For me, the cutscenes were so well executed (technically) with such great characters and voice acting that I honestly always looked forward to every single one of them. But you definitely also have to like the style they were going for here and if you don't fully, the cutscenes could be a bit bloated
That has been my complaint with MS exclusives. Their cut scenes suck. Halo Infinite for example only had one great intro scene to establish the genre but then they gave us nothing to look forward to. I find that to be the thing that sets PS games apart
@@TekkLuthor well, for Halo I can see it. They simply didn't give us cutscenes with action but only once with dialog (which is a decision by the devs, one that not everybody will like) But I think Hi-Fi Rush had great Cutscenes over all and also quite a few with great action in them. The problem from this video were that some dialog scenes were too long which I could see but the overall quality of the cutscenes is for what style they went for pretty great in my opinion
I haven't even noticed them being long, they're Into The Spiderverse quality, hand-posed models with genuinely entertaining writing. I'm always screengrabbing them and looking forward to the next

From this video cutscenes seem to have a weird lag to them unlike the gameplay portion. This likely has some tie to why they feel so long. It makes me feel sick which is something that has never happened in any game before and I haven't seen a game go from perfectly smooth in play to what I can only describe as dropping to what feels like 15 fps.
@@Buglin_Burger7878 That's the thing, the devs are going for that 15 fps in their cutscenes coz it gives motion a staccato hand-drawn animation quality. Also I'm not skipping the cinematics in my second playthrough or thrid, because something yo ushould have mentioned is that this game has full customizable AUDIO options for a ton of languages, so if you know more than one language or you are learning another its very good to make use of that!
Thanks for the vid! I look forward to playing this game, the OST is fire. I find a lot of reviewers complain about cutscenes these days and that is really unfortunate. I get it, you guys only have so much time for reviewing/playing each game, but when a studio actually cares about their game and make use of talented voice actors, I wish you guys would not be negative about the cutscenes slowing you down. We need more quality in the industry, not less.
Which is strange, if they complain it in one game but they are fine with another one and its way longer game, so it's probably have to do with the person too.
I'm on the last boss fight right now and tbh even tho it's marketed as a rhythm game, it's barely one at all, the theme is definitely centered around music but it's definitely not integral to how you PLAY the game. The first 2-3 chapters it feels more important, but once your crew grows, combat gets a dose of steroids. I did not think this game was going to look so colorful and full of action. I absolutely love this gem. Plus the cutscenes feel like I'm watching an anime in a way and some of the transitions from cutscenes to gameplay is just incredible. If you are a gamepass subscriber it's a no brainer but if not you can possibly try it out for a $1 right now thats how I'm currently playing it on pc, but I will eventually end up buying it on steam because I absolutely would love a sequel to this and want to support this game as much as possible.
its not hard to beat the game, however achieving hi ranks requires insane insane timing, also its definitely one of those games that should be played on hard, normal allows you to brute force wayy too much
This game was such a breath of fresh air. I’ve seen a lot of cell shaded games, but this one pulls it of in such a beautiful, Saturday morning cartoon way. I find it to be quite funny as well and the shadow drop was just the Cherry on top.
Such a charming game, grabbed me by its silliness and hooked me by the combat & gameplay loop. I think the tutorial fridge interactions are ace and the stage tutorials are necessary too.
I love the Evil Within throwback, the detective "SebAAA". Didn't realize it until second time I saw him. Pretty obvious, but just added to the great character.
Didnt expect much from this game, had no prior background about it bust just went ahead and tried it. In the first few minutes I noticed that even Chai's steps were always, ALWAYS with the beat I had a huge smile on my face. Maybe not for everyone, but if youre looking for something fresh and interesting this game wont let you down.
I have to say, I really love the style and quality of your reviews. I've been subscribed for years because I love the format/gimmick of "before you're about to buy this, here's something important you have to know which might affect your purchase", but the actual review and minor details are all brilliantly discussed. So that even for games I wasn't about to buy - that I want that "do I, dont I buy" info. You do such a great job explaining a game and putting it on my radar in the first place so I watch your videos even for games I wasn't intending on buying in the first place. Also gotta say I appreciate the timing of your use of the 'A' quicktime event coinciding with the word A in an unrelated sentence at 9:10
after all the same sauce again and again by bigs companies, this game just feel like a gem. a must play and especially seeing the disapointment provided by recent games like forspoken and saints row, having such a clean and polished new ip appearing when we didnt even expect it just give me the GOTY Vibe. just like how elden ring slammed 2022, this game will certainly be on of the GOTY 2023 contenders
Ngl I'm almost more surprised that Jake didn't do the review for this game than I was about the release in the first place. I can hear him saying "video game ass video game"
As someone who has beat this game, If you think the cutscenes are to long then I think the games writing might not be your thing. Even the longest cutscenes in the game are only a few minutes and I found them fun, like a 90's cartoon written in the modern era.
