  • Owen got in touch with me from Australia asking if I would like to have this Hornby 'Super Detail' Class A4 "Mallard" as a donation. He said it was a non runner and that he'd like to see it run again and feature in one of my videos.
    Thanks very much to Owen for his generosity in sending me this especially from so far away!

    I waited till after work to watch this, I’m so glad it arrived safely and I had faith you’d bring it back to the rails! Looks wondrous running around the new layout! I’m glad you like it and that your viewers could enjoy seeing it repaired too. Cheers Bill!

      I'd have had it if you'd asked 😂 hahahah
      Great donation. Watch this back after work later.

    There are two other benefits of using a light coloured towel: the components are easier to see and tend to embed themselves in the towel, as opposed to pinging off into the abyss, and there's far less chance of damaging the bodywork.

    Well Bill you make separating motor and chassis look easy, and you kindly replied when I emailed you about it. It was a struggle but it worked (!!!!!!). Your attitude is inspirational as well as entertaining; all this for a cup of coffee and that is optional. So after 3x X03 locos fixed this is my first Ringfield attempt; looks like my grandson will get his Mallard after all.

    I usually use Kapton tape for holding things in place. The loco looks quite nice.
    I've only got Railroad A4's as I'm mainly an LMS guy. Glad you got it sorted.

    Hi Bill.
    Another good job well done!
    I like the way you go into the bedroom, change your t-shirt, then come back in and pretend it's the next day. Very dramatic! 😁

    I especially liked the fault-finding on the main chassis. Thank you also for being so honest and showing your mistakes. Was it not typical for one the fine wires to break?

    Great video as ever Bill, there are plenty of scunners on here who’ll tell you that you should do this or that but you know what you’re doing. For wires I use black tack, but it can get awful messy, or kapton tape.

    A4's are fabulous! IMO whilst early Hornby models - including the lovely example in this video - have better mechanisms, the early spilt chassis Bachmann's are more detailed, even though the nose profile is not quite right. But by the time this version came out Hornby had closed the detailing gap.

    Yes, Kapton Tape is good.
    Another great service video. A beautiful loco.
    The trouble with them being made in China is, the designers are here in the UK. Any issues cannot be solved on the spot. They have to send a loco to Margate the look at the problem. The new design is then sent to China and if that has any issues, we start all over.

    Kapton tape is very good. Very insulating, and very thin.

    A good adhesive tape to hold wires down to a plastic chassis would be the black canvas type sticky tape, which has a quite thick, white tacky adhesive glue and will stick quite well to pretty much anything

    Enjoyable and informative video Bill.
    A suggestion for a somewhat different future video...if you have the guts to risk ruining your old-style Hornby LNER teak coaches..!
    I have seen a couple of people using carefully applied brown washes and even wood stains to make the bare plastic finish on these coaches less bleached looking and more lifelike. Followed up by painting the solebars teak (or is it oxide?) and the roof sections on the removable end panels to match the rest of the roof.
    I'd love to see how you get on with that!

    I have used strips of duct tape to hold wires in place and it has lasted for years, there is always the "gorilla" tape which is available here in Canada I dont know about the UK

    I've got a Bachmann split chassis Mallard. Axle cracks aplenty and one of the side rods has fallen off too.
    Shame, as the detail is great.

    China designed 'improved' tender pick-ups. Supposedly there is sufficient contact of the traction tyred wheel flanges with the rail head to make it worthwhile

    Greta video bill! Ive got a bachmann spectrum loco 4-8-4 that i think has quatering issues as the motor spins but the wheels will lock up and not move.... do you have any tips on how i might be able to fix it?
    Thanks, Jack

    • @platformten5958
      @platformten5958 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Jack.
      It may not necessarily be a quartering issue. If you know what position quartered wheels on one side should be in relation to the wheels on the other side, then you would know for sure the wheels etc. are out of alignment. You may have a bent con-rod or bent valve gear. I don't imagine Bill would diagnose the problem without having the loco in front of him as a problem is not always what you think it is. Try posting your loco to Bill and asking kindly if he will have a look at it.
      Ciao,
      Paul. 👍

    Have you ever tried to put a 5 pole Ringfield armature in a older Hornby Ringfield motor chassis?

    • @smithge4uk
      @smithge4uk 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The pinion is 10T on a 5-pole, rather than 11T on a 3-pole. Plus the intermediate gears are different tooth count. Its said you *cant* sub a 5 pole for a 3 pole. Anyone want to try?
