I'm 59 and I "re-started" playing the guitar this year, after a 45 year hiatus. I've been sucking up TH-cam videos, your channel (which I love), other channels. I've learned "tablature", strums, chords, riffs, etc. I've got bloody finger tips, four guitars, now, and I'm doing what I should have done 50 years ago. Thanks, Lauren. You inspire me.

Do yourself and your fingers a favor; buy a set of Ernie Ball "Zippy Slinky" strings.
They're the lightest strings you can get, and they don't sound any different than the heavier ones... they're just easier to frett.
I've got them on my Telecaster and they make a world of difference.

can relate...when the other big C came to town and lockdown happened..I ordered up a Telecaster and Stratocaster and DAW equipment .. I Winged it freestyle..was nice I progressed and happy..10 days ago Tripped or hit by an Algorithm.. and Lauren Popped up..I watched a few videos...the academia appealed to me...10 days in... nice progression...easy on eyes and ears and she show shortcuts...her acoustic lessons have amped up my electric guitar skills...I would recommend her to anyone wanting give a six string a go....she's dedicated and very caring..

LOL I've been "auditing" beginner lessons from every single online guitar instructor Lauren named, so that was an it's-a-small-world moment. She's absolutely right that her experiences set her apart as an instructor. I find that if all of them are teaching a song/chord/technique, she's usually the first one who explains it in a language that makes sense. I get the feeling that's a result of having to struggle through these things on her own.
Having said that, I think modesty prevents her from either seeing or claiming her greatest strength, which is just a natural talent for teaching. I've had to dive deep to find out how to play some obscure punk songs, and learn from a mumbly, goes-way-too-fast dude sitting on his bed (and I'm grateful to them for it), so I appreciate _good_ teaching, and I have to say, Lauren is one of the (if not the) best at keeping the learning experience from feeling frustrating, making it fun, even when it's hard. That's not just experience. That's a gift, and she has it. Anyway, hats off to Lauren. Also, she has the best tee shirts.

You are so easy to listen to and learn from. I'm one of those late bloomers, took lessons at 58 years of age. I have always been into music, singing and listening. I even wrote songs before learning guitar because life got in the way. Lol I took disability and moved my mom in with me at 57 years of age. Taking lessons was a lifetime dream and it helped keep me sane. Lol love your attention to detail and understanding us old folks. I'm 67 now and still love learning. Thanks.

Lauren, thanks for taking us through your guitar journey. During COVID, two years ago, I started playing taking lessons from Justin and Andy at age 65. I have enjoyed their instruction. Last January, I decide it was time to take in person lessons. I explained to the instructor that I wasn’t interested in Music Theory, I knew how to read tab and just wanted to learn to play more songs and correct any bad habits. After 3 months I quit as the Instructor was trying to teach me theory. On a whim, I was looking for instruction to play Heart of Gold and came across your you Tube instruction. Out of curiosity, I inquired about the 7 step class and decided to give it a go even if I had to take a step back. I have been able to move through it fairly quickly as I was proficient at some of the basics. What I have enjoyed is your structure, detail, and realistic expectations. After the bad experience with the in person instructor, you methods are a breath of fresh air! Thank you!

Love your journey. I'm a ukulele guy. The pearl for all and in any vocation of avocation...centers on enjoying what u do. That means play and practice your style ...for me it is 50s rock but some 90s when I was a teenager...and times were much calmer...but I digress...enjoying your genre will translate into fulfillment, better play and the desire to get your instrument out...and we all make many mistakes...just rock on anyways!

Lauren, I am so happy to hear you say so much of this. My friends said it would be so cool if I learned guitar. I got an acoustic guitar when I was 14 and my first teacher wasn't sophisticated, but he had me playing things I liked immediately. If not, I never would have stuck with it. I found teachers who went beyond my first teacher and I got to the point where people said, "That guy is really good." At various times, including now, I taught guitar lessons. I played every chance I got whether it was folk, rock blues, jazz or choral accompaniment. Honestly, classical guitar was not for me, but I learned valuable lessons from it.

Hi Lauren, I signed up for your 7-level course some months ago. One of many plusses of your course is that you break things down and actually show us what you are doing so that we aren’t left wondering… ‘wait...how did she do that? I am making progress, slowly, which I keep hearing is the way it must be. I am old, can’t play standing up, and most definitely can’t sing (just ask anyone in my family). I like the songs that are instrumental. I appreciate slower-paced songs. My goal is to learn the Chet Atkins arrangement of the Don McLean song, Vincent. Meanwhile, the guitar has become my go-to when I need to ‘relax, but stay sharp,’ a necessary skill for an old geezer.

Lauren I have wondered about your story. I am really glad I found you. I am familiar with the TH-cam teachers you mentioned, but IMO you are by far the easiest to understand. I found you a year ago in June and can’t believe how far I’ve come…kind of stalled out on the lesson plan… I found I really like finger picking, especially the Travis picking and have spent a lot of time there. Recently, started practicing in smaller chunks on the basics. (Something you suggested in one of your videos based on time allotments). Thanks Jim

I got to accept my lifelong dream of playing guitar not going to happen. If I could learn just one song it might inspire me before I put my guitar in the bin. It learning a beautiful song on an instament the gives u the motivation to kerp going. Ive bought so many books and it not teaching that.

Lauren - your piano lesson experience sounds exactly like mine. Chords were something I had to learn for the yearly guild auditions, but nobody taught me how to actually use them to make music. Flash forward 40 years to my first guitar lesson. I was fully expecting Teacher to hand me the Guitar Etudes 1 book and start on page 1. Instead, he asked me, "Well, what do you want to play?" Mic drop. I came back the next week with a CD of Brown Eyed Girl. Teacher tabbed out the intro, showed me the chords, and I was on my way. Like you, if they had showed me how to have FUN on a piano, I probably would have stayed with it. So glad they didn't!

