As a small boy growing up in London, my WW1 veteran Grandfather would tell me "Jimmy, my boy, always have a note book and pencil-you never know when you'll need a small boy to run an errand for you.

I genuinely think a notebook and pen kept me sane in 2020. Hmm, at some point I need to check one of those notebooks. Maybe I'll pick one up next time I'm in London. I have the exact same pen in black with timascus bolt and in the mini variety.

And for regular folks here in Australia, Woolworths sell the Picadilly Essential Notebook, same size but with 192 pages, hard back with page marker and elastic closure for $2.99. Add the Bic classic 4 colour ball point pen (with lanyard bracket) and you're good to go!

I have been using Smythson notebooks for about 20 years now. Typically with a fountain pen (Parker or Yard-O-Lead) or the occasional Space pen. The paper is superb and wears very well even against moisture and rugged conditions. Despite it being thin paper, it is a rag paper that is quite durable.

Wow I never knew about those. Those are awesome. I’m glad I watched the whole video because I’m not super into writing on paper to match but when I saw that you can fold it open and it will stay open whatever page you’re at while you write I was sold on it.

I carry a similarily sized Moleskein and prefer to use a mechanical pencil when writing/sketching. I like the scritch sound of pencil lead on paper. The other recommendation is to use Evernote as an archival source. I use my iPhone camera to take an image of the page and save in the cloud. It is always with me on all my electronic devices.

I caved in a bought the notebook, pen and Pentel Energel 0.7 refills. The pen was upgraded by removing the spring and putting a softer one in there, taken from a freebie retractable ballpoint. The pen is great, as is the notebook. I prefer the Pilot G2 refills to the Pentel refills, but as I have bought ten of them they should keep me going for a while yet. Thanks again for the video.

I've used a Pocket Flip-Top battleboard XS with a RITR pad inside since they came out. It is golden. The clear write-on wipe-off on the back makes any piece of paper a whiteboard without permanently marking the paper. My pen with it is the non-boltaction version of that pen (Ti pocket pro, i think...dont have the box anymore).

For me it’s a ‘Rite in the Rain’ with a Fisher Space Pen in my day sack, with a mini ‘Rite’ notebook (credit card sized) and a telescoping Zebra pen in my wallet.
In my hiking gear I carry a length of bendy pencil. I’ve carried one for years - all through my time in the Army and since - and I’ve never had the lead break. You can’t sharpen a biro :)

I have a Fisher Bullet space pen, but I just can't get on with the way the ink 'blobs' up as I am writing, leaving 'splodges' on the page. I do appreciate the short/long pen style though, and their toughness. When I write it tends to be with fountain or gel pens. Where the gel pens fall down is that I get through the refills really quickly, so need a spare to hand wherever I am. I am glad to hear that the FP pen is working out for you though.

Great video! Another selling point on the Big Idea is the clip is similar to a knife clip. If I’m just wearing a t-shirt, I just clip it to my pants pocket. The collet at the tip also prevents tip wiggle. Ingenious! I’ll check out the notebook sometime probably!

I use these notebooks each and every day. They last me about 2 months per book. Chosen specifically to enjoy the process of writing. Basically used as a journal, common place, general notes type book. Love being detached from phone and laptop, slows me down and allows me to empty my mind and enjoy ink on paper. Quality is superb. Expensive. But quality. I use a Montblanc Starwalker which was a gift from my wife many years ago. Love the ink, expensive but they last for months of daily writing. Great vids. Thanks.

Fair play to you mate for going the length you do to find out what works for YOU. I have some paper (both notebook pages and 'write in the rain' pages in my wallet and I always have a pen in my pocket. I have a couple of True Utility collapsible pens too but I always have a 'grab' pen, at the moment its a cheapish one my Missus bought me but a Bic will do. Its a handy combination for writing stuff like a round of beers, the registration plates of ne'er do wells, a round of beers, noting down the important bits of a telephone call, a round of beers..... you get the picture.

