I'm a 60's child and always carried a soft cotton handkerchief too, not for my nose but keeping my glasses clean as had glasses since early teens- no microfibres back then ☺. They are now so well washed and soft haven't bothered swapping.
I carry one too just because people kept recommending it, it's really useful but i mostly use it for wiping the sweat off of my forehead for working on summer or as a scarf on the winter
I went to a Catholic grade school and I remember being around 10 years old and my school would all go to mass periodically and I remember sitting in the church one time when my nose started to bleed. Our science teacher was right near me and he took out his handkerchief and pinched my nose in it and brought me over to the school to the nurse, who took care of me. His handkerchief was soaked in blood and I brought it home and my mom laundered it and I brought it back to school to give it back to the science teacher. Times were very different and wholesome back in the mid 1970’s when this happened. I remember holding his handkerchief with a feeling of reverence that he would be so generous and kind. Today I carry a folded bandanna in my back pocket for basically the same reason: emergency use.
My grandfather (born very late 1800's) left a collection of pocket sized appointment books that also contained tables of all sorts of data such as travel times and distances between major cities, radio station callsigns and locations, etc. Today we have smartphones.
Wonderful video! As someone who was raised by my grandparents it really reminded me of the well worn knife, pencil and notepad and the ever present handkerchief.

In Germany the Feuerhand lanterns were used to light up roadwork sites before battery powered lanterns that could shine for more than 8 or 12 hours were available. And they are really reliable in any weathe condition. I have one , simply great.

These small lights were made by most of the major manufactures, and were rectangular in shape, consisting of two AA cells next to one another in series, a sliding side switch, and an exposed light bulb on top. Quite novel, really, but they would have provided a readily pocketable source of light without a flame. I found one in the cow stall of an 1830 farmstead I worked a few years ago, and while it's sadly beyond repair, it is an extremely interesting trinket to own. Keep up the excellent work!
Nice stuff Jon. The only difference between the current Old Hickory and the older ones is the slot. The older ones had a nail nick. Good gear should never go out of style.
Hey Jon, remember me? I commented about the how I never use rechargeable flashlights? And told about my experience in a hurricane that lets us with power for 3 months? Well, I can add that I have a trusty hurricane lamp that worked very well! We can find those lamps everywhere locally and cheap, less than 10$. Our people never stopped using it.
This is my theme, brass, leather, micarta. I love the old school look, but I also like all the advances made throughout the years so all my stuff is mostly "old school look, but more modern features." Love it...

Beautiful and informative video as always. I have two off topic questions: 1. What watch are you wearing? 2. Do you plan to do a video with items made in Britain? That would be interesting for those of us who live far away. Maybe tackle the Brompton (is that the Swiss army knife of bicycles?) and other iconic British EDC items. It's just a video idea, but I would find it very interesting. I assume people could upvote this if they agreed.
I live in Texas, and my dad has always prefered to have a bandana on him. I've been trying to take up this habit as well, and it's incredibly useful. Handkerchiefs seem a bit "fancy" while bandanas which come in colored and patterned cotton cloth instead of various white materials just seem more utilitarian and practical.
Not to disrespect your father, but a bandana seems impractical compared to a handkerchief, specially in Texas weather lol. It'd be covered in sweat defeating it's purpose of having a clean cloth on your person

I'd rather pull out a red or blue cheap piece of cotton to wipe away sweat or blow my nose or wipe off my hands than a nicer white one. No offense taken, but I think you misunderstood the usage I was implying. The only real difference between the two is that a bandana is a thin piece of colored and patterned cotton cloth rather than an often nicer white cloth. Much of the intended usage is the same.

