've never been this attached to any movie, tv series, or web series in my life. I'm close to the same age as these guys, and I can relate to 99% of the things they talk about, so when I watch them I feel like I'm connecting with people that I could be good friends with in real life. I would kill for an opportunity to be on any of their shows, including J & M Mondays.
Oh, and don't listen to people that tell you to avoid any of their content. Watch it for yourself to decide if you like it or not!

I've made it a tradition to watch this Castlevania marathon every October. It has some of the best episodes in the AVGN series.
I swear, these videos are therapeutic if you are having a bad day.
I just beat this fucker last night. In fact, I just got my own personal NES and an entire slew of games recently and I'm proud to say, this is the very first NES game I've ever beaten entirely on my own. Took me a few hours, but I came out of this game literally screaming happy that I finished it. I haven't felt that kind of satisfaction since I was a kid. And to be honest... I kind of miss it. Marathoning such a hard game, learning every trick and being so damn grateful when you FINALLY topple the beast that is the game that kicked your ass for the last forever. I beat Castlevania. No tricks or hints. All on my own and I'm happy about it.
Then it started Stage 19.
I know how that feels, sadly I don't have my NES anymore, a cousin and I finished Super Castlevania when i was younger and it was the most fun we had.

To be honest these 4 Castlevania review videos are my favorite of his. I really wish he would go back to this style of reviews instead of all the special effects and acting in between the review. These are always a joy to watch

Of all the AVGN episodes, I keep finding myself coming back to this one among others. The episodes that focus more on the history of the consoles and games are some of the best AVGN episodes.

Using the intro cinematic theme from Castlevania 4 was genius. It sounds so mystical and eerie, fits perfectly with the intro to the video.
