    My good friend BigRig sent me four different 3D printed ocarinas.
    I test all of them here and provide my input, and HE gives some awesome background on the process behind making them. Check out his channel, linked above, for the other side of this collab focusing on the making-of and more videos on 3D printing and other creations.

    I designed the 'round smooth boy' and appreciate this candid review! The ease of 3D printing without any support whatsoever was the priority; nonetheless, I think I'll revisit it's play position and breath pressure. Thanks for the quality video!

    I designed the Soprano/Small Blue Boy! Thank you for reviewing it!
    Sorry the high notes weren't there - this small size makes the print really finicky and can give mixed results even when changing plastic brands >_<
    If you ever want another one, I would be happy to send you one from my printer ^_^ The highest 2 notes will still be a bit wonky.

    I literally started a channel over this. People print stuff out and judge it when it doesn’t work, when they don’t even know how to play! You, a professional, passed a judgement on that old ocarina as unplayable simply because it’s operation was a little different from what you were used to. I loved this, thank you so much for your expert opinion. I hope you give more 3D printed objects a chance in the future.

    PSA!!! You can use Milliput with water on your fingers to tune the Ocarina!!! Get a small amount of mixed milliput, wet your fingers and glided it around the holes of the Ocarina. Use a small knife to flatten the inner parts of that little air exhaust with milliput. The results add a much tighter sound and a sanding stick can undo the changes made by the milliput.

    You could probably mold clay around a 3d printed ocarina and fire it to remove the plastic. It would be easy to punch the holes out with the plastic scaffolding while the clay is still wet. The only thing you might want to do if you tried this is shrink the 3d print so the clay is to the desired size after you fire it. Im not sure how ceramic ocarinas are made but this might be a really easy way to produce one

  • @daviddavidson2357

    I suggest you try the V0N3 by EC.
    It got me into ocs, reason I picked it was the fact it was small, weighed only 35g (so about a dollar fifty with materials and crazy high electricity prices taken into account, probably about 70c in the US) took about 2 hours to print (though I ran my printer maybe too fast for a precision instrument, I'll probably do one at half the print speed and see how it turns out), it's can't play the highest notes very well but also requires very low, almost linear-flat breath pressure. Size of a soprano but has baffles in it which make it an alto, tested with a tuner all of the notes up to about the high E are in tune (they all may be if I print slower, get the seam just right and tweak a few settings), the only thing I have to compare it to is an Awef one and the VON3 hits and holds notes better in most cases. It's also pretty quiet, about half the volume of the Awef, so good to play at night.
    Get one printed, try it out. It's only 10 hole, but that's not a huge issue.

    • @e.can3254
      @e.can3254 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Also, did you design them?
      Edit, yep, you did, pfp and username checks out.
      I'll check out the 12 hole.
      Any recommendations for print settings other than what you have on the page? Using black PLA+, the low notes are great, but the highs are a bit airy, printer is a (modified, E3D hemera extruder, dual Z) ender 3V2, I guess slowing my print speed down to about 75mm/s (from 95mm/s, octoprint marlin) is a good place to start, yeah?
      PS, giving that soprano a go now, printing it fast, looks good in the slicer.
      Ever think of designing a multi chamber oc?

    • @e.can3254
      @e.can3254 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@daviddavidson2357 Yeah, my designs.
      Just print it like the V0N3, use 5mm brim and you should be fine.

    • @daviddavidson2357
      @daviddavidson2357 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@e.can3254 Thanks. It just finished printing, unfortunately something seems to have gone wrong with the labium, it seems to have been pulled in and deflected to the Y axis (I printed 45° but assume the widest part of the ocarina is on the X axis) which is an odd type of warping to have in PLA+, probably a result of me printing so fast in marlin.
      I'll give it another slow go another day. It looks amazing.
      Out of curiosity, would it be possible to design a ocarina where you insert the mouthpiece windway, voicing and labium after printing it as a seperate part, then use glue/ weld with solvent cement (ethyl acetate might work for this) the two parts together afterwards?
      This might be a good way to design 3d printed ocarinas whilst minimising wastage from failed prints. Have the parts which are often much smaller, but also critical to the function of the instrument print as a seperate part that is slotted in, tested and then if it works well, is glued/welded into place permanently.
      Also, on the topic of 3d printed wind instruments, I don't have the CAD ability to make it, but a 'compound whistle' would be cool. 8 to 10 whistles in a linear arrangement, with a singular mouthpiece with the same amount of holes to let air out of each whistle (8 or 10), each whistle would produce a different note, so chords would be possible on it by covering some holes with your fingers. Even the distance air has to travel to each whistle could be made equal by having a zig zag or helical pattern to the farthest whistle. It seems like something which would be hard to traditionally manufacture, but fairly easy to print. I assume it would sound like a high pitched pipe organ, maybe also take lungs of steel to play.
