Finally! Been watching this very interesting channel for a long time, been waiting for this. Got two of those recievers, a TX-NR579 (driving two Klipsch RB 51 used as computerspeakers), and a TX-NR 808 as main HiFi unit. Both are approx 8 years old.and they always had a lot of cooling space arround them, and were never abused. The 579 failed in 2016 and was put in a closet, and after I realized that there was an extended warranty, I send it in (2017/2018) and it was repaired (new HDMI board). Still working fine. The 808 never failed. Thanks for a very cool channel!
Our family business is the rebuilding and/or repairing of 1960’s to 2000’s Harley Davidson V-twin engines and after decades of dealing with the general public I’ve learned that leveling with people and simplifying things as much as possible when explaining a technical issue is greatly appreciated. Nice video. I've been out of repairing receivers and other things since 2001 when I was laid off and then ill after 30 years in the business. This looks more like a computer motherboard than an analog receiver to me! When I got laid off, these SMD micros were slowly populating the boards of the newer models. I've seen a lot of thermal problems on the older units of various descriptions like the one described in your video.

The moment where a $40 paperweight you shouldn't have bought from goodwill starts working! HOLY CRUD! Bought an HT-180 and discovered it had this exact problem. Grabbed a bulb just like you had and applied it to the chip for about 5 mins and BAM! The dumb thing works! Unreal. Great video!
Lol. Me too. I got a 708 for $10 at a thrift store. I used a butane lighter to heat the chip to 380F (very carefully and using a temp gun to keep an eye on the temps). Works perfectly. If I get 3y out of it, I will be happy. If not, it was $10.
Occasionally the BGA solder pads do not 100% flow in the cct. board manufacture and the odd ball may end up just having a ‘touch’ contact that may work and not show a fault until later. In and amongst my life as an electronic technician before retiring from the game, I was involved in a R&D and debugging role at a major digital satellite and cable receiver manufacturer and occasionally came across this problem, giving the chip a little tickle with a fine nozzle on a hot air gun sometimes cured the problem, even using an expensive professional rework station replacing. BGA (ball grid array) is a nightmare, you cannot guarantee that additional heat applied after original board flow will not damage the internal tracking of a multilayered circuit board, as you say, the bit of heat with a bit of luck will keep your board running a while but you end up repairing it as a freebie!! Keep your little films coming,I’m sure they help a lot of people
Blew out a JVC 87 year model monster. Took 12 speakers and one to short contact to fry it. It came on but no sound. Thing was in use 26 years. Gave it to guy next door when I moved, he probably got it to work had a number of units in his backyard garage. My other JVC still strong after 12 years but using only the speakers that came with it out the box. Nice video.

I've had an Onkyo receiver sitting in my extra room for several years waiting until I could justify costly repairs, and now I have a way to potentially isolate the issue without having to take it in to someone and get charged labor for troubleshooting. Can't wait to try your solution (and if I'm lucky get another 3 years out of the receiver).

Thanks your advice worked. Ran my heat gun over the chip for 35-45 seconds while shielding the four sides and connections are now made. Heard it click so new the switch was doing its job. Thanks again!!!!
Onkyo has always had great features (10.2 sound before anyone else, etc) but I was always concerned about reliability. I ended up with a Yamaha and I love it. Thanks for the video and a cool (hot) diagnosis!

It's the interposer inside the chip. If you heat it up things expand and make contact again. The bad thing is things also shrink... So, as the owner of the video said, it's not a proper repair, you need to replace the chip with a good one. And then probably provide good ventilation when using it.
Thank you! Thanks to your video, I decided to purchase a 300w heat gun from Amazon. Just two hours ago, I tried heat gun about 3" away for about 2 minutes. I tried power on twice and both times my 808 would have sound right away from cold power on. Will see how long this lasts.
I might jinx it, but I gave a friend of mine my folks old 1999 Onkyo reciever and it's still kickin, and I have a used Onkyo reciever that's going strong. I hope I don't ever have this issue. Love your videos
I have multiple onkyo’s now. A 508 fixed the output stage. Still working great. Fixed a 313, faulty standby relais. Sold it. Now using a 607 as main home audio unit. Had no display. Fixed it. Great unit. Other units. 706 hdmi board total failure 414 working but no video. Another 313, hdmi chip fried recently. 578 also kind of fixed. Still working on it. Next to the hdmi board chips running very hot. Also the amp itself runs very hot. This is also a reason to get the unit as cool as possible. Btw dave... get a hot air station.

