It's 8 years later and this is still a valuable video! My Onkyo SR-606 has been taking longer and longer to connect the HDMI to the TV, with HDCP error messages becoming more frequent as it takes minutes for the Roku player to see the TV through the receiver. I finally ordered 50V, 105C, surface mount capacitors from eBay to replace the original 4V 100 uF capacitors. The original capacitors are both heat and voltage stressed. The design operates then too close to their maximum rated voltage and it sure does get hot in there. The replacement capacitors proved too wide to fit without bending leads and then, once soldered, I had to resolder them and lean them over because they became too tall with the bent leads, but after all that, it worked! Just like it says on the tin. Many thanks. Warning: Be extremely slow and careful bending leads on surface mount capacitors. They're quite fragile and will snap off. They're not really designed to be bent.
I always think it's great that people like you share your knowledge in the form of excellent tutorials on the internet. With my Onkyo SR607 it worked perfectly, even though the capacitors were arranged slightly differently on the HDMI board and only on the back. Thank you so much!!!

The biggest thing I learned was your sticky-tack trick for holding the capacitors in place for soldering. I can't believe I had never seen anyone do that before. We are one of the lucky ones in that our receiver worked just fine for fiver years before exhibited the dreaded HDMI switch issue. As a VERY novice electronics person, your instructions were clear and concise. Also...the sticky tack idea is GENIUS! Hold those tiny parts in place has always been my biggest challenge when soldering, the sticky tack idea solved that! THANK YOU!
Thanks for your incredibly detailed tutorial. I did follow your instruction to the letter. Unfortunately, I was not so lucky with one of the cap leads taking some of the board with it. My only contribution for those doing this repair is to solder off the old cap rather than rocking the cap off the board. I was lucky enough to have enough room to clear a small copper area for reconnection to the board next to the small remaining crater. Again, thanks for the clear instructions for replacing all the faulty caps and the advice for upgrading caps. It now works again flawlessly. Thank you.

Worked like a charm! THANK YOU!!!!! I've never attempted any circuit board repair before and only soldered a few times in my life. Your instructions are spot on and I fixed my issue in about an hour or so! Picture and sound would cut out about once a minute after the receiver warmed up. Just watched 2.5 hours and no cut outs at all!

I have a slightly different model but replaced the same capacitors and worked like a charm. Don't be afraid to try this if you are having HDMI issues on your onkyo this was not a difficult project after watching this video.
Great video! I have dealt with this issue for years. So frustrating. This fix was easy and took me less than 20 minutes. One small note...the part number for the resistor listed does not match the description on the resistor. The parts received however worked PERFECT. I am so happy. Thanks for your help.

Great how to video. I repaired mine over the weekend and now it works perfectly. One big difference is my model is the TX-SR607 and the HDMI board is laid out differently. All 5 capacitors are on the back side of the circuit board and in different locations than this video shows. Not a problem because the 5 capacitors that need changing are the only CAP ALUM 100UF 4V 20% SMD on the board. Easy to spot because they are the smallest ones.

I can't thank you enough ..... I was having problems with my SR606 and didn't really know which component was failing. But then I just googled the problem and was presented with several links. I was impressed with your DIY instructions. Well, I never soldered anything in my life but I thought it was worth a try. I ordered replacement chips, solder iron and solder for $20 bucks. SUCCESS! The amp is running perfect...you saved me at least $500 dollars on a new amp.
I had the same problems with my Onkyo TX-NR737. At first I thought of broken cables or problems with the TV or DVD devices. The error could be limited to the HDMI board. Your video motivated me to replace the capacitors myself. These are placed differently on the TX NR737. After replacing all aluminum capacitors, the receiver works again. I'm making myself take the time to write a big thank you for sharing. This issue with my Onkyo TX SR606 has been bugging me for years. Even though messing with a circuit board was a little daunting, particularly knowing my non-soldering skills, I gave it a go. I sourced some capacitors locally here in Australia from a company called element14. I followed your instructions to the letter and crossed my fingers that I hadn't fried my board! Viola! The bloody Telly turned on straight away! I'm stoked! Thank you so much for making a well explained and easy to follow video.
Good on Ya for giving it a go. I can imagine how scary it easy with no electronics-soldering experience. I figure people trying this have nothing to lose. $500 for a new unit, a couple hundred to maybe have someone fix it. You can now put this on your CV
The HDMI on my Onkyo TX SR606 recently stopped working. It was gradual so I thought it was something with the Roku or some BS firmware/software incompatibility. The receiver is 14 years old but still sounds great and is in perfect shape so it seemed like a shame to toss it and get a new one just because the HDMI wasn't working. Thanks to your video instruction and $5 in parts from Digikey, the HDMI is back up and running. One thing to note, the legs on the surface mounted caps are very fragile so be careful when bending them. Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to make and post this video!

