Volvo XC70: How to Fix Fuel Leak

  • Warning: if you have air bag sensors in your back seat be careful not to damage, use caution with the seat upon removal. Also maybe disconnect the battery during the entire time that the sensor is unplugged may help. Something I did during this fix triggered the SRS-Airbag fault, and I am working on trying to reset at the moment... Anyway, This video shows a cheap and simple fix to this known issues with the Volvo XC70 Cross country fuel pump developing cracks in the plastic. My car was leaking gasoline on the ground, and failed the state inspection. If you don't like paying mechanics thousands of dollars to fix problems with your automobile, maybe this video can help. This was a $7.00 fix using JB weld, epoxy to patch the tiny cracks in the plastic fuel pump assemble. No special tools required.

    Just bought a used 2003 XC70 and it had the same problem. Mechanics quoted 1200 for 8 hours of labor, 3 weeks on parts, just to drop the tank out and inspect it since they saw fuel leaking down the side. This is called "going by the book," kids. I had to sign a liability release in order to drive it home because they deemed "unsafe," LOL. Threw on some 2 part epoxy with one hand and a beer in the other and called it a day. Volvo really thought ahead on this one (?) and made a handy little access door in the event their shitty Swiss plastic gave out. You can do this job with a deep socket metric set, a flathead screwdriver, some paper towels, and 10 bucks. Thanks for the video. Pro Tip: depressurize the system so your epoxy doesn't get wet while it sets (I used the 5 min set time stuff) by removing the lower hose. Be careful though, it is pressurized, and will spill a bit of fuel. Either way, you'd have to wait till the whole line drains onto the tank anyway, so might as well get it over quick!

    had same problem on mine, impact wrench, extention and sockets make the job very quick, you're doing it the hard way.
    The Haynes manual covers it quite well, got my service manual from IPD mail order.

    Starting the car with seatbelt unplugged gets you an SRS FAULT code.

    A good start do not re-install those seats, the epoxy will only slow the leak for a few days. The Fuel Pump Assy needs to be replaced. A PVC Pipe Fuel-Lock-Ring removal tool can be made with a Dremel Tool (196 or 199) cuter. Also, mark the positions of the pump and sender when these are remove and tie heavy cotton string to pick-up hose for a quick installation.

    • @jaynesnetwork
      @jaynesnetwork  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems to be working... I used epoxy that was supposed to be compatible with fuel. I did hear there was a recall, so that is the best bet, if you can get the company to fix it for free.. definitely replacing the fuel assembly is probably the best fix.. thanks for the information..

    Great video thank you, I just bought an S80 today and got it home and is leaking fuel from the top of the tank. I think this is most likely the issue. I only want to keep the car for 8 months. How long did yours hold for? If it will last me until I can afford a new car I’d be overjoyed as otherwise this car will likely be getting scraped which is a total waste of my time and money.

    • @jking4020
      @jking4020 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you just leave it at half a tank or less you will be fine. It won't leak out that much if at all. Otherwise you have to get to the top of your tank. Not sure if s80s have easy access ports underneath the back seats you will have to check

    You admit it is a safety hazard, but complain that the government makes you fix it. You can see the SRS was thrown in the part where you video the dash. Every engineer should have a 3/8" ratchet and socket set. You didn't even know what kind of car you own? Yes, Swedish cars use metric bolts - newsflash. There are some helpful tips to seat removal, etc in the video. Trying to fix this leak with epoxy is not one of them . Should have installed a new pump.

    • @jaynesnetwork
      @jaynesnetwork  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Someone did comment that there is a recall so I have been recommending people take it in for the company to fix this issue. This is a very serious issue. I had someone else from another county comment that the recall was not honered in there country, and that they were very grateful to have this information. I am all for safety. On the other hand, I opposed officials in positions of power forcing us to fix unnecessary things on our cars, in the name of what I call 'phony safety'. This is probably what I was referring to.. It is also very dangerous to give officials too much power over us, as history has taught us time and time again... It is my experience that many bureaucrats all to often misuse this 'excuse' of 'safety' to force people to do things that are not only 'not safe', but not even in their best interest. Bankrupting the honest hard working people of the world, by forcing them to fix unnecessary things, is the opposite of safety. It puts their lives in danger. Maybe some of us have lots of money to throw away on the whims of unconcerned government official, but many others may not, and is it really right for us to force unnecessary financial burdens upon those who struggle to live??? I believe that was my point. The gas leak issue is a real safety issue, and if you have this problem I recommend you make sure it is fixed properly.. A gas leak can cause a serious fire, and this is nothing to mess around with. If you can, take it to the dealer for the recall... Volvo should fix this for free... So I am told.