In my humble opinion this game is absolutely a masterpiece, the most epic bossfight was Roquefort his music and his wolf form was an absolutely banger,i think this game deserves awards, maybe not goty but awards ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
5:59 "Alright! It's about to go down[ward the spiral]" if I may, Falcon. HiFi Rush just is that successful mostly because it reconnects with the inner essence of video game: having FUN! [edit] This is a strong "any people's list" GOTY contender.
Was definitely one of those games that we're lucky to have in Game Pass. Would have never bought it but it was interesting enough to give it a try. At the end, I loved it more than I expected. We need more games like this!
now that I have a one year old at home I hardly touch games because I know I might get 30 mins a few nights a week at most and its hard to get in to these massive open world slogs at all. this was the most fun I've had gaming in the past year, I was consistently excited to pick it back up when I could. 10/10 Bravo tango!
In all if the reviews, no one has mentioned Sunset Overdrive. The art style, the way it looks, comic book presentation, the color, the speed of the game and the story telling and humor. This game reminds me of Sunset Overdrive, there, I said it.
This game is absolutely amazing and incredibly fun. How do I know you ask? I've been willing to put up with the pain of cloud streaming on my xbox one just to play this game, that is how I know.
How did that work out for you? Doesn't cloud streaming make it hard to keep the beat because of delay? I might have to dust off my old xbone for this one. Looking good!
@@tobiaseriksson475 Like it was mentioned, you don't have to keep the beat to enjoy this game. Plus if I'm going to use cloud streaming, I tend to play at times where I can make maximum use of the bandwidth. Not saying cloud streaming is good, there are times when I can't play because of lag, but when it's good this game is a lot of fun and will almost guaranteed be one of the first games I play when I eventually upgrade.
I love how the use of music, high energy & visual style embodies Scott Pilgrim vs. The World & tbh i really wish we got that game instead but ill definitely check this out cuz I'm a slut for cell shaded graphics.
I just had open heart surgery and we are having a baby, money is tight but I would definitely be buying this game if we had the money for it! It looks absolutely amazing and a throwback to games of my childhood!
As a drummer, this game is my DREAM! I guess subconsciously I always thought it would be really cool if there were a game where everything you do is to the beat of a song. Hi-Fi RUSH is a masterpiece. I don’t even care about the story being just ok. The mechanics are just so well done!
This game consistently puts a smile on my face, which is so much more than I can say for most of the games that I currently have installed. Probably going to play through it more than once.
This seems like a game we never knew we needed. It’s a breath of fresh air in a world full of cinematic AAA playable movies. This game is an answer to questions like “What if, Edgar Wright ever directed a video game?”
Those movies are a million times better than this generic game. Come on dude you must honestly be stupid to think this is better than GoW or TLOU. Smh some people are just crazy.
I will say I also felt exactly the same about how long it took them to introduce the evasion mechanic of the game. If felt WAY too long. One thing that was not mentioned in this review that is another great feature of the game: In addition being able to turn on a visual beat tracker at the bottom of the screen, the WHOLE WORLD actually moves to the beat of your music. So while you are in combat, the entire background is subtly keeping you in sync. Just go back and watch this video again and you will see what I mean. In addition, the game makes a point of having the enemies both big and small also hit on the beat. As a result, there is no need to break your rhythm do dodge/evade. You can literally do everything you need to do without breaking with the cadence of the game. Really terrific design!
Personally loved the cinematics and didnt think they were long at all, but i do agree the tutorials were a bit of a drag at the start, though they do have to make sure people get how the game works. All in all, all my problems are nitpicks at most. 9.6/10 Want more games like this, FUN, light hearted and cheerful, daring ideas and deviating from the industry norm. Indie games already do these but they lack the budget to do it to this level.
I downloaded this immediately after the developer direct, rhythm games are decently rare enough but a AAA rhythm hybrid game with a vibe like this and style meter? Sign me the h*ck up!
This game has shown that alot of reviewers are 1) very slow at getting content out this game is almost 2 weeks old now 2) are afraid to give out perfect scores to niche games 3) have subjective opinions they like to pass off as fact. Like the dash mechanic do you not try to even press buttons to see what they do? You complain about the tutorials then complain about them not telling you about the dash Reviewers are becoming obsolete due to gamepass and I'm all for it
Had no idea what this game was, downloaded it after i saw the trailer at Xbox direct. fell in love with it. Not my style of game at all, but very well done. and Super fun!
