Took my dad on a car and train museum European tour for his 80th birthday. And wonderland was on our list and we spent a full day. Third people in and the locked the door when we left. Truly wonderful setup.
This is true and this visitor is not coming from Mars as questioned at 12:57 but from Oxxo. And if you want to call one of them, you need to fart at the stars at night… Don't expect any subtlety with this movie.
Thanks, Dawn. Much more developed than in the last video I saw of it. I wouldn't think a water-based window cleaner would have done the track much good.
Great video of an amazing place! I visited Miniatur Wunderland last summer, we spend around 6 hours there, and if we wouldn't have a Bruce Springsteen concert to visit, we would have stayed even longer. So much to see, such attention to detail, and so many little jokes everywhere. Highly recommended! And Hamburg as a whole was wonderful city, it really surprised me! One tip though: Get your tickets for Miniatur Wunderland well in advance! I tried to get mine two weeks before our visit, but despite the the honestly insane opening hours (from 7 AM until midnight!), regular tickets were already sold out. Instead we had to buy some "VR experience" tickets (and didn't actually do that experience). But glad we did, as the line to buy a ticket at the spot was just crazy. And if you have the chance, be sure to visit Small Worlds Tokyo! Kinda similar, not quite as grand, but a lot more quirky. With several anime-inspired layouts, an amazing space layout with the past, present and future of space exploration, steampunk fantasy Europa and Asia, an even larger airport, and so much more!
Miniatur Wunderland's own TH-cam channel is very interesting (and all subtitled in English, thank goodness, as the Hamburg accent is hard for my schoolboy German!). There are whole series of videos on the airport & the Monaco F1 that i found fascinating. It's all an incredible combination of superb modelling, clever miniature engineering, and some remarkable computer programming.
Excellent.👍 Poor old “grumpy”, only happy when he’s being miserable! Had the pleasure of visiting Miniature Wunderland with some friends back in April. Spent two days looking round and still didn’t get to see everything. Missed out on Monaco as it opened the week after we were there. A good enough reason for a re-visit I think! 🤞
Oh yes - go again. And if you time it right, you'll see the Amazon and Atacama Desert (due to open in 2025). Make sure you check the dates though as it would be sad go the day after these open... unless you need an excuse for a third visit?! ;-)
An absolutely outstanding view of this model marvel. You and Grumpy have done yourself proud with the filming and presentation. As to British outline non availability of spares that doesn't surprise me. They don't seem to have that problem with continental models!! I wonder how Pete Waterman gets on with that problem and his large layout!! But it would be nice to see such an amazing exhibition of that size and quality in the UK. One can only but hope!!!!
Brilliant report of this sensational model railroad. To show all parts from Miniatur Wunderland in about 30 minutes is not possible, but I missed the real water-section in Scandinavia with swimming models like AIDAblu and other beautiful moving ships. I've been there in Hamburg more than 20 times, but each visit is a new adventure, and I allways find new or never before viewed details. 💞
Wow - 20 times! You must be an expert by now :-) Thank you for the feedback. Yes, impossible to get everything in in 30 minutes - and we could go there 100 times and get 100 different videos and still not have shown it all. Next time... hoping to visit when the Amazon rainforest is finished.
Again, as always, a very interesting video, the last time I was in Hamburg was 1973, sadly this exhibit was still a long time off. However, did manage to see Stream still working into Hamburg Haupt Bahnhof, my ship was in Bremerhaven, tank cleaning and washing, due to our next cargo being 10, tons of various grades of engine oil. Bound for Durban, Mombasa and Port Sudan (Red Sea). Take care and thank you.
Thank you for your excellent video of Miniatur Wunderland. For my next tour, I'm at the stage of picking one or maybe two exhibits to really focus on and appreciate the details. One my first visit, I booked the back stage tour, (available in English) which was fascinating. I saw Monaco as a work in progress a couple of week before C19 lockdown... and it was a joy to see it completed when I returned to visit in May. I am new to the MRQ channel but catching up.
