Josh Pate On Penn State's Whiteout Dilemma (Late Kick Cut)

  • Penn State's whiteout is one of the great spectacles in all of College Football, and on Late Kick Live Ep 267 Josh Pate discussed the latest dilemma surrounding which game in 2022 should get the special treatment. With Ohio State paying a visit to Happy Valley this fall it seemed obvious the Buckeyes would again play in a sea of white at Beaver Stadium, but FOX selecting the game as the Big Noon Kickoff for that week threw a wrench into everyone's plans. With that in mind, Penn State recently announced the Minnesota game will be designated as the whiteout for this year. This has led to a fair amount of debate amongst Penn State fans about whether kickoff time should be the determining factor as to which game gets the treatment over how big the game itself is. What do you think? Let us know what you think in the comments below and be sure to SUBSCRIBE to the channel and CLICK THE BELL for notifications as we bring you multiple live shows per week!

    Change it to all blue and make it a new tradition of "Once in a Blue Noon". That would give them two 13th man games a year, and it maintains the Whiteout as the night game tradition.

    Can we as fans, and universities (Texas and OU specifically) boycott big noon kickoff, or at least set parameters to what games can/can't be at noon for the sake of the sport? Penn State white out games should be off the table.

    As a Penn State student, my opinion is this: The white out tradition is not just about the game. Part of the fun is tailgating all day for the game. Last year, the Michigan game was at noon, and the stadium was so loud the we caused them to false start on the first play of the game yet again. The Ohio State game will be loud regardless because of how big of a game it is, so we don’t need to worry about making it a whiteout. Make it an all blue game or the stripe game and we will be loud as usual.

    Penn state season ticketholder, I'm fine with it. This was cutting off a limb to save the body. If Fox gets a noon white out this year, they'll get it next year against Michigan and white out under the lights cease to exist. This is the best chance to get the big ten to move up the marquee matchup at beaver stadium toward end of September so fox/ESPN/whoever doesn't have a world series to compete with at night.
    Also, Penn states not equipped with its current ticketing and parking system to pack the stadium by noon start time for OSU...Minnesota will play better on national media for us

      PSU is the best parking system you will ever find in ANY sporting venue...and I've been to a lot of them over the past 50 years all over the country. (Some are HOORIBLE, once and done experiences)
      As for noon white out....see Paul Cicero's comment above...he is now the new fan appointed Marketing Director of Penn State football
      It will be a "Once in a Blue Noon" game!! Just like in the old days when everybody wore BLUE!!
      FoxSports sucks...and ESPN will always take that game for a night primetime venue. When FoxSports buys a big PSU game they will either move it to a night time slot or not get the $$$ they hoped for.
      PS: I remember the first time Joe pushed kickoff to 3 PM (kickoff was normally noon-ish, 11 to 1) to satisfy the networks so we could be on TV...he said he'd never do that again. Back then the lots opened before 6 (or even earlier) to set up big tailgates (frats always had lots of kegs and huge grills) and the drinking started at 6...by 3.....it was drunken insanity! LOL

    Though OSU not being the White Out game disappoints me as a Penn State alum, I think there's a nice storyline here that could play out and make the Minnesota matchup intriguing. If the teams can navigate their toughest tests before the Whiteout (@Purdue for PSU, @MSU for Minnesota), they can both come in 5-1 or better. This would set up a likely top 25 matchup and a perfect revenge game for PSU - ala their close 2019 loss in Minneapolis that cost PSU a potential playoff spot.

