    Polish people are like an onion - you peel those layers one by one as you are becoming their friend. Once you get to a core of this onion, they are the most loyal individuals you can find: they will stick with you in good and bad times, they will introduce you to their families. The last thing, Poles are not interested in superficial friendships but the real ones so their circle of real friends is not wide.

    I know, that it is a old video, but I want to share my experience with renting apartment. I'm white Polish and I had the same situations many times when I was looking for a new place to settle. I made an appointments, only to get text hour after, that it is already rented to someone else. Or I ride to the place and could only kiss the handle. Owner didn't pick up the phone, nor answer texts. Sometimes I was welcomed with short sentence - already rented. Honestly I don't think, that people didn't want to rent you apartment because of your skin colour - it is just really hard to do it for anyone and you have to be very fast. Once I called someone 10 minutes after ad was published and... it was already rented! There is just not enough housing in big cities here.

      Even in Gdansk region, some landlords do not wish the rent their apartments to "dark skinned" expats. Some make it this much clear. Someday we will all get over this perspective and bias.

    So you think that we Poles are not friendly enough ?
    Maybe it's because when we call someone a friend, we really think so and we really mean it.
    I know that in other cultures it is enough to stand behind someone in a queue to call him a friend. When I can't explain it to someone, I just say, "Poland is different"

    • @princesschichi
      @princesschichi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Based on the history, one will understand why Polish people do not warm up easily, However, for someone meeting a Polish for the first time in Poland,I will say the reception is rather different🙂,

      There is a massive difference between "friends" and "being friendly". Poles can make good friends in the long run, but are NOT generally 'friendly'! I AM a Pole who moved to Canada 35 years ago, so -believe me- I know the difference. Poles are generally reserved, keeping their distance, NOT easy to approach. The only Polish friends I still have in Poland are the ones I grew up with before I left the country (at the age of 22). These days, when I visit Poland, I can only see degrees of 'friendliness' or 'unfriendliness'. (Not to be confused with being 'polite' or 'unpolite'.) Even though I still speak the language fluently, I am no longer 'from there', I am a bit of a 'stranger', a 'foreigner'.

  • @Dares9
    @Dares9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Polish people are at first distrustful, because they're afraid and shy/insecure. Hence this wall between you. But like you said, once they warm up, it's friendship HARD. Provided you find the right people, they're very loyal friends.

6:50 and there is about this topic a weird thing that when Polish people go to more open and more social countries they feel FREE as birds. There is in Poland this aura of hostility and distrust toward other people. Actually when foreigners come here they have easier to socialize be cause Polish people have distrust only toward eachother - toward other polish people. It's weird. Our country has been polarized for centuries by occupants. To this day we are polarized. People who rule this country practice an old roman empire motto "divide et impera/divide and rule". They constantly initiate conflicts in society in order to remain power - we have 2 party dictatorship like in america. Country is being constantly divided on 2 political groups.
    I think this is why Poland is not very socially open. Our occupants in warsaw are dividing us every day - this is how they remain in power which give them oportunities to rob us in taxes everyday. Unfortunately Polish people dont see this cynical game they participate in - they are totallu unaware of fakeness of those conflicts - those conflicts are initiated only to steal their money and freedom.
    A country and society that is divided from within and have huge distrust toward eachother is easy to control - those political mobsters know it and they ruthlessly use it against us.

    Regarding talking about politics. First of all, it's a bad idea to talk about politics if you're in a foreign country. It's not that it's inappropriate, it's about competence. Such a conversation will at most boil down to comments about who has a nicer tie. Secondly, unfortunately democracy has reached such a level that most people (voters!) aren't able to talk about anything other than ties and emotions. These people have been deliberately led to this point. One politician put it bluntly - that the only topic should be whether there's hot water in the tap. It's just easier to manage that way. The result is that a patented idiot is elected as an MP, who in the face of a hybrid war arranges comedies on the state border. His voters weren't even convinced by the further, predictable development of the situation to a full-scale war. It's not true Poles don't talk about politics. The older generation even talks too passionately. Most of the young are deliberately distracted from serious topics. And it's done openly, just like this message about hot water - it's enough to look at the cultural message and its reception. But democracy in general is a management of emotions and people are also just tired of the subject. I don't know what form conversations about politics take in Nigeria? Small talks?