Wow Dawn, thank you for this incredible journey, i left NL in 2000 and never had the opportunity to visit- what a great place and video - Thank you so much. I did " Eurostar" in 2019 from Gare du Lyon to St Pancras for the first time 😊 Thank you again for this great vid ❤ And Grumpy. ....have a beer before you travel with Dawn....🤣🤣
Brilliant Dawn, you and Grumpy have done a fantastic job on this video. I can't wait to show it to Dylan when I see him next. The only downside is that they don't have anything Dylington Custard related 😂. Excellent video... Cheers James 🙂👍
Thank you! You know, Im sure there must be custard in there somewhere - there's a lot to see, impossible to see all in one go. Though when they do the GB version perhaps Dylan can suggest a custard cameo?
@modelrailwayquest that would be fun. In fact, there's a future idea for a cameo in one of your future builds. Dylan is really enjoying his 009 build at the moment...😁👍
I live in Hamburg and visited Wunderland more than ten times. I always find something new. It's impossible to get every detail in a lifetime. Also what was shown here is only a small glimpse what is really there.
I agree - we could go 100 times and make a 100 videos and 1) they would all be different and 2) we still wouldn't be able to capture the whole experience!
Must get this on my to do list. Fantastic, and clearly well managed and maintained. I was wondering just how many staff are working there? 400 - I should have taken notice. Dave
@@modelrailwayquest they made a little model of him in one of his loud jackets. Also, forgive me, there were some models if a porn film bring shit. Sorry
I especially liked the behind the scenes discussions, it's hard to imagine how much work went into this. Just curious what you would include if you did the UK portion of Wunderland. I'm from the United States, so my ideas are probably not all that good, but I'd be thinking Brunel landmarks, railway arches, canals with locks and Heritage Railways.
Hi Dawn, Looks like you had a great time. It certainly an impressive set up they have in Hamburg. We spent a good half a day there. I even wanted to go back on our second day, but the wife wasn’t having it! 😂😂
Using a Roco rubber then wiping with window cleaner makes sense. Roco track rubbers are less abrasive than some others on the market. The window cleaner is non abrasive and will help loosen any dirt and debris which is then wiped away.

I didn't see the mine explosion - but then, there's so much to see, it was impossible to see it all in 7 hours. Must go back! I thought the restaurant prices were very reasonable - a limited menu but very decent.
That's beautiful layout enjoying watching again love it makes my looks very small it's 10x10 ' I'm not done with it yet but I'm working on it I have about 200 railcars and 150 locomotives 🚂👌👍😃😎♥️♥️
Brillant. A very informative video of a tremendous model railway experience. The rough sea in the "Antarctica/Patagonia" bit was very realistic, will have to find out more about how that was done. When you travelled from St Pancras to Hamburg, did you do the journety in one day, or where would you recommend breaking the trip?
It was one day - left the UK at approx 6am, arrived in Hamburg by the early evening. We just carried on straight through because we were on a tight schedule - but you can stop at Brussels or Cologne along the way or lots of other lovely places.
@@modelrailwayquest Thanks for the info, easy enough to fly to Hamburg but going by train would add a lot to the experience plus a lot more interesting and ecologically sound! Very useful to know it can be done in one day. Looking into this now as Miniatur Wunderland has been on my bucket list for too long.

Superb and I was thinking after seeing the level of detail in this, one may as well just pack up your layout and put it all back in the box until...you said they have 400 employees so that made me feel abit better. I did love the German trains - though DB kept cancelling the one we wanted and we had to keep changing our plans! Other than that - all very smooth sailing. And yes, if we go down the route of comparing, then it would be easy to feel demoralised by the level of detail when comparing to our own efforts... but with 400 employees, then it all makes sense! :-)
As far as I know 70 employees are into construction , modelism ,software , planing . I mean those who made up the layouts . the other employees have other jobs .
Another great video Dawn. Can I ask if the £69 was just for the Eurostar to Brussels, and if so, did you pre-book the ICE train to Hamburg and how much this journey was? It’s something my model railway club are interested in doing. Thanks.
