Please get in contact with Nils Frahm. He is a really talented musician who has a philosophy that every piano has a song it wants to play. i'd love to see what he does with your pianos

Hire a composer to compose a piece specifically for that instrument (and then a musician to perform it).

My neighbor told me that when he was a kid he put brass thumbtacks on the hammers of his school's piano to get the "twang" sound to jazz up "boogie woogie" songs. He said he got into a lot trouble for it, but that it worked! He demonstrated this on his own piano at home and it gave the piano a very unique sound.

The hammers and piano wires are both conductors of electricity. You can create something with that principle like connecting led lights so each time the hammer strikes the piano wires they will light up. You can now also use your piano as a midi controller or map out the piano keys with just about anything. Surprise us.

I like this idea....an old-school way of making new technology come to life. Each string could be a different degree - or shade of color....in a rainbow effect or a prism effect. OR...each string could be wired to a different telegraph key and you could hammer out coded messages. For instance, if you played a Wagner piece it would mean the Nazis are coming....but if you played the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" it would mean that California finally fell into the ocean....and on and on it goes.

The "curtains" are for extreme soft tone, for quiet practice so as not to disturb other people -- someone sleeping in another room, etc. I have seen several pianos with these in these in the USA, though they are not universally common.
By the way, a very similar sound to your metal hammer heads is obtainable by simply putting metal thumb tacks into the felt heads. The American composer Lou Harrison wrote some pieces for thumbtack piano; no doubt there are others too. This would be lot less work, wouldn't make the key action any heavier, and is of course easily reversible.

I had a band instructor in high school in 1970 who accomplished almost the very same sound you got. Only he just put large thumbtacks on the ends of the felt hammers. Very simple. Then I also heard of some old-time honkytonks that used to hang a light chain from one end to the other across the strings so that anytime a string would vibrate, the chain would rattle and continue to rattle as long as the vibration lasted. Sounded pretty good on some Dixieland type stuff but not very good on Gospel music.

Now call the piano technician. Tell him that your piano hammers need "voicing" and "needling".
"Voicing" is the process of shaping the hammers to adjust tone quality.
"Needling" is a process of "fluffing up" hammers that become compacted over time.

For those who like the sound, there is a thing called a 'mandolin rail', that uses the same mechanism as the silencing "curtain" shown here, but instead of a piece of felt, it's strips of cloth or leather with a little metal tab on the end that drops down between the hammer and the string to give you the same bright metallic sound as in this video, but without destroying the playing feel of the piano. :-)

But they don’t make the hammers weight 10x hehe😉Nice tip sir!

    *No one:*
*Matthias Krantz:* Have you ever wonder what a piano would sound like with actual hammers?
*Me:* No but now I do.

It would be fascinating if you could do one (or all) of these:
    -replace strings with harp strings
    -replace strings with banjo strings
    -replace strings with carbon fiber

    • @rtyzxc
      @rtyzxc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, this is unique opportunity to combine metal hammers with different strings.

wouldn't that just make a harpsichord if he added harp strings (this is a joke)
