Hi ladies. I am white and grew up in Poland in Lublin. It was quite a few years already that I left to USA but I went through 19 years of my life without seeing even one black person in public. That is true people will stare mostly because they are curious and they wouldn't believe why would you want to live in Poland. Especially older generation will have no idea about Africa or black race so they might be asking funny questions lol it is probably much better now but please don't take the stares as bad thing you might be the first black person they have ever seen 🙂

Yes, I am also Polish born and raised but living now in Canada. I was 18 when I first time seen a black person in reality not on the screen. The stares are really because we have no clue “ why the heck would you choose to live in Poland! There is UK, Germany, Spain…just better countries to live in as per economical aspect lol “ and definitely older generations, have never ever seen black person not even in a tv. So states are more of a curiosity, not a judgment.
Even though we study about Africa, we know quite a lot as per geography etc that would be it 🤷🏻‍♀️ I hope you feel welcomed and feel like at home. Polish people are great hosts and we say “Guest in the house - God in the house”

Good advice, one day you may consider leaving Warszawa and explore polish countryside for instance seeing Zakopane, Kazimierz Dolny , Toruń, Malboark. Then you Polish 101 may come in handy: th-cam.com/video/pn-vU38phlw/w-d-xo.html

Interesting insights about living in Poland if you are coming from the African continent. One thing I would like to add is that Poland unlike Western Europe and U.S did not colonize or enslave any nations in Africa. So something to keep in mind when you come to Poland - you don't have this terrible legacy of exploitations of Africans.

And don't think that if someone doesn't talk to you, they don't like you right away or they're racists. People are different and may fear that they will not get along due to the lack of a common language. Often foreigners also have racial, cultural and moral prejudices against Poles and I do not mean only people from Africa, but especially people from the so-called Western world. It is difficult to lead someone out of the stereotypes about Poles. And even harder if there is a language barrier.

I had my Brazilian girlfriend visit me. She wasn't black herself but she had a dark skin, one of her grandfathers was black. After around 3 weeks we were sitting on a bus and she turns to me - babe, I think this is the first non white person I've seen in this country. Something I wouldn't notice myself but I realised that she might have felt somehow uncomfortable being the only non white person everywhere she went.
By the way, Lodz isn't "another smaller city" it's the second biggest city in Poland :)
From the historical perspective something to bare in mind is that countries with the higher number of black citizens are the countries with colonial past - UK, France, Portugal, Netherlands, Spain...not so much, even though they were a colonial superpower there are not that many black people there . The vast majority of European countries did not have colonies nor slavery so most of their black population is relatively new -2-3 generations resulting in labour migration of the 20th century. Eastern Europe is a case of it's own because most of the countries were occupied by more powerful neighbours in the 20th century therefore they were not a promising destination just like for instance Ireland which was occupied by UK. Then, during the WW2 most ethnic minorities were deemed inferior and persecuted by the Nazis leaving most of the Eastern bloc 99% white. During the time of communism that followed the access to those countries was limited and again, due to communism and poor economic perspectives they were not attractive for foreigners to settle in.
Oddly enough, during communism, the Soviet Union promoted racial equality, as well as sex equality. They promoted communism in some African countries and opened their borders to people from those countries. Most of the black people who lived in Poland prior to 1989 and the end of communism came from Nigeria, they were former students or university staff that arrived in Poland back in the 60's or 70's.

According to Poland's Central Statistical Office (GUS), Poland's unemployment remained flat at 6.1 percent m/m in July 2020.
The discrepancy between GUS and Eurostat figures results from the use of different methodologies.
The number of unemployed registered in labour offices stood at 544,000 in July against 556,000 in June, Eurostat said.
The eurozone (EA19) seasonally-adjusted unemployment figure rose to 7.9 percent in July 2020 from 7.7 percent in June.
The EU27 average unemployment rate in July 2020 increased to 7.2 percent from 7.1 percent in the previous month.