LEGEND!! This worked a treat, thank you! ❣ 11 years later - wow!😲 I've just replaced these capactitors on my Onkyo TX-SR607 and it worked a treat! All the HDMI's work again straight away without having to wait 20 minutes for it to warm up. Like others have said, on the SR607 the 5 caps are all on the bottom of the HDMI board and they are really easy to replace if you follow these instrctions. Using the piece of bluetac to hold the caps whilst you solder them is a master stroke! What a tip!! 😆 I'd have never been able to do it without the bluetac.. 🤣 I replaced mine with 16v ones from Ali Express which came in at about £5 (and I accidentally ordered 60 of them!, instead of 6). They were slightly larger, but in truth that probably made it easier to position them. Apparently they are 105c ones, but I'll not hold my breath.. 😅 My only remaing problem now is the OSD still doesn't work, but I'm going to try a reset and see if that does anything. The unit is definitely trying now because the screen flashes off and back on when I exit the setup menus from the LCD readout.
Thank you so much for posting this video! My amp (new in about 2007- it lasted a fair while!) was taking longer and longer to bring the HDMI inputs up after switching on. I'd even resorted to turning it on half and hour before I was going to use it to let it warm up! I used a set of 'standard' solder through capacitors rated at 10V. Definitely easier to handle than surface mount types- just clip the legs to the right length. With the blutac trick, it took about 45 minutes start to finish including untangling the web of speaker cable at the back!
Had this reciever installed at my parents since it was just standing around. However after a while it stopped accepting switching from different sources hooked up to the reciever. Followed this guide and it worked like a dream. Just had to make sure not to heat any components more than needed. Thx alot for this guide!
@@urretard5934 think it was a 607 old one. Can't answer about your receiver tho, only knows onkyo is a solid brand. Yeah as long as u have basic soldering skills u will be fine 👍

I had to do this last night and all worked a treat, my soldering skills were a little rusty but brilliant video many thanks patpat for posting, my amp works superbly now quick change of channels and no waiting around for ever to pick up the hdmi signal!
Worked great for me. Thank you for the very clear and thorough instructions. I did not have any blue tac putty so I pre-deposited a little blob of solder on the pads then held the capacitor leads on the solder blobs usind a little plastic clip to hold the capacitor, thereby keeping my fingers away from the heat while I reflowed the solder. Thank you so so so much for posting this video. I was using a optical cable all along due to hdmi not detecting in time. The capacitors cost 5 USD but shipping 75 USD lol :-). Worth the money and the joy of being able to fix on your own - priceless..

10 years old video but keeps on giving! I just bought a TX-SR606 from FaceBook Marketplace without testing first (shame on me). Lo and behold HDMI not working. The previous owner not only told me HDMI was working, but obviously attempted this same repair (shame on him!). I removed all his butchered soldering job caps and replaced with brand new as per this video. Worked like a charm! This video saved me $75, I know it's not much, but it's a matter of a principle. Here it 2022 and my unit purchased in 2008 started having video problems using the HDMI system. This video made a lot of sense and worked for my TX-SR606's repair which had started dropping Netflix videos every few minutes or so and I had to keep hitting "resume playing". I used 16 volt caps to play it safe and had no problems bending the leads to match the pads on the board. The only thing I can add for those not familiar with surface mount components is, once the caps are removed, tin (that's a term for putting some solder on) both the board's pads being careful not to over heat them and the capacitor's leads. This makes it much easier to solder the caps in place without over heating. I used some modeling clay to hold the cap's in place and the sticky is a nice idea too. Also be very careful when bending the cap's leads and soldering not to have them touch the metal can as it might short out.

