Five days cruising on a Catalina 22, in northwest Florida

  • Cruising from Carrabelle, FL to Port St. Joe and back, June 2017. We enjoyed five days and four nights, before the forecast for more rain sent us home early. A lot of this video didn't come out nearly as well as I'd hoped, so my apologies in advance. I need to find some basic video editing software that's simple enough for me, but maybe a step up from TH-cam Editor. (**Speaking of editing, the stupid thing I mumbled at 3:31 was a JOKE. I can't edit it out now. Sorry.)

    it is good to see real people sailing rather than salesmen. I will never own a boat, too late in life for that, but I do enjoy watching here. thanks.

    “chillin’ in the ditch”, lol. That’s awesome. Great trip, great vid. Looking forward to floating our ‘86 new design again, if it ever stops snowing on Lake Winnebago, WI. Lol. We so need a bimini.

    Thank you for posting this video. Beautiful scenery, even in pouring rain it is wonderful to see you two
    enjoying life. Really enjoyed you and your brides comments. We are in landlocked Washington state it’s brand new to us. I have never owned or been aboard a Catalina 22, it’s facinating to see how well it
    works.

      WATCH OUT around San Blas shoals, if you sail by there. Even well inside of the charted shoals, we found the chart to be off by well over twelve feet!! I myself will never sail on the inside of them again. It's worth the time to just go around outside of them. ;)

    Thank you for the response. I did watch your other videos, very impressive! I would like to sail to the Dry Tortugas, I don't think I would do it on our current boat. It is built too light. I have been on other 25 ft boats that are built very solid, such as the Pacific Seacraft. As you stated skills and equipment play a large role in the success of the venture. I think we will continue to Bay sail and coastal sail in our local area with the boat we have for now. I will be 60 in a few years, maybe another boat built more sturdy would be a nice way to celebrate.

    We have a little boat like you,has similar interior it’s a NW 21. We are in the process of refit as she sank at the dock with the previous owner. She has good layout and good bones. Purchased Boat and the trailer for 200.00, tows really well,we took it 5 hr drive back home when we picked it up.Watching you sail gives me the best idea of what it will be like to sail for us. We are taking our ASA classes in the spring. Post more videos if you can....one of these days we will trailer her over to the Florida area to sail around there.

I just purchased a 83 cat 22 and looking forward to getting it ready by spring of 18. We live in SW Ga and can get to Port St Joe in about 2 hours. So I will be stepping down a few notches as I use to captain supply ships and crew boats in the Gulf of Mexico. Anyways,, I'l be cutting the wind in Choctawhatchee bay once we get the Cat cleaned and I figure out where the bow thrusters are.. :) Thanks again, oh yea, yes, I will be seeking help BEFORE doing a solo.

    I live in Hawaii and just had a mooring spot open up (after a 2.5 year wait). There is a C22 available. Can you sail with the bimini up at all points of sail? Sun here really bakes ya!

    • @geneneill530
      @geneneill530  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John! Yes, you can always sail with the Bimini up, provided it's not too windy. It does block your view of the mainsail, so there is some neck-stretching involved, but it can be done. It's a compromise, like everything else.
      If you choose to moor a swing keel C22 in salt water, you will have to do more frequent maintenance on the keel, hangers, lifting cable, etc. If it's a wing keel or a fin keel, you're golden. Good luck, and come see us at sailboat owners .com, we have a great C22 forum there!

    • @geneneill530
      @geneneill530  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh yes. You can see it in a couple places in the video. Most C22's have poptops. They are a wonderful feature, especially with the optional canvas tent. We use our poptop tent almost every night we spend aboard. The transformation is amazing.

    How well do you feel your 22 ft boat handles the coastal sailing? The reason I ask is we have a 25 ODay we normally sail in Choctawhatchee Bay . We sailed the bay for 3 years and never went through the pass, we were always warned about the pass being dangerous and I had concerns of our boats integrity . I removed the boat from the water last Oct to make the repairs to things that concerned me. I will be finished in a few months and ready to sail, the boat will be strong and in great shape. We still only have a 6 hp outboard . What are your thoughts on the boats of our size in unprotected waters. The bay can get very rough quickly , the waves are quite large for a bay . Even before the repairs the boat handled rough water and 30 knot winds without problem, there was a power issue if you were motoring into a strong wind.

    • @geneneill530
      @geneneill530  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bull ... all I can tell you is, Daydream has handled everything we have put her through with ease and grace. We trusted her enough to sail 260 miles round trip from Marco Island to the Dry Tortugas and back ... but then again, we waited five years for our skills to grow, to get the boat ready, and for the right weather window to do it in.
      We carry five different hank-on headsails on board (from a 180 drifter down to a 35' storm jib), and our main has two reef points which we use early and often. With the correct canvas flying, she behaves like a lady at all times, even running off under bare poles. Once, very early in our learning curve, we got knocked pretty flat in a thunderstorm ... the port jib winch was submerged under green water pouring into the cockpit. It was OUR FAULT it happened, not hers, but she came right on back up and shook it off. Our friend on the foredeck never even spilled his beer.
      I suppose the thing I fear most is somehow getting exposed to beam-on seas of 7' or more, which might be enough to roll her. But once again, that would be OUR fault, for letting it happen in the first place.
      I've never sailed Choctawhatchee pass, and I don't know much about O'Days (except that they are pretty!) so I am the wrong person to ask about them specifically. You surely know more than I do! They don't have a reputation as "tough" boats, but neither does Catalina. My GUESS is, the age-old saying would apply: she can probably take more than you can.
      How is your ground tackle, do you trust it 100%, and can you deploy it quickly in a pinch? Can you reef quickly and smoothly under bad circumstances?
      Are you well practiced at heaving to? Under the jib only, under the main only, and under both? In heavy air? If not, wait for some heavy air and go practice in it. We consider this to be our tactic of last resort, if (when) we foolishly get caught out in something we never should have been in to begin with.

