  • Possibly the most important yet misunderstood aspect of developing as a musician. Like any word in any language, patterns in music exist in 4 dimensions.

    These are great!
A disease with online guitar teachers nowadays is that they deliberately don't explain certain things, because of course for that you have to pay extra out the ass for their all-new deluxe upgraded Patreon whatever bullshit... They know that actually *teaching* their students would deprive them of their grift.
This is the exact opposite of that. And it's sorely needed, now more than ever.

I’m the Reddit user that introduced Scotty to Reddit almost a year ago.
2006 was when I bought the dvd set. I got them because I wanted to know how music worked. I found his course randomly and took the chance.
I did lessons and paid a lot and got nothing. This course was a binge watch for me and I am a VERY competent player now.
But the course isn’t magic. You still have to put in a lot of work. You just won’t be lost.

@@ORShiTTy whoever you are you've pulled me out of a really dark place. At least I hope. I'm only 2 lessons in and it's underwhelmingly easy so far probably because I've already gone through this level but I can feel like something of substance is coming real soon. Depending on the next few lessons I'll decide whether to buy the material or not because I've made the mistake of hopping on the hype with a certain grifter with over a million subs and the scariest possible hairstyle for his age. Money isn't the issue even though I'm not rich, the feeling of being lost, helpless and scammed hurts beyond measure. Please whatever music gods out there, let this be the one.

Scotty’s course is not a scam. It’s a master course in theory - like a years worth of college.
But you only get what you put into it. I learned everything from the DVds but I still supplemented concepts with other videos I found. And I spent a lot of time applying the theory knowledge to the guitar.
But I was able to understand and compose music much easier after this course.
I had a better idea of what I needed to solidify for guitar.
It took me a solid 6months to apply the theory to the guitar and I became exceptionally good before the first year was up.
It took a lot of dedication. The course won’t give you that. So dive in and keep on trucking.

This is definitely a different approach for learning the guitar. Comparing music to a language is helpful because letters and words are familiar concepts. Think, Read, Hear, and Speak keeps us on familiar turf.

I paid $300 for the dvd set back in 2006. I learned everything from this course. I loaned it to someone and they stole it. I went to buy again now that I have kids and want them to learn the theory I know. I found out the videos are free and had to post Scotty’s channel on Reddit.
I’m so elated seeing Scotty’s course get the attention it deserves!

I’ve had some ear training and theory - and I am really enjoying this overview. Never thought of the logic of tuning in fourths. I can read classical guitar music intermediate level. Here for more ‘understanding.’ I really like the presentation style. I’m teaching myself some pop songs and Bossa Nova - and I wan to learn how to improvise. What do I really need to know? I’m here to find out and I’m buying the accompanying book well worth the $20 to say thank you to Mr. Scottie!

Scotty worked in public broadcast. He did this entire course in early 2000 through public broadcast. So it was on public broadcast tv during the time he filmed.
He saved the content and developed a 32dvd course. He sold the course for years through is very infomercial looking website. That’s how I found him and the course in 2006. I’m the one who posted about him on Reddit a year ago (it’s to day in fact)
He founded/owns/operates a music school. He eventually decided to give the course away and try to profit off the handbook sales for $20.
His course he never gained much success.
So I’m so happy to see the post I made rejuvenating things.
I actually expect to hear from Scotty soon and I will update the community.

No this is great stuff, but you may not need/want music theory right now. I'd recommend a year of learning chords and a few songs before doing a deeper dive into the language of music.
