Playing The FERRARI GAME!? Buying, Allocations and Collecting

- Let's talk about the 'game' of buying and collecting Ferrari cars! My garage now features three; the 296 GTS alongside Purosangue and SF90 Stradale, but with more on the way let's talk about what it means to be a Ferrari collector and especially around allocations for limited models.
With both my Purosangue and 296 GTS arriving in quick succession, and having recently taking the Puro down to Italy and Monaco, as a result the 296 has seen very little mileage up to this point - in fact it is yet to be fully run in and ready for action. This is both of the timing, my recent travels, and the fact it actually arrived significantly earlier than expected.
After being exceptionally fortunate to secure an allocation for the Ferrari SF90 XX Stradale, I've seen lots of comments suggesting that the likes of the 296 GTS and Purosangue are cars only bought for no other reason, so what better than to take the 296 out for a run to give my thoughts. When it comes to luxury goods like Rolex or Hermes, or any car brand like Porsche or McLaren, there's always a 'chicken or egg' situation where special cars will be allocated to those loyal customers who have bought many of their products, and been close to the company.
It is almost certain that I will sell my SF90 when the XX is here, but continue the 296 GTS, Purosangue and inbound Roma Spider alongside others that may well arrive in future. In my opinion, Ferrari are absolutely on point at the moment with their model portfolio, and it's unbelievable to have the opportunity to buy and enjoy these cars, which if it brings the chance to then experience the likes of the SF90 XX, it's literally a dream come true.

I’ve been watching since the 12C (I was in middle school and now have a wife, 2 kids, and 2 dogs) and to watch you and your channel grow over the years and not see your character change is incredible. To watch you go from keeping a couple of cars in your apartment’s garage to a full blown showroom full of some of the best cars available today and then stay as humble and as transparent as you have is an amazing thing. Please don’t stop sharing these crazy experiences of yours!

Of course I really hope a beautiful yellow F50 is a future shmeemobile but there are some other Ferraris I’d like to see him buy as well like a 430, 458 and 812 gts as well as something a little more classic. Hopefully those are the kind of things he is alluding to rather than just the new stuff down the line.

Cars like the LaF and its replacement are the ultimate big boy Ferrari's which are offered exclusively to the top tier of their VIP customers. Unfortunately for Tim there's no way he's on that list.
Can’t see how he could possibly reach the higher end of the higher end of Tier 1 clientele.
And if he can’t find money for a 2.5 mill Euro Aurora, how could he possibly find 4 million euros for a yellowF50?
I’ve been watching this channel since the beginning and I can honestly say that this channel and the journeys you’ve put together have really opened my eyes to the possibilities and opportunities of this crazy car culture I love so much. Porsches don’t hold their value like Ferraris, they are great cars but do not hold the car prestige quite like Ferraris!!

I love how you can go on and on about this hobby so eloquently. I share the same thoughts you had on the different brands. The Ferrari experience is just a little more direct with the brand. You get on the hamster wheel and you will be offered the new models. With Porsche and others, not really. I'm sad about Porsche especially because they make such great cars and have many interesting limited production models but good luck getting an allocation. Thank you Tim for explaining in detail. I was one the ones that asked the question about having to play the game in the purosangue spec reveal video. It’s now much clearer and makes a lot more sense.

My friend bought a 458 from the same dealer and he said the service was that good he upgraded to a 488 and now has a F8 tributo and is always getting invites to events and he won’t buy anything else other than Ferrari now

I agree! Definitely do it because you love it! I love how you have such a variety of cars. A lot of people may say why buy certain this or that because you have the step above it but it’s all the different experiences and sometimes a look just calls out to you and it’s nice to just look at the beauty of the lines in your garage. You have so many vehicles I would call a dream car maybe not everyone’s typical pick but you have amazing vehicles.
It's amazing that you're in the position you are with Ferrari but I can't believe how quickly you've got there! There are people who have been buying new Ferrari's, own classic Ferrari for over 20 years that still don't get 'chosen' for the limited cars.

Also thank you for explaining the game a bit, and thank you for pointing out that it is just not Ferrari. What I like about Ferrari is that when we are offered VS cars, we are not asked to pay a dealer markup, unlike Porsche.

Tim….Im too old to try to copy what you do and now it is impossible to catch up but I do admire your honesty and ability to explain just how to obtain and enjoy these cars. I have had a lifetime of cars and started out experiencing Pre War stuff when it was old and tired junk…not by owning it but being surrounded by the cars of my Dad’s friends. I have seen the entire World of motoring change and now we have new challenges and cars beyond the imagination of anybody even thirty years ago. That you can experience so many super cars that few will ever ride in let alone drive, is remarkable but I fear your motoring future is going to be a tangled picture…I don’t know where it is going.
Now for me…I can buy a Porsche but my wife’s mobility means only a Macan or Cayenne will work. I can buy a Roma…but she cannot get in one so that kills Ferrari and no, a Purosangue is just impossible to buy! There are loads of cars but age and growing infirmity of family and oneself means….you cannot buy what you WANT but what life lets you have. So Tim…keep buying these dream bars, keep sharing them with us and I’ll go away and configure a GTS with air suspension and comfort seats…..that’s not too bad I think!! 😃😃😃😃😅

Interesting how this has changed so much in so little time. Go back to the Speciale and they were discounting them from retail just to shift the things. Even rolex back then, you could walk into any boutique and buy a steel Daytona. But now, completely different world. Highly likely to come back full circle though

From my perspective though, I wish you'd keep the SF90 and sell the GTS. Ever since you first owned it, the SF90 Stradale just seemed to be **THE PERFECT** car (cept for storage space 😂).
First, I love Tim. Truly one of the best TH-camrs on the platform and what you have done is insane. So much respect. My only negative about the Shmee collection is there are just so many. I love every one of those cars and what you've done is awesome, it can be crappy though if they alot of them sit for long periods and dont get used properly. I look at him and Hoovie, who I both love and their taste is awesome - it just sucks because so many just sit for long periods of time and dont get to run and drive properly. However, I know Shmee appreciates and probably everything gets driven way more than most of these hypercar collectors, so thats why its still awesome.

