Yes. Unplug the connector and ground the right pin. The fuel gauge should go to full. if it does, the problem is the pump, if it doesn't check the wiring, or it could be in the dash. Both of those issues are rare on the 01 models.

@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs HI, thanks for your reply. Yes, evidently my 2006 V70 does have a metal tank. I was not even aware there was another option and it was not mentioned in the video. Hi, thx for the video! I had mine replaced in a garage, and now, the car has difficulties starting up cold - it requires up to 20 sec on the starter - any ideas why? It looks like the fuel needs a lot of time to be delievered to the engine. Happens every time on cold. Thx for any hints
sounds like the fuel is leaking back into the tank. Did you just replace the pump, or the entire assembly? The anti drainback valve is in the assembly so it may be defective.
the fuel did return to the tank, but through faulty/dead fuel injector. It was causing difficulties with building up the fuel pressure on the common rail and delayed start of the engine. The overflow test revealed the issue. With injector replaced all works fine. Thx. @@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs
In the video you said that you never had a broken float valve. My 2005 S60 with only 108K miles, fuel gage always shows full even when empty. The needle in the cluster drops to zero when off, then maxes out when the car starts. Do you have any instructions or videos or thoughts on throubeshooting that issue?
Yes, it is the fuel level sender for the other side of the saddle tank. it needs to be removed as the fuel lines run from the new pump over to that sender.
hi, should the Volvo V70 2002 D5 diesel have the same? On my Volvo, diesel is constantly dripping on the right side somewhere on top of the tank and I don’t know what to do, where to look! thanks from Germany

Thanks for the video, very helpful! I just replaced my son's 1999 S70 pump recently and it was WAY easier in comparison to this one. My 2001 V70 XC is exhibiting the same symptom as his was (longer and longer cranking duration before she fired up) so proactively got a replacement pump. My question is on the pump side float, was it difficult to get the float out of the opening, and then back into the opening with the new pump? The pump float ball is clearly sticking out on the arm and the pump opening in the tank looks super tight. Were you just able to angle the float in and then guide the rest of the pump into the tank opening? The video did not seem to show how you managed to get the pump side float in with the rest of the pump so just wondering. For the sending unit it seems the float on that side is easier to guide back in after you get the wires reconnected compared to the pump side? Thanks again!
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs Awesome, that's what I was hoping to hear so thanks for the confirm. When I saw the removal I was just wondering if the ball float was what might have snagged and made the removal a bit of a challenge. I got the replacement pump and gaskets yesterday including a ring removal tool (the job just looks so much easier with the tool). Tank is about 1/8 full so now to just have wait for a mild New England days to take it on. Thanks again.
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs Well, it was 45F yesterday so decided to tackle the fuel pump job. Went off without a hitch....well almost! The video really helped, everything was exactly as you outlined and I was able to angle the pump to easily get the ball float into the opening. That cable tip to snake the wire and hose harness through was huge, I cannot even imagine how I'd get that damned thing thru w/o that cable tied off. Also, the tool was SO worth the $. My only frustration with the actual job was keeping the pump and sending unit aligned and the arrow pointing between the hash mark lines on the tank, even with the offset you suggested I kept overshooting the mark and needing to back off and try again. I ended up bracing the units with a large screwdriver to keep them from moving, all good! One huge bummer that was self inflicted by me, I decided to prime and drive the car before I buttoned everything up, just to make sure no leaks, and top the tank off to be sure seals was good. Confirmed no leaks, and everything buttoned up perfectly when I got back into the drive. Problem is that when I started the car w/o the seat installed and airbag connector plugged in I immediately set an "SRS_Airbag Service Urgent" error on the Message Window on the left. I have to assume this is because I started and drove it without the seat installed and airbag wire connector plugged back in? I cannot get rid of this error message and have the orange exclamation point staring me in the face every time I drive it now. Any ideas on how to clear that error message (battery disconnect did not do it)? Thanks again!