Thanks for showing this! I understand the draw of a quality notebook-pen combo, and if it weren't for the price-point I'd already be going for your suggestions. The detail you go into with these is really appreciated; if there's someone looking for a specific quality of the products you went over your review gives them the vocabulary they need to find it; which is always appreciated in reviewers.

I get it. I’ve spent a small fortune looking for the correct combo of pad and pen.
I’ve settled on Rite in the Rain, which isn’t cheap either, however, I’m in the elements much of the time.
This would make a great gift for someone, maybe myself, for those few times I’m able to clean up and roll like I actually have a life. 😆 Appreciate

Have several notebooks that I keep in each of the different bags I carry depending on what I am doing that day, and a fisher space pen attached to each.
Have recently purchased a Travelers Company notebook as my EDC and a Lamy Safari fountain pen, if I get on with the fountain pen I may indulge a little on a Midori Brass fountain pen :)

Great review as always Jon, I really like the notebook but a little pricey for me. I use a Leuchtturm1917 A6 softcover that seems to be a cheaper alternative with either a Kaweco pocket fountain pen or if travelling a Parker Jotter with gel refill both use blue/black ink. I find this combo works for me. But if I am in Bond street I will be sorely tempted!!!

I was about to query the "legendary" in the title but having heard the pedigree of the notebook you may be right (see what I did there). Had you topped it off and told me Shackleton kept his log in one I would have been sold. Nice to see and appreciate beautiful things - thanks for the video. I think I need to cultivate the writing habit in a cheaper alternative first before investing.

Wonderful words of wisdom about the value of handwriting, I couldn't agree more. I've handwritten notes every day at uni for years, and some of my contemporaries ask me why while they copy-paste the powerpoint into evernote and call it a day (an extreme case, but I've seen it several times).
I use the Moleskine Cahier journals (XL, plain, brown), they come in a set of three, are good value for money and feel great to lay flat on a table with plenty of room to write. I have tried many alternatives to the Uni-Ball Eye Micro pen, but none have come close (though my Parker pen wins in terms of aesthetics).
I used to use the classic Moleskine notebooks for journalling, but have recently switched to Leichtturm for better paper and value. I'm also writing my second novel in a larger Leichtturm that's approx. A4-sized and it's an amazing experience!

you just corrected the way I pronounce Smythson, thanks! (they are indeed not cheap but paper is an expensive goods and the quality is on the higher end of the market so it is understandable.. the general finish is also is among the absolute best and the binding is, again, among the absolute best.. quality doesn't come cheap).

I started carrying a notebook as a part of my EDC about 2 months ago and love it. I have been using a field notes pocket notebook mostly just because its what I had but would like to upgrade to something a little nicer. The Smythson might be one too consider. Ive been carrying a Kaweco fountain pen for a while as well but also like to use my Parker Jotter.

I agree with the idea of having a note pad and pen but the price tags on yours made my jaw drop. My note pads get damp from sweat or unexpected rain and I lose pens either by forgetting where I put it down or loaning them to others. I suppose if I were more of a deep thinker or a creative person I could "maybe" justify that expense but I just use mine for quick lists, directions, instructions, and leaving notes for others on torn out pages. A mini composition notebook and dollar store pen serve my needs well enough. But if your notes are super important and you have the money then go with what makes you happy.

I don't use a paper notebook much but these Edc videos make me think maybe I should start doing it again.
What I do still use daily is a paper calendar, usually a smaller size, but some years I opt for a full size.
As for what pen to use, for years, I used the Fisher Cap O Matic space pen, but this year I switched over to the Parker Jotter XL, with the Schmidt 900 ballpoint ink. For years, I went with the Fisher for its reliability, but I think the Schmidt ink actually flows better and looks slightly better. So for now, I mostly use the Parker Jotter at work, or working from home.
I do have a bolt action pen, the Cool Hand bolt action with a Fisher refill. I did that because it sits in my car, so whether the pen has been sitting overnight in below zero weather, or baking in the sun, I know the Fisher ink will work.

