After a year a very little exclusives, Xbox has stormed out of the gate announcing the many coming in the first half of 2023 and one of them is available now. In a surprise plot twist, Tango Gameworks dropped the unlikely Hi-Fi Rush right into our laps. After playing it, I'm absolutely thrilled by what they've accomplished with this game and the message it sends to fans.

Just gotta say the game so far seems to be about 15-20 hours long it's definitely way longer than I expected, but doesn't get old at all given the enemy variety with each zone

Many people are shocked that Tango Gameworks pulled this off so effortlessly when they only made horror games before, but I'm not surprised at all. Ya'll gotta remember that Tango is made up of former CAPCOM employees, their studio has the DNA of not just Resident Evil, but the likes of Devil May Cry, Megaman, Okami, Viewtiful Joe, Godhand, and many more games.
Knew I was getting VJ vibes outside of the cel-shading.
Finally somebody gets it, and hopefully they aren't overworked to finish a product, Japanese work culture's harsh

About to install tonight. These kinds of smaller double a games that are polished and full one time purchases is what the gaming industry needs right now. One or two of these smaller projects a year from Xbox would be amazing to see in addition to at least one big hitter a year like Starfield.

Definite 'Sunset Overdrive' vibes from 'HiFi Rush'. It's a lovely-looking game with a charming lead character (for once) and fun gameplay. The art style is beautifully executed and the colours pop. Tango hit it out of the park.
Love that game too. Wish Xbox could find a dev to make another one. Maybe toys for bob if they get activision
They don't play all that much the same, but the vibes are very similar

One weird side effect of playing too much hifi rush for me is that now i am finding beats in the real world as well like in the traffic or in my house and snapping my fingers like chai and vibing with them.
Hahah same, i started playing another game after this one, and i instinctively jumped attacked and dodge to the beat of the songs 😂
sounds reminiscent of Synesthesia: Not as cool as imagining Physgun from GMod, where dragging something up and letting it drop is common place rather than using the mouse scroll.
I cannot get over how great this game looks. The art style, animations, and camera use (ESPECIALLY in the in-game cutscenes) are downright perfect at times.
It's incredibly refreshing to see so many of these AAA studios putting out these more unique and refined smaller scale experiences.

Hi-Fi Rush made me so damn happy. I love this game and the more you play it the better it gets
This cell shading looks 10/10, we've come a long way. This game came out of nowhere and I hope it does well because it looks great and people seem to love it.
HiFi-Rush for me is the first GOTY-Contender of 2023 (obviously with all the big AAA-Games still coming it will probably not be at the top at the end of the year, but I will probably keep it in my personal list of best games 2023 for sure)
Also, I think Tango just created 2 iconic Xbox Characters if handled well. Both Chai and 808 have such unique designs and personalities (amplified with amazing voice acting) that I can easily see them become mascot figures if handled correctly in the future. They are for me no doubt
It feels great when you can feel excited about a new game again. Let's hope this streak can continue

I've yet to play it, but I think I am going to give it a try. I honestly admire how much confidence it shows that they would just release it right after announcing the game for the first time.
Sane. The art style is absolutely amazing. Just hate that it's a rhythm game. So I unfortunately am already expecting to not like the game play.

I tried a few and never finished a rthym or anime style game fo date. This game tho... i cant get enough of it. Just give it a try it just might pull you in too
I'm on the third chapter and it's already up there for one of my favorite releases of the year. The rhythm-based facet of the gameplay actually works in that you're only incentivized to fight on beat instead of punished for playing off beat. You don't have to time your attacks, because you always hit on beat, it's your button presses that matter. That's only for offense, though. Defense is harder, because you _do_ have to time your dodges and parries. But because the enemies _also_ have to fight on beat, all you have to do is just follow the BGM and think about what you want to pull off before you execute it. If you're used to DMC or Bayonetta, it's basically just that but with a metronome at all times. Just don't bother with the visual cues, because holy shit, the screen gets clogged with VFX that fuck all that up as soon as it starts getting challenging.
Definitely buy it! Its so damn good!

Hi-Fi Rush is the first Tango Gameworks game I could see myself actually playing. I'm not a survival horror fan. I haven't play a rhythm game since PaRappa the Rapper and Vib-Ribbon.