Just to close this off, I was able to clear this SRS error code with the help of my local repair shop using his tool, a no charge easy fix....lesson learned for me as I caused this error by driving w/o the rear seat air bag connector installed (so I could see both the fuel pump and sending unit assys to make sure they were not leaking). Thanks again - this video was a huge help for me to get this job done - properly!
Thank you. I had to check if the pump had a spring loaded valve defect when securing it. I was afraid I could be pushing down on the pump-side float. I’m all good now. Thanks again!
Great video! I just replaced the fuel sending unit in my 2007 s60. I just bought this car, and the second gas fill up was after the repair. I immediately smelled gas from outside the vehicle, near the rear of the vehicle. I thought at first that I didn’t do the repair correctly, but I went back over everything, ensuring a good seal. So I think I had a leak somewhere before I did the repair. Are there any known places to check? I have a smell of gas when the tank is full with no drips anywhere. Any advice? Your videos are great, I’ve used a few of them….thank you friend.
I'd say it's a o-ring issue. it may have slipped and fell partially into the tank during the tightening. Run the tank down past 1/2 and then recheck that both o-rings are seated right.
I ordered a fuel pump for my 2003 Volvo V70 XC, it's a BOSCH pump and the instructions say "A new filter screen is required" but doesn't come with the new pump. What are they talking about??? I don't want to start the job without all the parts?
It should come with it if you got the assembly- if you just bought just the pump alone, I would return it and get the full assembly. The filter is very important
Thank you for the thorough explanation and showing the whole process on video. Just subscribed! Is this on a plastic fuel tank? Also I saw another comment about the fuel gauge showing empty. That's the issue with mine too. I'm thinking if I need to buy a new sending unit, might as well buy both new and a new pump, so I can put my interior back together and not worry about it for years. Is there a way to just take the potentiometer out for the sending unit without removing the whole fuel pump assembly and fishing wire from side to side? I was considering repairing the pot and seeing if that fixes it, otherwise just buy new everything and put it to bed.
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs I'm going to have to rewatch the video because I couldn't see how you took out the sending unit that's on the fuel pump side. Does it attach to the fuel pump, or is it mounted independently?
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs just realized, I think the sending unit that is on the pump side is built into the pump. I got thrown off because it is also sold separately but seems to be included in the pump assembly for passenger side. But there's an independent sending unit for driver side (non pump side )
I watched it again and answered my own question 👍. Is that common in foreign cars ? The two in tank pumps I’ve replaced over the years , 88 RX-7 , and an 02 Mustang , the fuel level sending unit was all one unit with the pump .
No, Volvo just LOVES to be different. The tank is a saddle style tank so fuel fills both sides, but past the 1/2 way point it doesn't flow side to side so there is the second line run over there to help regulate the level.
Great tutorial! One question tho: My original pump has no connector on the top. (It also looked like your original one didn’t) But all the replacement pumps have the connector on top, just like your replacement. Do you just not plug it in?
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs Thanks for the reply and again for the great tutorial. Just finished the job and it wasn't hard at all, just frustating and tricky getting the pump in and lined up nicely.
Just replaced my fuel pump and it started up and drove fine for the first 5 minutes. Then I started getting rough idles and a p2187 code came up. Any idea why?
Okay thanks, redid it and I don’t get the code anymore. But now when I start my car it’ll run for a minute then idle out. Is this a problem with the fuel pump or something different entirely?
Hey! Great video! I have no connector on my old pump. It looks like the new pump on this video has the connector but no actual pins in it. All of the replacement ones I can find have the connector and actual pins in the connector. Am I searching for the wrong pump or are they all interchangeable?
I could not find the link for the tool- I think I got it off of ebay- did not get the high end tool as I would not need it that often. The fuel pump- shop around for the best price. Hint: Don't trust Amazon when they tell you that a part will fit your car- they LIE!!
what was the milage on this wagon ...from what ive seen they usually go out any where from 160k-190k and the 190k it starts cutting out while at a stop light or something ...my s60 has 172k and ordered the fuel pump (Bosch) to do this soon ... not hard but time consuming and like Volvos 19 steps before you get to swich out the problem part . the tool is worth every dollar i practiced at a local junk yard and very ez to turn....