So, I know little to nothing about electronics and have certainly never opened a receiver before. I have a SR606 and purchased a brand new Pioneer for $546 but decided to give this fix a try. I ordered the parts from DigiKey as you had recommended and followed your instructions. That very evening after the fix was done, I returned the new receiver and am happy to say that my old one works like new! The service centre here wanted $75 to look at the receiver and also said that the aforementioned problem was not known to them as a common problem. I decided to do it myself and with your help fixed the issue for $10.40 so THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! and a hundred times over THANK YOU .....
This fix worked great for my SR606. I used some spare 100uf caps of different styles. (radial, axial, various voltages, etc..) When inspecting the HDMI board, I didn't see any writing saying: "ONKYO" This leads me to believe it is a generic card that may be used in other receivers. If your board looks similar, and it's caps have same values, then this fix could help. Thanks for the video! It saved me from buying a new receiver.

Great video - massive help. My unit went awol after 10 years and has now been working brilliantly for a week now. I changed 2 more 100 uF capacitors while I was at it anyway and the board was out - C276 on top and C8607 underneath on the basis they were probably knackered as well. Also fitted 2 12V brushless low noise computer fans to the underside of the main cover to increase cooling (plenty of room), They start up when the main unit turns on on the power switch - picking up the blue and white big wires to the main transformer via a 230V/12v led transformer

Made the capacitor changes as described in the video and my HDMI function has been restored to my ONKYO TX SR606. $8 with shipping for 10 capacitors from DigiKey, I ordered a few extras just in case, and they worked perfect. Thanks for the comprehensive video Pat !!!!
Thanks for the tutorial! Never done any soldering like this before and the legs on my SMD condensators were very TINY. I would recommend getting condensators with longer legs if you're a n00b. Messed about for ages with the soldering and thought I had killed the board for sure - switched on the receiver and got an E2PROM ERROR, which magically just went away and now my Onkyo TX-SR606 is working like a charm again! I was seconds away from throwing it away before I found this video, so THANK YOU :)
Had no HDMI output over 480p from my Onkyo HT-R667. Ordered the digi-key caps and installed, easy as pie. All works fine now!! Thanks for putting this together so well.
8 years later and this fix h was successful again, replaced the 100uf cap on the top of the HDMI board and tested to see if it would work and it does. I'll replace the others since I'm already into it but thanks for the great video!!
I replaced the 5 capacitors 100 uF caps last night, took about 2 hours total for me. The HDMI switching now works properly at a full 1080p (1920x1080). Prior to the fix, I had to run my HTPC at 1776x1000 resolution, and my PS3 and 1080i, since 1080p refused to sync over HDMI. Also my onscreen display now works again (though it seemed to take a while for it to begin working, perhaps I need to replace the other caps). I'm a happy camper. Thanks so much for the video. October 2018: Thank you for posting this video. My TX-SR606 had FINALLY started exhibiting HDMI issues. Ordered the parts and replaced the five caps...and it's BACK TO LIFE!!! Good as new!!!! Thank you!!!
Damn. Seems I'm unlucky , I have the tx-nr676 bought it on the 22nd this month last year and just today the screen was flickering/audio cutting out... BUT I guess not too unlucky cuz I bought a 4 year warranty so I'll keep having it fixed for free till warranty is up then possibly switch brands
I know you post 3 years ago but to you remember which ones you change the ones they are on the 607 they are 220uf ones on digi is 100uf also the capacitor numbers don't match. Thank you
I have a newer revision of the board I think, but the fix still works. Note that the first capacitor number is wrong, it's C8609 not C6809! Right place though. Many thanks :) Also I bought higher temperature rated parts with a higher voltage to prevent it happening again in some years time...
Replacing the capacitors on the 706 went smooth but removing the board was difficult. It just didn't want to slide out if the white connectors on the side. Ended up popping a radial lead in the process and had to order one from overseas. Also, be sure to use a good iron while working on these projects if you are a beginner. Crappy irons really make things difficult. Found a super nice 607 for next to nothing and am going at it again. Receiver works great except for the HDMI so hope I scored another good one. Replaced all of those series of capacitors in my Onkyo TX-SR706, (10 years old), total cost $4.95, the HDMI circut board is now working perfectly. Thanks, it was very easy and quick, probably saved me $500 for a replacement, ( had decided on Yamaha if this didn't work).
Nice idea with the Blu-tack :) I've got one of these (plus a 507 I bought secondhand, not set it up yet), good to know that if this fault develops it's an easy fix.
Thanks for the walk through on this. Just completed the procedure and things seem to be working perfectly! I even knocked one of the really tiny capacitors off the board and was able to reattach it.
Thanks for the great tutorial which had me so excited that I cut out of work to go pick up some capacitors at Fry's. Although I fancy myself a decent solderer of electronics when removing the first capacitor I ripped one of the tracks out. De-soldering is what I have always done and should have followed my SOP on this one too. My fault and still a great fix that has helped many save $ and recycled.
My whole family thanks you for this video. I just fixed my TX-SR604 using the guidance provided in this video. This model only has 3 of the problematic capacitors (2 on the top and 1 on the bottom) since it has 2 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output. The $5 in parts (with shipping and a few spares) needed to fix the problem was a bargain. The half-hour of time it took me to do the repair was made up after turning the TV on twice and being able to watch it immediately (since it took 15 minutes to get a picture before). Thanks again!
Great video. I have the TX-SR607, the only difference is all the capacitors are on the bottom side of the board. I've never soldiered a thing in my life until last night. Fix worked without any issues. I waited until today, to give the receiver a chance to start cold. Yesterday it would have taken 5-10 minutes to "warm up" before I got a signal from my cable box. It fired up immediately on the first try!! Awesome video!
This video helped me fix my SR607. The board is slightly different and has 5 100uF caps on the underside but none on the top. I replaced all 5 with some through-hole 16V 100uF caps that I had on hand and it fixed the issue. I just soldered them to the surface mount pads and bent them over to lay flat on their sides.

