I can verify this works, and works repeatedly. I mention "repeatedly" because this solution is only temporarily. The unit will work for about a year after heating the chip. The first sign you'll have to repeat the procedure is you'll get no sound when you turn it on, but if you turn it off and then on again immediately it will work. As the problem gets worse, you'll have to leave the unit on for several minutes to warm up before restarting it works. Later it will take multiple restarts. Obviously it's a thermal problem related to that chip - the permanent solution would be to replace the chip or the entire HDMI board. That may not be possible or cost-effective now that this model is so old. And if you do replace the parts, how can you be sure you're getting a chip/board where the problem has been permanently resolved instead of someone just doing this temporary fix anyway? So this is a good way to get a few more years out of this unit.

Hi, my 616 usually works fine but after using it for maybe an hour or two, the sound starts to distort to a very low volume. The temperature of hair dryer may not be sufficient to soften the underfill material. However, I don't think that it worth the investment of a new hot gun, unless you have some other usage as well.

Also helps when you turn the speaker switch on. Thanks for the tip.
What if i use a hair dryer?
You can give it a try. on high heat
Aux is not giving sound as well. Can it still be a hdmi chip fault?
Not sure whether the analog AUX is remixed for multi-channel replay. If not, then it's related to the volume IC or the amp section.
@@neighorizon-4190 thanks for the info 👍
On my 708, even the analog/rca input runs through that. The speakers won't click on unless that chip tells them to.
I have an onkyo 616 that switches on but it doesn't do any sound at all from any input, not even the wireless.I have an onkyo 616 that switches on but it doesn't do any sound at all from any input, not even the wireless.
Will this work?
Yes, very likely. Do you see the speaker map on the front display?
Yes
@@neighorizon-4190 I have a Marantz SR7005, no picture, no sound and no speaker map on display...any ideas?
I have a 2.1 pioneer system. When I play a song the subwoofer doesn't work. I need every time to set speakers in the amp menu to make subwoofer works and after turning the amp off and then on it doesn't work again. Can you help?
It seems that the setting was not saved after each change. It may also be related to the listening mode such as "direct music" or "pure direct".
@@neighorizon-4190 I also checked all the listening modes and no sound comes out of subwoofer
Hi, I have TX-SR508 and it has same sound issue but dsp chip in my avr is not bga version, what to do now? Please help
It could be that the chip is toasted, as they run very hot.
@@neighorizon-4190 so do i need to replace it ?
The main board is quite expensive. I think that you would rather buy a new receiver.
@@neighorizon-4190 can't we change the ic
Yes, you can, if you have the proper tools to do the job.
Is it possible without disassembling the receiver? I have same problem with my pioneer vsx-323-k. Only pro logic and neo6 via analog input is working. After 1-2 hours use, hdmi audio working but with some distortion and no audio after that
No
If it is going to trash anyway, but you're inclined to try something before so: Leave it plugged in and turned on running for a whille, then blow a hair dryer in the top vents for a bit to see if anything changes.
@@MrChrisRP well, i already throw that receiver away. I bought an onkyo tx-nr717 and it was perfect.
@@nobinsaputra2497 Enjoy!
Can we get a circuit board like that?
I think so, but it easily cost a few hundreds of dollars.
I have a Marantz SR7005 with no picture or sound and no speaker map, going to give this a try, I have nothing to loose
I have video and audio cutouts with pioneer av receiver. Could this be the problem too? Im using hdmi cable for 4k hdr. 1-2 seconds lost during watching movies than everything comes back again. This can happen sometimes 1-2 times in an hour or more.
Could be. However, I would also check the source and the cabling first, for instance, change a source player, an HDMI cable, or a different input on the receiver.
@@neighorizon-4190 i bought a new cable, tried other hdmi ports, also youtube in browser does the same thing if connected thru av to tv.
@@neighorizon-4190 i have Pioneer VSX932 7.2 av receiver.
@@kajmi25 Then it should be related to either the audio or video DAC. I'm not familiar with the VSX932 though.
Worked perfectly thanks!!!
Thanks so much! This worked great for me!!
grazie funziona!!!!
I have an TX-NR609 with an already warranty-replaced DSP chip. I recently lost my sound, but I still get the speaker indicators on the front of the unit. Do you think it's still worth trying to reflow the DSP?
You could give it a try, even just heat up a little bit (thermal expansion) and see the effects.
Turns out it was a config issue! Thanks for the reply tho. I basically just toggled every setting on the TV and suddenly had sound again.
hi I have 609 also, with same issue no sound, as I observed the board where there are a lot of power transistors are really fired up its untouchble even there was no load. Is this normal for onkyo? Tks, will it work using a hair dryer..😅 Cheers
My issue was solved by getting rid of my optical cable and using ARC on the HDMI instead, which I didn’t even realize excited lol
Thanks for this video😊 Now my TX-NR709 works again.😃👍
You're great! It helped ;D
Enjoy!
Glad to hear you are successful, but I am not 😢
@@baldwinwong5618 heat it longer, when I had this problem second time, I heated too short and had to repeat it.
Worked for me, used a hair dryer for 1 minute since i dont have a heat Gun
Glad that it helps
That's great luck I tried it with a hair dryer also with no luck, however, after trying it with an actual heat gun, it worked.
thanks i gonna try it tommorow
Thanks
No Flux needed?
No. I don't think that it reached reflow temperature
I have an older kenwood kr-v9030 and everything works great, but it has very low volume. Do you have any idea what to look for ? Should i try cleaning the pots ? Thank you
Greetings, I have an old TX-SR603 model that turns ON but no sound. This model does not have HDMI inputs and the board inside doesn't seem to have the particular chip.
So I'm unable to do this simple fix as shown on video.
Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Great video.
We have the same receiver and we were able to fix the sound. Thank you!!
Stil working?
Yes
@@neighorizon-4190 I have rz820, due to storm last night my onkyo sound is not coming. everything else is working fine .. its just NO SOUND. Service center mentioned something about amplifier to change.. Does this chip heating fixes the issues? or can we replace the board or the chip ??
Not sure about the problem. Normally related to the power supply. Unlikely to be the amplifier, as it should be show some error codes if the amplifier is not function properly.@@rasalerajesh
@@neighorizon-4190 i tried dimmer+power button, then tone button to see the debug mode.. none shows ??? I see alphabatical number.. service guy on phone says amplifier might needs repalcement. Do you know how to find part number and where i can buy it ?
Thx for the video! I hab the same problem and i fixed it with your tips. I've made a couple of tests with the temperature of the chip. The chip needs to be at 30° celcius to switch on. It will heat up by himself when you switch on the receiver, but it takes 5min. Then restart the receiver and everything is ok. Its the same at pioneer.
Glad that it worked for you
My onkyo HT-390 once worked with all the 5 attached boxes. But now only works with three of them. I'm not technical at all so have no clue what to change. Also, since using the sound system on my TV, steaming services like prime video and Netflix movies with dolby 5.1 don't work... So really no use of using the system. Which is just a waste... Can't find anywhere why this is an issue and if it can be resolved
Thanks for the video, works like a charm on a nr414. Another thing I noticed was that before the fix the Ethernet port was not working. Afterwards it worked again.
Those are the exact problems that I have. And despite several heating attempts of varying lengths of the dts chip, unfortunately no improvements.
Is your Onkyo receiver still working?
