My neighbor told me that when he was a kid he put brass thumbtacks on the hammers of his school's piano to get the "twang" sound to jazz up "boogie woogie" songs. He said he got into a lot trouble for it, but that it worked! He demonstrated this on his own piano at home and it gave the piano a very unique sound.
That's a rather common technique, if you play ragtime on it: instant Saloon feeling. It's known as a tack piano. By modifying the hammers you(or someone with the right tools) can also make it more mellow

I recommend looking up “gordo drummer” he drums on buckets from your average hardware store and makes it sound amazing. Also the “marble machine” it’s basically a music box on steroids and it’s extremely interesting and sounds wonderful

You can create something with that principle like connecting led lights so each time the hammer strikes the piano wires they will light up. You can now also use your piano as a midi controller or map out the piano keys with just about anything. Surprise us.
I like this idea....an old-school way of making new technology come to life. Each string could be a different degree - or shade of color....in a rainbow effect or a prism effect. OR...each string could be wired to a different telegraph key and you could hammer out coded messages. For instance, if you played a Wagner piece it would mean the Nazis are coming....but if you played the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" it would mean that California finally fell into the ocean....and on and on it goes.
The curtain is prevelant for schools and musicians playing in places with thin walls. It softens the sound and some pedals even slide over to the side to "lock" the cloth in place, so it's constantly soft
Now call the piano technician. Tell him that your piano hammers need "voicing" and "needling". "Voicing" is the process of shaping the hammers to adjust tone quality. "Needling" is a process of "fluffing up" hammers that become compacted over time. (I'd like to thank Aaron from the Music Practice & Theory Stack Exchange website for explaining these two words).

I had a band instructor in high school in 1970 who accomplished almost the very same sound you got. Only he just put large thumbtacks on the ends of the felt hammers. Very simple. Then I also heard of some old-time honkytonks that used to hang a light chain from one end to the other across the strings so that anytime a string would vibrate, the chain would rattle and continue to rattle as long as the vibration lasted. Sounded pretty good on some Dixieland type stuff but not very good on Gospel music.

All the the Swedish guy needed to do is to put old fashioned push pines on the felt hammers and he would get this steel hammer sound he wanted. Total cost is twenty bucks, total time 30 min. Here is Russian engineering for you from a Russian. And i know it works because i have already done it as a child.
For those who like the sound, there is a thing called a 'mandolin rail', that uses the same mechanism as the silencing "curtain" shown here, but instead of a piece of felt, it's strips of cloth or leather with a little metal tab on the end that drops down between the hammer and the string to give you the same bright metallic sound as in this video, but without destroying the playing feel of the piano. :-)

I take it you've heard of 'Prepared pianos' ? They've been around a long time though I think they were usually modifications you can undo quite easily
