I think the jungle stuff was added because of the popularity of Rambo and Predator and y'know army war shit always happened in a jungle back in the 80's.

Unfortunately, the original MSX version also had the "unavoidable damage in gas rooms" problem, because it had the same thing where you have to select the keycard to get in/out.

I personally didn't enjoy the MSX version of this game. It shared a few problems with the NES version (the pits, the gas chamber, the dialogue boxes), but what got me through it was constantly telling myself that this isn't the NES version.
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake on the other hand... OH GOD! Those who have MGS3 Subsistence/HD: PLAYITPLAYITPLAYITPLAYITPLAYITPLAYITPLAYITPLAYITPLAYITPLAYIT!!!!!!!!!!
I for one like both versions. MSX version gets an 8.5 out of 10 from me... the NES... uhhhh... 6.4... still a classic for what it's worth.
Agreed. MG2 is really where the series began to flourish. It's 10x the game MG1 is. I personally think MG2 holds up better today than MGS1 does.

Long passwords are a necessity in order to keep track of every last bit of progress made by the player. I can't explain the technical bits, but essentially, each one of those characters you need to enter denotes part of the information that would be "saved", such as items and story progression.

Just to be clear, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance is also considered to be 100% canon, it's just that it doesn't involve Big Boss (justified, since the creators wanted to establish that he is dead without a doubt and that other characters went on to have some unrelated adventures in the future). It still has a ton of continuity nods and callbacks to the previous games, and it both starts and ends with a Metal Gear boss fight.

Even though it wasn't that good of a game compared to the MSX version, Metal Gear on NES actually did very well in the states.

Kojima picked Platinum himself. He handed it off to them because the mechanics were harder than he thought. Konami had nothing to do with it. Kojima wanted MGR exactly like that, loved how it turned out, and said he'd love to make MGR2 with Platinum, again.
MrEricon9 Well, unfortunately there will be no more MGS or MGR as we know. Metal Gear Solid V - The Phantom Pain will be the last true MGS Game if rumors about Kojima and Konami are true.
I have nothing against Platinum Games and about MGR, I like it but is garbage as a general opinion. What I didn't like is the change they made from the original presentation to the final game, graphically.

Kojima has said he will make no more MGS games because the story of Snake (both Solid and Big Boss) is done. He'll very likely do another Metal Gear game, probably Rising, since he said he wanted to do a sequel.
And I personally saw nothing wrong with the graphics. Even if I did, they'd have to be really bad for me to use the term garbage.

Mr_Beezlebub It's a shame we didn't get the MSX in the US, the good version of Metal Gear, and Metal Gear 2 until MGS3 and HD Collection.
I agree, it is a shame. Sadly the MSX wasn't sold here in the US. But at least we did eventually get in in MSG3 and the HD Collection. Better late than never.

If I had Metal Gear 2 as a kid, or even the original Metal Gear, that would have blown my mind. As a kid, I loved the Nes version. It was hard, with all of its flaws, but I considered it was part of the challenge. Glitches were a concept I didn't think of until the 3D era of gaming, mainly Sega Saturn.
It’s weird how Snakes Revenge and Portable Ops aren’t cannon, yet both are my favorite games.
3:11 I mean maybe back then you could probably tell it was Michael Biehn if you had seen that picture but I think most people didn’t know because one the terminator movie didn’t have that picture on the cover two most people didn’t have internet at the time so nowadays everyone who’s ever seen terminator has seen that picture
With 2D classic shooters like Contra, Tyrian (in the 90s for that) and Zero Wing (with a less dumb localisation), it was left to Hideo Kojima on the MSX and the creator of the original Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein to ask "what if there was an action game where the player tried to achieve something other than genocide? Where one or two measles kills could have the game wrest control from the player and yell "what the fuck?"" And thus was born, the stealth 'em up.
The MSX version was way better. It still had a lot of the flaws, but not as buggy and it was a lot more playable.
Loved this game, regardless of its flaws. NES games were tough as balls, good time.
In the booklet that came with the game. There was a page that showed you how or where to put your save code in, and don't you know, one of the codes in the book actually worked. Remote controlled rocket!

If anyone is curious why passwords were so long, it’s because they’re literally like memory state dumps. The more stuff it saves, the more space the password needs to take up. Furthermore, it has to be scrambled and have lots more invalid combinations than valid ones so you can’t just enter random shit and get some valid game state.

The password has to be long in order to remember what items you have, which guns and how much ammo. That's the main reason why games that don't keep up a detailed inventory have short passwords... Just putting it out there...

It's funny how the flaws never phased me while playing this game as a kid. I'd see the really bad English, and think "that was weird", but then just continue to play.
In fairness, big boss was hoping you'd fail the mission, hence his "useless" advice.
Even just dropping a rookie operative behind enemy lines with nothing but a pack of cigarettes could very well have been a ploy by Big Boss for Snake to fail in his mission

Fun Fact, James. The man who did a majority of the artwork for the Metal Gear games was the late Noriyoshi Ohrai. If the name sounds familiar, he did posters for Star Wars and his most famous work being the Godzilla posters from 1985 to 2004.

Wait a second... the enemy at the beginning was sleeping BEFORE he said "I feel asleep". You can see the Z's before that and afterwards, they're gone, and then his legs are moving! He was saying that because he was surprised he fell asleep! That's why he attacked Snake! He was awake!!!

I was a teen back in the 90s and loved playing this game. Towards the middle of the game after a password continue, I was stuck in this one stage for HOURS. In pure frustration I threw down the controller and stood straight up.. then blacked out.

Dude Twin Snakes is the way to go if your going to play the original MGS but both versions are still classics.
There is no Portable Ops or Rising in Kojima's saga. To be honest, Rising doesn't even deserve to be in the franchise.
IDK dude Rising wasn't like any of the other MGS game but I still had a ton of fun playing it.

Actually, Kojima's Solid Snake is inspired by Snake Plisskin, a character from Escape From New York. In fact, in one of the Metal Gear Solid games, Snake's nickname is "Pliskin".

Zelda appears briefly when you get the Ocarina of Time in MM. Link's Awakening would be a better example as she didn't appear at all, but only mentioned by name in the beginning of that game.
Fun fact; Konami gave the development team only THREE months to complete the NES version of Metal Gear, while also giving instructions to make it different from MSX2 original.

When I was a kid I discovered that the passcode system determined the items you have. I used to mix and match to see what kind of items it would give me. Sometimes I would start the game with high number key cards and weapons .
Absolute favorite line from this episode at 12:10, keeps me coming back to this episode, well and the fact that it's a classic avgn episode

John Laite You don't need to unlock it iirc. It's playable straight away. They're also on the HD Collection and Legacy Edition too
actually, there is a reason for long passwords. that's the only way you'll get to keep the items you had when you got there. in other words, when we didn't have Memory Cards or console memory, that was the closest thing we got to save our progress in cartridges without inner memory.
remember how in Zombies Ate My Neighbors passwords were only four letters long? and when you entered them, you'd get to the stage you want with only the clothes on your back and the crappy water gun?
Ahhhh... i never thought about that. So the password itself isnt just simply to grant access, it is conveying information to the game? Thats cool.
