- Learn about 6 horrendous mistakes I've made as a graphic designer, and how you can avoid them in your very own design workflow. It is a really smart thing to learn from other peoples' mistakes, and so in todays video you can learn from mine!
I actually still make a few of these mistakes from time to time, nobody is perfect. However,. if you are aware of the mistakes you are making, maybe you can then address them and improve. Without knowing where we are going wrong, we are unable to better ourselves, so we first need to look at our weaknesses and our faults as a graphic designer.
The graphic design industry is full of designers and creatives, and so if you want to have an edge over the vast majority of people out there, understanding where you are going wrong is going to help a whole lot to achieve that.

"The trouble with most of us is that we'd rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism" is hitting me
One of the biggest mistakes I made as an amateur designer is that whenever I get approached by a potential client and I get asked on how much I charge, I tend to get really anxious that if I say a higher number the client can't afford, I will somehow lose . Not knowing that I should not be that way even if it was at the cost of losing clients. Because eventually there are just as many clients that do value the work graphic designers do, and do not see design as just a pleasing imagery.

@@christophergarcia44 Many have walked through this phase. You just need to be reminded to stick to your values and market yourself to the right people that appreciate what you do! Anything can be underrated when it's held by the wrong hands.
So many designers I have known has just ignored the client's budget and give WAY more than they should. If a customer wants to pay only £50 for a letterhead they'll get a pretty average result. If they spend £500 I'll take a lot more time and care. And I tell the client this. However some of my staff in the past has taken two or three days to earn just £100 - and wonder why I'm upset!

Not reviewing professional Graphic Designer's work as my benchmarks. That's my hella big mistake.
Failing to stay in the loop💔
Not making notes of some ideas
Peer review meetings reading Mayfair magazine instead of taking notes but that was 40 years ago
going to uni getting into 27k of debt to be shown the pen tool in ai. when i left uni i learnt ai and ps more in 3 months than i did at uni

yes this is very big mistakes and thank you for highlighting ....... that's why some graphic designers not successful, they hurt by their own mistakes.

My biggest mistakes are: bad communication with the client and failing to prepare an effective brief, and those two go hand in hand. You can't have a successful project without good communication.
i ain't even a graphics kinda' person (although i do dabble in web development, but mostly i prefer the technical aspect rather than the visual), and i love watching these videos coz i can *still* get something out of 'em.

I might do, but one thing I have found invaluable is hiring freelancers to do jobs for me to free up time. You need to spend money to make money

I wouldn't be able to get to where I am today without hiring people to edit my videos or make motion graphics, simply because there is only a certain amount one person can do in 24hours. I thought the same way you do now, up until about 3 years ago

Research the graphic design process on Google, if you go through it properly and take the time, you should generate ideas 👍
there's a website called designspiration.com it can help you alot if you ideas just search logos for example or posters and it will give you some ideas

Oof... I clicked on it because I just made a dumb mistake after rushing with my work without proofing very well. I've become better at it, but still make them, when I'm really tired etc. You almost need to take a break before you send anything off.

It's funny how many people try to be trend setters, when they have zero authority or reach in the industry. The world doesn't work like that. It's similar to someone trying to influence the stock market with a $50 share, it won't happen. Whales and huge influencers move the stock market, and the same goes for the design industry.