Your video is very well set out. I had the exact fault on my Onkyo tx nr606 and decided to have a go. First go at soldering too but it worked!! Really happy to not have to retire the amp. Thanks so much and the blue tac trick is key.

Great how to video. I repaired mine over the weekend and now it works perfectly. One big difference is my model is the TX-SR607 and the HDMI board is laid out differently. All 5 capacitors are on the back side of the circuit board and in different locations than this video shows.
Not a problem because the 5 capacitors that need changing are the only CAP ALUM 100UF 4V 20% SMD on the board. Easy to spot because they are the smallest ones.

I can't thank you enough ..... I was having problems with my SR606 and didn't really know which component was failing. But then I just googled the problem and was presented with several links. I was impressed with your DIY instructions. Well, I never soldered anything in my life but I thought it was worth a try. I ordered replacement chips, solder iron and solder for $20 bucks. SUCCESS! The amp is running perfect...you saved me at least $500 dollars on a new amp.

I had the same problems with my Onkyo TX-NR737. At first I thought of broken cables or problems with the TV or DVD devices. The error could be limited to the HDMI board. Your video motivated me to replace the capacitors myself. These are placed differently on the TX NR737. After replacing all aluminum capacitors, the receiver works again. I documented the exchange and created my own video instructions. Thanks for your inspiration!

I'm making myself take the time to write a big thank you for sharing. This issue with my Onkyo TX SR606 has been bugging me for years. Even though messing with a circuit board was a little daunting, particularly knowing my non-soldering skills, I gave it a go. I sourced some capacitors locally here in Australia from a company called element14. I followed your instructions to the letter and crossed my fingers that I hadn't fried my board! Viola! The bloody Telly turned on straight away! I'm stoked! Thank you so much for making a well explained and easy to follow video.
Good on Ya for giving it a go. I can imagine how scary it easy with no electronics-soldering experience. I figure people trying this have nothing to lose. $500 for a new unit, a couple hundred to maybe have someone fix it. You can now put this on your CV
The HDMI on my Onkyo TX SR606 recently stopped working. It was gradual so I thought it was something with the Roku or some BS firmware/software incompatibility. The receiver is 14 years old but still sounds great and is in perfect shape so it seemed like a shame to toss it and get a new one just because the HDMI wasn't working. Thanks to your video instruction and $5 in parts from Digikey, the HDMI is back up and running. One thing to note, the legs on the surface mounted caps are very fragile so be careful when bending them. Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to make and post this video!