I have been through so many Onkyo's. The last great trouble free one I owned was a TX NR901. Used daily until I just had to have HDMI. Even then the 901 was used in a garage setup for another 10 years with zeo problems. When I went HDMI, I decided to go with the TX SR805. I was so impressed with it that I bought a TX NR905 to get Ethernet input and moved the 805 to my front room setup. well, not soon after that the 805 video and sound. Tried to get it repaired, but Onkyo wouldn't honor. At that time I bought a TX NR807 on clearance to replace it. Not soon after the 905 lost sound. I was able to locate a TX NR5007 on closeout and picked it up. Again, Onkyo refused to fix the 905, so on the shelf it went. You know where this is going, not soon after the 807 failed. Lost Video, Ethernet and audio. I tried the 5008, but started having issues out of the gate with it and was able to return it. At this point I was done with Onkyo and switched to Denon. Of coarse the 5007 failed too, so I trashed the 805, and the 905, 807 and 5007 sat on the basement shelf. Years later Onkyo decided one time only to repair these units, but guess which model was left out? The 905 which I found to sound the best for Audio out of all of them. I sent in the 807 and 5007. The 807 is still sitting on the shelf since getting it back and I put the 5007 in my basement and it was still acting wonky when I got it back, but Onkyo refused to fix. None of the input buttons respond correctly and when you try to power down it will either turn zones 2 and 3 on or put it in pure power mode. after about 10 pushes it might finally turn off, but not before clearing all of your settings as if you did a factory reset. I would love to get the 905 back up and running and the 5007 working properly, but no one will tough them. :(
I am currently using a 605 which was given to me last year. When my RC370 started acting up again after 3 years (after the light bulb fix) I put in the older 605 and use it just for TV sound. It doesn't work properly with analog inputs, as it won't convert them to HDMI like the 370 did so my VCR and Laserdisk is useless as they are remote mounted and not connected directly to the TV. In my setup all my equipment is in a separate closet, about 30 feet from the TV, so all switching needs to be done remotely. Since I still have analog sources, getting a new modern receiver that only has HDMI is not an option. I have resorted to plugging my VCR and Laserdisk player into an MTS stereo modulator and sending the video and audio over RF to the TV, and then the sound back to the receiver. Not an ideal setup, but at least it allows me to view VHS, Beta and Laserdisk analog sources. I don't use these much these days anyway.
How could anyone give you a thumbs down for such an innovative; simple; and totally conclusive trouble shooting test? I thought that was amazing !! I do wonder where you might find programmed DSP chip replacements for any of these recent intelligent receivers ??

I have TXNR609 which i bought nearly 2 years back From what i can gather i'm the second owner of it from brand new Having watched you vid i thought i would have a look at the famous HDMI board and the DSP chip as you pointed out and i was happy to see a little sticker on top of it saying NEW lol so i'm praying that this means someone once changed it All this means now is one day the HDMI board will probably fail next but seen as this amp has been around now 9 years i just hope it lasts till i can afford a new Dolby Atmos based amp one day lol Great vid
great video, used a heat gun with nozzle to heat the dsp chip for 1 ½ min. and now sound is working, also the Network actually also work it was not responding before repair. Have added a small heat sink on top of dsp to improve, but thank you very much.
Many thanks. Worked for me on my TX-NR609 just now. 3-4 minutes heating with a 50W 240v Halogen Bulb touching the TI Chip. If it doesn't last then I will try 6 minutes. Started to smell a but burnt dusty.

Quick update: My receiver doesn’t initially work on start up so I apply the heat gun for a few seconds and it works. About a minute later, it’ll give out again and then I reheat it again and it stays on for the rest of the time I’m using it. The only downside is the heat gun is literally resting next to the receiver should it give out. I’m just waiting for the day it completely craps out. A new receiver would cost me around $400.00 from what I’ve seen on Amazon. Not bad but I’d rather not go there. Times are tough.
The same problem was also present in a batch of Denon and Marantz NR series (which presumably use either the same board or the same chip). Onkyo had an extended warranty for their NR receivers because of this problem, and my Marantz was simply RMA'd and fixed under warranty. After replacement of the HDMI/DSP board it worked fine ever since.
You helped a lot with my 709 before I paid Onkyo to fix mine I found that if you put the audio settings to DIRECT you can get the amp to come on in stereo.
@@12voltvids I think the dead chip stops the protection relays from closing, so the audio is gone until that happens even in direct mode. I had an SR-707 repaired by Onkyo for free a couple years back that I bought in 2010, it worked fine since before selling it.
My TX-RZ800 died a similar death (I will try this fix shortly), but the analog and toslink inputs still work perfectly (assuming the unit isn’t set in a mode that require the dsp chip to process the sound). Dolby 5.1 works fine, as does All-channel stereo, and so on. I ran my blu-Ray player’s HDMI directly to the TV, and used an optical cable to feed sound to the Onkyo. I lost the higher resolution audio and Atmos support, plus the ability to switch video sources... oh, and the onscreen menu... BUT, it got me by until I picked up a newer model at a decent price. Incidentally, I wasn’t aware of the RZ800 being prone to this issue, but it happened twice (the first time under warranty, the second time, not).
That’s magic. I didn’t know that you could fix chips with a light bulb. I know that you can fix soldering issues with a bulb or applying heat but not fixing broken chips. Amazing. Thanks for the insight.

