  • I was offered this Hornby "Mallard" by Richard as a donation to sell on ebay for charity. He bought it pre-owned from Hattons but never managed to get it running well.
The profits of the sale will be donated to the Disasters Emergency Committee to aid relief in Turkey and Syria following the earthquake.
    Thanks to Richard.

She’s running beautifully, nice overhaul. I’m holding my breath for your next videos, will definitely miss this layout. Good luck with everything!

yes, I have the same issue of trying to get the motor out of the tender frame. It looks like the metal motor block forms a clip into the plastic tender frame (the clip part is visible when looking underneath behind the tender drawbar pin). From this video looks like considerable force and a strong screwdriver was needed! Watching this gives confidence that the tender frame is fairly robust!

After a lot of effort, I got the motor out of the tender!

Thanks for doing such a great job to get the train running again Bill. When I first got her, she ran a little but the wheels of the loco would stick. Then the traction tyres must have come off without me realising! Great to finally see her going so well. She looks fantastic. All the best

The loco wheels were locking mostly because the axles were gunked up with dry lubricant and the valve gear on the right side was kicking a little which was due to the rod catching in the slot in the cylinder. Runs fine now so thanks again and it's fetching a good sum!

A4s are the best locos to repair and get running aqain in my opinion anyway. Thanks for another interesting video

    Very nice job.
I had one of these and loved it, when an 18 yo, a mere 45 years ago!
Nice to see one still in very rude health.

Be a sad time to see the old layout go, but exciting to see your new layout progress.

Another excellent example of careful and methodical working Bill, thank you. It is always reassuring to see 'an expert' make a simple mistake putting those tenders back together, and as for those motions, well, get it right and great, get it wrong and it's trouble! Quite agree with your charity intention.

I gained confidence and knowledge to service my models from your videos, so thanks for sharing. One of the first I did was my Mallard, looks to be the same one (from 1991-2). I’ve got to relook at it, cause I have the same engine driving wheel locking issue. I also previously mixed up the wheels and had to undo and relink the linkages multiple times (more from naivety, than error!) I found the linkages go back together quite easily if they are arranged in a certain way. The ‘piston rod’ kept coming out of the cylinder quite easily and the whole linkage I found got tangled / locked up really easily too!

Brilliant repair and great that it will help those affected by the earthquake. I have the same model and think it's great. Shows what some TLC can do. Thanks for showing. Regards Paul.

Oh Bill, an excellent service, if only all may sometimes appear to be that simple. The pickups on the loco are always the challenge to get just right. Going to so miss the current layout but the new one is going to be fantastic, knowing what you have achieved on current the new will surpass it. All best and looking forward to the next layout update, Marc from Leighton Buzzard

    Hi Bill.
Another excellent job that's well done.
It's a shame that we will be saying goodbye to your current layout as so much has gone into building it but, that's progress for you. How about auctioning it with the proceeds going to a charity like the Great Ormond Street Hospital for children?
    Paul. 👍

I particularly enjoyed this as I recently did similar work on my Mallard from around the 1980s, though mine is in LNER blue. I also hate removing the motor housing from the tender chassis as no matter how careful you are with a screwdriver the plastic always gets distorted, which is annoying considering the motor itself is virtually indestructible. But a classic model nonetheless.

Thanks to your videos, I’ve serviced my ‘Mighty Mallard’ (the same one as this) after 30 years in storage and got it running again. Only problem is, some of the metal tyres on the engine driving wheels have come loose. Any ideas how to re-secure them? I
I know fitting the real things they heat them up, fit them and as the metal cools it contracts onto the wheel. But I’m not convinced that’s the right thing to do here!

Hi Bill, As this is going to be one of the last models you will repair on this layout does that mean you have finalised the track plan for your new layout.

Hi bill. Great video. Do you happen to know the part number for that size of traction tyres? I keep buying the wrong size (despite what the supplier describes them as!). I may have to try bullfrog snot (bless it's little cotton socks!!) kindest regards.
