- Penn State Football has entered the fall camp period with all eyes on the upcoming 2023 season, and on Late Kick Live Ep 412 Josh Pate discussed the different possible record scenarios. Buckeye fan here…PSU has the potential to be scary this year. Also don’t forget the revenge factor for Allar against OSU. In-state kid that they ignored until Ewers left, he went with the team that wanted him and I don’t blame him one bit.
I’ve never been less afraid of Penn State and it has more to do with us than they.
As long as Franklin trusts his coordinators and lets them call the game...
Penn state fan here, we have the potential to Nick off one of the two but I don’t think it’s our year unfortunately, Ohio State has always been our kryptonite

@@brandonster4203We hung with the Buckeyes until the very end of the game last year! it was Michigan who steam rolled us pretty much from the very start. I think we can play with Ohio State; Playing in the Horse Shoe is always tough!
As a Michigan fan, I think @ Penn State is their toughest game. Really wouldn't be all that shocked if PSU pulled it out. Chop Robinson, Abdul Carter, Curtis Jacobs, Kalen King, PSU is loaded on D and has their best O-Line in Franklins time being there. Combined with Allar and those RB's who knows

My Nittany Lions 🦁 are very good and super talented and deep, and I just watched Drew Allar throw for over 300 yards, 72 percent completion percent, and 3 touchdowns, with no turnovers!!!! WE ARE 🏈 Unrivaled
PSU has ton of potential this year and I’m very excited to see what they can do!
Absolutely love Penn State. Having said that, they need to figure out how to beat Ohio State more than once every six or seven years.

It comes down to Allar… if he’s average they’re 9-3… if he’s above average they’re 10-2… if he’s all the hype and more… 11-1 or 12-0 is possible.
Clifford wasn't above average and they were 10-2.
@@ericm9029 I’m grading them on different scales. Clifford being a 16 year veteran and Allar going into his first year as a starter. I think Clifford’s “above average” was his ceiling while Allar has more…

It all comes down to coaching. Franklin needs to prove he can coach and sonfar hasn't been able to.
Penn State fan here. I'm predicting 10-2 again, but I like your prediction better lol. I think I have to see Allar as a starter before I can get too optimistic. Nonetheless, I am super excited for this season
Same boat here, 10-2 I think is a pretty safe prediction. I'm still hesitant to say that we are either going to beat Ohio State or Michigan. We gotta see Allar play a team like Iowa, and then maybe we'll have a better idea of how we could play against those big teams later on in the year

Spot on assessment. A lot will have to go wrong and injury bug will have to bite hard to end up 8-4.
As a psu fan, I think this is the best team James has had in his time at psu. I agree and think we go 11-1 and beat Ohio State. If we go 11-1, I think we could sneak into the playoffs like Ohio did last year
If we go 11-1 with a loss to Ohio State our loss would be in October which gives us time to rise in the polls. If we beat Michigan they'll likely be unbeaten and ranked 2 which would help us rise and if Michigan beat OSU. OSU loss would drop them because it's so late and no way to rebound.
Confusing but if PSU loses to OSU (don't get blown out) and beat Michigan it's a good chance we will be the highest ranked team out the 3

We are not losing to Michigan in Happy Valley in November, payback!!! If we lose a game it will be in Columbus in October in a super close game, because our defense is amazing and nasty good and going to keep us in every single game, literally!!!! Young Drew Allar will have time to get comfortable with this amazing defense to help him get caught up offensively!!! WE ARE

If you look at the schedules for Texas, FSU and Georgia...they have it easy...they will win the remainder of their games by even 1 point and the BIASES ASSHOLES called voters and "Playoff" committee will put them in ahead of Penn State.....Penn State has to go 13 - 0 to even be considered for the playoff...considering that a PAC 12 team that goes 13-0 with all their razzle-dazzle offense and NO defense will get in head of an unbeaten Penn State even if Penn State is the B1G conference Champion at 13-0. Essentially Penn State has to beat the Kansas City Chiefs and go 14-0 to get BEDRUDGINGLY selected to be in the "play-with-yourself-off".
I do think PSU messed up not starting that walk-on QB Chad Powers.
This comes down to 1) Allar, 2), WRs, 3) DTs, 4) Injuries, and 5) STs. If Allar puts up a Drake Maye type season then PSU's floor is 10 games.
The WRs is a question market because we don't know if KLS is going to be a playmaker like Jahan Dotson or more of what we had last year.
The coaches seem to think the DTs are better this year than last as a unit. But we lost the UM game in the trenches.
This is true for every team but injuries matter. People forget PSU was ranked #4 in 2021 when we played #3 Iowa on the road. I think we lost 4 key players in that game including Clifford and the season collapsed. The coaches believe this team has more depth in every position to avoid that this year. We lost two NFL 1st caliber players last year and still finished 11-2 so that's a good sign.
Lastly, this isn't being discussed enough, but we have no idea who our kicker and kickoff specialist is going to be. It'll crush me if we lose to OSU or UM because of one or two missed FGs.
In terms of just talent, I believe this is an 11-win team. I don't see 8 wins happening unless the injuries mount. 12 is not impossible because UM didn't beat OSU until they finally climbed the wall.
If Penn state goes 10-2 their fan base will literally die inside
Nah, we've had a long series of painful lessons about expecting too much from Franklin.
If we go 10-2 it will be because we lose one of the two big games because of an idiotic Franklin play call on 4th & 1 late in the 4th quarter.