Thank you so much for a nice, easy to watch and understand video. My Onkyo HT-R591 clicks like twice (I guess speaker relay?) But it doesn't sound like it clicks the last time. I usually leave it on for a couple hours and it will eventually kick sound on. However now the sound will not come on at all after an entire day of being on. :( It seems like I was inevitably heating up the receiver and eventually it would kick the sound on.
Wow, just purchased a Onkyo TX-NR575 for Christmas last years. Had no idea they had these kind of failures. I was in the electronic service business myself started in the mid 80s but by the mid 90s I gave it up. Hard to make money since consumer electronics was getting so cheap. The cost of doing service kept going up, the return kept going down. Also I got was pretty tired of working my arse off only to make the shop owners rich. Got into office equipment after that and did pretty well.
onkyo did a recall few years back due to this issue . many ppl bitched about no sound video issue so onkyo caved in and did the recall. had my ht rc270 fixed for free. gowever all electronics mwde these days made like crap. cost 150$ these days in canada for diagnosis.
Had same issue, did not believed it would work. Initially it did not, but after that I took the board off, so I can flip it, and did the light thing on the underside over the soldering and VOILA, it is now working! I will put a heat sink on that chip to hopefully have it last longer (I read that the sticker that come with cheap heat sink is not transferring heat correctly, so I will use thermal paste) Thanks for the info.
Why care about the people who give you thumbs down, they are idiots. The goals is to diagnose the problem and fix it. Just because it is unconventional makes it better and creative.
I gave a thumb down too because of his blanket statement about "Onkyo garbage receiver". The chip was/is garbage not the receiver. He continually makes generalizing statements about overall product quality in a lot of his videos. He should have clarified by stating: "junk Texas Instruments chip." Onkyo makes some excellent top-notch products, I used them for many years. ALL BRANDS at one time or another suffer from poor or bad component quality, whether it's Marantz, Acoustic Research... whatever.
Also from what I heard from fellow technicians, when Onkyo did the recall till october of 2018 where they fixed those for free, they used a board that dropped the DSP voltage rail from 3,3V down to 3V, most likely to lower the power that the chip needs to burn. Huge fail on behaf of Texas Instruments...
I have a Onkyo NR616 and an NR818 and they both went back to Onkyo for warranty repair for exactly the same fault! Great video, nice to know what caused the failures, now that my amps are repaired I have a 5V fan sitting above the rear of the amp (powered from the rear USB) to help stop it overheating again.
Hi you all, in many cases there are problems with solder connections, especially after the change to lead free products... reheating can be one way to start... and with something as simple as a Halogen lamp...nice video :-)
I've worked on this same problem and it is as you say, it is across the board but I don't think changing the DSP chip is going to solve anything. The problem is the extreme amount of technology compressed into that little chip. The chip is like a CPU in a computer, it needs a heatsink attached to it but the problem I've noticed is there is no mounting holes to hold the heatsink to the board, at least on some of the boards. (like the one you are showing us in the video) I've spent a lot of time and work on this problem and I do have proto-type solution in the works. Some of the boards have a thru hole on each corner of the DSP chip and with these holes I've attached a heatsink with a custom made mount to displace the heat generated by the DSP chip. Only time will tell at this point if it works. (fingers crossed)
@@erik61801 , most audio-video receivers need a minimum of 8 ohms load on each and all channels. Many customers are unaware of this and will run 4 ohm speakers, or parallel speakers on the main channels, or run the A&B speakers simultaneously, or use the receiver to run speakers outdoors or throughout the house. These units were just not designed for that kind of Duty!
Our Onkyo 708 and 717 both had bad chips. One repaired under warranty and the other required a replacement DSP board. Two newer models are trouble free so far.
Thank you so much... I had the chip changed about 18 months ago and it just recently started playing up again. This done the job. Incidentally, I also noticed my remote from my phone did not work and this seems to have rectified that problem also! Again, thank you!
@@vortexor1 I got about another 2 months out of it, but finally it died. It is a temporary fix, until you can get it replaced. I just brought a new receiver from Denon as I was absolutely tired to keep wondering if the Onkyo would give up again.
@@davidkettley6685 Are you satisfied with the sound of your new Denon? I also bought one after my Onkyo tx-nr509 failed with no sound (since i did not know of this video back then!). But compared to the Onkyo the Denon sounded extremely flat and not voluminous at all (though the setup was the same with 5.0 speakers). I ended up returning it and bought a used tx-nr609 from ebay for about 200€ just a week ago.. the sound characteristic is exactly what i expected the Denon to be and even a bit better than on the 509. The added bass of the Onkyos is just perfect to compensate my lack of a subwoofer. Maybe i can fix the issue on my 509 now with the help of this vid and resell it for a higher price than it being in state "defect".
@@stefaness2153 the sound is definitely not as rich as the Onkyo, but the reliability is spot on. I tend to find it depends a lot on the source material.
Interesting to note that they started = Osaka Denki Onkyo K.K in 1946. Immediately post WW2.Over the decades they've specialized in AV systems and some amp units? Ah I love IC systems 😆and have watched a few hot air removals (NOT Onkyo) sometimes the solder removed and re 'tinned' before replacing the IC and the unit works fine after which kind of proves how wonderful and let's remember this, a machine installs those ICs not a human being - a machine! Basically heat and flash soldering in one which inevitably ends up with some having weak or poor terminal conductivity. Onkyo definitely not the only ones re this issue. Hmm where did I put my apple...😃Great vid as always and an excellent fix if it works and if you have one of these you've acquired from a thrift or charity shop et IF it works even for a few years after? 😃 where did I put my peanuts.. 😁
Hey @12voltsvids! You said your own Onkyo started to act up and then after a while stopped working completely. Was that „acting up” an occasional no sound on one channel perhaps? Have one that does that and starting to gather potential diagnoses to cross-check. Great video BTW! :)