Glad licensed music is still within games and they didn't just cut that off completely for some streamers. There are far more people who play games that aren't streamers than there are those who are
A wonderful reminder that the big guys still aren't afraid to take risks sometimes. And shadow-dropped on top of that? Surprising the game industry can still keep secrets as well. Props to all involved. It looks like a good time. Prolly won't play it myself but I'd like to see more
OMG you saw and heard my suggestion to review this game and you finally made it out, this is truly amazing! Thank you! you are the best and my most favorite TH-camr.

Also I'm not skipping the cinematics in my second playthrough or thrid, because something yo ushould have mentioned is that this game has full customizable AUDIO options for a ton of languages, so if you know more than one language or you are learning another its very good to make use of that!
No one is mentioning that this game is incredibly polished! Not a single bug or performance drops, nothing at all!!
If you are a gamepass subscriber it's a no brainer but if not you can possibly try it out for a $1 right now thats how I'm currently playing it on pc, but I will eventually end up buying it on steam because I absolutely would love a sequel to this and want to support this game as much as possible.
its not hard to beat the game, however achieving hi ranks requires insane insane timing, also its definitely one of those games that should be played on hard, normal allows you to brute force wayy too much
Their is the one boss which is essentially a rhythm game.
This game was such a breath of fresh air. I’ve seen a lot of cell shaded games, but this one pulls it of in such a beautiful, Saturday morning cartoon way. I find it to be quite funny as well and the shadow drop was just the Cherry on top.
This game is peak entertainment. Good story, good gameplay and sick world environment. Best thing i've played so far
Such a charming game, grabbed me by its silliness and hooked me by the combat & gameplay loop.
I think the tutorial fridge interactions are ace and the stage tutorials are necessary too.
Thanks for watching, I have a package for you.
This is why I subscribe to Gameranx: I didn’t even know this game existed and now I want to play it. Well done, you got at least one person hyped.
I was on the fence about getting a Xbox series x but with this game, and potentially more quality first party titles, I seriously would get one
Don’t be on the fence. I was too, but right now Xbox is really fun and were getting a lot more this year
Just get a pc, and a controller if that’s what you’re comfortable with.
@@nobosu I use my Xbox more than my PC. There's less work to have the game running adequately on a console.
No one had any background on this game.. it was announced and released on the same day like a week ago
This game is amazing.
It's as if Vash the Stampede was thrown into FLCL and given rythym combat. Well worth picking up.
this game really feels like it was made with the gamer set in mind. 😌 what a masterpiece.
I hope this game is spectacular, because I love the cat
This game had next to no advertisement, but so far best game of 2023
In my humble opinion this game is absolutely a masterpiece, the most epic bossfight was Roquefort his music and his wolf form was an absolutely banger,i think this game deserves awards, maybe not goty but awards ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The art style reminds me of a kid’s show you’d see on PBS, not a bad thing of course but I just got that vibe.
I hope this game gets nominated for game of the year
❤️🎮 I’m having fun with this game so far. It’s my first rhythm game but love the art style and the voice acting is pretty great. Fun for sure
5:59 "Alright! It's about to go down[ward the spiral]" if I may, Falcon.
HiFi Rush just is that successful mostly because it reconnects with the inner essence of video game: having FUN!
[edit] This is a strong "any people's list" GOTY contender.
Downloaded this from pc game pass the other day. Pretty excited to check it out!
glad to hear falcon healthy again! his voice was really effed up in the last few weeks :s haha
This is an early GOTY contender for me.
I'm happy you mentioned the possible Seinfield reference, I've been thinking that my whole time playing!
Before you buy, one of best games ever made
In all if the reviews, no one has mentioned Sunset Overdrive. The art style, the way it looks, comic book presentation, the color, the speed of the game and the story telling and humor. This game reminds me of Sunset Overdrive, there, I said it.
This game came out of nowhere and I love every second of it.
I can’t shake this feeling that Chai looks strikingly similar to Prince Callum from The Dragon Prince.
I can't unsee it now
Game is a 10/10 masterpiece. One of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

@@z3rotollranc3 👍
Such am amazing game! Once you get the rhythm down it's amazing! And the humor keeps me tuned in!
👍🏼
Downloaded as soon as it was available. Finished it a few days back. Absolutely loved it. It is the closest Scott Pilgrim game we can get I think. 🙂🙃
Man I wish I had an Xbox sometimes. Definitely on the agenda for this year
The idea of mixing rhythm and combat really intrigues me. I'm going to check this out.