I’m mostly on board with JP. I think 12-0 is the ceiling, too, but I think the floor is 9-3. I’m also looking at them to go 11-1. Overall, really good segment. Hope you get to make one of those games this season

Last year Penn State was winning through the fourth, then they turned it over. This isn’t a series that is defined by lopsided wins

Even if Allar SUCKS I think their worst is 8-4 just based on the schedule. Iowa and Illinois have a chance if their defenses can score. I have a hard time believing Allar will be a world-beater though. Thought the same with Hackenburg. Franklin seems to have a hard time making the offense work for pocket passers and has way more success with improviser QBs.
11-1 is the record. I think Penn State slaps Ohio State this year. OSU is soft and UM is showing that. Penn State matches up well against them and those RB’s are both 15 lbs heavier, a year older and faster.

I was thinking the opposite. Michigan Ohio State and Illinois slaps Penn State around as usual. And if James Franklin, Allar and especially the band wagon fans are not careful maybe a Maryland or Michigan state slaps them around. Penn State will be great against terrible teams and average to sometimes good against good to great teams. 2 loses maybe 3

If Allar is even slightly better than Sean Clifford (who everyone was calling a bad player until after he left) then i think 11-1 is reasonable

Glad Pate highlighted PSU’s game in Champaign. Gonna be a tough early road test for them.
Penn St will lose to Ohio St but beat Michigan and then MIchigan will beat Ohio St for 3 in a row and now we have a situation of all 3 teams dead locked for a play among themselves.
11-1 is a fair and prudent assessment.
Penn State has the pieces and the groundwork to be great probably the only program consistently in the top 10 the last several years of the playoff era that hasn’t stepped up to the championship stage this year they can definitely do it. I’ll say they go 10-2 beating either OSU or Michigan but losing a trap game which for me would be at Maryland that team right there is scary

If the WR's can catch and play well and the Defensive Line can stop the run, I see 12-0 and a playoff, but one game at a time! Let's beat WVU 1-0

Likely 10-2. Question marks also around West Virginia and Illinois, since WV is the first game, and it will depend on how well prepared the coaching staff has the team. And Illinois embarrassed PSU a couple of years ago in a game Penn State should have dominated. I'm not sold on Iowa, although they generally have great lines and are very physical.
Also not sold on Wisconsin; I generally think they're overrated, but every year is a new year in college football.
Anyway, enough talk, time to play.

Folks WVU ain't gonna rollover! After Brown benched pro-set statue JT Daniels and shifted to multi-dimensional Greene and Marchiol the team did a 180 degree turn-a-round. They beat Oklahoma in Morgantown scored 31 (but lost to KState) and defeated Ok State in Stillwater.
Offensively, almost the entire offense is back from the last 3 games, including portal pick ups at tight end from LSU and an All-ACC and all-Mac receivers from NCSU and Kent State, respectively. The running backs all return and include a healthy 6-4 240 lb Donaldson. I believe this offense will score!
Defensively the entire linebacker crew is back, including an All Big 12 Mike Linebacker and a PSU transfer fighting for a starting position. Safeties all return too. The D Line did lose 3 starters but 2nd team All-Big 12 DE Sean Martin returns and E.V. returns at DT, and add GT transfer Thornton at NG and PSU and TSU transfers on the other DL positions. There's lot of speed and experience at the DL! At the corner WVU acquired Minnesota's starting CB from the portal. and other returning starters.
There you have it: All positions on defense and offense have considerable playing experience at the elite level.
Now the emotional stuff: new offensive coordinator, head coach fighting for his job, multidimensional QB's and a group of experienced athletes that have been disparaged as a 3 td spread underdog!
One thing we athletes know folks, it's dangerous thing to disparage your opponents before a contest! Not to mention experienced Division 1 athletes!

I think PSU goes 11-1. Not sure if they beat UM or OSU, but really hoping it's the latter. They might even get the #4 seed in the playoff similar to OSU last year.
Cant see it this year.. Especially with the SEC not being as dominate.. I have a feeling its going to be a serious debate between champions this year..

As a BIG10 fan without a favorite team(I graduated from a MAC school so the BIG10 is my favorite P5 con but I don’t tie myself to one team), my prediction for Penn St; Best(12-0), worst(6-6), most likely(10-2)
Death, taxes, and CFB casuals saying "PSU is overhyped every year" and "they can't keep losing to both UM and OSU".

I can see them going 11-1.. Outside of Michigan and OSU.. Their toughest opponent is Iowa.. ND schedule is actually wayy wayy tougher!!

I think they're a good team, but they have a lot of question marks in the throwing game that could pan out, but likely not until next year. I think 9-3. They lose the 2 big games and 1 other. I think they get caught looking ahead to Michigan and lose @Maryland.

How did play calling have anything to do with last yrs loss to OSU? Clifford handed osu the game. 2 ints to the Dend (one of those a pick6) is the reason why they lost. Not say Franklin hasn't choked before but last yr wasn't his fault.
Michigan - Penn State is a drastically different game depending on where it’s played. Michigan hasn’t handled Penn State in Beaver Stadium since 2006, and that was a one-score game. I’d be surprised if it wasn’t a very close one.

On paper, this should be the best team Michigan has fielded in 25 years, barring injuries.
And JJ, Corum and Edwards have been there and won before, so they won't be overly impressed by the crowd.
Esp since it will be a noon game, not a white out (thanks, FOX).

I really think the O line is fixed, they have a serviceable qb, some weapons to throw to, and this might be the most talented the defense has been in years.