Should work for awhile. Mine lasted 2 years before acting up and is sitting in the corner. Will give it another go some day and see if it will work again. I am using an even older one now for my home theater amp. All i use it for is watching tv. I liked the one that broke because it had very good input switching for all my legacy equipment. Nee ones only have hdmi so I can't connect my old dvd player, laserdisk or vcr.
Amazing! I have a Onkyo TX-SR707 that has been serviced 2 times due to the «no sound» issue. Just to fail again. The board you were working on is the hdmi-board right? Since my receiver is out of warranty I now know what to look for to do a temporary repair. It is sad that Onkyo made such bad electronics. As someone else wrote here it is partly due to the lead free solder. Thank you for the vid!
Good sir, I owe you a beer. I reflowed the chip with a heat gun and stainless steel funnel (works great for BGA parts btw, as you can get them typically in a set of several sizes and they give you precision control of the airflow) and BAM the sound is back. Sure it may not last, but the fact it worked is enough for me to say thanks.
Got one at the dump. You can bypass the HDMI board by (unit off) holding bd/dvd, press power and when display shows "hdmi :use" push power gain and it will toggle to "ignore", release bd/dvd. You just get basic audio inputs, no fancy AV. You'll have sound but no tone controls. Using Zone 2 you get tone controls.
I have recently came across a Dual 1249 turntable. It looks like someone got it overseas and tried to rewire it for US voltage and failed. Do you happen to have a video or photos of how the motor, power block and switching block are to be wired? I found a service manual that has the schematic, but the wire colors and some components are different and I just want to make sure I have it right. I think both of those blocks are the same on all 1200 series turntables, I just don't have another one to compare it to. Thanks!
Sad to see that these newer Onkyo receivers are apparently not reliable. They used to be a pretty big player when it comes to stereo amps. I have a A-9155 that I have not turned off in over 5 years and it still works fine.
It was a common fault of the era, drive by government regulation forcing too rapid a transition to under-tested new solder. A whole bunch of computer parts had the same problem. Laptop gpu's were notorious due to running hot and exposing the flaw in as little as _1or2 years!_ imagine buying a new laptop and bluescreening with HW failure in less than 2 years. Also, note that the fault use in a TI chip, not onkyo. Several other companies had similar problems, but onkyo had more *because they put the best of the best new chips available in even their cheaper units.* Most other companies were cheaping out on features in sub-$800 units, so most of those weren't affected. Things like dolby only or dts only models vs onkyo with both and vertical sound and auto tuning mic and more hdmi inputs and... It's sad the heaps of laptops and other electronic went to the landfill so the gov could put on the image of "saving the environment."

Do you have an opinion on Yamaha receivers? I was after Sony STR-DN1080 receiver after reading its (quite impressive) specs, but they wouldn't sell them officially in my country and black market prices are far too high (and no warranty). So I went for Yamaha RX-V685. I don't know whose DSP chip it uses, papers state that is has four Burr-Brown DACs (which are good, right?) I am satisfied with it as of now, especially because it has 'Pure Direct' mode which promises no processing of incoming signal.
I really enjoy watching your videos, as a complete layman! Maybe you repeat your diagnosis and other comments various times to make sure the message gets across, which is probably very good teaching style. I find it sometimes a bit too much. (You must have said 5 times that these AV-R have problems with the DSP... ;))
I have just purchased this Onkyo amp because I had 2x Sony STR DE475's which have the same issue with relay not clicking for sound so I'm worrying now - anyway my way is to hit it from the LEFT at the precise moment when it CLICKS - sometimes I have to try it 5-6 times but it always worked so far;)
I have an Onkyo tx sr506 amplifier that had a defect in the rear left channel. I repaired the defect but I did not find in the service book the table with the voltage values on the measurement terminals for adjusting the idle current. Do you know the corresponding voltage values for all channels for do current readjustment for all channels?
I used a heat gun for fix and helped at least for time being. So thnx a lot!! TI has a new version of chip available, but selling only to "certified" customers? I.e. to companies who are their service partners?
Started having issues with my HT-390 and then the sound stopped...No other video I found did anything to help.....this worked...Used a 1500W heat gun for about 3 minutes...let it cool for a minute and viola, I had HDMI ARC sound again....Thanks for the post...
I have an TX-NR609 with an already warranty-replaced DSP chip. I recently lost my sound, but I still get the speaker indicators on the front of the unit. Do you think it's still worth trying to reflow the DSP?
Also note this is one of the reasons I am 1000% in favour of pre/control amps and seperate power amps! Not only is thermal management easier but even if the pre never had a failure when it comes time to upgrade etc it could help save $$$$ since onlt the pre would need replacement In my own case I have a very nice Denon 4300 butand I can build another custom power amp (multichannel) to use with the Denons pre-outs though my unit dooes have very good onboard non-IC based power section (umlike cheaper units like my old kenwood) I do wish the mfrs would offer the dsp/pre seperately from power amps or at the least build in an "off" setting to 100% tuen off thw power for onboard power. That and i they wont spend the few cents for added heatssinks as OEM allow the consumer to do such w/o voiding any warranty etc

As for personal i want to find a nice carver 27 or similar to replace my temp carver.. with is in place of my very old kenwood with is replacement for a cydtom hand built unit that some scum stole from my yrs ago Add to that a 400t of i can find one i can afford (and mod to mkii) to go with my 55x for 2ch+ use of mixed with my 505.. of my denon 11.1 ch proc reciever For HT use

In FM radio the speakers sound good while if I put on video1,2,3 or CD and try to reproduce the audio coming from the various sources the left channel does not play, only the right works. If I put it on the radio it works perfectly. What should I check once opened? thanks and to the next video. ps: If I leave it unplugged for a few days and then mention it, both speakers work for a few minutes in every situation. What can it be? Sorry my english but i'm italian. thank you
Will this also be able to fix a „no video“ issue? My TX NR 3030 lost all Monitor Outs (Main-Sub-Zone2) over the past weeks. Sound still OK. Onkyo replaced the Board already 2y ago, when only the Sub Monitor Out was without function that time.
I have an Onkyo TX-NR777 the left Front speaker just gave up the ghost. I confirmed it is not the speaker itself as it works on another device. The subwoofer as well as stoped working. Both issues remained after a factory reset and a firmware update. Thoughts ie should I get it fixed or just look for a new device altogether?

I'll put my old one up again and bake the chip a second time and see if it will come back to life again. As I was saying I got 3 years out of mine before it went out again, and because I had another older unit I just swapped it.

Been watching this very interesting channel for a long time, been waiting for this. Got two of those recievers, a TX-NR579 (driving two Klipsch RB 51 used as computerspeakers), and a TX-NR 808 as main HiFi unit. Both are approx 8 years old.and they always had a lot of cooling space arround them, and were never abused.
The 579 failed in 2016 and was put in a closet, and after I realized that there was an extended warranty, I send it in (2017/2018) and it was repaired (new HDMI board). Still working fine.
The 808 never failed.