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs yes from the s70s and 850s and s60 ive owned about 160-180k they start shutting off randomly at stop lights and such and with in 5-8k after that they just dont start back up one day. ive always went back in with a Bosch unit as they lasted 150k plus not sure how long the Chinese fuel units last but i figure id never need to do it again or in a few years if i went cheap... im not a math guy but was working on how many gallons it pumped at 18-gallon tank and 400 miles to the tank with 170k on the dash ... why i didnt do the cheaper fuel pump units ...
Great video! I wonder what the mechanics did wrong on my car but after replacing the pump and after fueling up my dash showed half full. They tried to fix it - adjust wires - but same issue. Eventually they put together old and new pump and it's kind of ok but the car is put of gas before I see the red bulb turning on. Actually it shows like 10% still in. Was it too cheap pump. Would getting something like Bosch fix it?
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs @PistonShack said "Most likely fuel sender unit inside the tank got bent or damaged during the installation process" Checking the arrows is easy enough to get that off the list. I hope it's the arrows! Thanks for help!
That's weird, I got access to the circle cover on the passenger side and removed it but there was nothing under it besides just the top of the gas tank. And my fuel filter isn't under the passenger side of the car either.
You have a steel tank model. They are different. The steel tank is not compatible with the composite tank pump because all the pump components are on the passenger side. The fuel filter for both is located underneath the car on the passenger side about where the rear door is. It has a Schrader valve to release the pressure and the same type of connectors for the fuel as the fuel pump. It holds a lot of fuel so have something there to catch it. I hope this helps.
@@nwsights6301 I promise it's there. It's tucked in there but it's there. Look in about 8 inches in from the side of the car, in front of the rear wheel well about where the bottom rear seat pad ends under the car. I passed it myself several times when I looked for it. I'd send you a picture but I don't know how. TH-cam doesn't give you a link.

Great video Erik . I did a job similar to this years ago in a late 80’s model RX-7 . Similar but not as hard as this . I had strings, rope, bungee cords strung out everywhere like spaghetti holding back the carpet , liner and a few other things lol But it worked . Was the fuel pump on one side , and the fuel sending unit on the other side , with a cable harness connecting them together?
Flat rate techs have to hurry to make a paycheck but if I was doing it myself, take your time and be a bit more gentle with all that or you’re going to create more problems. Definitely clean up around the pump and level sensor before you open them up and drop a bunch of debris into the tank and cause more issues…
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs Thx for the support. Just seeing all that gasoline in my back seat! One thing you could've mentioned. If someone wants to spend the money, there are 12v inline gasoline-rated pumps you could use to empty out the tank before doing the work. I luckily just bought one to drain the fuel out of a car that had been sitting for years. So maybe between that and your encouragement I'll do it. Hopefully it'll be the filter or sensor which I'm doing first. Anyway, thanks for the video and and the encouragement.

They were from Ebay. The link has expired, but they are still available from other sellers.
Greetings, what is the unit on the drivers side ? Why does it have to be removed at the same time as the fuel pump?
Yes, it is the fuel level sender for the other side of the saddle tank. it needs to be removed as the fuel lines run from the new pump over to that sender.
hi,
should the Volvo V70 2002 D5 diesel have the same? On my Volvo, diesel is constantly dripping on the right side somewhere on top of the tank and I don’t know what to do, where to look!
thanks from Germany
I wish I could tell you for sure, but they haven't sold Volvo diesels here since 1987.
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairsok, thanks 👍
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs I disassembled my car and yes, it’s the same as in the gasoline version
Thanks heaps, great description! From Australia 👍🇦🇺
Glad it was helpful!
Thank for this tutorial also about to do this on my 2001 ocean race
Good luck! It's not so bad.
I have changed a fuel pump assembly and the fuel pump relay switch it out and it still won't start and biugjt a new battery
I'd say apparently the fuel pump was not the issue! What codes does the car have active?
