I think that this is a good episode from the perspective of a child. I watched this when I was 11 and this terrified me more than weeping angels when I watched it. I couldn't sleep for days. I think that this is the ideal horror for a child because the writing feels well rooted in children's logic. Vibrant imagination is common for a child. How scary would it be to a kid if everything scary thing they ever thought of could become real? Imagine a creature so powerful it could take away your parents and leave you completely alone. That is a terrifying concept to a kid and to wrap it up in the package of creepy soulless looking dolls who giggle in the dark. That is terrifying. Also, I know some people don't like the twist of the son in the episode being an alien but I found that didn't matter to me as a child. I still related to that kid because he was desperate for comfort and protection from his own thoughts in the end which resonated for little me who was also a massive scaredy cat and frequently went to my dad to feel safe again. This episode really seems to get what it's like to be a kid when they feel terrified to the point of shaking. I feel like the older you are the first time you watch it, the more likely you are to pick holes and flaws in the plot. For a child, it doesn't matter cause a child scared of the monsters in the closet is usually unable to think logically and that's what child me fixated on in the episode. That's my theory anyways
i was 3 when this came out, and was a big doctor who fan, so i watched it. my parents were happy to allow me to watch it as i wasnt afraid of the weeping angels or the vashta nerada. although the flood was a bit scary. i watched this episode and for weeks i had fears that peg dolls would grab me from the top bunk of my bed. it was so scary.
My relative actually created the costumes for the dolls. She mentioned the difficulty with up-scaling the fabric patterns so they matched the small doll forms
Back when I watched Dr Who, this was one of the scariest episodes I ever watched. Like honestly it scared the shit out of me. There’s just something about the setting, the lighting and the sound design that really got to me.
This episodes visuals were so good! They give me anxious and panicky and depression vibes. Kinda like the feeling you get when watching courage the cowardly dog, even though the doors right there you're stuck. When I was younger I was just begging that kid to get out of bed and out the door. The yellow lighting also really helped the dreary vibe. This episode still gives me the goosebumps.
I was 6 when this episode aired and only watched like half of it because it fucking terrified me, only who episode that ever caused me any fear. I didn't return to it for a while because of the middling reception but watched it recently and was pleasantly surprised. It's a pretty solid episode imo.
When I was 6 just the next time trailer for Empty Child gave me nightmares until I was like, 12 so I know what you mean! Took me ages to eventually watch it
I didn't know this was despised! I loved it's creepy dark nature. The peg dolls were nightmare fuel. The transformation horrifying, and dehumanising. It's a 'nice' little horror episode.
I watched this episode when I was 7 and it was how my grandad described when the Daleks appeared on screen for the first time. I was scared and terrified so Moffat did a great job.
Overall I’d say Night Terrors is a solid episode by Gatiss’ standards, though I wouldn’t go as far to call it his best work. I don’t know why but in my opinion I find Empress of Mars to be my favourite Gatiss episode - but this might just be because it has Capaldi in it. Hence I am more likely to rewatch it so I may be a little biased 😉
I always found Empress of Mars to be perfectly average. It was nothing special, it was just okay. But that's fair enough! Sleep No More is my favourite Gatiss episode, so I guess I'm not the best barometer!
That is problem with the Moffat era in general. The companions all died so often that it stopped meaning anything when they did. Whilst it was fun to see Amy dying for once, as it was usually Rory, it did make you think "oh, they’ll be alright then" rather than "OMG Amy's dead! Noooo!"
Wth? People say this episode is bad? I really like this episode! Sure the twist with the kid a bit on da nose, but it terrifying, yet heartfelt. Agree: One of Gatiss' best.
Again, the stigma of Mark Gatiss episodes is something I’ve never heard before, just like a lot of the fan-based opinions i keep hearing (like that people apparently hate the Cybus Cybermen). But he’s definitely made some of the most boring and stupid episodes, but even those episodes all together are better and more enjoyable than season 11 and 12 lol.
10:46 I felt that how Ruairi acted was far more like how a person would in a circumstance like this because in a heated survival situation like being stranded, lost, or stuck many people can’t feel grief, their minds won’t allow it as the survive at all cost part of the brain kicks in. And being chased by scary China doll zombies would DEFINITELY jumpstart that part of the brain
I love this episode! I’ve always felt I was in the minority for that opinion. It’s very underrated. Moffat even originally had it and the Curse of the Black Spot swapped in the order of the season, but put them in the places they were because part 1 of series 6 was already very dark
This episode scared me so much as a kid that the next doctor who episode I watched was The Crimson Horror, and even in that episode I was so traumatised by Night Terrors that I was physically shaking for a good chunk of the episode
I remember being around 6 while watching this for the first time, and it scared the sh*t out of me. I didn't even realise people hated it coz I always loved it
The episode that scared me most when I was younger were as followed: Both parts of the Empty Child, Midnight and of course, the Lazarus experiment. With everything that can be done with science these days and the fact that it happened in modern London terrified me.