Our family business is the rebuilding and/or repairing of 1960’s to 2000’s Harley Davidson V-twin engines and after decades of dealing with the general public I’ve learned that leveling with people and simplifying things as much as possible when explaining a technical issue is greatly appreciated. Nice video. I've been out of repairing receivers and other things since 2001 when I was laid off and then ill after 30 years in the business. This looks more like a computer motherboard than an analog receiver to me! When I got laid off, these SMD micros were slowly populating the boards of the newer models. I've seen a lot of thermal problems on the older units of various descriptions like the one described in your video.

Bought an HT-180 and discovered it had this exact problem. Grabbed a bulb just like you had and applied it to the chip for about 5 mins and BAM! The dumb thing works! Unreal.

Lol. Me too. I got a 708 for $10 at a thrift store. I used a butane lighter to heat the chip to 380F (very carefully and using a temp gun to keep an eye on the temps). Works perfectly. If I get 3y out of it, I will be happy. If not, it was $10.
Occasionally the BGA solder pads do not 100% flow in the cct. board manufacture and the odd ball may end up just having a ‘touch’ contact that may work and not show a fault until later. In and amongst my life as an electronic technician before retiring from the game, I was involved in a R&D and debugging role at a major digital satellite and cable receiver manufacturer and occasionally came across this problem, giving the chip a little tickle with a fine nozzle on a hot air gun sometimes cured the problem, even using an expensive professional rework station replacing. BGA (ball grid array) is a nightmare, you cannot guarantee that additional heat applied after original board flow will not damage the internal tracking of a multilayered circuit board, as you say, the bit of heat with a bit of luck will keep your board running a while but you end up repairing it as a freebie!! Keep your little films coming,I’m sure they help a lot of people
Blew out a JVC 87 year model monster. Took 12 speakers and one to short contact to fry it. It came on but no sound. Thing was in use 26 years. Gave it to guy next door when I moved, he probably got it to work had a number of units in his backyard garage. My other JVC still strong after 12 years but using only the speakers that came with it out the box. Nice video.

I've had an Onkyo receiver sitting in my extra room for several years waiting until I could justify costly repairs, and now I have a way to potentially isolate the issue without having to take it in to someone and get charged labor for troubleshooting. Can't wait to try your solution (and if I'm lucky get another 3 years out of the receiver).
If you haven't tried it, do it. I used my heat gun from a solder station and it fixed my Onkyo that had been setting dormant for a few years.

Thanks your advice worked. Ran my heat gun over the chip for 35-45 seconds while shielding the four sides and connections are now made. Heard it click so new the switch was doing its job. Thanks again!!!!
Onkyo has always had great features (10.2 sound before anyone else, etc) but I was always concerned about reliability. I ended up with a Yamaha and I love it. Thanks for the video and a cool (hot) diagnosis!
My basic year 2000 Yamaha still works. Ive had it on my TV and connected HTPC and never turn it off, right now its playing this video.
Yamaha isnt like they used to be, build the same way as Onkyo's Denons and Hamron Kardons. Cheap

It is either a cracked solder joint or a cracked silicon die inside the chip.
It's the interposer inside the chip. If you heat it up things expand and make contact again. The bad thing is things also shrink... So, as the owner of the video said, it's not a proper repair, you need to replace the chip with a good one. And then probably provide good ventilation when using it.

Thank you! Thanks to your video, I decided to purchase a 300w heat gun from Amazon. Just two hours ago, I tried heat gun about 3" away for about 2 minutes. I tried power on twice and both times my 808 would have sound right away from cold power on. Will see how long this lasts.
I might jinx it, but I gave a friend of mine my folks old 1999 Onkyo reciever and it's still kickin, and I have a used Onkyo reciever that's going strong. I hope I don't ever have this issue. Love your videos
I have multiple onkyo’s now. A 508 fixed the output stage. Still working great. Fixed a 313, faulty standby relais. Sold it. Now using a 607 as main home audio unit. Had no display. Fixed it. Great unit.
Other units. 706 hdmi board total failure
414 working but no video.
Another 313, hdmi chip fried recently.
578 also kind of fixed. Still working on it.
Next to the hdmi board chips running very hot. Also the amp itself runs very hot. This is also a reason to get the unit as cool as possible.
Btw dave... get a hot air station.

I have been through so many Onkyo's. The last great trouble free one I owned was a TX NR901. Used daily until I just had to have HDMI. Even then the 901 was used in a garage setup for another 10 years with zeo problems. When I went HDMI, I decided to go with the TX SR805. I was so impressed with it that I bought a TX NR905 to get Ethernet input and moved the 805 to my front room setup. well, not soon after that the 805 video and sound. Tried to get it repaired, but Onkyo wouldn't honor. At that time I bought a TX NR807 on clearance to replace it. Not soon after the 905 lost sound. I was able to locate a TX NR5007 on closeout and picked it up. Again, Onkyo refused to fix the 905, so on the shelf it went. You know where this is going, not soon after the 807 failed. Lost Video, Ethernet and audio. I tried the 5008, but started having issues out of the gate with it and was able to return it. At this point I was done with Onkyo and switched to Denon. Of coarse the 5007 failed too, so I trashed the 805, and the 905, 807 and 5007 sat on the basement shelf. Years later Onkyo decided one time only to repair these units, but guess which model was left out? The 905 which I found to sound the best for Audio out of all of them. I sent in the 807 and 5007. The 807 is still sitting on the shelf since getting it back and I put the 5007 in my basement and it was still acting wonky when I got it back, but Onkyo refused to fix. None of the input buttons respond correctly and when you try to power down it will either turn zones 2 and 3 on or put it in pure power mode. after about 10 pushes it might finally turn off, but not before clearing all of your settings as if you did a factory reset. I would love to get the 905 back up and running and the 5007 working properly, but no one will tough them. :(
I am currently using a 605 which was given to me last year. When my RC370 started acting up again after 3 years (after the light bulb fix) I put in the older 605 and use it just for TV sound. It doesn't work properly with analog inputs, as it won't convert them to HDMI like the 370 did so my VCR and Laserdisk is useless as they are remote mounted and not connected directly to the TV. In my setup all my equipment is in a separate closet, about 30 feet from the TV, so all switching needs to be done remotely. Since I still have analog sources, getting a new modern receiver that only has HDMI is not an option. I have resorted to plugging my VCR and Laserdisk player into an MTS stereo modulator and sending the video and audio over RF to the TV, and then the sound back to the receiver. Not an ideal setup, but at least it allows me to view VHS, Beta and Laserdisk analog sources. I don't use these much these days anyway.
How could anyone give you a thumbs down for such an innovative; simple; and totally conclusive trouble shooting test? I thought that was amazing !! I do wonder where you might find programmed DSP chip replacements for any of these recent intelligent receivers ??

