Raiden can cut through other cyborgs like butter, but not so much with the Winds of Destruction, which leads me to believe that they have superior armor to their counterparts, being so high in rank.
the transition at 3:48 is so perfectly timed with the noises of his swords connecting and then when he says "I'll split you in two!" it immediately goes into the chorus, i've seen instances where its less perfect and honestly i want an mix of the song with this transition added.

I just realized sundowner's explosive shield is an actual legit military hardware. it's called a explosive reactive armor, it's put on tank to protect them from other anti tank munition. the explosion from the armor would lower the penetrative power of anti tank rounds that usually pierced tank armor and kill the crew inside.
And before anyone comes here and asks why Russia is still losing tanks, it's because the armour at the top of a tank is the thinnest and least protected, which is where a missile likes to hit the target. Kind of like how most MGR players just flank sundowner in his back.

Even forgetting his sheer charm and charisma, ya know what makes Sundowner such an awesome character? He is simple. In this game filled with deep, complex, and tragic characters and themes intertwined with kick-ass music and combat, he stands out with his pure simplicity. He doesn't need a reason to fight. He doesn't have some sort of overwhelming sense of depression, or a need to fight for a cause. He doesn't need revenge to fight. He doesn't use fighting as a means to an end. To him, all the corporate material build-up of gathering money and child brains was the means. Fighting was the end. And that is poetic, at least to me.

Recently got MGR, beat this guy 4 times, and not once did I slice all of his shields off before whittling his health to zero. Apparently I've been missing out, he actually looks like a lot more fun without them.
@@habibishapur This was my first Metal Gear game, and I missed that certain details (often important ones) are stashed in the pause menus and deeper tutorials. Didn't expect they wouldn't tell me about critical game mechanics if I skipped over what seemed like optional content. Or maybe they did tell me mid-story that I can aim slashes and I just missed it. Whatever the case, whenever I went into blade mode I just mashed the appropriate face button. That worked until Sundowner, where taking an explosion to the face any time I tried to slap his armor made me think I was supposed to do something else. Fortunately death by a thousand cuts did the trick.

They should've made him truly invincible before destroying his shields or given him, like 150hp. He's just too easy when you understand what to do, especially compared to Monsoon.
3 tips for improving this boss. First, make his health larger because you can hit him so many times without him dodging. Second, make the shields required to be broken off so that he's taking (A LOT) less damage. That way you actually get to see him in phase 2 rather than just sitting there cheesing him, also, his shields get deployed in the cutting formation too much. You can slice all his shields in about 20 seconds. Third, make him move more in his second phase, he stays still for too long using 0 moves and it just gets boring or give him hyper-armour when he uses a move so that you can't hit him while he's doing a move.
I totally agree with you. I think they could have done a lot better with the music at the end. I also think they should not have given him a checkpoint when he enters his second phase
actually I think he should be invincible in his first stage yes but you have to doge his attacks or else they do chip damage and the light poles do like 30% even if you block and give you less time to anticipate the attack like the animation for it is half as long
He might be arguably the game's easiest boss, but fuck me is that background music not just the most epic thing since tossing around Metal Gear Ray like a cocktail stick.
Nah Mistral can always be tricky because of her army of lil baby geckos, Wolf is probably easier than Sundowner but only just barely because of the explosive shield. That said once you get it off his fight is laughably easy and ends in like 10 seconds once you've upgraded your sword. So it's probably Wolf then Sundowner then Mistral.
imagine if they did this: Have the rain suddenly stop for the fight (like in MSG2), and a big red sun appears in the background, and the scene is given a red filter. Or maybe the sun could shine in the rain?
That would have been awesome but sundowner would have to be a little tougher for it to work. I think he's just a little too easy and needs to get more health and combos
I'm disappointed they didn't make Sundowner block your slashes with his shields while he has them. He is a cyborg after all, and we've seen cyborg bodies do some pretty complex things without the human half interceding, so why shouldn't his body be able to automatically move one of his armor plates to block any strikes you make? It's not as if they're too slow for that either, when he tries to slam you with them they move pretty quick. Not mention that the only time you get the opportunity to slice off his armor panels off to begin with is either when he's forming a wall with them or trying to shield-bash you; if he blocked more with his shields when not doing that it wouldn't change the strategy, just make it impossible to cheese his fight. The developers clearly intended for you to break his shields before killing him too, given that the cutscene when he falls off the roof shows him with his visor on and panels cut off even if you didn't do it, and that his health bar is smaller than that of the other Winds to begin with. I dunno; for supposedly being more difficult than Monsoon to fight (as he's later in the game), and for having far more buildup than the previous Winds you've encountered, he just feels like such a letdown unless you limit yourself to playing the way it's supposed to be.
I just kept ninja-running around him and slicing him with every "lap". All he was doing was covering with shields or do the back-shield-smash thing, and because MC is running too fast and already is 2 meters away, its futile for Sundower. 900 slices and you can basically beat him without losing any HP. _Too fast for a naked AI_ _what_ ...I mean, eye. Yes.
I like to think he is well aware he cant compete with someone Who could best Monsoon, which is why he brings shield, goons and choppers to The battlefield. All so he can do what he loves one last time while giving their plan time to launch.
Also, something that always bothered me is he actually has significantly less health than monsoon. Because during the monsoon fight Raiden gets unlimited ripper mode, Wich makes him deal more damage, so the devs amped monsoon up to compensate.
I honestly find Monsoon way harder. Or maybe thats not the case, maybe I just find him so annoying because he spams that magnetic force thing and dodges all your attacks, and when I land the magnetic bomb I dont manage to use blade mode in time to cut him.