I've just replaced these capactitors on my Onkyo TX-SR607 and it worked a treat! All the HDMI's work again straight away without having to wait 20 minutes for it to warm up. Like others have said, on the SR607 the 5 caps are all on the bottom of the HDMI board and they are really easy to replace if you follow these instrctions. Using the piece of bluetac to hold the caps whilst you solder them is a master stroke! What a tip!! 😆 I'd have never been able to do it without the bluetac.. 🤣 I replaced mine with 16v ones from Ali Express which came in at about £5 (and I accidentally ordered 60 of them!, instead of 6). They were slightly larger, but in truth that probably made it easier to position them. Apparently they are 105c ones, but I'll not hold my breath.. 😅
My only remaing problem now is the OSD still doesn't work, but I'm going to try a reset and see if that does anything. The unit is definitely trying now because the screen flashes off and back on when I exit the setup menus from the LCD readout.

Thank you so much for posting this video! My amp (new in about 2007- it lasted a fair while!) was taking longer and longer to bring the HDMI inputs up after switching on. I'd even resorted to turning it on half and hour before I was going to use it to let it warm up!
I used a set of 'standard' solder through capacitors rated at 10V. Definitely easier to handle than surface mount types- just clip the legs to the right length. With the blutac trick, it took about 45 minutes start to finish including untangling the web of speaker cable at the back!

Had this reciever installed at my parents since it was just standing around. However after a while it stopped accepting switching from different sources hooked up to the reciever. Followed this guide and it worked like a dream. Just had to make sure not to heat any components more than needed. Thx alot for this guide!

I had to do this last night and all worked a treat, my soldering skills were a little rusty but brilliant video many thanks patpat for posting, my amp works superbly now quick change of channels and no waiting around for ever to pick up the hdmi signal!

Worked great for me. Thank you for the very clear and thorough instructions. I did not have any blue tac putty so I pre-deposited a little blob of solder on the pads then held the capacitor leads on the solder blobs usind a little plastic clip to hold the capacitor, thereby keeping my fingers away from the heat while I reflowed the solder. 10 years old video but keeps on giving! I just bought a TX-SR606 from FaceBook Marketplace without testing first (shame on me). Lo and behold HDMI not working. The previous owner not only told me HDMI was working, but obviously attempted this same repair (shame on him!). I removed all his butchered soldering job caps and replaced with brand new as per this video. Worked like a charm! This video saved me $75, I know it's not much, but it's a matter of a principle. Here it 2022 and my unit purchased in 2008 started having video problems using the HDMI system. This video made a lot of sense and worked for my TX-SR606's repair which had started dropping Netflix videos every few minutes or so and I had to keep hitting "resume playing". I used 16 volt caps to play it safe and had no problems bending the leads to match the pads on the board. The only thing I can add for those not familiar with surface mount components is, once the caps are removed, tin (that's a term for putting some solder on) both the board's pads being careful not to over heat them and the capacitor's leads. This makes it much easier to solder the caps in place without over heating. I used some modeling clay to hold the cap's in place and the sticky is a nice idea too. Also be very careful when bending the cap's leads and soldering not to have them touch the metal can as it might short out.

So, I know little to nothing about electronics and have certainly never opened a receiver before. I have a SR606 and purchased a brand new Pioneer for $546 but decided to give this fix a try. I ordered the parts from DigiKey as you had recommended and followed your instructions. That very evening after the fix was done, I returned the new receiver and am happy to say that my old one works like new! The service centre here wanted $75 to look at the receiver and also said that the aforementioned problem was not known to them as a common problem. I decided to do it myself and with your help fixed the issue for $10.40 so THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! and a hundred times over THANK YOU .....

This fix worked great for my SR606. I used some spare 100uf caps of different styles. (radial, axial, various voltages, etc..)
When inspecting the HDMI board, I didn't see any writing saying: "ONKYO" This leads me to believe it is a generic card that may be used in other receivers. If your board looks similar, and it's caps have same values, then this fix could help.