I have TXNR609 which i bought nearly 2 years back From what i can gather i'm the second owner of it from brand new Having watched you vid i thought i would have a look at the famous HDMI board and the DSP chip as you pointed out and i was happy to see a little sticker on top of it saying NEW lol so i'm praying that this means someone once changed it All this means now is one day the HDMI board will probably fail next but seen as this amp has been around now 9 years i just hope it lasts till i can afford a new Dolby Atmos based amp one day lol Great vid

great video, used a heat gun with nozzle to heat the dsp chip for 1 ½ min. and now sound is working, also the Network actually also work it was not responding before repair. Have added a small heat sink on top of dsp to improve, but thank you very much.
Many thanks. Worked for me on my TX-NR609 just now. 3-4 minutes heating with a 50W 240v Halogen Bulb touching the TI Chip. If it doesn't last then I will try 6 minutes. Started to smell a but burnt dusty.
This fixed my RT590! Thank you so much! Though we'll see how long it lasts, at least it's working again.

Quick update: My receiver doesn’t initially work on start up so I apply the heat gun for a few seconds and it works. About a minute later, it’ll give out again and then I reheat it again and it stays on for the rest of the time I’m using it. The only downside is the heat gun is literally resting next to the receiver should it give out. I’m just waiting for the day it completely craps out. A new receiver would cost me around $400.00 from what I’ve seen on Amazon. Not bad but I’d rather not go there. Times are tough.

The same problem was also present in a batch of Denon and Marantz NR series (which presumably use either the same board or the same chip). Onkyo had an extended warranty for their NR receivers because of this problem, and my Marantz was simply RMA'd and fixed under warranty. After replacement of the HDMI/DSP board it worked fine ever since.
You helped a lot with my 709 before I paid Onkyo to fix mine I found that if you put the audio settings to DIRECT you can get the amp to come on in stereo.
Not mine. When it failed it was dead even in direct mode.
@@12voltvids I think the dead chip stops the protection relays from closing, so the audio is gone until that happens even in direct mode. I had an SR-707 repaired by Onkyo for free a couple years back that I bought in 2010, it worked fine since before selling it.
My TX-RZ800 died a similar death (I will try this fix shortly), but the analog and toslink inputs still work perfectly (assuming the unit isn’t set in a mode that require the dsp chip to process the sound). Dolby 5.1 works fine, as does All-channel stereo, and so on. I ran my blu-Ray player’s HDMI directly to the TV, and used an optical cable to feed sound to the Onkyo. I lost the higher resolution audio and Atmos support, plus the ability to switch video sources... oh, and the onscreen menu... BUT, it got me by until I picked up a newer model at a decent price. Incidentally, I wasn’t aware of the RZ800 being prone to this issue, but it happened twice (the first time under warranty, the second time, not).

Thank you so much for a nice, easy to watch and understand video. My Onkyo HT-R591 clicks like twice (I guess speaker relay?) But it doesn't sound like it clicks the last time. I usually leave it on for a couple hours and it will eventually kick sound on. However now the sound will not come on at all after an entire day of being on. :( It seems like I was inevitably heating up the receiver and eventually it would kick the sound on.
Wow, just purchased a Onkyo TX-NR575 for Christmas last years. Had no idea they had these kind of failures. I was in the electronic service business myself started in the mid 80s but by the mid 90s I gave it up. Hard to make money since consumer electronics was getting so cheap. The cost of doing service kept going up, the return kept going down. Also I got was pretty tired of working my arse off only to make the shop owners rich. Got into office equipment after that and did pretty well.
onkyo did a recall few years back due to this issue . many ppl bitched about no sound video issue so onkyo caved in and did the recall. had my ht rc270 fixed for free.
gowever all electronics mwde these days made like crap. cost 150$ these days in canada for diagnosis.
Had same issue, did not believed it would work. Initially it did not, but after that I took the board off, so I can flip it, and did the light thing on the underside over the soldering and VOILA, it is now working!
I will put a heat sink on that chip to hopefully have it last longer (I read that the sticker that come with cheap heat sink is not transferring heat correctly, so I will use thermal paste)

I gave a thumb down too because of his blanket statement about "Onkyo garbage receiver". The chip was/is garbage not the receiver. He continually makes generalizing statements about overall product quality in a lot of his videos. He should have clarified by stating: "junk Texas Instruments chip."
Onkyo makes some excellent top-notch products, I used them for many years. ALL BRANDS at one time or another suffer from poor or bad component quality, whether it's Marantz, Acoustic Research... whatever.

