For anyone that is wondering. This is still covered under warranty till end of 2018 for free repair. My 2009 TX-NR3007 stopped working after nearly a decade. I had a laptop cooler on top of the unit cooling it the entire time I owned it. I'm actually glad it broke just before the end of the extended service bullion. When I get it back i'm going to open up the cover and put a heatsink on that TI DTS chip, as I guess it gets hot regardless of a FAN cooling the receiver. Hoping for the new HDMI board with the fixed voltage 3.2 vs 3.3 as that was another revision.
Putting a headsink on the TI chip is a must, it will keep the receiver going for years and prevent this problem from happening after the repair. The TI chip gets hot on its own, and with no cooling is prone to fail again. A fan moving air out of the receiver will not cool that chip as well as a basic heatsink attached to the chip will. The newer rev of the chip is better about heat, but Onkyo should have used heatsinks from the start on these chips. While you are at it, put one of the video chip as well. It rarely has a problem, but might as well if you got the extra heatsink. It is the only other ASIC on the HDMI board that is attached via solder balls under the chip.
Might end up tossing in a couple of fans in my receiver when I get it back, but not sure yet. The Laptop cooler was doing a good job keeping the amp side nice and cool.

Hello, Mr. Have you picked up to fix a defective flash memory yamaha? I'm trying to update the firmware of a rx-v673 model and it appears on the screen sometimes 0010 and sometimes 0040, usually these devices are defective in the HDMI card or in the part of the amplifier, in the transistors of exit,

Hi Gary, I have onkyo tx sr 313 reciver, no sound. Can I use this method for it?

I got my mailing box and shipped it back this week. Doing work on it might void the free repair. Or, maybe there will be a small charge. If the fix is a new chip and they have to replace it anyway, maybe it won't matter.

I've done it like 10 times also. Last time I heated the gun to 700 degrees and cooked the chip for a minute. It worked for a week. Now, I turn the receiver on and , no sound, leave it on for a couple of mnutes, turn it off, turn back on and it works. But it will keep getting worse until doesn't work anymore. Then I'll cook it again, and so forth. I'm tired. I'll get a new receiver

Most of these devices crash in the BGA DTS and make reflow work again, but after a while it goes back, I had not seen anyone changing components, I think that here in Brazil some technicians act in bad faith and do this or change the chip or even change, change the capacitors and charge the value of the chip.

My onkyo tx nr 626 has no sound all I can see is earphone icon appears permanently on display screen. What could be the problem

Did you end up by tossing this? I think the one guy was right you need to put a heat sink on this. Also when you do this it's a good idea to cut a whole in some aluminum foil the size of the chip that way you wont have to worry so much about loosing a solder connection somewhere else.

Hi Gary and Thanks for the video. on my case when the sound stop to be heard. I also lost the icons of the 5 speakers in the display screen. so when I heat the chip with the heatgun, and the 5 icons of my speaks comes back into the display screen but with no sound.. do you think it the other CARD that needs to be heated the same way ? ( the one with the speaker connectors ) ? any other recommandation please ? because by logic , If the speaker's icons comes back this means that I m supposed to have sound, but it s not the case . Please Help

I'm surprised when you bought the soldering gun they didn't tell you that you probably should remove the board from the unit before you try to unsolder the chips

If you didn't already get it fixed last year, check here...... www.onkyousa.com/Support/service_info.php I had the 707 and it qualifies for the free fix. Yours might also.

Thanks so much.. I am mailing it to Onkyo for repair.. the yard doing so on faulty receivers till 2018.
Hopefully the work I have done on it.. gluing a heatsink to the faulty chip, hasn't voided my free repair...

yep i sent in multiple NR series recievers and my parents had a SR606 that lost the HDMI board (signal would go in and out) and they fixed theirs too. (the 606 had faulty caps). I have a 709 right now that has been thru the free repair and it works great. Now i just wish i had my own place instead of an apartment. So i could really make my polk RT15i bookshelfs sing.