My favourite current Fezza. Love small cars for UK roads and this is certainly a looker.
The other high level brands could and should learn a lot from this type of experience. Ferrari clearly do it better, less backhanded deals behind the scenes and a nicer, clearer ‘game’ so to speak. The customer needs to know where they’re heading, not ignored. Great video and a good insight into Porsche and McLaren too.
Love this video! Honest and almost raw love it. I get the brand allocation thing but what about the mere mortal who maybe wins the lottery and can only ever buy one dream car to keep forever, that person can now not buy the ultimate dream car due to the brand embargo.
That’s life. If everyone who just got a bag of money could buy the most sought after car, then it would lose a lot of their allure. Part of what makes the La Ferrari special is the production number. And if you had been a long time client who aside from buying cars, has been racing the Challenge, done the Tributes, the Classishe, Pilota and so on was told “no car for you” because some random guy had won the lottery, would you think that was okay?
One thing you need to remember is this. Ferrari is well aware that when they allocate the new F250 to someone, they don’t just give people the chance to spend 2.5 million Euros. They know that they give people a car that in a very short period of time will be worth way more than they paid. See this is part of that reward. Tim may in part have purchased that Roma Spider as part of developing his relationship with Ferrari, but the value of that XX will easily cover what depreciation there might be on his regular SF90 and the depreciation of the Roma.
This reward should not be given to newcomers.
Besides, if someone gets into their first Ferrari from a lottery win, you can be very sure that they would find it mush more enjoyable to start with an F8, SF90, or 296 than an XX, F250 or even a Pista. They should get a car they can use and enjoy. An F250 might be amazing, but I doubt it will be easy to live with. God knows my F40 and Enzo are not cars just want to spend a lot of time in.
Ferrari did awesome job with the suv. Lamborghini was supposed to be the outrageous brand. But Ferrari put a V12 in a crossover! And im not crazy for Ferrari. But as you said. They've been nailing it.
Tim this was a great informative video . I love the way you took time to explain the Ferrari relationship , sorry for how Porsche ghosted you and McLaren kinda made you feel the way you did . When I look at collections like David Lee I think being a Ferrari collector is a cool thing they have great stories on all their cars and hey it’s an exclusive brand most people in the world will never get to buy . You’re a loyal Ferrari customer so you’ve earned the right to be offered a special version. Ferrari we different in that many dealerships are privately owned in UK so there is a familiarity with the team and a sense they treat you like family. Even me who has only bought two pre-owned cars; I still feel like a valued customer who they keep in touch with.

Thank you for finally mentioning the less responsive engine. So fed up with reviews not mentioning this. This is why I kept my F8 Spider. It has much more of a similar explosive throttle response to the SF90. I also can’t get over the lack of feedback through the steering wheel. Yes the steering is fast and light, but nothing comes back through the steering wheel. The SF90 and F8 is what does it for me.
You can tune your sf90
And it will be much more responsive 😅

I sold my sf90 for similar reasons. But kept my 812. I couldn’t get an allocation on a Pursange despite owning an SF90 spider and an 812

Tim clearly doesn't flip or garage queen his cars, and if he is buying all these ferrari to get a limited one... its his money, his passion. We get to share his passion, he just pays for it ha ha! To me I think everything you said with the chicken and egg concept was truly spot on, and to be frank Everyone has different tastes and to be honest I would take that 296 GTS over the sf and people will think I’m crazy for saying that but I just LOVE the lines and that rosso Dino orange spec with the grey leather and that blacked out rear bonnet and powered back window that has the vintage look to it from the rear are just so freakin sexy to me that if I had to pick that would be my Ferrari. And yes it’s slower and significantly less expensive than the sf90 but idc and I think you kind of hinted towards that concept that it’s about the brand and cherishing it and also personalizing the hell out of the spec if you have the opportunity to and make it unique and your own. I think your gts is just sexy man! Lol I’m in love with that car.

I don't understand why people complain about how these car manufacturers choose the customers for selling their limited cars to... Of course they will offer their limited cars to the loyal and wealthy clients and from what Tim explained, the system Ferrari has, seems quite fair. Anyway, congratulations to the allocation for the SF90XX and your beautiful car line up. To be honest, i was never a big Ferrari fan, but they grow on me, first they look amazing and the history of Ferrari is quite impressive as well. For me your Ferrari line up makes sense, since you have 3 completely different engines in your Ferraris, so just from this, the experience is already so much different. I hope you'll be able to keep this line up for a long time and add the Roma and SF90XX to it instead having one replaced.
Sensuous design Tim, looks like a thrill to drive! Yes, terrible switchgear that will wear and glitch over time. Sorry, leave the 6 for the Alfa’s and Masers, run-of-the-mill applications, especially for this money.