Also from what I heard from fellow technicians, when Onkyo did the recall till october of 2018 where they fixed those for free, they used a board that dropped the DSP voltage rail from 3,3V down to 3V, most likely to lower the power that the chip needs to burn. Huge fail on behaf of Texas Instruments...
I have a Onkyo NR616 and an NR818 and they both went back to Onkyo for warranty repair for exactly the same fault! Great video, nice to know what caused the failures, now that my amps are repaired I have a 5V fan sitting above the rear of the amp (powered from the rear USB) to help stop it overheating again.

Hi you all, in many cases there are problems with solder connections, especially after the change to lead free products... reheating can be one way to start... and with something as simple as a Halogen lamp...nice video :-)

I've worked on this same problem and it is as you say, it is across the board but I don't think changing the DSP chip is going to solve anything. The problem is the extreme amount of technology compressed into that little chip. The chip is like a CPU in a computer, it needs a heatsink attached to it but the problem I've noticed is there is no mounting holes to hold the heatsink to the board, at least on some of the boards. (like the one you are showing us in the video) I've spent a lot of time and work on this problem and I do have proto-type solution in the works. Some of the boards have a thru hole on each corner of the DSP chip and with these holes I've attached a heatsink with a custom made mount to displace the heat generated by the DSP chip. Only time will tell at this point if it works. (fingers crossed)
My Onkyo gets so effing hot you’d think it would fix itself.
im glad i do not need an AV Reciever. I have a simple vintage AMP which barely gets near hand warm on the heatsink itself when i listen loud.

check your speaker impedance and the sum of all of them. i run car audio speakers for surround..my unit gets pretty toasty because of that.
True! I upgraded to another brand and have noticed how little heat it puts out compares the the Onkyo. They’re like mini ovens!
@@erik61801 , most audio-video receivers need a minimum of 8 ohms load on each and all channels. Many customers are unaware of this and will run 4 ohm speakers, or parallel speakers on the main channels, or run the A&B speakers simultaneously, or use the receiver to run speakers outdoors or throughout the house. These units were just not designed for that kind of Duty!
Our Onkyo 708 and 717 both had bad chips. One repaired under warranty and the other required a replacement DSP board. Two newer models are trouble free so far.

@@vortexor1 I got about another 2 months out of it, but finally it died. It is a temporary fix, until you can get it replaced. I just brought a new receiver from Denon as I was absolutely tired to keep wondering if the Onkyo would give up again.

@@davidkettley6685 Are you satisfied with the sound of your new Denon? I also bought one after my Onkyo tx-nr509 failed with no sound (since i did not know of this video back then!). But compared to the Onkyo the Denon sounded extremely flat and not voluminous at all (though the setup was the same with 5.0 speakers). I ended up returning it and bought a used tx-nr609 from ebay for about 200€ just a week ago.. the sound characteristic is exactly what i expected the Denon to be and even a bit better than on the 509. The added bass of the Onkyos is just perfect to compensate my lack of a subwoofer.
Maybe i can fix the issue on my 509 now with the help of this vid and resell it for a higher price than it being in state "defect".
@@stefaness2153 the sound is definitely not as rich as the Onkyo, but the reliability is spot on. I tend to find it depends a lot on the source material.
Interesting to note that they started = Osaka Denki Onkyo K.K in 1946. Immediately post WW2.Over the decades they've specialized in AV systems and some amp units? Ah I love IC systems 😆and have watched a few hot air removals (NOT Onkyo) sometimes the solder removed and re 'tinned' before replacing the IC and the unit works fine after which kind of proves how wonderful and let's remember this, a machine installs those ICs not a human being - a machine! Basically heat and flash soldering in one which inevitably ends up with some having weak or poor terminal conductivity. Onkyo definitely not the only ones re this issue. Hmm where did I put my apple...😃Great vid as always and an excellent fix if it works and if you have one of these you've acquired from a thrift or charity shop et IF it works even for a few years after? 😃 where did I put my peanuts.. 😁

Should work for awhile. Mine lasted 2 years before acting up and is sitting in the corner. Will give it another go some day and see if it will work again. I am using an even older one now for my home theater amp. All i use it for is watching tv. I liked the one that broke because it had very good input switching for all my legacy equipment. Nee ones only have hdmi so I can't connect my old dvd player, laserdisk or vcr.

Amazing! I have a Onkyo TX-SR707 that has been serviced 2 times due to the «no sound» issue. Just to fail again. The board you were working on is the hdmi-board right? Since my receiver is out of warranty I now know what to look for to do a temporary repair. It is sad that Onkyo made such bad electronics. As someone else wrote here it is partly due to the lead free solder. Thank you for the vid!

You could stick a heatsink on it, might stop it recurring as quickly.
Good sir, I owe you a beer. I reflowed the chip with a heat gun and stainless steel funnel (works great for BGA parts btw, as you can get them typically in a set of several sizes and they give you precision control of the airflow) and BAM the sound is back. Sure it may not last, but the fact it worked is enough for me to say thanks.
Got one at the dump. You can bypass the HDMI board by (unit off) holding bd/dvd, press power and when display shows "hdmi :use" push power gain and it will toggle to "ignore", release bd/dvd. You just get basic audio inputs, no fancy AV. You'll have sound but no tone controls. Using Zone 2 you get tone controls.

I have recently came across a Dual 1249 turntable. It looks like someone got it overseas and tried to rewire it for US voltage and failed. Do you happen to have a video or photos of how the motor, power block and switching block are to be wired? I found a service manual that has the schematic, but the wire colors and some components are different and I just want to make sure I have it right. I think both of those blocks are the same on all 1200 series turntables, I just don't have another one to compare it to. Thanks!