Great video - massive help. My unit went awol after 10 years and has now been working brilliantly for a week now. I changed 2 more 100 uF capacitors while I was at it anyway and the board was out - C276 on top and C8607 underneath on the basis they were probably knackered as well. Also fitted 2 12V brushless low noise computer fans to the underside of the main cover to increase cooling (plenty of room), They start up when the main unit turns on on the power switch - picking up the blue and white big wires to the main transformer via a 230V/12v led transformer

Just wanted to give my thanks to you and the other people that figured out which 5 capacitors needed to be changed and for the very informative video...... using the blue tack was the best bit, never thought about using that to hold things while soldering before.... always had my girlfriend in here.

Thanks for the tutorial! Never done any soldering like this before and the legs on my SMD condensators were very TINY. I would recommend getting condensators with longer legs if you're a n00b. Messed about for ages with the soldering and thought I had killed the board for sure - switched on the receiver and got an E2PROM ERROR, which magically just went away and now my Onkyo TX-SR606 is working like a charm again! I was seconds away from throwing it away before I found this video, so THANK YOU :)

8 years later and this fix h was successful again, replaced the 100uf cap on the top of the HDMI board and tested to see if it would work and it does. I'll replace the others since I'm already into it but thanks for the great video!!
I replaced the 5 capacitors 100 uF caps last night, took about 2 hours total for me. The HDMI switching now works properly at a full 1080p (1920x1080). Prior to the fix, I had to run my HTPC at 1776x1000 resolution, and my PS3 and 1080i, since 1080p refused to sync over HDMI. Also my onscreen display now works again (though it seemed to take a while for it to begin working, perhaps I need to replace the other caps). I'm a happy camper. Thanks so much for the video. Damn. Seems I'm unlucky , I have the tx-nr676 bought it on the 22nd this month last year and just today the screen was flickering/audio cutting out...
BUT I guess not too unlucky cuz I bought a 4 year warranty so I'll keep having it fixed for free till warranty is up then possibly switch brands

I know you post 3 years ago but to you remember which ones you change the ones they are on the 607 they are 220uf ones on digi is 100uf also the capacitor numbers don't match. Thank you
I have a newer revision of the board I think, but the fix still works. Note that the first capacitor number is wrong, it's C8609 not C6809! Right place though. Many thanks :) Also I bought higher temperature rated parts with a higher voltage to prevent it happening again in some years time...

Replacing the capacitors on the 706 went smooth but removing the board was difficult. It just didn't want to slide out if the white connectors on the side. Ended up popping a radial lead in the process and had to order one from overseas. Also, be sure to use a good iron while working on these projects if you are a beginner. Crappy irons really make things difficult. Found a super nice 607 for next to nothing and am going at it again. Receiver works great except for the HDMI so hope I scored another good one. Thanks again for the very well made video.

Replaced all of those series of capacitors in my Onkyo TX-SR706, (10 years old), total cost $4.95, the HDMI circut board is now working perfectly. Thanks, it was very easy and quick, probably saved me $500 for a replacement, ( had decided on Yamaha if this didn't work).

Thanks for the great tutorial which had me so excited that I cut out of work to go pick up some capacitors at Fry's. Although I fancy myself a decent solderer of electronics when removing the first capacitor I ripped one of the tracks out. De-soldering is what I have always done and should have followed my SOP on this one too. My fault and still a great fix that has helped many save $ and recycled.
My whole family thanks you for this video. I just fixed my TX-SR604 using the guidance provided in this video. This model only has 3 of the problematic capacitors (2 on the top and 1 on the bottom) since it has 2 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output. The $5 in parts (with shipping and a few spares) needed to fix the problem was a bargain. The half-hour of time it took me to do the repair was made up after turning the TV on twice and being able to watch it immediately (since it took 15 minutes to get a picture before). Thanks again!

Great video. I have the TX-SR607, the only difference is all the capacitors are on the bottom side of the board. I've never soldiered a thing in my life until last night. Fix worked without any issues. I waited until today, to give the receiver a chance to start cold. Yesterday it would have taken 5-10 minutes to "warm up" before I got a signal from my cable box. It fired up immediately on the first try!!

This video helped me fix my SR607. The board is slightly different and has 5 100uF caps on the underside but none on the top. I replaced all 5 with some through-hole 16V 100uF caps that I had on hand and it fixed the issue. I just soldered them to the surface mount pads and bent them over to lay flat on their sides.