You can get them in blaze orange with survival tips written on them which makes them multi use. I really appreciated this vid after watching too many of guys trying to stuff a ridiculous amount of miniaturized items into a tin or pouch while trying to convince viewers it was practical EDC. With most of those kits I immediately envision the carrier hastily grabbing for his kit with "I got this!!" only to see the contents bursting out like a tactical party popper. Loved the heavy duty mechanical pencil, wallet and humorous suggestions on the field notes. Had to subscribe.
Nice collection. I carry a copper zippo that was hand engraved by an old world artist from Russia. He engraved a blacksmith motif on it for me. My edc knife is an Opinel Carbone No. 8 which I have customized to have a much more organic and flowing shape. Love vintage gear, I need to find that field notebook and cover.

Nice nostalgic stuff Jon! I have a request: Please make a video about flight-friendly EDC items and multitools. In my country (as well as others i guess) we are not allowed to carry knives unless for specific purposes, no matter how small, so even a little victorinox is illegal :(
Need to add some more for a new video: pocket watch and chain, tobacco pouch (no, I don't smoke), pipe, snuff tin (for prescribed meds), coin pouch, maybe even a walking stick. This could be a fun video to make/watch.
I actually carry a bandanna as a handkerchief. they are larger (22” square) than a traditional dress handkerchief. A TL-29 electrician’s pocketknife, a AA mini- mag light, and a flame less trench lighter round out the collection. The car has a mess kit, a Russian rain cape/shelter half, a six in one screwdriver, and a pair of fencing pliers. As well as it’s own TL-29, mag light, and trench lighter.
This came up in my recommendations, and what drew me in was the title of the video. I absolutely love old school/traditional gear and this video was genuinely enjoyable. Thank you very much for doing this video...by the way, all of my kitchen knives are old hickory....they're absolutely amazing!!!!

I’ve always had some occasional nasal drip, so I still carry a cotton handkerchief, which is vastly superior to wiping one’s nose on one’s sleeve. Cotton wrinkles, but is much more absorbent than polyester.

On that slip-joint knife, I think because the point of the blade lines up with the midline of the blade and handle, that's called a "spear point." I also think that the common "hank" of yesteryear has been replaced by the individual first aid kit. :)
Spear point I believe has a mirrored profile which this might actually have - got description from maker for this though. yes you might be right hanky=IFAK!
To a Brit that may be a hurricane lamp, but to an American it’s a lantern. “Hurricane lamp” is a bit of a vague term that is sometimes applied to lamps, lanterns, candle lanterns, etc. Without getting into the details of hot blast vs cold blast lanterns and their evolution, I’ll simply note that an American wanting a lantern similar to those of 1922 would buy a Dietz (even though they are made in Hong Kong now), of if he had money to spend he’d buy an American made lantern from W. T. Kirkman. I grew up with kerosene and propane lights; my parents did not get electricity until the mid 1970’s. I recall running our kerosene lamps on jet fuel in late 1974.
If you can find them there are butane inserts for Zippos, they run like a dream, you almost never have to refill them. I prefer the soft flame variety but there are jet flame inserts.

This is a really interesting theme. Could even extend it into a series based on differences in kit across global regions. While human needs are constant, exploring the different ways people went about meeting them is always neat. I'm surprised Jon went with an oil lamp for lighting. I would have thought a candle lantern would be more convenient for portability/safety. Alternatively, does anyone still make carbide lamps?
The Feuerhand Baby kicks out about the equivalent of 12 to 15 candles so it's more powerful than a candle lantern. These lamps are safe, I doubt if the cheap no-name lamps for a third of the price are as safe.
Would be nice to see more flashlight and knife companies make more products out of bronze. I own a pen and pencil in bronze (both with timascus bolt/pocket clip, and also own a set made in zirconium with timascus bolts/clips) from Tactile Turn and love them even though they were all a bit pricey. wish I could pair my bronze set up with a couple of mid-tech folders with bronze scales along with a nice bronze flashlight that has a max of say 1750 lumens and maybe have all the functions of say my Emisar D4V2 flashlight.