Sad to see that these newer Onkyo receivers are apparently not reliable. They used to be a pretty big player when it comes to stereo amps.
I have a A-9155 that I have not turned off in over 5 years and it still works fine.
It was a common fault of the era, drive by government regulation forcing too rapid a transition to under-tested new solder.
A whole bunch of computer parts had the same problem.
Laptop gpu's were notorious due to running hot and exposing the flaw in as little as _1or2 years!_ imagine buying a new laptop and bluescreening with HW failure in less than 2 years.

Most other companies were cheaping out on features in sub-$800 units, so most of those weren't affected. Things like dolby only or dts only models vs onkyo with both and vertical sound and auto tuning mic and more hdmi inputs and...
It's sad the heaps of laptops and other electronic went to the landfill so the gov could put on the image of "saving the environment."
Hello 12v' i own a TX NR-807, is this temp fix will work for "no video" from hdmi? Sound is ok feom hdmi and rca's works fine also. Thanks

Do you have an opinion on Yamaha receivers?
I was after Sony STR-DN1080 receiver after reading its (quite impressive) specs, but they wouldn't sell them officially in my country and black market prices are far too high (and no warranty).
So I went for Yamaha RX-V685. I don't know whose DSP chip it uses, papers state that is has four Burr-Brown DACs (which are good, right?)
I am satisfied with it as of now, especially because it has 'Pure Direct' mode which promises no processing of incoming signal.

Maybe you repeat your diagnosis and other comments various times to make sure the message gets across, which is probably very good teaching style. I find it sometimes a bit too much. (You must have said 5 times that these AV-R have problems with the DSP... ;))

I have just purchased this Onkyo amp because I had 2x Sony STR DE475's which have the same issue with relay not clicking for sound so I'm worrying now - anyway my way is to hit it from the LEFT at the precise moment when it CLICKS - sometimes I have to try it 5-6 times but it always worked so far;)
I have an Onkyo tx sr506 amplifier that had a defect in the rear left channel. I repaired the defect but I did not find in the service book the table with the voltage values on the measurement terminals for adjusting the idle current. Do you know the corresponding voltage values for all channels for do current readjustment for all channels?
I used a heat gun for fix and helped at least for time being. So thnx a lot!! TI has a new version of chip available, but selling only to "certified" customers? I.e. to companies who are their service partners?
Started having issues with my HT-390 and then the sound stopped...No other video I found did anything to help.....this worked...Used a 1500W heat gun for about 3 minutes...let it cool for a minute and viola, I had HDMI ARC sound again....Thanks for the post...

@@inconspicuous-nobody it lasts about 3-4 months...I had to recently use the heat gun again...Kind of a pain, but cheaper than buying a new receiver.

I have an TX-NR609 with an already warranty-replaced DSP chip. I recently lost my sound, but I still get the speaker indicators on the front of the unit. Do you think it's still worth trying to reflow the DSP?
Also note this is one of the reasons I am 1000% in favour of pre/control amps and seperate power amps! Not only is thermal management easier but even if the pre never had a failure when it comes time to upgrade etc it could help save $$$$ since onlt the pre would need replacement
In my own case I have a very nice Denon 4300 butand I can build another custom power amp (multichannel) to use with the Denons pre-outs though my unit dooes have very good onboard non-IC based power section (umlike cheaper units like my old kenwood)
I do wish the mfrs would offer the dsp/pre seperately from power amps or at the least build in an "off" setting to 100% tuen off thw power for onboard power.
That and i they wont spend the few cents for added heatssinks as OEM allow the consumer to do such w/o voiding any warranty etc

That said when i worked with many goodies 99% of with i couldnt afford i was lucky to get exp with everything from old school technics/pioneer/denon/yamaha to carver to rotel bryson and many others.
As for personal i want to find a nice carver 27 or similar to replace my temp carver.. with is in place of my very old kenwood with is replacement for a cydtom hand built unit that some scum stole from my yrs ago
Add to that a 400t of i can find one i can afford (and mod to mkii) to go with my 55x for 2ch+ use of mixed with my 505.. of my denon 11.1 ch proc reciever

In FM radio the speakers sound good while if I put on video1,2,3 or CD and try to reproduce the audio coming from the various sources the left channel does not play, only the right works. If I put it on the radio it works perfectly. What should I check once opened? thanks and to the next video. ps: If I leave it unplugged for a few days and then mention it, both speakers work for a few minutes in every situation. What can it be? Will this also be able to fix a „no video“ issue? My TX NR 3030 lost all Monitor Outs (Main-Sub-Zone2) over the past weeks. Sound still OK. Onkyo replaced the Board already 2y ago, when only the Sub Monitor Out was without function that time.

I have an Onkyo TX-NR777 the left Front speaker just gave up the ghost. I confirmed it is not the speaker itself as it works on another device. The subwoofer as well as stoped working. Both issues remained after a factory reset and a firmware update. Thoughts ie should I get it fixed or just look for a new device altogether?
Thanks for the info, mine has been dead for about a year now. Mine started by being intermittent. Now I can try your method and not be out anything because I was considering junking it.
I'll put my old one up again and bake the chip a second time and see if it will come back to life again. As I was saying I got 3 years out of mine before it went out again, and because I had another older unit I just swapped it.

I just bought one that only makes sound in "direct" mode. Is that because I'm using analog inputs or is the dsp board bad?

That's a halogen MR (mirrored reflector) bulb and they're usually 30-50 watts... but be careful, they get VERY (VERY!) hot!