sonicvortex99 these bosses aren't really hard at all, what is hard is to get S rank in missions with bosses...also trying to S Rank before you finish the game and have all the items is a huuuge fucking mistake that will drive you nuts u_u' but I digress haha
Lol, I honestly thought the bosses were hard on the first playthrough. I know I'm a girl and everything, but Sundowner was super easy but I had trouble with Monsoon and Armstrong. But I quickly figured a way around Armstrong when I realized you can run from the tanks he throws...I could never get the slicing right.
I still never used free blade actually, I ran away from the tanks. Makes the fight longer but when you can't the hang of the free blade thing, it helps ^_^

I love how Sundowner talks big about being “fuckin’ invincible”, plays himself up as some warmongering badass, yet always feels the need to take cheap, even unnecessary measures in his “fights.” I mean, using the Prime Minister as a shield to get away on a train only to chain him up and kill him anyway? Sicking a Metal Gear on one guy (unsuccessfully)? Having a huge yet impractical weapon and similarly huge yet impractical shields? Calling in choppers and minions while he grabs stuff from the environment to hit you with? Being a combat pragmatist is one thing; bragging about your skills, then resorting to that kind of stuff, that's a whole different ballgame. Makes him look like a cowardly bully if you ask me. That's probably the point, though. Edit: Of course, it’s obvious that any cowardice he has is overridden by his bloodlust, and when he has to choose between killing someone brutally or running away, he’ll choose the former.
Yeah, it's honestly a shame that his character was like that considering the build-up he gets. He looked like the most savage of the Winds and has the best theme in the game imo.
It's so incredibly easy to just brute force your way through this boss and not even go to its second phase. Had this battle been designed better it wouldn't have felt so underwhelming and anti climatic, being that it's against Sundowner, a rather early established antagonist.
just played the game for the first time last week and huh i really didn't even. remember i had to cut the shield (codec slipped out of my mind entirely once the fight started to just focus on the surviving it, after coming out of monsoon i expected this to get even more skewed) and i was. really just cheesing it by forcing him out of the shields hitting him in the back because i couldn't figure out what i actually had to do. cheesed the whole fight that way until he died and i was kinda confused at what happened

Mastiff on reveangence mode will legit drop a 200 percent health bar in one attack, where armstrong still needs 2 or 3. The UGs are stupid hard and have to be fought in a certain way

Especially if you get one and suddenly the other does something cheap and unexpected causing you to restart. Eventually I got through it though and will never play the story on revengence again lol, just the bosses

The design choices for Sundowners fight seem quite well thought out by the designers to more firmly characterize Sundowner. His fundamental belief is that cruelty is inherent in human nature, and he embraces that part of himself that he perceived to the fullest extent he can. At the end of the day, though, cruelty can be characterized as the epitome of selfishness, and this kind of person is easy to have an inherent cowardice within. Sundowner uses deflector shields, lures Raiden up to rely on his helicopters, and just uses a blatant trick at the end and tries to finish Raiden off with a missile from afar. When he falls in the final blade mode sequence, you can see the fear in his eyes. Sundowner is, at heart, a coward who had to justify his own moral shortcomings with a greater ideology of natural cruelty because his ego was too inflated to be anyone else.
Well said, i do believe that writing wise this is well design and shows his character well. But this fight isn’t well designed GAMEPLAY wise. I made a whole comment about it if you wanna check it out.

I remember reading somewhere the reason be does that is because when he's angry or in combat, his Ripper persona comes out. When in a casual conversation and calm, his normal personality shows.

Nah Mistral can always be tricky because of her army of lil baby geckos, Wolf is probably easier than Sundowner but only just barely because of the explosive shield. That said once you get it off his fight is laughably easy and ends in like 10 seconds once you've upgraded your sword.
So it's probably Wolf then Sundowner then Mistral.

