You are never too old to learn. I started at 63. never played an instrument in my life but am always surprising myself with what I achieve. Played a little charity gig in November, lots of my ex-students in the audience ... and it was amazing. Follow Lauren, give it a go and ENJOY.
I have been a Platinum member with Lauren for 3 years now. Her courses and private guitar community I credit with keeping me consistently engaged in learning the guitar. For decades, i would play for a couple of months, then get bored and store the guitar for years, then repeat the cycle. Since joining Lauren, i have been playing consistently and actually learned to finger pick something i thought i would never have the coordination to do. I highly recommend Lauren's program. Strum on ! 🙂🎶
😊 I'm guilty of the same thing, I play for a few months get bored and put it away for a year. Been trying to teach myself going on 20+ years without progressing. I really find Lauren's lessons the best - no hype no fuss, a pleasant tone and easy to follow information 👍
I love Lauren's lessons because she is an actual scientist. Her lessons are built on tried and proven practices that consistently produce results so long as the recipient of those lessons keep their expectations aligned with the expectations Lauren lays out in this video.
Thank you so much for your lessons! I’ve tried for years to learn guitar and always got frustrated and quit playing. I’m finally having fun playing and feeling like I can actually play guitar 🎸. 🎉
Love your teaching style and i certainly fit into this age group as i am 65. Started to try and learn over a year ago, given up a couple of times but keep coming back after hearing music i like and want to play. Struggling with this exercise as my fingers don't seem to stretch beyond two frets and harder i try then my hand and arm starts to cramp.
I am right in the age group you talk about. Learning new skills has always been a life long journey, but, while I am still at the start of learning guitar, I am finding it is a whole new level. I love the simplicity of how you teach. Above all, I really appreciate that you don't sell 'a solution' or technique that makes learning guitar a simple and instant experience. It isn't. Setting out a pathway with the various steps and skills along with setting achievable expectations I is crucial. Maybe a video explaining a proven pathway and journey would be helpful. Obviously some learn in different ways, but some explanation of the different steps might be useful to many.
@@LaurenBateman I really should pay more attention! 😂. Your 7 step program does everything I had worked out that I need. A structured pathway ordered from intro to basic skills. The lack of expert (or even peer) constructive feedback and guidance to give confidence is probably what many find difficult - someway or advice to fix that would be helpful. Just been hammered with some major unexpected expenses but your program is just what I need. Keep up the brilliant work.
I have been watching your video and my guitar must be bad. Yours works so much better than mine. My strings get in the way of my fingers and my pick is defective also. Tanks for making your videos
I'm going to be 80 in a month. I bought Yamaha FG830 several weeks ago, have learned to tune it and am working my way through your 9 lesson "Crash" course. I have been working the "spider" for a few days. I find it difficult, but it is too cold for me to be out riding my motorcycle...so I'll keep at it. Your TH-cam videos are very inspiring. I wish I had started guitar a little earlier, but better late than...well you know...:)
I start and finish my practice routine with all of these. I can tell you after a week there has been a great improvement not perfect but 15 minutes a day everybody will see improvement.
At 51, I am concerned that my pathways are overgrown... with weeds... and I'm sitting in the middle of the road forgetting which side I was SUPPOSED to be on. Wait-- what was I doing before I got to this part of the road? Kidding! :) Older adults absolutely can still learn. The truth is that learning guitar is can keep you sharp and mentally healthier-- and, the dexterity it provides is great! My surgeon suggested I jump back in and continue learning after I healed from surgery, said it would be great for physical therapy!
Bear with me, if you will. I'm an old guy who used to play decades ago... mostly bass professionally, played with my fingers, but I could play guitar and a few other instruments well enough to write. I think pattern changes also help exercise fingers. Down picking on the first exercise could be expanded to down and up, and vice versa. Half or whole step movement could be attained with a hammer on, or pull off, or combination. Maybe a bit more appropriate in slightly more advanced lessons, but just saying. It's about mobility and making the mind and fingers work after all. Especially for old people like me. I randomly decided to pick up the guitar again, and it's a combination of frustration with neck fingers that don't move well any more, and fumbling with the pick hand. Someone asked me about a bass line of an old song we played (which got me to take instruments out of their cases), and I could do it without missing a beat (literally). Guitar, as a second instrument, has been more of a challenge. It's why I'm looking at all the great tutorials now available. Your exercise with fingers on the G string, moving each individually from high to low E is the baby step I'm noodling with as I badly play music I already (used to) know. Thanks for the exercises. I'm not getting back into the biz, but it would be nice to be able to somewhat competently play again.
It has been a few years now and I'm still enjoying your lessons and have had a lot of fun; Thank you and may you and your wife have a Merry Christmas:🎸🎼🎵🎶🎶🎵🎩
I heard a neurologist say once that building muscle memory / wiring up the connections in your brain is just a natural consequence of the repetitions that you do. You can't do all those repetitions and NOT build the neural pathways, just like you can't do pressups or squats repeatedly and NOT build muscle strength.
As a beginner do you recommend starting with an acoustic or electric guitar. It seems electric guitars are easier to learn and execute chords - takes less pressure/ effort. What do you think?
Lauren what about the solo stuff? I’ve mastered open chords now but my muscle memory to do all that solo stuff is just not happening and it’s been like over 3 years now of playing. I don’t know how people like slash are able to hit every string and move their fret fingers in the same spot that fast? It’s absolutely amazing. Maybe I’m just a rhythm player only? I’m 48 so I dunno. Can you be a great guitar player without being about to solo and play scales fast and all that? Thanks!
You can be! I have a lead guitar 101 course that might be helpful (www.laurenbateman.com/courses). I can play electric and play solos. I'm not Eddie Van Halen, but I know the fundamentals and it can be a lot of fun. But I do love being an acoustic rhythm player . ☺️
Hi Lauren. I really enjoy your videos. I’m a beginner and I was wondering if you could recommend a good beginner not so expensive electric guitar. Thank you
Might work if your memory isn't already stuffed! I'm 62yo & my memory/recall let me down. Tried to learn over covid for 2yrs (including here) & got very frustrated as couldn't even play one simple song (if they followed the same 4 chord pattern for a whole song I'd be fine lol), but I ditched it & not interested in trying any more :(
Thankyou, at least I watched this youtube vid, so there's still a glimmer of hope I guess! One day when there's more free time/much less work & other destractions who knows!
@61cheezil may I recommend Lauren's excellent videos on "horse with no name" or "for what it's worth" when you do. You'll very quickly have 2 entire songs under your fingers.
Hello, I'm Charles Nike Watching from Florida Jacksonville USA. I'm sorry if I may appear intrusive I just want to let you know I didn't know this kind of beauty 😍 still exist, What's your name and where are you watching from?
Ok, the 3rd finger is made out of wood. It just won't move. Especially towards the high E... Frustrating... I never thought it's so hard to control any of my body parts.
The time for the time 3-9 month. Sounds like right middle of that with 3 finger chord, didn't start with 2 finger as I didn't know the C G and D could be that. I've been questioning how long it takes.