10/10 game for me, and I don't say that lightly.
Apparently you do because this is nowhere near a 10/10. A 7/10 maybe.
@@smellywaffels1967 My guess is, you probably have not played it if you think that.
I love how the use of music, high energy & visual style embodies Scott Pilgrim vs. The World & tbh i really wish we got that game instead but ill definitely check this out cuz I'm a slut for cell shaded graphics.
How do u fail to time so many of the finishers? It’s honestly impressive
I just had open heart surgery and we are having a baby, money is tight but I would definitely be buying this game if we had the money for it! It looks absolutely amazing and a throwback to games of my childhood!
Congratulations on the baby!
i love the artstyle and animations and effects, its so amazing
As a drummer, this game is my DREAM! I guess subconsciously I always thought it would be really cool if there were a game where everything you do is to the beat of a song. Hi-Fi RUSH is a masterpiece. I don’t even care about the story being just ok. The mechanics are just so well done!
This game blew me away. I didn't expect to connect with it as well as I do when we saw the showcase the day of release. Playing it now lol
@@smellywaffels1967 i think the point flew right over your head.
Only $30?! Sounds like a must buy to me. & It looks great.
9:15 perfectly in Sync

I loved hi-fi rush it was really awesome and tons of fun
Personally loved the cinematics and didnt think they were long at all, but i do agree the tutorials were a bit of a drag at the start, though they do have to make sure people get how the game works. All in all, all my problems are nitpicks at most. 9.6/10
Want more games like this, FUN, light hearted and cheerful, daring ideas and deviating from the industry norm. Indie games already do these but they lack the budget to do it to this level.
I downloaded this immediately after the developer direct, rhythm games are decently rare enough but a AAA rhythm hybrid game with a vibe like this and style meter? Sign me the h*ck up!
👌
AA
The cutscenes - I wish they were longer. They are amazing. I’d binge a full season of this show, if it was a show.
This game has shown that alot of reviewers are
1) very slow at getting content out this game is almost 2 weeks old now
2) are afraid to give out perfect scores to niche games
3) have subjective opinions they like to pass off as fact. Like the dash mechanic do you not try to even press buttons to see what they do? You complain about the tutorials then complain about them not telling you about the dash
Reviewers are becoming obsolete due to gamepass and I'm all for it
The steam reviews is why I bought this game.
its one of the few titles my 3090 can play in 4K 120hz without making wind sounds.
So much fun.
This Before You buy should start by saying "Yes, buy it."
Chai reminds me of Ryuji. And that is a huge compliment to the writing and acting.
This is one of my favorite games this year for 2023! Good job Tango Gameworks & Bethesda!
Every second was a banger!! 10/10, even beating it on the hardest difficulty was insane!

This looks a lot like Viewtiful Joe. I'm sold...
Had no idea what this game was, downloaded it after i saw the trailer at Xbox direct. fell in love with it. Not my style of game at all, but very well done. and Super fun!
Hi Fi Rush is really fun! Definitely try it if you have Game Pass!
Glad licensed music is still within games and they didn't just cut that off completely for some streamers.
There are far more people who play games that aren't streamers than there are those who are
GOTY for me, What a banger, If you love music, you will enjoy this game
A wonderful reminder that the big guys still aren't afraid to take risks sometimes. And shadow-dropped on top of that? Surprising the game industry can still keep secrets as well. Props to all involved. It looks like a good time. Prolly won't play it myself but I'd like to see more
Wow, this game with awesome. I hope it comes to the PlayStation five.
OMG you saw and heard my suggestion to review this game and you finally made it out, this is truly amazing! Thank you! you are the best and my most favorite TH-camr.

We need more AA games like HiFi Rush, AAA tripe are a dime a dozen these days.
@Mrslothymacaroony budget accounts into that. This game has money put into it but it’s not triple A money or promotion. It was shadow dropped
This game for me felt like sunset overdrive and jet set had a love child that wants to be a rockstar, and is quite possible the most fun I've had with an xbox title since GoW3
Finally a game that focuses on being a game.
Rhythm games aren’t real games. They’re sad excuses that need to fade away into obscurity.
@@HULK-HOGAN1 Much more real game than that worthless trash-tier game called Forspoken or snoozefest zombie slasher called Callisto Craptocol 💯💯
@@HULK-HOGAN1 you sound jealous!!!
WTF, the cutscenes were the best part of an already amazing game. How can you say the plot is "fine"?? It's literally a journey backwards through videogame development, it's such smart satire. At the end of the say it is a simple story, but there's depth!