I'm disappointed they didn't make Sundowner block your slashes with his shields while he has them. He is a cyborg after all, and we've seen cyborg bodies do some pretty complex things without the human half interceding, so why shouldn't his body be able to automatically move one of his armor plates to block any strikes you make? It's not as if they're too slow for that either, when he tries to slam you with them they move pretty quick. Not mention that the only time you get the opportunity to slice off his armor panels off to begin with is either when he's forming a wall with them or trying to shield-bash you; if he blocked more with his shields when not doing that it wouldn't change the strategy, just make it impossible to cheese his fight.
The developers clearly intended for you to break his shields before killing him too, given that the cutscene when he falls off the roof shows him with his visor on and panels cut off even if you didn't do it, and that his health bar is smaller than that of the other Winds to begin with. I dunno; for supposedly being more difficult than Monsoon to fight (as he's later in the game), and for having far more buildup than the previous Winds you've encountered, he just feels like such a letdown unless you limit yourself to playing the way it's supposed to be.
And on the other end, monsoon, despite having literally zero buildup, was one of the most challenging and fun bosses in the game imo.
I just kept ninja-running around him and slicing him with every "lap".
All he was doing was covering with shields or do the back-shield-smash thing, and because MC is running too fast and already is 2 meters away, its futile for Sundower. 900 slices and you can basically beat him without losing any HP. _Too fast for a naked AI_

I like to think he is well aware he cant compete with someone Who could best Monsoon, which is why he brings shield, goons and choppers to The battlefield. All so he can do what he loves one last time while giving their plan time to launch.
Also, something that always bothered me is he actually has significantly less health than monsoon. Because during the monsoon fight Raiden gets unlimited ripper mode, Wich makes him deal more damage, so the devs amped monsoon up to compensate.
I honestly find Monsoon way harder. Or maybe thats not the case, maybe I just find him so annoying because he spams that magnetic force thing and dodges all your attacks, and when I land the magnetic bomb I dont manage to use blade mode in time to cut him.

Lol, I honestly thought the bosses were hard on the first playthrough. I know I'm a girl and everything, but Sundowner was super easy but I had trouble with Monsoon and Armstrong. But I quickly figured a way around Armstrong when I realized you can run from the tanks he throws...I could never get the slicing right.

I still never used free blade actually, I ran away from the tanks. Makes the fight longer but when you can't the hang of the free blade thing, it helps ^_^

Step 2: Get to Sundowners fight
Step 3: Take out his shields without damaging him much
Step 4: Get to the checkpoint, quit to title and use a sword that has the least upgrades

I love how Sundowner talks big about being “fuckin’ invincible”, plays himself up as some warmongering badass, yet always feels the need to take cheap, even unnecessary measures in his “fights.” I mean, using the Prime Minister as a shield to get away on a train only to chain him up and kill him anyway? Sicking a Metal Gear on one guy (unsuccessfully)? Having a huge yet impractical weapon and similarly huge yet impractical shields? Calling in choppers and minions while he grabs stuff from the environment to hit you with? Being a combat pragmatist is one thing; bragging about your skills, then resorting to that kind of stuff, that's a whole different ballgame. Makes him look like a cowardly bully if you ask me. That's probably the point, though.
Edit: Of course, it’s obvious that any cowardice he has is overridden by his bloodlust, and when he has to choose between killing someone brutally or running away, he’ll choose the former.
Yeah, it's honestly a shame that his character was like that considering the build-up he gets. He looked like the most savage of the Winds and has the best theme in the game imo.

It's so incredibly easy to just brute force your way through this boss and not even go to its second phase. Had this battle been designed better it wouldn't have felt so underwhelming and anti climatic, being that it's against Sundowner, a rather early established antagonist.

just played the game for the first time last week and huh i really didn't even. remember i had to cut the shield (codec slipped out of my mind entirely once the fight started to just focus on the surviving it, after coming out of monsoon i expected this to get even more skewed) and i was. really just cheesing it by forcing him out of the shields hitting him in the back because i couldn't figure out what i actually had to do. cheesed the whole fight that way until he died and i was kinda confused at what happened

In my opinion Mistral is the easiest, she has no anti-Spam defense from what I remember
The design choices for Sundowners fight seem quite well thought out by the designers to more firmly characterize Sundowner. His fundamental belief is that cruelty is inherent in human nature, and he embraces that part of himself that he perceived to the fullest extent he can. At the end of the day, though, cruelty can be characterized as the epitome of selfishness, and this kind of person is easy to have an inherent cowardice within. Sundowner uses deflector shields, lures Raiden up to rely on his helicopters, and just uses a blatant trick at the end and tries to finish Raiden off with a missile from afar. When he falls in the final blade mode sequence, you can see the fear in his eyes. Sundowner is, at heart, a coward who had to justify his own moral shortcomings with a greater ideology of natural cruelty because his ego was too inflated to be anyone else.
Well said, i do believe that writing wise this is well design and shows his character well. But this fight isn’t well designed GAMEPLAY wise. I made a whole comment about it if you wanna check it out.
