    It is so nice to see small boat sailing adventures. We have a Chrysler 22 Sandpiper we got in 2003. We'd hoped to do some coastal cruising from Apalachicola to Crystal River but age and health issues have squashed that dream. I will enjoy living that dream vicariously through your videos. Thank you!

      Mark long. I'm looking to start this adventure too before I'm too sick. Would you consider selling the Chrysler? Thanks.

    I had a Catalina 22 for 30 years. I would recommend a topping lift so you can easily drop the main and not worry about the boom I ran all my lines to the cockpit including using a jiffy reefing system which made reefing a breeze. Bimini'a are worth their weight in gold IMHO. Keeps the boat cooler and you too. Fairwinds, Catalina 22 Fleet 10 , Chespaeake Bay

    Enjoyed your videos, I too recently bought a sailboat, a Skimmer 25, with almost no sailing experience, so I completely understand! We sail on a lake, so not quite as steep of a learning curve! Would love to come sail the ICW in the Pensacola/Navarre area when this corona thing is done. Especially would love to explore islands, but man, I am terrified of leaving the boat at anchor with no one aboard! I guess boats do it all the time. Wish I had started this adventure years ago!

    What does a slip run for a boat like size? I'm in Pittsburgh now but will be transferring to the Sarasota area sometime in 2021. I'm trying to get an idea of what is feasible. Also, do you have the marina take it out for you? Thanks again for the help. This is the most informative video on the subject I've found!

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With a sailboat, you'll keep it in the water. It's not like a power boat where you can have it put on a rack and the marina gets it out when you want to use it each time. I pay $200/month but for non-residents it's twice that amount. Some marinas can be more or less, it all depends on the area. It's like $19/foot but then I get 50% off as a resident. Our marina has a long waiting list.

    What size outboard are you running?

  • @joshuabryan4663
    @joshuabryan4663 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm curious what the bottom of the boat looks like. Is there a lot of growth on the bottom? Have you ever hauled it out and cleaned the bottom? It just seems to me like your motor is pushing really hard, but the boat speed is low.

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was mostly low throttle this trip since we were motor sailing sometimes, so that when the slight wind died we would keep moving or be able to have some steering around the heavy boat traffic. When motor sailing I tried to keep it at idle or 1/4 throttle. I was trying to use more sail and less motor, keeping around 2.5 knots otherwise we'd just be motoring and burn too much fuel for a 15 mile trip. I've scraped her clean a few months ago, and now there's a little growth again. It's a 2 cylinder two stroke motor, if that might be part of what you're hearing. Then again, it's no speed demon... We hit around 5 knots on full throttle motor.

    Hey! I am very very interested about your anti-halyard system for your jib! (is there one for mainsail too?) How it works?

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The jib downhaul? How to works is in the video... it's a separate line that goes up with the jib halyard so you can pull it back down and force more of it onto the deck. It means I don't have to go stand at the mast to lower the jib or have the jib flying overboard. It's does not fold it neatly, but it quickly takes it down. I didn't install that for the mainsail because when I release the main halyard the sail starts to drop and I can get some sail-ties on it enough to get underway. I would recommend this setup.

    You're in Dunedin? That's where I live. Thought it looked familiar, and then you radioed the causeway bridge and I cracked up. I'm currently looking for a Cat22. If you crank up the keel can't the boat be beached at the islands?

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, we are! The Catalina 22 was really a better boat for sailing around the area but was too small for out in the Gulf on most days. It takes us about an hour to get to Clearwater Pass in our fin keel 28' boat with nearly a 5' draft. A Cat22 can be taken right up to the small islands and also sailed around behind the islands at high tide. At the time we had the 22, we also had a jet boat, so we didn't need to visit islands too much since we did that on the power boat so much. We would hit the keel sometimes but the swing keel was nice. Knowing the area and where it's deep/shallow is important, so if you aren't sure, go out at a rising tide so you can always float off!

      Davis, I have a 1976 Catalina 22 with a poptop. I'm 6' tall and there is plenty of sitting headroom with the poptop closed. Watch the bolts that secure the poptop, mine extended a few inches more than needed and is a hazard to the skull...

    I know you guys have moved Way On, but could you think back......... Did you tow the dinghy or did you have it deflated and stored below, then inflated it once you were at the island? Do you use an electric inflater (pump) or manual?

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If the dingy was out and being used, we left it inflate and towed it, but we left it up front and inflated it when we needed it. I got a high volume inflator off amazon with a 12v plug and that would blow it up enough so that i didn't really have to use the manual pump. We have paddle board, bikes and a new dinghy and nothing is done with a manual pump as there are too many cheap inflators out there that work so well. Each time we used that dingy, we'd bring it home, inflate it, wash it, dry it... take it back to the boat.. I hope that helps!

    How far can you go on a tank of gas when motoring? Do you store gas cans on the boat?

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use about a gallon per hour. I changed from a 3 gallon tank to a 6 gallon, mostly just so I don't have to refill as often. A 4-stroke or even just a more modern motor might have less fuel consumption. So we have one six gallon tank strapped in under one of the seats in the cockpit... the lazarette.

    I would have just motored up as close to the Island as I could with keel up and put a fore and aft anchor out instead of rowing. You only draw 2 ft.

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what we did... aside from two anchors, which we only do on our powerboat. Our waters are generally 5-8 feet deep around all the intracoastal waters. If you watch the video, the entire night the keel was hitting the bottom at low tide. We have about a 3 foot tidal change. So we might anchor in five feet but at midnight it's 2 feet and we're hitting. We'd have to anchor in six feet of water to have 3 feet at low tide, leaving only one foot below... which is what we did, but tides aren't exact due to wind and more water left than we anticipated so we hit bottom.