  • @vtwin4life
    @vtwin4life 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am looking at Cat22s and Com-Pac 23. What type do you have? Wing keel, or swing keel? What's your motor setup? Looks like it was a great trip. I bareboat in the BVI a 40-50ft every year, and sail a simple 15ft centerboard sloop at home. I'm thinking I want something this size for weekending instead of just day sailing.

    • @geneneill530
      @geneneill530  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Timothy, our C22 is a swing keel model. Great for the thin waters of Florida's gulf coast, and great for trailer sailing. ComPac 23 is a great shallow draft boat also, but much heavier, not as great a trailer sailor. Of course, if you plan to slip your boat in salt water, I would avoid a swing keel. I'm lazy and wouldn't want the extra maintenance. ;)

    • @vtwin4life
      @vtwin4life 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You read my mind. I am in fact on salt water and that was my primary concern with the swing keel. You have a great boat setup. Very nice.

    • @geneneill530
      @geneneill530  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      George, the Bimini is described as 46" High, 3 Bow, 6' L x 79" - 84" Wide. I chose to mount it on the Genoa tracks, to avoid drilling holes in the deck. Because of this, it is a little narrower than ideal, but it works okay and the height is fine.

    You guys are doing an amazing job with this boat!👍👍 I think I am sold on this as my first! You can drive this right up on any beach just like the McGregor 26 right?

    • @geneneill530
      @geneneill530  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, actually I wouldn't recommend that. The entire weight of the vessel would rest on the keel, which would not be good. The stress you'd be putting on the four 5/16" keel mounting bolts is not something they were designed for. You could probably get away with it now and then, but I wouldn't do it to a boat I cared about. Plus you'd scratch up the keel and instantly make it start rusting.
      Just toss out the hook in 2-3 feet of water and wade ashore. :)

      @@michaeldennis7952 some do, some have flying keels, some have fin keels. This one is a retracting keel. He’s saying while you could, it’s not worth the abuse on the keel and mounts to do it versus stopping on 2ft of water instead.

      @@darell6485 Thank you!! We still sail, but lately not near as much or for as long as we would like. Our kids grew up and moved away, so we lost our house/dog/chickens sitters. LOL But the situation is temporary. We like to think our cruising days have barely begun. :)

    Hey Gene, I enjoy watching your videos , they are well done but not over produced, feels like I'm on board with you guys. A Cat 22 will probably be our next boat with one in college and another in 2 years I am sticking with my O'Day Daysailer for now which we really enjoy. But a couple more years I want to do more cruising than daysailing , I have showed your videos to the Mrs. and I think I almost have her sold. Keep having fun. Tim Ps. I forgot to ask how is the Tohatsu holding up ?

    • @geneneill530
      @geneneill530  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words, Tim! It's extremely flattering to hear our silly videos might actually help you get your spouse on board a C22! The Tohatsu Sailpro has been perfect in almost every way. Six HP is more than enough, and the gas mileage is great under most circumstances. She starts on the first pull almost every time, even after sitting for many weeks. I use only non-ethanol gas, but I don't bother running the carb dry and I don't use any fuel additives like Sea Foam or Sta-bil. My only complaint is that the the steering "friction lock" is not very effective. Whatever you do, never put any grease into the neck if you don't absolutely have to - I made that mistake, and the problem got a lot worse. Good luck my friend, stop by Sailboat Owners .com sometime, we have a great group there.

      Hey Gene, I have been on a Cat 22 on a trailer and like the size of the cockpit and the cabin is big enough for us to coexist in on a rainy day or 2. I like that the mast is manageable because we want to go up the Hudson River into the Champlain Canal and on into lake Champlain, and there are a few low bridges to get under. We might get a slip for the summer up there because I can be there in 2 hours by train , it would almost be like having a summer place . Tim

    Where did you get that shirt ? My C-22 is named day dreamer!

      @geneneill530  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No kidding!! She came with the name Daydream, and we didn't like it at first, but it grew on us. Now we love it. Funny thing, I spoke to the PO a year after we bought her, he had bought a Jeanneau and named it "Daydreamer".
      I got the shirt on eBay, seller name is "artcar68".

    Pick up a used MacBook that has iMovie on it, very good and simple editing software with color correction that will really bring out the footage. Also consider getting a dead cat for your mic or just dubbing water sounds over your video to get rid of the constant wind noise.All my videos I do with iMovie, like this one. th-cam.com/video/n5pFr9VkulA/w-d-xo.html
