  • This is a video manual I created with the help of Synthesis Technology for their new E520 stereo Eurorack-format Hyperion Processor. It features both updates of a number of classic effects, as well as new frequency and time domain processing tricks, all while keeping a very flat menu with a small number of powerful parameters - most of which have dedicated knobs and voltage control. Below is an index to the features:
00:00 demo of a few of the Presets
    00:40 overview
01:12 front panel controls & connections
    01:51 audio connections
    02:33 Auxiliary output
    02:46 menu & navigation overview
    03:01 changing Algorithms
03:40 getting back to the Main menu
    04:00 editing an Algorithm
    04:58 Bypass to unprocessed input
    05:07 Feedback & Wet/Dry mix
    06:02 live controls
    06:35 loading & editing algorithm-specific presets (Page 3)
    07:38 external voltage control
    08:35 Tap Tempo
    09:40 Page 2 settings
    10:36 internal LFOs
11:22 High Pass and Low Pass Filters
    11:55 saving a Preset
    12:46 Top menu
    13:04 module-wide Patches
13:32 Preferences (including display options, Input/Output Levels, and Feedback Limiter)
15:17 SD card “whole module” save & load
    15:23 UI colors
15:48 Utilities (scope, tuner, and more)
    16:07 Dual Mono algorithm
    16:15 conclusion
There is one small correction for this video: Where I said the line level maximum input is 6 volts peak to peak (±3v), SynthTech has updated it to be 5 volts peak to peak (±2.5v).
*Note that this video was shot using pre-production hardware and firmware (v.13 and .14). It was very close to the final version both, so shipping units should behave the same (with the exception that I set the display background color from blue to black to make it easier to read on video). Firmware updates beyond version 1.0 will of course introduce changes not covered in this video.

Seems like a perfect mix of depth and easy of use at the same time. 👍🏻

thanks a lot for this. I tend to think these kind of walkthroughs are very boring, but you're pacing it brilliantly here. thanks a lot! :)

Thank you - I really appreciate it. I spend far more time editing, than I do recording the video - with the goal of having good pacing, so it won't get boring.

Nice demo. When will this module be available for purchase? This seems like all in one effects module to beat for modular.

That's a question for Synthesis Technology. He has been filling direct pre-orders first, and then originally planned to ship to dealers around November. I think the builds have been going slower than planned (including receiving a bad batch of front panels), so I'm guessing February 2021 at this point. Unless you can find a used one for sale from one of the pre-order owners.

Regarding the Synth Tech E520- would you say that the E520 can cover most of the bases of the stock granular looper on the Nebulae V2? I have one and I'm considering letting it go to help fund an E520 purchase. I really love the Nebulae, but if I can easily replicate the mentioned functions with the E520 it's a no brainer to pick one up since it does so many things. Thanks in advance!

No - I would say they are very different beasts.

We specifically stayed away from being "like" effects already in the market (Clouds, ER-301, etc). I think we succeeded.

So it's a really expensive delay? I havn't quite grasped what makes this multi fx unit special. It seems like it does a lot of stuff I would use a computer for. Is it in the really high quality way it does it's effects? It seems like the delay and reverb are the main attractors and with heavy players like eventide, TC, and Lexicon did they make something that rivals other options that have decades of experience doing this? just with CV control? It spectrally crushes. But so does clouds in a back end firmware. Idk why but they didn't include a granular mode. I'd just like to know as it may be for me, but for the HP and price im not sold.

Agreed. Sadly, it seems some modular designers have become obsessed with screens. Personally, I prefer Synth Tech's older designs with no screens. This module comes across as fussy when it doesn't need to be.

When in the world will this thing hit retailers? Anytime soon? Maybe in another year or so?

He's shipping pre-orders, and expects to finish those mid-October. Dealer orders will follow after that.

Sorry if I missed it, is this hulking Hyperion running at 32bit and at least 48kHz? If it's 32/96 and under $1k, my interest will be officially piqued.

24-bit, 48 kHz, $649 suggested list. Minutes (rather than seconds) of memory. More in their web site: synthtech.com/eurorack/E520/

It you REALLY think, in a Euro power supply environment, you can get an actual 32bit SNR (as measured on an Audio Precision), I have some land in Florida I need to sell.
We use 24bits for the DSP math to allow more range in the calculations for the FFTs. Moving to 32bit math (where the lower 8 bits are random numbers due to the noise of the system CODEC in a EURO case) makes zero sense.

Hmm. Absurd hp for one stereo effect. Never seen so much blank panel space on a module. Unnecessarily gigantic knobs for essentially attenuators, and my pet hate, fx modules where the input clips easily with no physical input Attenuator knob. Great video as usual though.

I can't argue with any of that. Paul Schreiber does great work, love all my Synth Tech modules, but his esthetic comes from MOTM 5U format where size is no object. Usually have no issue with that but fully agree on this design and E370. Unnecessarily large. Would jump at a µ version of this module though. That being said, I own Radikal Technologies EFFEXX RT-1701 which is 32hp (compared to 48hp here) which has 2 stereo mutli-FX processors, dedicated stereo reverb, attenuation and overdrive of input, and stereo mutimode filter. All of that fits with no menu diving because knobs serve multiple purposes (using a shift button). It's a bit of a trade off but I'm loving it so far.

    • @LearningModular
      @LearningModular  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Well, to say it's "one" stereo effect is a bit unfair; there's lots of algorithms, some of which do multiple things, plus a dual mono mode. And I was talking to Paul about this today; he said people complained when he left attenuators off the E350, and they complained when he put them on the E352. So he knows he can't please everyone. He also refuses to create or use modules that just use trimmer shafts for controls.
For me, I would never consider this for my live case, but I replaced two large effects modules in my studio case with it.

I maybe could get 4HP out, but I wanted this to specifically fit into the 4ms 48HP PODX powered skiff. For being portable and self-contained. The #1 complaint I get is "your knobs are too close together". So I spread them out like 10mm additional from the E370. No pleasing everyone [shrug]. I guess I can mention it carries a lifetime warranty (like all my products). Does that help?

Paul Schreiber I love being able to put fingers on knobs rather then the tip of my pinky. This module sounds great and seems very comfortable to use. Thank you.

@@paulschreiber9384 I have a portable 14u MDLR case so having a mega super FX module even if large like this one would be awesome as I do prefer larger knobs and switches. More comfortable for playing since I have fat fingers. Looking forward to this module release as it looks super awesome!

My apologies. When I'm doing a formal course, I try to speak slowly, but when doing these module videos, I get too excited and speak too fast. I will try to focus more on slowing down - or at least re-saying things slower while I'm editing.