I love the Victorinox with both the awl on the scale and the rivets on the outside, like the old red one you show in the video. I'd like Victorinox to sell such knives at a normal price. They don't and no other brand makes that.
For camping, get a small, collapsible electric lantern. They are far more convenient and brighter. However, if you get surprised by a blackout at home, the good old hurricane lamp will always be ready for you...
My EDC knife is a current issue British Army knife, a design basically unchanged in over 100 years. It's flat and has a good blade, can & bottle opener, flat screwdriver and multi use spike. Good enough for me. 😁
A suggestion would be an Opinel knife, their No.8 size has been unchanged since 1890, besides adding the removable locking ring. It's also just my favorite knife in general. I've got a brass zippo made bank in the now defunct Canadian Zippo plant.
I am having a hard time finding an older version of the old hickory folder ever being made. Their website references the the folder as a new first option. Please clarify if the old hickory previously made folders or if it just a reference to the style of that era.

The carpenter's pencil has a hidden feature. The narrower width is 1/4", and the wider is 1/2". This is obviously very useful for craftspeople. :)

To a Brit that may be a hurricane lamp, but to an American it’s a lantern. “Hurricane lamp” is a bit of a vague term that is sometimes applied to lamps, lanterns, candle lanterns, etc. Without getting into the details of hot blast vs cold blast lanterns and their evolution, I’ll simply note that an American wanting a lantern similar to those of 1922 would buy a Dietz (even though they are made in Hong Kong now), of if he had money to spend he’d buy an American made lantern from W. T. Kirkman. I grew up with kerosene and propane lights; my parents did not get electricity until the mid 1970’s. I recall running our kerosene lamps on jet fuel in late 1974.

If you can find them there are butane inserts for Zippos, they run like a dream, you almost never have to refill them. I prefer the soft flame variety but there are jet flame inserts.

This is a really interesting theme. Could even extend it into a series based on differences in kit across global regions. While human needs are constant, exploring the different ways people went about meeting them is always neat.
I'm surprised Jon went with an oil lamp for lighting. I would have thought a candle lantern would be more convenient for portability/safety. Alternatively, does anyone still make carbide lamps?
Yes, really interesting 👍 Carbide lamps much more complex. Oil beats candle for light output, control, and runtime for weight on fuel.
The Feuerhand Baby kicks out about the equivalent of 12 to 15 candles so it's more powerful than a candle lantern. These lamps are safe, I doubt if the cheap no-name lamps for a third of the price are as safe.

Would be nice to see more flashlight and knife companies make more products out of bronze. I own a pen and pencil in bronze (both with timascus bolt/pocket clip, and also own a set made in zirconium with timascus bolts/clips) from Tactile Turn and love them even though they were all a bit pricey. wish I could pair my bronze set up with a couple of mid-tech folders with bronze scales along with a nice bronze flashlight that has a max of say 1750 lumens and maybe have all the functions of say my Emisar D4V2 flashlight.

I love the Victorinox with both the awl on the scale and the rivets on the outside, like the old red one you show in the video. I'd like Victorinox to sell such knives at a normal price. They don't and no other brand makes that.

For camping, get a small, collapsible electric lantern. They are far more convenient and brighter. However, if you get surprised by a blackout at home, the good old hurricane lamp will always be ready for you...

My dad use to carry a hanky around for his..🤧 I never really warmed up to the idea but I carry one now for my EDC or glasses 👓

My EDC knife is a current issue British Army knife, a design basically unchanged in over 100 years. It's flat and has a good blade, can & bottle opener, flat screwdriver and multi use spike. Good enough for me. 😁

A suggestion would be an Opinel knife, their No.8 size has been unchanged since 1890, besides adding the removable locking ring. It's also just my favorite knife in general. I've got a brass zippo made bank in the now defunct Canadian Zippo plant.
I am having a hard time finding an older version of the old hickory folder ever being made. Their website references the the folder as a new first option. Please clarify if the old hickory previously made folders or if it just a reference to the style of that era.
