    I have actually been thinking of leaving design altogether. I just started a new job and found out all of creative was laid off. Now all design that came from a 10 person team is resting in 2 peoples shoulders. Corporations always do this and it makes me want to just find another career there all I have to do is fill out a spreadsheet.

      Design is not valued enough, in some places more than others though. And design is hard because if you dont find a place where you love the product or the work, you will feel like shit because the work is not fulfilling you.

    Occasionally I look around on job sites for Graphic Design listings and they tend to have seemingly unrealistic expectations and even worse requirements. More over, I see this often times for "entry level' Junior Designer positions, even intern/externships wanting 3d(Blender or C4D) and or animation skills. I can only assume the people listing these dont work with or in a Design department. BUT, it gets worse when you read reviews about the companies that reinforce these requirements/preferred skills.
    It is rather discouraging to see this, especially when a majority of places actually want someone that meets or exceeds their expectations(probably for as little as they can pay). Granted Ive been learning Design for 6 months now, but crap like this is quite imposter syndrome inducing indeed. At least it makes me feel like I have MUCH further to go or that Ill never get there. I've been told to not bother with these places and to try freelance to supplement a day job or better yet pursue an smaller agency who shares your interests/styles as you said. Im not interested in making bank(stability is nice tho) just doing what I love and am passionate about and to get by doing it. Makes me wonder if AI will take over these corporate "opportunities", as many seem to speculate.

    Awesome video, particularly what you said about agencies. I work as a Learning Designer, basically writing/designing/storytelling for educational and learning experiences. I worked in an agency and it was exactly as you described. It was exhausting and I was working until 9 or 10pm every night, just to meet client demands. My work/life balance was a mess and I was barely seeing my girlfriend. Anyway, I got to a point where I found some courage and pushed back to management and said I'm finishing at 5:30pm, full stop. I left a month later, because I could see that everyone around me was completely exhausted and overworked. It's funny, because in my leaving interviews I actually left on good terms because I'm fortunate enough to have a knack for building relationships with people. But I was honest with their issues. I said "we are slaves to our clients, we should be seen as expert problem solvers, not slaves". It's interesting because the leaders I spoke with actually agreed with me, but couldn't find ways to change it.

      It ALL COMES DOWN TO BAD MANAGEMENT. Any worthy owner would "reign this in" and get their AD or sales people on the right track. Bad traffic MGRs. Bad leadership that doesn't know process. OVER promising is a creative killer and people leave. ASK in Job Interviews: PROCESS and project turnover expectations.

    Unfortunately sometimes Designers have no choice but to put up with toxic clients because it is a paying job/project...I think the point is to either establish yourself as an accomplished Designer so that you can pick & choose your clients and move away from annoying clients/projects...or you learn to establish rules and boundaries early on so that you are not taken advantage of and the client doesn't feel as you will do whatever they say; this is achieved by communicating your terms early on and backing them up with a solid written contract... 😁

    This is 100 percent true. Working in advertisement agencies is all about competitions. Your director will always want to come up with new creative ideas everyday to blow the other agencies away. You will always be tired and frustrated! Word of advise, don't work for a Japanese boss.

    • @designthescenes
      @designthescenes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Competition is about being mediocre since those agencies or directors are measuring against others. Creating work according to whatever your client is selling is about being effective and business oriented.

    Graphic designers face rejection on daily basis due to work. It’s very hard to not take things personal. is the most exploited modern job! Pay is terrible. Everyone wants to give their last minute changes. I HATE it! I switched to UI/UX, it was NO different

    Basically now they expect you to know the entire Adobe CC Suite, Figma, Sketch, Coding, Illustration, all while you "keep learning" and pay you 50k. Meanwhile the old boys, Gen X Creative Directors with psychology degrees don't have half the skillset or design chops and would be equally screwed if they started now. Also, there are too many cooks in the kitchen. Everyone thinks they know what's right and has a different opinion and you will end up making 10,000 iterations and updates. RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thank you so much for this! Do you have any thoughts on what to do if a client is requesting source files?
    I’m a social media manager/graphic designer that is currently parting with a client because my rates are now out of their budget. I just received a message from them ‘telling me’ to send over all of the graphic design and video templates I created.
    We never had a contract established (not ideal, but I was junior when I first started working with them years ago). I know that I own the copyright to my templates, but I’m afraid that if I don’t send the source files that they will not pay me my monthly rate.
    I’m really stumped on what the best course of action is. I really don’t want to sabotage the relationship, but I also feel that I’m being treated unfairly.
    Any suggestions on how to deal with a situation like this? Any insights would be extremely appreciated!

    • @designthescenes
      @designthescenes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you haven't negotiated the source files at first, then you are in an uncomfortable situation.
      1- You can say source files were not part of the contract and if they want them they should pay a small fee.
      2-But if they still owe you money and its only about a few templates, I would simply let it go, learn from it and send them the source files this time, or just a few of them not all of them. Say they were not created as a template but as a working file, and just send them one example. Something that doesn't take you time.
      If we are talking about a lot of files, then I would say nicely that I will send them once I get my invoices paid so we both can part ways with nothing left behind.
      It's annoying, but we all have been through this, in a few years you would be thankful this happened to you, it will likely save you from bigger problems in the future ; )

You need to create a portfolio with work and send it around, connect with recruiters on linkedin etc. If you dont have a work portfolio that is clear to see the work you can create, its going to be nearly impossible to find a job. your example is a BAD manager or AD. Over Promising at the expense of their designers. I have over 25 years experience and teach as well. Now that everyone at a corporate office knows Canva and PS elements they all think they are designers. The disrespect and constant defending every design move and justifying basic typography rules, as examples, is exhausting as well as frustrating. Every one thinks they are designers since their kid draws logos. Now with Ai they think you CLICK a button and its done.