    It is a stripe out that game. So wear according to your ticket. But I will say the stripe out is our daytime version of the white out. Because we used the stripe out before during a night game and it's harder to see the blue sections near the top. But white always stands out even in the highest rows. I think giving them a stripe out on a noon kick off is the better choice because let me tell you that the energy that usually gets put into the white out by the fans will just be put into the stripe out this year

  • @michaelhession2105
    @michaelhession2105 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This makes sense. Last year they introduced the Helmet Stripe design, and they used it against Michigan and that was a Noon game. It'll look like a Whiteout on TV when they play Ohio State. Plus Minnesota is usually a Top 25 team that according to some analysts that I've chatted with nationally are the favorite to win the BIG10 West. Plus the last time the 2 teams played. The Gophers ended PSU's College Football Playoff hopes. Remember, who thought the Indiana game last year would be a night game when Penn State had a massive advantage. This may not be against Ohio State, but this possibly could be a BIG10 Championship Preview.

    Every game can be a white out no matter time of kickoff. Just tell everyone to wear white but...............a TRUE WHITEOUT has to be a night game. If they (FOX/NCAA) decided to make the OSU game a noon kickoff. I can rest assure you the B1G and OSU peeps have a huge hand in this decision. I'd be willing to say MONEY exchanged hands illegally. Especially when it comes to OSU. I think it's awesome that another B1G team gets to experience the greatest show in college football or even NFL. If you've never been to a WHITEOUT you don't know what you're missing. The atmosphere is crazy and the adrenaline it provides the fans and especially the players (even the opponents) hours before the game even kickoffs can't be measured. My best friend who hails from Corvallis, OR and is an Oregon State fan was so excited when I asked him if he'd like to come to the WHITEOUT GAME against Michigan a couple years ago. He couldn't say YES fast enough. When we arrived in State College that day you could already feel the goosebumps coming because you knew what to expect that night. As we pulled into the parking lot he was in shock. He couldn't believe how one night game could have such an effect on over 100,000 fans. Once we began our descent on Beaver Stadium as kickoff was approaching, I myself being a PENN STATE fan knew it was going to be another special night. He couldn't take it all in fast enough but once we got to our seats he couldn't believe the scene he was viewing. The game wasn't going to kickoff for another hour but the fans were already rocking the house. He commented, it's so loud right now I can't hear much of anything except the fans going nuts. When everyone was inside that was coming to the game filled up the stadium. My friend looked at me and said, thanks for inviting me to what is no doubt the best show in college football and it was justing getting started. So, that night you would of thought he was always a Penn State fan because he was roaring and chanting with all of us. My answer is YES, our WHITEOUT HAS TO BE A NIGHT GAME. It's tradition and you don't mess with tradition. Just like our uniforms and helmet. WE ARE PENN STATE for many reasons and these are two of them.

    Penn State, historically and normally, has a better than average defense, usually very good. I would expect any team playing Penn State at any time to score less than their average. Toss out your lazy stat Josh and tell us if Penn State holds opponents farther below their scoring average in white out games than they do in other games. I bet they do just because of the atmosphere, but is it significantly better?

    Night game IMO. It doesn't matter how big a noon matchup is. It always feels like a noon matchup. 3:30 PM EST or later for a white-out kick-off time works best. I would prefer 7 PM, but as long as the game finishes at night, it will be dope.

I'm not a fan of Penn State, but I always thought from my understanding that the white out game was for the biggest home game of the year?! I’m not expecting a win because I was at the same Auburn game last year, but having the fans getting upset and disenchanted by this could be great for Minnesota. Having that game sandwiched between @Michigan and OSU bodes well for the Gophers as well. Getting beat up the previous week and looking ahead to next week. I know Penn State fans are disappointed and I hope the media, the fans, the players, and the staff continue to sleep on my Gophers. 🚣🏼‍♂️〽️🐿

    • @RenegadeT1TO
      @RenegadeT1TO 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the fact that Minnesota is sandwiched between @Michigan and OSU is why it was the whiteout.
      I hate to admit it, but when Penn State loses, we often lose the next game(s) as well. Its like we shutdown.
      So if we lose to Michigan, the whiteout resets us, we ideally win, and then play OSU back in the game.
      If we win against Michigan, we focus on the whiteout and Minnesota, instead of looking ahead to OSU like we always do.