Here in the States some of the most popular pocket notebooks that are reasonably priced are Rhodia, Field Notes, Rite Rain, and Word. notebooks.
That pen OMG that is such an awesome pen! I love bolt action pens and the fact that you can use just about any refill ink in it. 👍👍👍
I have always carried a pen or two a mechanical pencil with either a small notebook or paper since I was a teen along with a pocket knife.

I wondered if you would do a video on the conventions you use in your note book. For example, you had one page where you are writing at a 90 angle to the other entries. Do you do this when making a list? Any other idioms that are repeated? Sketch first and write later. Or the reverse, write and then later add sketches?

I purchased the stonewashed finished and dlc coated ones. There was a discount for buying two. I was very close to getting the raw titanium, and I'm still thinking I should have gotten that one instead of the stonewash. It's not that there's anything wrong with the stonewash, I just think that raw titanium looks very nice. I did pay extra for the timascus (I think that's what they're calling it) replacement thumbstud for a little extra colour.

Looks very good both in video quality and the products shown. I understand using only 256 pages a year (5 pages per week) doesn’t break the bank even with these prices but that isn’t very realistic for me.
I carry a 9x14 cm notebook (that is personal size not pocket size) too for personal and work each and I use 7 pages per working day.
That makes this notebook way too expensive for “normal use”. (EDC)
Would like to have one though but then for something special.

I was thrilled with your overview, Jon. I've carried the notebook for a while now. They are pricey, but well worth it to me. The feel of the leather and quality of the paper is second to none. I use it with a Mont Blanc Meisterstuck. The Big Idea pen I had not heard of until watching your video. The black DLC one is now on its way. It won't replace the Mont Blanc, which I use for formal occasions, when wearing a suit for example, but it will become my EDC instrument of choice. Great review as always.

I've now bought a Smythson Panorama and compared the paper with Tomoe River 52gsm (Japanese), which is loved by fountain pen enthusiasts for its minimal show-through and feathering with fountain pen inks. The Smythson paper performs virtually as well! I'm not aware of a similar notebook made from Tomoe River paper.

I always carry at least one pocket notebook on me and at least one pen. I also have that Big I design pen, although I swapped in a Parker style gel refill. I do like the look of your notebook, much nicer than the field notes brand ones I use. But at $70 for yours versus the $15 for a three pack of mine, I'll have to check out the sale to get one.

There aren't many alternatives satisfying (1) non-paper cover, (2) tough enough for EDC, (3) around 90-by-140cm. One is the Rhodia Rhodiarama Leatherette: it weighs 140g, has 96 pages of 90g paper, and costs about a tenner.

I really enjoy your videos. I have always struggled with pen and paper v iPhone notes. Great to here your thoughts on which to use. and when. The notes you made in your notebook look very neat and very easy to read. Would you be able to give us examples of what you write in it, what you highlight and what you don’t and what you write in the notebook versus digitally. Do you ever just simply scan the notebook with your phone to make a digital version of it? If you could do any of the above that would be fantastic.

I’m sure it’s a good notebook. I prefer Rocketbook. They come in different sizes and I have many of them. It does smudge using the type of pens you have to use which is it’s biggest drawback but for me it takes the best of both ways of writing, hand and you can scan it to a computer using most note apps.

I've carried a small notebook of various makes for years. I've tried many pens but I find I prefer a mechanical pencil because I change my mind often while writing and I need to erase, also I sketch quite a bit. Lead is better than ink for drawing.

Jonathon I’m enjoying your channel a lot. However, while I’m not broke, my income is apparently more limited than yours is. I’m so grateful for the comments section where I’m finding great suggestions for budget priced items that serve the purpose. It would be very helpful if in some of your future reviews you would offer your favorite and first choice for the item in question (price notwithstanding) but then also offer maybe one or two budget-friendly alternatives that you have tested or used on your journey to finding the best choice.