i do these exercises every day before practice and it really helps me.
Yes true, I am also learned to play guitar a little bit late.
Love this lady, she has helped this 71 year old dude play better.
Aww thanks! Glad to help.

Love the humor mixed into the vids (lotr among others!), I use these spider and fingers up&down excersizes as warm-up's and it really helps!

Electrics are easier. I usually recommend whatever genre interests you most.
You're simply the best 👍 better than the all the rest 👌
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you so much 😀

Thanks lauren i was trying so hard to run away from usin the metronome but its futile im Goin to start im sure my chord changes will be faster

Forty years of playing guitar here, learn new chords etc. daily. If my playing sounds bad so what I enjoy . I am more carpton not clapton lol
You got this! Keep rockin!
Hi Lauren. I really enjoy your videos. I’m a beginner and I was wondering if you could recommend a good beginner not so expensive electric guitar. Thank you
I would recommend $300 guitar from brand like Ibanez, Epiphone, Dean, etc.
@@LaurenBateman thank you for your help and videos.
What would be the best strings for beginners? Thanks! 80 but still a beginner. Lol
I would recommend extra light strings to make the guitar easier to play.
The neighbor up stairs in my cell phone said it was PURPLE HAZE,HA😅😊🎉❤

You need to learn to let go... starting with the idea that your memory is "already stuffed".
Don't put too much pressure on yourself. You can always go back in learning to play the guitar once you feel more comfortable and ready for it :D

Oh and for something super fun - "monster mash" is mostly just 4 chords repeated over and over.
I started learning at the age of 57...im 60 now and now play open mics
