  • I was sent this Hornby Class A4 "Silver Link" by a chap called Stephen who said there was an issue with the rods hitting the body and he'd accidentally broken a crank screw trying to repair it.

Great repair video! I was surprised how clean you get the broken screw out.

    Hi Bill.
    Another great repair.
Got a hobby tender driven Mallard, one of my best runners. However got a Bachmann loco driven not so good de Rails all the time.
    Thanks Bill.
    Thumbs up thumped 👍

Surprised you didn’t change the alloy pinion gear for a brass one, a must in my opinion. The alloy ones wear and just spin, the brass grip the shaft much better. Great video as always Bill.

Another satisfying repair and running session. Looking forward to seeing a bit of track lighting in the future. It gave your old layout a bit of life. Thanks.

Not the most detailed loco but it does look rather good with the teak coaches evokes images of a more luxurious time of travel 😊

I was worried about right and left radiuses as the wheels shift, but it sounded and looked fine in the end. Great video, Jersey Bill

    Nice job, Bill, as ever.
I think I would be taking the coupling off the front pony truck - I doubt an A4 ever hauled anything tender-first! I know that is owners choice.
But she does look good with Gresley teaks in tow.

I was surprised to find this model was made in Margate. It looks really good for the age and runs spectacularly. Even some painted cab details which I assume were done in the factory.

Hornby was much better when they made the models in Margate, Kent you could easy require the spare parts from them. China models phew rubbish ones.

Couldn't help noticing SHUG taking a keen interest in the detached rods.
Your running sessions are excellent. Have you thought about doing "themed" sessions, and explaining why you've chosen what to run?

Hi ,Oh Oh Bill. So this is not one of your favourite liveries ? Its gorgeous, especially if you have the matching coaches to go with, which I have. I have a real soft spot for the A4's. I have fourteen of them in my collection including all four of the silver grey one's. Two of each colour with different names and numbers plus the four silver one's. A bit much I know but I do love them. Nice to see her running on your track with teak coaches. Good video, thanks.

Good to see another repair it seems a lot of people tend to over lubricate

Although it did not look too promising to start with, that was A Great Fix - I’m guessing that’s a “Railroad Model” which looks the Part when it was running. The Silver Link & Silver Fox had a set of Grey Stanier Coaches to match it if I remember correctly. 👍🏻

Handrail knobs often break. I'm looking at finding replacement brass ones and having spent a fair bit..... I'm no closer to finding a direct swap. I'll leave another comment if i find anything. Main issue is that the hornby handrail wire is so thick compared to contemporary models'.
I've been lucky with broken screws always breaking and leaving a burr to get pliers round, glad it drilled out. Thank goodness there are spare cranks!

I had a similar issue with my N scale Hiawatha. I resolved it by removing and reinstalling the shell. I guess it got knocked about during shipping.

See FAQ in description for details on contacting me. Sounds like a replacement part would be needed though.