The game is pretty big actually! Levels are usually 30mins to an hour, and there are plenty of them. Looking to be about 10-15 hours for the main story
Welp, someone did the whole thing in 8 hours, still tho, for a short game....goddamn its plot is WELL EXECUTED.
But also its beat, the game is constantly in SYNC! Man, never got bored at any moment of it.
@@Meow_Meow_Hurts_Real_Bad Personally 8 hours is the perfect time for am action especially if the harder difficulties and ranking system encourage repeat playthroughs, suddenly an 8 hour game becomes 100 hours, like dmc, bayonetta, ninja gaiden, god hand, the wonderful 101 etc..

This game is a nostalgia trip and a half!!! Reminds me of my youth renting games like this from Blockbuster like De Blob or Cubix.
AA titles were underrated hidden gems from Microsoft as w/ Sunset Overdrive.
I hope we get a sequel to this, it's so refreshing. The only open world game I'm looking forward to for the time being is Starfield.
This game is so amazing I had to stop in the middle of the boss fight cause I was so hyped by the music and the game play, I didn't even care if I died
I just finished playing HiFi Rush, and holy moly, was this game absolutely incredible. I went into this game just wanting to play something new,and now i want another game like it... very well done.
I beat it, and am doing end game stuff right now. The game is damn near perfect in every way.

Same, I found it hard to believe that Akechi and Chai are voiced by the same person because of how drastically different they are as characters at first, but it's true. That's really cool. And the game is fantastic too!

This game is seriously just pure FUN. It honestly is super refreshing because I’m just purely having fun. Gameplay is super fluid, music is great, animation is fantastic.

I'm not even a fan of hack and slash style games but I feel like this game was made for me. Not only is it very rock music focused, but it also looks and runs incredibly well at 4k 120fps on my rig and to top it all off it surprised dropped a day before my birthday.
I'm only a couple of bosses in but I have really enjoyed my time with the game so far.
Massive respect for MS and Bethesda greenlighing and releasing this. I hope it sells as well as it deserves to.

This game is not only fantastic; I think it’s straight up the best game Tango has ever made. I would be completely okay with them dropping horror entirely and doubling down on more creative projects like this.

My crazy conspiracy theory is that Shinji Mikami made tango to make games like this since it fits more into mikami's style post resident evil 4(crazy cool animation mixed with fun deep combat).
God hand is a zany, crazy, deep action game that was a commercial flop but those are the kind of games Mikami wants to make. Even back in 2014 some Mikami fans were saying he was forced to make a resident evil 4 style game since that was his biggest success aside from 1

Got credits today. Charming little game. Reminds me of a Platinum release. Not super long and you're meant to master the mechanics and do replays of missions.
This game's context is absolutely crazy:
- They go from modern and realistic horror and ghost games to a Ps2/Xbox era cartoony beat em up
- The game is ANNOUNCED and RELEASED on the same day
- The game is actually fun and satisfying
The cutscene of this game is better than most 3d animated show I see, like I can see them making animated show just using in game engine

I am in love with the game's art style! It transitions between 2d and 3d animation beautifully and both are animated really well. I love everything about this game
Shadow drops are cool but this game honestly deserved some marketing
I though so too but thinking about it more I think what Xbox did was the best thing they could have done for this game. If it was in a larger show it would have drowned and be forgotten. And if it had a longer marketing it probably would have been trashed on by the anti-Xbox fans, making fun of the games and destroying the hype. I think the shadow drop was prefect because it gave is instant hype being in a smaller showcase and it gave no time for the haters to try to destroy hype because people could instantly try the game out and see if they like it. And it worked, there’s a lot hype, people are playing like crazy and it’s selling crazy good in steam for a shadow drop (been at the top 3-5 best selling games on steam for a good bit of time)

Nah this was DEFINITELY the best move, tbh I'm hoping they even do something similar to this maybe just like 2 or 3 weeks for Starfield.. It gets hype high and if games come out complete in a great state it runs the money up..

Through the Halls of History on the museum level gave me some heavy Persona 5 vibes. This game is awesome.