Luv ya. You are an inspiration to many and a great teacher. Thank you.
I wanted to learn to play the guitar in the 70's but it wasn't until I purchased an acoustic guitar in 2003 in attempt to fulfill my dream of becoming a guitarist. I gave up my dream in the same year, it was difficult learning from the studio teachers. But OMG, I stumbled on your TH-cam channel and learned more in a few days than I did in months with other teachers. I am now 65 and you have shown me how much fun and how easy it is to play the guitar. So I am starting this journey with you, my mentor that looks like a 26 year old college grad. I had that 20 year old guitar serviced the other day. I am having fun now playing the guitar, thanks to you Lauren.

I tried to learn to play about 15 years ago then put it off because I divorced and moved to another state to start over. My sweet (new) husband gifted me with a guitar this past January and then gifted me with another beautiful one for our 13 year anniversary this past weekend. My experience was similar to yours. Piano teacher that would only focus on classical. I inherited my grandpas guitar when I was 17 and taught myself cords from books and sheet music. I'm nearly 60 now and only took a 1 semester class in college for beginner guitarists. I've played on and off and really started practicing when covid hit. Learning lots from you tube and ultimate guitar, paul davids, rick beato and the other teachers you mentioned also. So much help out there these days. For me the point is to have fun, so I 100% agree with you. Keep it up.

I love the approach you use to teach guitar! I actually started playing 20 years ago. I learned by the book and how to read music. I never really forced myself to learn more than the same old camp fire strumming. I’m still very mediocre and so I’m here, back to square one. I want to expand my guitar playing and currently really want to learn fingerpicking. So far, it sucks! Ha! But I want it so bad! So anyway, just want to thank you for the great tips and tricks. AND I just turned 40 too!! Cheers to rocking into the 40s! 🤘🏻

You and Angela Petrilli are by some stretch, the best guitar demonstators on YT. Very few others I've found thus far really nail the crucial subtleties and nuances in even the most deceptively simple-sounding tunes. As a self-taught player for nigh on 30 years and currently dealing with onset osteoarthritis in my critical barring index finger following a particularly gnarly left wrist fracture about 5 years ago, your vids and unfailing ebullience have been invaluable in keeping me committed, discarding old bad technique habits and even finding and refining new ways around, despite that at times, compromising fact.

You share concepts hard to grasp in a relatable way. I've gotten over months long humps via you (and JS) and am glad you're there. I'm retired at 68 and can't put $$$ into lessons like I'd like to. This video is so helpful. It’s been interesting hearing your guitar journey. You are very right about learning the songs you like listening to, it really keeps a person interested. I gave up with one to one lessons, because they are not only too expensive but they teach what they want to teach. Also strumming patterns as a beginner has been very difficult. So for the time being since I have only just discovered your channel I am going to try some of the finger picking patterns you are teaching. Many thanks for all of your lessons 🤟

Just got your Email "had a full day with your Dad" which linked me here, glad you had a good day and yes, that is a cool Camaro, GM just started the Camaro invasion into Australia, so far looks cool but the new ones never as good as the classic muscle cars. Now, for this video, great story and sounds like your happy about how you got where you are. I also had period where Melissa Etheridge invaded my music collection, back when tapes were the rage. Keep it up, and I am still working on 'While my guitar gently weeps', to much new stuff going on in my shed, but I will get there eventually. 💕

What a great story Lauren. I started playing Trumpet in 4th grade and was asked to play with the 5th-8th grade band as a 5th grader so I had a solid base for music. I always wanted to play guitar and started self taught lessons numerous times. It wasn't until I took lessons that things started to click. 3 years in I am loving learning, what I don't know about guitar. Thank you for sharing your story because it resonates in myself, getting to the level I really want to play at. I'm very close to playing on stage with friends and playing songs I enjoy and like. I almost pulled the plug last April to join a guitar player on stage in Key West and play along with him. Next year..... next trip to Key West I hope to be playing onstage. :)

Greetings , Lauren . I first picked up a guitar in 1983 , it's a ,Kapok Classical / Flamenco Guitar . It is still a firm friend to this day . My second , was a Strat Fender copy with a finger action so high , it was probably easier to stand on the neck ( Even with its adjustable bridge ) . Then came an Ibanez lead and an accompanying Bass . Sadly , they all sat playing home to spiders for many years . Then , I came across your channel which inspired me to pick them up again . Still a little rusty due to Arthritis and a recent injury . But many thanks for helping me evict those spiders and setting me on the road again .

Very interesting, thank you! I learned classical guitar with 13 years. Pure sight reading. No chords. I lost interest because I wanted actually to play Beatles songs, but that was it. With 40 years I took piano lessons. Classic. No chords. Then I got a new teacher and I requested him to teach me only the great stuff (far too difficult for me like Beethoven Sonatas). But he taught me how to analyze music sheets. He took apart all the classical pieces and showed me the chords in Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Paul Simon, etc. Chords I, IV, V, etc. It helps me until now to understand music. Now I am learning pop guitar again, on TH-cam, with on-line course (not yours, I am sorry but I like very much your work and frequently I look in to learn this and that). In short I think music theory is a great plus when studying guitar but I acknowledge that some of the best songwriters never knew anything about theory.

Oh gods! I had a piano teacher like that - back in 1970! Nothing but practice scales and no hint of theory. It was 10 years later after a lot of strumming that I sat back down at a piano and worked out what I was playing - and then 40 years later I started playing more regularly and seriously (and learning more theory) and now I’m playing more blues and jazz - and having a blast!
