Isuzu engine is a cracking motor Baz better than this crap we have today, your work is so calm and therapeutic no moans and swearing just organised and you make it all straight forward 😇
Wow i love the old stuff.Look at all that room under there.Simple and easy and you can see the engine too thats not all buried in pipes and wires and god knows what.Great job Baz as always and have a great weekend.
I remember at work in 2011-2014 we had one of these, what a turd. It had done 350,000 miles. It was on its 3rd gearbox. Getting it started in the morning was an art and sometimes required a sniff of easy start. We were putting waste oil and tap water in it because it was burning so much. Oddly enough we lost the contract for the job it was doing and I drove it to the scrapyard myself before the MOT tester condemned it. The scrap man let me have the diesel out of it, the spare tyre and the battery from it which was in my dads car for many more years. I kind of missed the old girl afterwards. I spent quite a few nights on jobs sleeping in the back and pocketing the hotel money. 😂 F to pay respects.
@@gregshearer423 You have no idea mate. The main vehicles we had to pick from was that 1.7 Astra van. A diesel Corolla with no 3 or 4th gear and a Fiesta van with no working door handle. We had some destroyed Transit welfare vans and LDV van which was like an F reg. An idiot I work with wrote off the Corolla in a smash (rather him than me) and then we got a Peugeot Bipper diesel van a 14 plate. That thing was a dream. I was doing 200 miles a night in it.
@@zoidberg444 sounds like it lost its compression, we had a very sluggish Astra van F reg & it was the only sluggish one out the fleet with about 250,000 miles + on the clock , it was so underpowered, you couldn’t engage 5th gear due to lack of power & that was auctioned off when the fleet was renewed with 2002 52 reg first generation Ford transit connects , 75Bhp & very slow I must say ……
These 1.7 diesel engines come out in 1988 there were two types Vauxhall and Isuzu engines. The 1.7 replace the 1.6 diesel back in the 80s it was the best Vauxhall diesel engine at the time.❤
We had the Astra vans 1.7D in 1991 just 67Bhp , yet they flew everywhere , then in 1992 the 1.7TD arrived , OMG !! Even quicker (81Bhp I vaguely remember) but still very torquey , & just to reiterate, we had the later models in early 2000s with the Isuzu lump , still 81Bhp but seemed even quicker & very economical too .
Son in law had one, I did all the services on it, new pads and rotors at the last service, cheap as chips for parts. Sorted out the power steering issue and he frigging sold it to buy a Caddy, I prefer the vauxhall, possibly because i knew it inside out.
We had an astra with the 1.7 Isuzu engine. Car had over 800.000km when someone crashed into it. The only thing that was touched in the engine bay other than maintenance were several generators that broke like clockwork. It was like its was engineered to fail. Bought the next model and it needed a new engine after 10.000km. It was under 100.000km. Thank god it was still under guarantee...
We used these vans as site transport on Tarmac’s sites. They went everywhere through sh1te and rock etc. The crap used to get into the timing belt covers and cause the belts to snap. The site fitters became very adept at changing a timing belt, and there was always a stock in the stores. Great vans, took some abuse and came back for more ! 😂
This video could not have been dropped at a better time. I’m about to do the same job on mine. Cheers Baz. Hopefully I’ll get mine sent (and not to the scrappers 😂)
Best eBay purchase ever led strip light cable tied to a proper bonnet light plugged into the mains it's never going flat, just need to remember to turn it off at night when a car is in the air 😂😂
BMW's have the 2 bonnet catches sticking down out of the bonnet like prongs either side. They are ideal for absolutely monging your head off about 10 times a day when working on them. I do so like that idea the engineers came up with. Chap came over to see what I was cursing about when working on a 520 today - he promptly monged his head off one of the catches as he leaned in to speak.. I lolled.. then I took the bloomin bonnet off & chucked it into the office - best place for it till the works done. Loved these vans ^ as they were a terrific drive for a van - however they also liked crapping their ecu's for sport, which was a fly in the otherwise creamy ointment. Plus the space in the back was pants. Anything you needed out of them right now was always buried somewhere up the front of the loadspace behind all the other crap/tools you had in yours. However the cracking driving characteristics made you forgive it for being a slightly rubbish work-van. I seem to remember doing belts on these was a doddle.
Baz.... I have noticed the new cement square under your two post ramp was that put in as the floor was to thin for a two post ramp, I have a four inch thick concrete floor and would like to fit a two post ramp but I'm told my floor is to thin, could I do what you have done? I love your videos I am subbed and watch all of your stuff, sorry for the off the cuff question!!!!
@@terryjordan8930 ye when they came to install the ramp the floor wasn't thick enough so a concrete pad had to be out in, the workshop used to be an old pallet yard many moons ago. The whole garage is old but it's got character
Hi Baz. I've been asked to rescue a 2002 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 twin port after a lone ranger changed the timing chain I believe they haven't correctly timed the two pick up rings, the engine no longer fires. There's spark and fuel. Can you suggest how I correctly time the pick up rings ?
I was going to say just how amazingly good the underside is including plenty of paint still on the subframe unlike modern cars which are rusty as hell on the suspension parts after 4 years. Astra G cars were one of the first to have galvanised shells, not sure about the vans.
Had an 05 1.7cdti hatchback sports solid engine but in 12 months had the AA out 6 times blown main fuse then egr failed then alternator twice failed then handbrake seized on id had enough and traded it in for an 18 reg vitara 1.6 petrol which though underpowered was super reliable in 3 years no issues traded that for kia sportage now soon that'll be going in for maybe a 5008 suv.??😅
Seriously Baz, does anyone think your videos are staged? That’s just weird. Anyway, terrific job as always. As a German: it’s pronounced ‘Scheffler’ not ‘schaffler’, but who cares. Have a great weekend.

Cheap as chips AND easy to repair/maintain...

A very well looked after van, sounds great for the age of it, and the sub frame painted, hammerite white?
Thanks for sharing 🔧👌

Good stuff as usual. Quick question, what products do you use to clean the plastics/rubber in the engine bay?
Elbow grease and universal vinyl and rubber dressing

Still going after 20 years these modern cars won't be around in ten years 😊
Some don't even make it passed 5 years
Seen a few of these with intergalactic mileage.
Cut my teeth on these back in day as a young apprentice. I got the nick name the cambelt kid at the Vauxhall dealer I worked at😂

Need to tighten pivot screw on ratchet baz 👍
Use a block of wood on that sump.... spread the weight over a larger area = less chance of damage.

Check the timing with the pins and go from there, and read the fault codes
There's a TSB for battery fires on the 1.7 Vauxhalls .... Tick Tock
I’m amazed the bodywork hasn’t given up on that. The subframe looks like it’s about to give up though.