Saw the reviews and had no idea it was a thing! Instantly downloaded it last night Friday at 7pm and played it till 3am. It's sooo good! The fighting feels amazing when you hit all perfect combos, takes some getting used to but once you get it down, it's hard to put down
The fact that this game was shadow-dropped literally *one day* after Forspoken came out, and costs less than half of that pile of trash, is proof that miracles exist.
And if I remember correctly it was selling better on steam then forspoken is absolutely hilarious and ironic.

Bruh, in the last levels you can get so much into the beat its actually fun to input combos while enjoying the beat to the awesome songs.

So damn fun I'm about 6 hrs in now and it's one if the best and most fun games I've played in YEARS... like the last time I had this much enjoyment in a single player game was elden ring and honestly idk which one I like better.. I highly suggest EVERYONE plays it who can.. its even worth the 30 buck purchase if you don't have game pass... just too good to miss

What a start to the year for first party games 👍
Playing this on hard mode is a STRUGGLE the old school kind, it is a quarter muncher. My only complaint, sometimes there are unskipable dialogue before a fight, and sometimes you just want to get back in there, but because of the checkpoint system doesn’t immediately start at the beginning of a fight sometimes, you have to watch unskipable dialogue over and over. But it’s probably a me issue since I’m playing on the hardest difficulty. other than that, the dialogue is the perfect amount of camp this far, the world is vibrant, the enemies are varied and hard as balls, the boss fights are a spectacle, and I wish there were more of them!
if you don’t have game pass, it’s 30 US and worth every penny IMO
This is like these few metal rhythm shooters (metal hellsinger) gimmick mashed with dmc gameplay, in a sunset overdrive style world, and it works tremendously! One of the best games ive played recently

in the past year, we’ve gotten two awesome rhythm action games on game pass, metal hellsinger, and hifi rush. i’m so glad that the people at game pass realize how fun these are and how much people love them!

First games I thought of when I started playing this were Jet Set Radio and Viewtiful Joe. It feels like it came right out of the early 2000s. I'm loving it so far.

This is the charm and passion most AAA games are missing now. Remember on ps2 when you had both Ratchet and clank And Jak and daxter games just pull you in the story by their characters? Games were so creative and fun.
The combat in this game is visceral. My son saw me play the game and instantly wanted to play.

This game is great!! I like how as the game goes on it introduces new mechanics, enemies, and challenges. It really is constantly keeping it fresh while also building on what they introduced earlier in the game.

I was really hoping this would be more like jet set radio! Sadly it's not.
I played it, while I didn’t think it was bad, I didn’t really care for the rhythm esq. nature of the game, I played for as long as I could before I got tired of it.
I downloaded the first day that it came out and I was really surprised of how AWESOME this game is. Is a challenging at the beginning but the more you play the more you get the rhythm and combos and don’t forget your headphones, is a blast!

Immediately LOVED the art style. This is exactly the kind of game that draws me to it. Combat wasn't really doing it for me initially, and it wasn't until I put on some headphones that the combat clicked. Also, It gets really fun once you get about half way through the second mission. So try to give it at least that much time.
This game is awesome! It is that style of game that when you start, you just don't want to stop! I had to set an alarm to stop and go do other things, and besides having a good challenge it's still relaxing, because you sync with the vibe and is like you flow with the game! Amazing concept, killer soundtrack and extremely enjoyable gameplay.

Really good review, Matty! I am truly astounded at how incredibly well done this game is. The art direction is just godlike. Visually, it feels a lot like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. And that is a VERY good thing, as that flick is one of my all-time favorite animated flicks.. It's a true visual feast. The characters are charismatic and goofy in a good way. And the best thing is that it's a joy to play. I don't like rhythm games. I just suck at them. Hell, I'm a 60 year old diabetic with nerve damage in my hands. And yet I'm doing well in the game. I'm actually getting a bunch of perfects in each fight and I'm playing on normal difficulty. I thought I'd need the beat helper meter, but I find that the cat, 808, is just right for helping me hit the beats. I'm up to the first boss now, and am looking forward to finishing this game. I honestly can't recommend this game enough.
When you said about the dodge, I done exactly the same I went dodge,dodge, break. Dodge, dodge, break. It changed my gameplay withing 2 minutes. Cannot underestimate this enough
The best way I can describe how this game feels and plays, is it’s very video gamey and in such a good way. So many games are trying to be interactive movies and high tension experiences. It’s very refreshing to play a video game that knows it’s kind of arcade-like.
