I've said it time and time again: 'if this episode was in series 1, everyone would have thought it was genius, but since it was in series 7, everyone acts like it is shite. i always liked this story for all the reasons in this video, but i also liked the tension it placed between Eleven and Clara. i loved their performances in this, bc their relationship was pushed to the limit. and the moment where Eleven feels sad that the TARDIS is dying around him and he can't help, so Clara grabs his hand... WONDERFUL!

Nah we say it’s shit because it’s shit. If it were written in series 1 RTD would’ve overlooked it and made the script better. Moffat’s era from about mid series 6 was just a massive decline.

@@NileSWPhotography that's how u feel and i totally understand, but i disagree entirely. i liked a share of stories since mid series 6. but each to his own :) besides, series 1 had its problems as well. there were episodes that had companion used as plot devices, deuds ex machinas (yeah, those actually began in series1) , the doctor beginning to have sexual tension with a 19 yr old girl, and soap opera drama that started a trend. i can't say that rtd would have made the script better when there were flawed stories in his era, some were his own every now and again. it's not his fault, bc no one can b perfect all the time. but again, that's how u feel, and good for u ;)

I loved this episode for what it did. The plot was meh, the villains were meh, and the scavenger guys were meh, but none of that was actually the focus. The focus was on the journey through the TARDIS, we got to see more than ever before, we saw the TARDIS twist and change to defend itself, we saw it feel like a spaceship whilst also feeling alive, and we got to see the one true safe haven turn hostile. The focus was never on the plot, it was on the TARDIS, and I think that was executed brilliantly.

In see it as the TARDIS like a shape shifter or wizard who decided become a planet then humans mine on it. What do you think will happen. The shape shifter will lash out becoming a nightmare world
In my opinion it could/should of been a lot worse because it's alive and scared and being torn apart it would behave more aggressive pretective especially over Clara and the doctor
An idea for an episode is the TARDIS puts the master though a unending torture while the doctor tries to find him and convince the TARDIS in to giving up

I feel this is a significant problem with much of Moffat’s era. Episodes built around a very specific fan fic idea, which I always found as a distraction rather than a fun fact. Like the Magician's Apprentice / Witch's Familiar two parter, which was made so he could have the longest ever Davros and The Doctor conversation scene. Seriously, he went on record saying that he loves all the classic who scenes in which The Doctor meets Davros face to face. "Sparks always fly, but they are always relatively short" so he set out to build an entire episode around making a meeting between the two of them much longer. Never mind that half the reason these scenes were so good was because they were both rare and short. And it showed in this case, the longer it went on the less interesting it became.
This is not to say these are bad episodes. The Magician's Apprentice and the Witch's Familiar set the stage for what was to become my favourite season of the Moffat era. I just found this pair of episodes to be weaker than the rest.

  • @schloodie1942

I think you really glossed over the ending here. My problem with it wasn't so much that time was reset (for all the reasons you explained) but that it was reset with a "magical button" that almost came out of nowwhere. It has been a while since I've seen this episode, but if I remember correctly it went something like "if we can get to this one room before this terrible thing happens, we can fix everything". But then they get there and the thing has already happend. But fear not, because an alternative solution comes out of nowhere a minuite later. I felt so cheated! Its a deus ex machina and those really bug me. It is one of those things that can ruin an entire episode for me, which is a shame, because I like a lot of that episode.
Honestly the overuse of deus ex machina is probably the main reason for my dislike of season 7B. They were everywhere.

The big problem that i have is that it's disappointing, for someone who was disappointed with the tardis in the 4th doctor era, it was still really disappointing, most of the shorts are just hallways and the odd shots (some of which are really bad especially the ones just glimpsed though doorways, like the swiming poor) of interesting looking rooms (like the liberary, even if it looked a bit small for someone thousands of years old) and one interesting room with the eye of harmany.

I like the fact that the Tardis has a room that creates stuff for the doctor, I like the fact that it's pointed out that the Tardis is going to be upset when someone other than the Doctor tries to steal from it.... I like the fact that the Tardis is more complex... The story itself dealt with one particular aspect of Time travel well.. Doctor Who doesn't actually have 'hard rules' when it comes to time travel, so it's always fun to see them explore a different aspect of time travel.