I loved this episode when i was younger, i didn't even know it was despised i thought there just wasn't much to say about it. Defenitely one of the most memorable doctor who episodes, i watched it so many times.
i only watched this episode once and that was when it originally came out, one of the few Doctor Who episodes that still terrifies me just as much as it did when i was younger. The 2 things that always scare me, China dolls and children singing, basically this episode was a big bag of nope. These things scare me more than the Weeping Angels XD
I was nine when this episode was first released and I couldn’t sleep for like a month after watching it. This was also around the time when I decided to get rid of a bunch of dolls my mum used to buy me. It was so scary and to this day I’m still scared of dolls
@@winniexox6598 XD Same, my Dad goofed around with me, but my Mum told me it was creepy and to stop it, and my brother told me to shut up but he looked freaked out XD Fun fact, I once got slapped in the face because I scared a girl wearing a Weeping Angel mask, she deserved the scare though XD
I personally think this episode is great and probably one of Gatisis top 5 stories. I remember getting nightmares from this episode as a kid cause of the peg dolls which is probably part of the reason I like it now.
Mark Gatiss realy loves horror. he wrote zombies, creature that eat faces, crazy old lady that makes you red,and creppy dolls. i loved him and i missed him.
Flesh and Stone and this episode terrified my brother and me. We had nightmares despite my brother being a teen and me close to it, when these episodes aired.
Night Terrors is the only episode in New Who ever I didn't want to watch. I saw it once and never wanted to see it again. Although that was when I was a screaming kid but the episode haunted my childhood lol
The idea of Rory not showing any emotion after Amy's "death" is a product of villains that are OP. The idea that one touch turns you into them doesn't give you the luxury of time to show emotions other than "well i need to live." Yes, he could have maybe broken down into tears as he was running but away, but that's about as much as you can get out of him, without having him just give up and become one of them.
gotta be honest I watched this episode 5 years ago and I even had a nightmare with the dolls a couple years ago. This episode is great and still gives me the creeps.
Honestly the peg dolls terrified me but the empty child didn't...or at least not as much...kudos to doctor who for giving me nightmares....multiple nightmares...over multiple years...
I've always quite enjoyed this episode. I'm a big fan of horror,so the villains were very appealing to me. Also, Matt Smith is MY Doctor. But I'm an American, and I think that's the case with most of us who are big on Dr Who.
honestly all I really remember from seeing this episode is really disliking the child , not sure if it was just because of the child actor, or how creepy and parasitic it is for him to be some kind of alien trying to latch on to human parents, or just how he was constancy scared of literally everything and whiny despite causing all the horror and having the power to stop it...( I know from the context of the episode why he was acting like that but it was still irritating to watch haha..) other than that I agree with all the points in your video, great stuff!
Matt has good chemistry with the dad, and I love the moment where he brings the toys to life so that the kid doesn’t hear his dad and the landlord. But the kid actor sucks. Amy and Rory had fuck all to do.
Honestly my biggest issue with the episode was actually the placement, it felt so weird they weren't slightly more concerned with River being their _daughter._ Now that I know it was suppose to air earlier, its a perfectly good episode.
Ngl this is one of my top episodes. I love it. I watched it when I was 15, now 19 & I was horrified and little scares me at this point cause I was raised on horror cinematics, but this one did it for me. I believe the horror episodes were the best episodes of doctor who like midnight, blink, night terrors, (the library episode with who turned out the lights). They all gave me truly doctor who vibes. Of course it’s a science fiction show and fantasy is going to be a part of it and there are some fantasy episodes that I love. I watched this as a kid of about 10, it scared me shitless. I am talking consistent nightmares for weeks. Only 3 Doctor who monster s have done that to me, the candyman from 7 and the autons in rose (which I was 4 when I watched). Regardless I still really liked it. I honestly didn’t know it had a stigma
This episode gave my nightmares. Because no one really talks about this episode I thought it didn't exist and that my dumb child mind just made this up. Kinda happy now I know this was a thing.
If you think this story is a "children as a scary threat" story with an alien child subverting the free will of a human... you haven't read Torchwood: Consequences. This "novel" is actually 5 novellas tied together, and one of them involves an alien baby. The race had apparently evolved so that were a child abandoned it could latch on to the nearest lifeform capable of taking care of its needs--no matter whether the lifeform wanted to or not. The scariest part is when the alien lets go of the human it had...captured...and latched onto Gwen, the previous "caretaker" begins screaming about what it was like to be compelled to meet the baby's needs no matter what she felt or wanted. Screaming inside while buying a cartload of baby food. It was scary enough to read, and I would have liked to see it brought to screen in an episode (and I'm sure all parents who got no sleep during the first months of their child's life could relate!)
In my opinion, The Unquiet Dead, The Idiot's Lantern and The Crimson Horror are the only average episodes Mark Gatiss has written for Doctor Who. All the others are above average to great.