Excellent! Regarding spares, I guess they could buy at least duplicate UK models and use the additional one(s) for spares. It does make one wonder how the continental manufacturers manage to supply spares though. Do they standardise more? Do they make more locally? It would be interesting to know if the operators of Miniatur Wunderland find that certain parts wear out more than others.
Interesting about the track cleaning. So what method. I assume they won't spray the track, and then use the track rubber, or is the track rubber sprayed with the cleaner.
Whenever we do a road trip for MRQ, Grumpy insists on taking the most indirect route... Watch this space, if we ever do a video from the US, it will be via a train across Mongolia!
Thankfully the Brauns did. This is a work of love rather than a money grab, exemplified by the decisions of the Brauns on several occasions to allow free attendance for people who cannot afford the entry fee.
Great video, Just goes to show that they wont build a british layout because of not being able to get parts, bloody typical. Just goes to show how bloody crap we are and how much business we lose because of problems we have in supplying parts.
That's a shame - the information says you can buy tickets at the cash desk there - but advises you go very early or late to avoid the crowds. Maybe they need to change their website info?
I wonder if the costs of paperwork post Brexit are a factor too in Hornby's reluctance? Seems a short sighted attitude as arguably it is even a form of free advertising.
What a Load of crock, Hornby spares, this is the country where the Railways were invented and they cannot build a UK layout because of the lack of Hornby spares, Shame on you Hornby
hi pat squires here, have you got a model railway that you have built yourself ? if not WHY ? i think its great to see women coming into the hobby which is obviously domenated by men, i love your videos , but you must show your model building talent ? regards, pat squires
Hi Pat - my model railway layout is Brief Encounter Monochrome, which I talk about (quite a lot!)... and I'm just starting my next layout based on The Ladykillers which I am creating as a series of tutorials. Just go outside and find the first railway model shop in Hamburg. Much of what you see at Wunderland is based on commercially available models such as figurines from Preiser/Merten and Noch, road vehicles from Herpa, Wiking, Busch, ... Trains from Märklin, Roco, ... Much more interesting than a mug with "Wunderland" printed on it.

Aahhh... I see! I've just googled it. Who knew! Planet Oxo - love it!
You should get Modellu to do a 3D scan of Siddy Holloway and then give Grumpy a miniature version!!!!!
Don't give him ideas! :-)
My son wanted to visit it but found out he could only buy a ticket in advance online. Waiting time for his entry was 4 weeks.
That's a shame - the information says you can buy tickets at the cash desk there - but advises you go very early or late to avoid the crowds. Maybe they need to change their website info?
you also have to check out their cinema movie " wunderland "
I will - it looks really fun!
👍👍👍
Siddy Holloway?
(Titfield Thunderbolt) Stanley Holloway would score more points for me!!
I wonder if the costs of paperwork post Brexit are a factor too in Hornby's reluctance? Seems a short sighted attitude as arguably it is even a form of free advertising.
Apparently the 1940 spirit still reigns at Hornby.
👍👍👍❤❤❤🚂🚂🚂
You can find Episode 1 here: th-cam.com/video/lpraK7_h5nI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-8JZC5G5SyFZAsc3 and Episode 2 coming this week.
@@modelrailwayquest i have been working on my model for over 3 years now, i started by building a lot of the models before i even had a baseboard ! now i have a layout in a shed 26ft by 12 ft and it will take me at least another 5 years to get anywhere finishing it
Did you know siddy is heavily pregnant ?
I did yes :-)
The merchandise store is honestly really disappointing in the Wunderland.
.... and there's always someone who has something to complain about, even if it's just about merchandise. You can only be German... Complaining.... grumble.... grumble. The toilet paper was probably too rough too
Just go outside and find the first railway model shop in Hamburg. Much of what you see at Wunderland is based on commercially available models such as figurines from Preiser/Merten and Noch, road vehicles from Herpa, Wiking, Busch, ... Trains from Märklin, Roco, ... Much more interesting than a mug with "Wunderland" printed on it.