Yeah… even after this I still can’t entirely get behind it. My biggest gripe is with the lore.
Russel T Davies established that the Time Vortex was What powered the TARDIS and its heart was an open link to that. The TV movie established that the Eye of Harmony was this mythical time thing. But in Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS it just looks like.. an engine. I love the idea of exploring the TARDIS but this strips away too much ofbthe mysticism. It felt like the Midi-Chlorians of Doctor Who.
Plus, I dont feel like the Van Braffens deserved their redemption at all. The Doctor says once that one of them isn’t entirely terrible and then at the end of the episode he’s a totally different character for… definitely a reason.
Plus, this episode also includes one of my least favorite Moffatisms: the Doctor verbally stating out loud how helpless he is. The worst offender of this was The Doctor’s Wife where he says “I don’t know what to do. That’s new~” as if it’s Moffat saying he’s the first to ever write a conundrum for the Doctor. But his “She was always there for me. Now she needs me and I don’t know what to do.” Is still just… frustrating. Moffat makes the Doctor say stuff like this just to make his stories seem significant

I disliked it when I first saw it. The big problem was the Doctor. Essentially he had some salvagers on his ship, they tried to take part of the Tardis, and he basically just stood there saying "Please don't take it.". He made no real attempt to stop them, as if physically trying to stop them was off limits for some reason.

I remember the first time i watched this episode i was at a sleepover with my friend Caitlin (who at the time i was crushing on and didn't realise. ahh repressed lesbian feels) And both of us are really big Doctor Who fans and we both really enjoyed this episode. I like 7b in general. It's over hated.

Maybe while she was a person, the TARDIS told the 11th something about the swimming pool that we don't know...

I think the title of the episode just promises more than the episode can deliver. I feel like The Doctor's Wife does more to explore the Tardis interior and mystify its space despite devoting comparatively little time to the concept. In hindsight, 'Journey' really does just feel like running around a bunch of hallways. People argue we get to see various cool rooms the Tardis contains, but most of them are just quick flashes of a greenscreen door. Ultimately 'Journey' left me feeling like the Tardis was kind of boring...which is absolutely the last thing an episode like this should make you feel.

the episode is not bad, it just has so much more potential. i wish it was a bit more like the god complex, and play up the endless time maze. and just show more rooms. also the lava monsters are weird and look rubbery. also its a shame that exploring the tardis was in this series 7 set. if it was 12's console or 9's it would have been cooler instead of just grey metal everywhere. as 10's wardrobe was probably the coolest looking tardis room. and the tardis (egg chamber) in this episode was a really cool idea but it felt kinda empty and more like a set in doctor who than a room in the tardis. and i just didnt like the brothers. the begining of the episode was cool and i wondered what was going ot happen next, but the plot just kinda got boring. anyway im glad it exists.

I really liked the TARDIS exploration in this episode, but this was actually the last Doctor Who episode that I watched as it was airing until Bill became the companion. I really hated the whole impossible girl arc so much and I really disliked Clara as a companion that this episode felt like a final straw to me

Wait, there was a swimming pool in this episode? I had to miss it between long scenes of running from the time zombies through dark corridors.
I mean, honestly that's my problem with this episode. I would expect every type of wonders inside the TARDIS, but this episode preferred to present me with identical corridors and Moffat Paradox #335, making interesting stuff just blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameos.

The old show should have used film cuts and mat paintings like you like did see in the background along with the idea of Q in Star Trek that it is more then a old building but this is all your mind right now is able to see it as. Using the story of christopher columbus and the indians for people to better understand. It is said the indians could not see the boats as it was something outside of what they could understand but as one did start to see he told the others and they did see to.

Personally I found the production design rather hit and miss. The outside sets and the black hole look great but the corridors are soo bland and fell into a similar issue that invasion of time did. The camera angles are good but if there were at least roundels then I might have been more forgiving.
I also think that those time monsters would have been much more effective if they were just something that came from within the TARDIS as it went on forever and as a result some people got lost and came across a source which converted them into whatever those things were. That adds to the mystery of the Doctor due to the stuff that he has got hidden deep within the TARDIS and caused the audience who wonder what he’s actually like when he goes deep inside the TARDIS and he’s truly alone.
I don’t think this is the worst episode ever but a dud due to wasted potential.