I actually love this episode, but at the time it scared me enough to stop watching for a while
That's why I didn't watch it when it came out! I knew it'd give me nightmares aha!
For the past seven years, I have had a habit of tucking the end of my bedding underneath my feet, because as I child I was so scared of these things
I’m 15 now so I was about six when this came out I started crying when Amy got turned 😂

This was the first Doctor Who episode I ever watched.

I like it but it’s creepy Specially when in the episode a peg doll shadow runs down a corridor behind Amy and Rory
The thing I like about this episode is that it is a nice SIMPLE episode in the middle of Series 6 which as you know had the complex story arc.
I was 6 when this episode aired and only watched like half of it because it fucking terrified me, only who episode that ever caused me any fear. I didn't return to it for a while because of the middling reception but watched it recently and was pleasantly surprised. It's a pretty solid episode imo.

I love the house call from the doctor vibe. Of course, in general I really like the small stories that don’t impact the globe, but ordinary lives.
I love Night Terrors , the end made me almost cry where he saves his sons life and Loves him despite him being very very different.
I watched this episode when I was 7 and it was how my grandad described when the Daleks appeared on screen for the first time. I was scared and terrified so Moffat did a great job.

I'm glad you agree!
Night Terrors is what Fear Her wants to be.

People hate this episode? I love it! Okay, maybe if the direction wasn't as great I wouldn't like it as much.
Everytime you say a certain episode is the most hated, its always one I really like 😳 aha
literally made me terrified of dolls for a long while.
What the hell us going on with humanity, they hate Alle the episodes I love 😂
i was never rlly scared of the peg dolls but the empty child destroyed me for like 3 months
In my opinion, The Unquiet Dead, The Idiot's Lantern and The Crimson Horror are the only average episodes Mark Gatiss has written for Doctor Who. All the others are above average to great.
I probably shouldn’t be watching this at 2:30 am