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs I figured it out , yeah there ipd fuel pump was having a a hard time getting gas ,threw , but all it was was a relay switch, to the starter. It work fine no issues then the gas wasn't getting threw to the gas line it kept clogged up so we got a new one and it was installed . But it was one of the relays , kept getting more hot , then it should inform got which one but it's up and running thank God
Does the car require reprogramming at all after installation of a new pump? ( I have 2001 S60)
No, not at all.
It's not hard at all, you just angle the pump to get the float in the hole, then push down the rest of the unit.
Glad I could help!
Worth noting that the smell
Is outside the vehicle, with the windows up I’m not really getting anything inside the car.
Shouldn't you disconnect the battery before doing this?
You certainly can, but it's not required. Leave the key out for sure though!
Thanks for the tip I believe this applies to v70 model also.
Yes it does, S70, S60, V70 and XC70 should all be the same.
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs thanks for the video, but my volvo v70 has no wiring from fuel pump, can I do any conversion?
This is a plastic tank, and my advice is to go ahead and swap the entire unit. trying to fix it is more trouble than its worth.
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs sounds good man, will do and thanks!
But there's an independent sending unit for driver side (non pump side )

wow, amazing tutorial! now its time for me to go ahead and get it done myself!!
You got this!
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs
Gotcha 👍
Great tutorial! One question tho: My original pump has no connector on the top. (It also looked like your original one didn’t) But all the replacement pumps have the connector on top, just like your replacement. Do you just not plug it in?
That is correct. The plastic mold is used on other models that have a connector there.
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs Thanks for the reply and again for the great tutorial. Just finished the job and it wasn't hard at all, just frustating and tricky getting the pump in and lined up nicely.
Is it same for t5 motors?
Yes!
Nicely done presentation. Can I assume that I am hearing gunshots in the background here and there.
no
Do I have to disconnect the battery
Yes. If you don't, the SRS light will be triggered.
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs Thanks for the Info.
Any tips for when that line gets caught between the tanks? Can’t get the old pump out
Keep wiggling it back and forth to you can get it to a good spot= Don't loose the string ( it will be a very bad day for you)
is this mostly the same process for an '06?
Never mind. Great video
It sure is!
I am from Korea. My car is the Volvo v70 2001 xc 2.4t model. Is it the same model as the one posted on the video? Thank you
Yes, it is the same.
Do I need a machine to reset the error codes ?
If you have not done it yet-- Unhook the battery before doing the repair- If you already have done the repair- you will need a fancy tool to reset it
@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs yep, I left the battery connected. Thanks for the info and super helpful vid
Nice job, very informative!
Glad you enjoyed it
Just replaced my fuel pump and it started up and drove fine for the first 5 minutes. Then I started getting rough idles and a p2187 code came up. Any idea why?
Kinked hose, or the pump is not pulling from the other side of the saddle tank. Pull it out and verify proper placement and alignment.
Does yours have a steel gas tank? If it's an s60 with that steel tank, it's different, but I can't remember what they changed. Sorry!
Can you please add a link for the fuel pump and removal tool if you have them?
I could not find the link for the tool- I think I got it off of ebay- did not get the high end tool as I would not need it that often. The fuel pump- shop around for the best price. Hint: Don't trust Amazon when they tell you that a part will fit your car- they LIE!!
hi from france ! great video. Similar job for my volvo next week. You are from USA, but in what state ?
what was the milage on this wagon ...from what ive seen they usually go out any where from 160k-190k and the 190k it starts cutting out while at a stop light or something ...my s60 has 172k and ordered the fuel pump (Bosch) to do this soon ... not hard but time consuming and like Volvos 19 steps before you get to swich out the problem part . the tool is worth every dollar i practiced at a local junk yard and very ez to turn....
It has about 170k on it, fuel pumps do wear with age.
They installed the pump and or sender at the wrong angle. The arrow has to point up.
@@fredericocorrea9814 Nah there's no filter there lol trust me I looked everywhere

@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs Thx for the support. Just seeing all that gasoline in my back seat! One thing you could've mentioned. If someone wants to spend the money, there are 12v inline gasoline-rated pumps you could use to empty out the tank before doing the work.
